Causal Disentangled Recommendation Against User Preference Shifts, Wenjie Wang, Xinyu Lin, Liuhui Wang, Fuli Feng, Yunshan Ma, Tat‑Seng Chua Jan 2024

Causal Disentangled Recommendation Against User Preference Shifts, Wenjie Wang, Xinyu Lin, Liuhui Wang, Fuli Feng, Yunshan Ma, Tat‑Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recommender systems easily face the issue of user preference shifts. User representations will become outof-date and lead to inappropriate recommendations if user preference has shifted over time. To solve theissue, existing work focuses on learning robust representations or predicting the shifting pattern. Therelacks a comprehensive view to discover the underlying reasons for user preference shifts. To understand thepreference shift, we abstract a causal graph to describe the generation procedure of user interaction sequences.Assuming user preference is stable within a short period, we abstract the interaction sequence as a set ofchronological environments. From the causal graph, we find that the changes …

Glance To Count: Learning To Rank With Anchors For Weakly-Supervised Crowd Counting, Zheng Xiong, Liangyu Chai, Wenxi Liu, Yongtuo Liu, Sucheng Ren, Shengfeng He Jan 2024

Glance To Count: Learning To Rank With Anchors For Weakly-Supervised Crowd Counting, Zheng Xiong, Liangyu Chai, Wenxi Liu, Yongtuo Liu, Sucheng Ren, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Crowd image is arguably one of the most laborious data to annotate. In this paper, we devote to reduce the massive demand of densely labeled crowd data, and propose a novel weakly-supervised setting, in which we leverage the binary ranking of two images with highcontrast crowd counts as training guidance. To enable training under this new setting, we convert the crowd count regression problem to a ranking potential prediction problem. In particular, we tailor a Siamese Ranking Network that predicts the potential scores of two images indicating the ordering of the counts. Hence, the ultimate goal is to assign appropriate …

Cooperative Trucks And Drones For Rural Last-Mile Delivery With Steep Roads, Jiuhong Xiao, Ying Li, Zhiguang Cao, Jianhua Xiao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The cooperative delivery of trucks and drones promises considerable advantages in delivery efficiency and environmental friendliness over pure fossil fuel fleets. As the prosperity of rural B2C e-commerce grows, this study intends to explore the prospect of this cooperation mode for rural last-mile delivery by developing a green vehicle routing problem with drones that considers the presence of steep roads (GVRPD-SR). Realistic energy consumption calculations for trucks and drones that both consider the impacts of general factors and steep roads are incorporated into the GVRPD-SR model, and the objective is to minimize the total energy consumption. To solve the proposed …

Affinity Uncertainty-Based Hard Negative Mining In Graph Contrastive Learning, Chaoxi Niu, Guansong Pang, Ling Chen Jan 2024

Affinity Uncertainty-Based Hard Negative Mining In Graph Contrastive Learning, Chaoxi Niu, Guansong Pang, Ling Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hard negative mining has shown effective in enhancing self-supervised contrastive learning (CL) on diverse data types, including graph CL (GCL). The existing hardness-aware CL methods typically treat negative instances that are most similar to the anchor instance as hard negatives, which helps improve the CL performance, especially on image data. However, this approach often fails to identify the hard negatives but leads to many false negatives on graph data. This is mainly due to that the learned graph representations are not sufficiently discriminative due to oversmooth representations and/or non-independent and identically distributed (non-i.i.d.) issues in graph data. To tackle this …

Remote Multi-Person Heart Rate Monitoring With Smart Speakers: Overcoming Separation Constraint, Ngoc Doan Thu Tran, Dong Ma, Rajesh Krishna Balan Jan 2024

Remote Multi-Person Heart Rate Monitoring With Smart Speakers: Overcoming Separation Constraint, Ngoc Doan Thu Tran, Dong Ma, Rajesh Krishna Balan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Heart rate is a key vital sign that can be used to understand an individual’s health condition. Recently, remote sensing techniques, especially acoustic-based sensing, have received increasing attention for their ability to non-invasively detect heart rate via commercial mobile devices such as smartphones and smart speakers. However, due to signal interference, existing methods have primarily focused on monitoring a single user and required a large separation between them when monitoring multiple people. These limitations hinder many common use cases such as couples sharing the same bed or two or more people located in close proximity. In this paper, we present …

Provably Secure Decisions Based On Potentially Malicious Information, Dongxia Wang, Tim Muller, Jun Sun Jan 2024

Provably Secure Decisions Based On Potentially Malicious Information, Dongxia Wang, Tim Muller, Jun Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

There are various security-critical decisions routinely made, on the basis of information provided by peers: routing messages, user reports, sensor data, navigational information, blockchain updates, etc. Jury theorems were proposed in sociology to make decisions based on information from peers, which assume peers may be mistaken with some probability. We focus on attackers in a system, which manifest as peers that strategically report fake information to manipulate decision making. We define the property of robustness: a lower bound probability of deciding correctly, regardless of what information attackers provide. When peers are independently selected, we propose an optimal, robust decision mechanism …

Active Code Learning: Benchmarking Sample-Efficient Training Of Code Models, Qiang Hu, Yuejun Guo, Xiaofei Xie, Maxime Cordy, Lei Ma, Mike Papadakis, Yves Le Traon Jan 2024

Active Code Learning: Benchmarking Sample-Efficient Training Of Code Models, Qiang Hu, Yuejun Guo, Xiaofei Xie, Maxime Cordy, Lei Ma, Mike Papadakis, Yves Le Traon

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The costly human effort required to prepare the training data of machine learning (ML) models hinders their practical development and usage in software engineering (ML4Code), especially for those with limited budgets. Therefore, efficiently training models of code with less human effort has become an emergent problem. Active learning is such a technique to address this issue that allows developers to train a model with reduced data while producing models with desired performance, which has been well studied in computer vision and natural language processing domains. Unfortunately, there is no such work that explores the effectiveness of active learning for code …

Dynamic Meta-Path Guided Temporal Heterogeneous Graph Neural Networks, Yugang Ji, Chuan Shi, Yuan Fang Jan 2024

Dynamic Meta-Path Guided Temporal Heterogeneous Graph Neural Networks, Yugang Ji, Chuan Shi, Yuan Fang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have become the de facto standard for representation learning on topological graphs, which usually derive effective node representations via message passing from neighborhoods. Although GNNs have achieved great success, previous models are mostly confined to static and homogeneous graphs. However, there are multiple dynamic interactions between different-typed nodes in real-world scenarios like academic networks and e-commerce platforms, forming temporal heterogeneous graphs (THGs). Limited work has been done for representation learning on THGs and the challenges are in two aspects. First, there are abundant dynamic semantics between nodes while traditional techniques like meta-paths can only capture static …

Enabling Ai And Robotic Coaches For Physical Rehabilitation Therapy: Iterative Design And Evaluation With Therapists And Post-Stroke Survivors, Min Hun Lee, Daniel Siewiorek, Asim Smailagic, Alexandre Bernardino, Sergi Bermúdez I Badia

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic coaches promise the improved engagement of patients on rehabilitation exercises through social interaction. While previous work explored the potential of automatically monitoring exercises for AI and robotic coaches, the deployment of these systems remains a challenge. Previous work described the lack of involving stakeholders to design such functionalities as one of the major causes. In this paper, we present our efforts on eliciting the detailed design specifications on how AI and robotic coaches could interact with and guide patient’s exercises in an effective and acceptable way with four therapists and five post-stroke survivors. Through iterative …

Wakening Past Concepts Without Past Data: Class-Incremental Learning From Online Placebos, Yaoyao Liu, Yingying Li, Bernt Schiele, Qianru Sun Jan 2024

Wakening Past Concepts Without Past Data: Class-Incremental Learning From Online Placebos, Yaoyao Liu, Yingying Li, Bernt Schiele, Qianru Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Not forgetting old class knowledge is a key challenge for class-incremental learning (CIL) when the model continuously adapts to new classes. A common technique to address this is knowledge distillation (KD), which penalizes prediction inconsistencies between old and new models. Such prediction is made with almost new class data, as old class data is extremely scarce due to the strict memory limitation in CIL. In this paper, we take a deep dive into KD losses and find that "using new class data for KD"not only hinders the model adaption (for learning new classes) but also results in low efficiency for …

Kape: Knn-Based Performance Testing For Deep Code Search, Yuejun Guo, Qiang Hu, Xiaofei Xie, Cordy Maxime, Mike Papadakis, Yves Le Traon Dec 2023

Kape: Knn-Based Performance Testing For Deep Code Search, Yuejun Guo, Qiang Hu, Xiaofei Xie, Cordy Maxime, Mike Papadakis, Yves Le Traon

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Code search is a common yet important activity of software developers. An efficient code search model can largely facilitate the development process and improve the programming quality. Given the superb performance of learning the contextual representations, deep learning models, especially pre-trained language models, have been widely explored for the code search task. However, studies mainly focus on proposing new architectures for ever-better performance on designed test sets but ignore the performance on unseen test data where only natural language queries are available. The same problem in other domains, e.g., CV and NLP, is usually solved by test input selection that …

Estimating Propensity For Causality-Based Recommendation Without Exposure Data, Zhongzhou Liu, Yuan Fang, Min Wu Dec 2023

Estimating Propensity For Causality-Based Recommendation Without Exposure Data, Zhongzhou Liu, Yuan Fang, Min Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Causality-based recommendation systems focus on the causal effects of user-item interactions resulting from item exposure (i.e., which items are recommended or exposed to the user), as opposed to conventional correlation-based recommendation. They are gaining popularity due to their multi-sided benefits to users, sellers and platforms alike. However, existing causality-based recommendation methods require additional input in the form of exposure data and/or propensity scores (i.e., the probability of exposure) for training. Such data, crucial for modeling causality in recommendation, are often not available in real-world situations due to technical or privacy constraints. In this paper, we bridge the gap by proposing …

Monocular Depth Estimation For Glass Walls With Context: A New Dataset And Method, Yuan Liang, Bailin Deng, Wenxi Liu, Jing Qin, Shengfeng He Dec 2023

Monocular Depth Estimation For Glass Walls With Context: A New Dataset And Method, Yuan Liang, Bailin Deng, Wenxi Liu, Jing Qin, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditional monocular depth estimation assumes that all objects are reliably visible in the RGB color domain. However, this is not always the case as more and more buildings are decorated with transparent glass walls. This problem has not been explored due to the difficulties in annotating the depth levels of glass walls, as commercial depth sensors cannot provide correct feedbacks on transparent objects. Furthermore, estimating depths from transparent glass walls requires the aids of surrounding context, which has not been considered in prior works. To cope with this problem, we introduce the first Glass Walls Depth Dataset (GW-Depth dataset). We …

Robust Test Selection For Deep Neural Networks, Weifeng Sun, Meng Yan, Zhongxin Liu, David Lo Dec 2023

Robust Test Selection For Deep Neural Networks, Weifeng Sun, Meng Yan, Zhongxin Liu, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have been widely used in various domains, such as computer vision and software engineering. Although many DNNs have been deployed to assist various tasks in the real world, similar to traditional software, they also suffer from defects that may lead to severe outcomes. DNN testing is one of the most widely used methods to ensure the quality of DNNs. Such method needs rich test inputs with oracle information (expected output) to reveal the incorrect behaviors of a DNN model. However, manually labeling all the collected test inputs is a labor-intensive task, which delays the quality assurance …

Benchmarking Foundation Models With Language-Model-As-An-Examiner, Yushi Bai, Jiahao Ying, Yixin Cao, Xin Lv, Yuze He, Xiaozhi Wang, Jifan Yu, Kaisheng Zeng, Yijia Xiao, Haozhe Lyu, Jiayin Zhang, Juanzi Li, Lei Hou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Numerous benchmarks have been established to assess the performance of foundation models on open-ended question answering, which serves as a comprehensive test of a model’s ability to understand and generate language in a manner similar to humans. Most of these works focus on proposing new datasets, however, we see two main issues within previous benchmarking pipelines, namely testing leakage and evaluation automation. In this paper, we propose a novel benchmarking framework, Language-Model-as-an-Examiner, where the LM serves as a knowledgeable examiner that formulates questions based on its knowledge and evaluates responses in a reference-free manner. Our framework allows for effortless extensibility …

Efficient Meta Neural Heuristic For Multi-Objective Combinatorial Optimization, Jinbiao Chen, Zizhen Zhang, Te Ye, Zhiguang Cao, Siyuan Chen, Jiahai Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recently, neural heuristics based on deep reinforcement learning have exhibited promise in solving multi-objective combinatorial optimization problems (MOCOPs). However, they are still struggling to achieve high learning efficiency and solution quality. To tackle this issue, we propose an efficient meta neural heuristic (EMNH), in which a meta model is first trained and then fine-tuned with a few steps to solve corresponding single-objective subproblems. Specifically, for the training process, a (partial) architecture-shared multi-task model is leveraged to achieve parallel learning for the meta model, so as to speed up the training; meanwhile, a scaled symmetric sampling method with respect to the …

A Closer Look At The Security Risks In The Rust Ecosystem, Xiaoye Zheng, Zhiyuan Wan, Yun Zhang, Rui Chang, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Rust is an emerging programming language designed for the development of systems software. To facilitate the reuse of Rust code, crates.io, as a central package registry of the Rust ecosystem, hosts thousands of third-party Rust packages. The openness of crates.io enables the growth of the Rust ecosystem but comes with security risks by severe security advisories. Although Rust guarantees a software program to be safe via programming language features and strict compile-time checking, the unsafe keyword in Rust allows developers to bypass compiler safety checks for certain regions of code. Prior studies empirically investigate the memory safety and concurrency bugs …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A previous study on the use of the Empath library in the prediction of Service Level Agreements (SLA) reveals the quality levels required for meaningful interaction between government customer service officers and citizens. On the other hand, past implementation of the Citizen Question-Answer system (CQAS), a type of Question-Answer model, suggests that such models if put in place can empower government customer service officers to reply faster and better with recommended answers. This study builds upon the research outcomes from both arenas of studies and introduces an innovative system design that allows the officers to incorporate the outputs from Empath …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The proliferation of online video content underscores the critical need for effective sentiment analysis, particularly in safeguarding children from potentially harmful material. This research addresses this concern by presenting a multimodal analysis method for assessing video sentiment, categorizing it as either positive (child-friendly) or negative (potentially harmful). This method leverages three key components: text analysis, facial expression analysis, and audio analysis, including music mood analysis, resulting in a comprehensive sentiment assessment. Our evaluation results validate the effectiveness of this approach, making significant contributions to the field of video sentiment analysis and bolstering child safety measures. This research serves as a …

Designing Large-Scale Intelligent Collaborative Platform For Freight Forwarders, Pang Jin Tan, Shih-Fen Cheng, Richard Chen Dec 2023

Designing Large-Scale Intelligent Collaborative Platform For Freight Forwarders, Pang Jin Tan, Shih-Fen Cheng, Richard Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose to design a large-scale intelligent collaborative platform for freight forwarders. This platform is based on a mathematical programming formulation and an efficient solution approach. Forwarders are middlemen who procure container capacities from carriers and sell them to shippers to serve their transport requests. However, due to demand uncertainty, they often either over-procure or under-procure capacities. We address this with our proposed platform where forwarders can collaborate and share capacities, allowing one's transport requests to be potentially shipped on another forwarder's container. The result is lower total costs for all participating forwarders. The collaboration can be …

Mermaid: A Dataset And Framework For Multimodal Meme Semantic Understanding, Shaun Toh, Adriel Kuek, Wen Haw Chong, Roy Ka Wei Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Memes are widely used to convey cultural and societal issues and have a significant impact on public opinion. However, little work has been done on understanding and explaining the semantics expressed in multimodal memes. To fill this research gap, we introduce MERMAID, a dataset consisting of 3,633 memes annotated with their entities and relations, and propose a novel MERF pipeline that extracts entities and their relationships in memes. Our framework combines state-of-the-art techniques from natural language processing and computer vision to extract text and image features and infer relationships between entities in memes. We evaluate the proposed framework on a …

Ethical Considerations For Artificial Intelligence In Educational Assessments, Lim Ming Soon Tristan, Gottipati Swapna, Michelle L. F. Cheong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In the vital context of education, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to assessments necessitates a nuanced examination of the boundaries between ethically permissible and impermissible practices. In this chapter, the authors applied a systematic literature mapping methodology to scour extant research, so as to holistically structure the landscape into explicit topical research clusters. Through topic modelling and network analyses, research mapped key ethical principles to different assessment phases in a triadic ontological framework. The chapter looks to provide researchers and practitioners the insights into the ethical challenges that exist across an end-to-end assessment pipeline.

A Comprehensive Evaluation Of Large Language Models On Legal Judgment Prediction, Ruihao Shui, Yixin Cao, Xiang Wang, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated great potential for domain-specific applications, such as the law domain. However, recent disputes over GPT-4’s law evaluation raise questions concerning their performance in real-world legal tasks. To systematically investigate their competency in the law, we design practical baseline solutions based on LLMs and test on the task of legal judgment prediction. In our solutions, LLMs can work alone to answer open questions or coordinate with an information retrieval (IR) system to learn from similar cases or solve simplified multi-choice questions. We show that similar cases and multi-choice options, namely label candidates, included in prompts …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recently, Meta-Black-Box Optimization with Reinforcement Learning (MetaBBO-RL) has showcased the power of leveraging RL at the meta-level to mitigate manual fine-tuning of lower-level black-box optimizers. However, this field is hindered by the lack of a unified benchmark. To fill this gap, we introduce MetaBox, the first benchmark platform expressly tailored for developing and evaluating MetaBBO-RL methods. MetaBox offers a flexible algorithmic template that allows users to effortlessly implement their unique designs within the platform. Moreover, it provides a broad spectrum of over 300 problem instances, collected from synthetic to realistic scenarios, and an extensive library of 19 baseline methods, including …

Wsdms: Debunk Fake News Via Weakly Supervised Detection Of Misinforming Sentences With Contextualized Social Wisdom, Ruichao Yang, Wei Gao, Jing Ma, Hongzhan Lin, Zhiwei Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In recent years, we witness the explosion of false and unconfirmed information (i.e., rumors) that went viral on social media and shocked the public. Rumors can trigger versatile, mostly controversial stance expressions among social media users. Rumor verification and stance detection are different yet relevant tasks. Fake news debunking primarily focuses on determining the truthfulness of news articles, which oversimplifies the issue as fake news often combines elements of both truth and falsehood. Thus, it becomes crucial to identify specific instances of misinformation within the articles. In this research, we investigate a novel task in the field of fake news …

Interpreting Codebert For Semantic Code Clone Detection, Shamsa Abid, Xuemeng Cai, Lingxiao Jiang Dec 2023

Interpreting Codebert For Semantic Code Clone Detection, Shamsa Abid, Xuemeng Cai, Lingxiao Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Accurate detection of semantic code clones has many applications in software engineering but is challenging because of lexical, syntactic, or structural dissimilarities in code. CodeBERT, a popular deep neural network based pre-trained code model, can detect code clones with a high accuracy. However, its performance on unseen data is reported to be lower. A challenge is to interpret CodeBERT's clone detection behavior and isolate the causes of mispredictions. In this paper, we evaluate CodeBERT and interpret its clone detection behavior on the SemanticCloneBench dataset focusing on Java and Python clone pairs. We introduce the use of a black-box model interpretation …

Customer Cybersecurity And Supplier Cost Management Strategy, Xu Yang, Peng Liang, Nan Hu, Fujing Xue Dec 2023

Customer Cybersecurity And Supplier Cost Management Strategy, Xu Yang, Peng Liang, Nan Hu, Fujing Xue

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we explore the spillover effect of customer firms’ data breaches on their upstream supplier firms’ cost management strategies, proxied by cost stickiness. Our primary analyses suggest that data breaches suffered by customer firms are associated with a decrease in cost stickiness among supplier firms. Furthermore, the reductions in supplier cost stickiness are stronger if suppliers are managed by CEOs from national cultural groups with high uncertainty avoidance, low long-term orientations, and/or low individualism. In sum, the findings contribute to both Information Systems (IS) and Operations Management (OM) disciplines in terms of data breach, cost management strategy, and …

Self-Supervised Pseudo Multi-Class Pre-Training For Unsupervised Anomaly Detection And Segmentation In Medical Images, Yu Tian, Fengbei Liu, Guansong Pang, Yuanhong Chen, Yuyuan Liu, Johan W. Verjans, Rajvinder Singh, Gustavo Carneiro Dec 2023

Self-Supervised Pseudo Multi-Class Pre-Training For Unsupervised Anomaly Detection And Segmentation In Medical Images, Yu Tian, Fengbei Liu, Guansong Pang, Yuanhong Chen, Yuyuan Liu, Johan W. Verjans, Rajvinder Singh, Gustavo Carneiro

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Unsupervised anomaly detection (UAD) methods are trained with normal (or healthy) images only, but during testing, they are able to classify normal and abnormal (or disease) images. UAD is an important medical image analysis (MIA) method to be applied in disease screening problems because the training sets available for those problems usually contain only normal images. However, the exclusive reliance on normal images may result in the learning of ineffective low-dimensional image representations that are not sensitive enough to detect and segment unseen abnormal lesions of varying size, appearance, and shape. Pre-training UAD methods with self-supervised learning, based on computer …
