Bridging Expert Knowledge With Deep Learning Techniques For Just-In-Time Defect Prediction, Xin Zhou, Donggyun Han, David Lo Feb 2025

Bridging Expert Knowledge With Deep Learning Techniques For Just-In-Time Defect Prediction, Xin Zhou, Donggyun Han, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Just-In-Time (JIT) defect prediction aims to automatically predict whether a commit is defective or not, and has been widely studied in recent years. In general, most studies can be classified into two categories: 1) simple models using traditional machine learning classifiers with hand-crafted features, and 2) complex models using deep learning techniques to automatically extract features from commit contents. Hand-crafted features used by simple models are based on expert knowledge but may not fully represent the semantic meaning of the commits. On the other hand, deep learning-based features used by complex models represent the semantic meaning of commits but may …

Proactive Conversational Ai: A Comprehensive Survey Of Advancements And Opportunities, Yang Deng, Lizi Liao, Wenqiang Lei, Grace Hui Yang, Wai Lam, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Dialogue systems are designed to offer human users social support or functional services through natural language interactions. Traditional conversation research has put significant emphasis on a system's response-ability, including its capacity to understand dialogue context and generate appropriate responses. However, the key element of proactive behavior-a crucial aspect of intelligent conversations-is often overlooked in these studies. Proactivity empowers conversational agents to lead conversations towards achieving pre-defined targets or fulfilling specific goals on the system side. Proactive dialogue systems are equipped with advanced techniques to handle complex tasks, requiring strategic and motivational interactions, thus representing a significant step towards artificial general …

Wf-Ppg: A Wrist-Finger Dual-Channel Dataset For Studying The Impact Of Contact Pressure On Ppg Morphology, Matthew Yiwen Ho, Hung Manh Pham, Aaqib Saeed, Dong Ma Feb 2025

Wf-Ppg: A Wrist-Finger Dual-Channel Dataset For Studying The Impact Of Contact Pressure On Ppg Morphology, Matthew Yiwen Ho, Hung Manh Pham, Aaqib Saeed, Dong Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a simple optical technique widely used in wearable devices for continuous cardiac health monitoring. However, the quality of PPG signals, particularly their morphology, is influenced by the contact pressure between the skin and the sensor. This variability in signal quality complicates complex tasks that rely on high-quality signals, such as blood pressure and heart rate variability estimation, making them less reliable or even impossible. To address this issue, we present a novel dataset (termed WF-PPG) comprising PPG signals from the wrist measured under varying contact pressures, along with high-quality PPG signals from the fingertip captured simultaneously. Data …

Loco: Low-Bit Communication Adaptor For Large-Scale Model Training, Xingyu Xie, Zhijie Lin, Kim-Chuan Toh, Pan Zhou Feb 2025

Loco: Low-Bit Communication Adaptor For Large-Scale Model Training, Xingyu Xie, Zhijie Lin, Kim-Chuan Toh, Pan Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To efficiently train large-scale models, low-bit gradient communication compresses full-precision gradients on local GPU nodes into low-precision ones for higher gradient synchronization efficiency among GPU nodes. However, it often degrades training quality due to compression information loss. To address this, we propose the Low-bit Communication Adaptor (LoCo), which compensates gradients on local GPU nodes before compression, ensuring efficient synchronization without compromising training quality. Specifically, LoCo designs a moving average of historical compensation errors to stably estimate concurrent compression error and then adopts it to compensate for the concurrent gradient compression, yielding a less lossless compression. This mechanism allows it to …

Qultsf: Long-Term Time Series Forecasting With Quantum Machine Learning, Hari Hara Suthan Chittoor, Paul Robert Griffin, Ariel Neufeld, Jayne Thompson, Mile Gu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Long-term time series forecasting (LTSF) involves predicting a large number of future values of a time series based on the past values. This is an essential task in a wide range of domains including weather forecasting, stock market analysis and disease outbreak prediction. Over the decades LTSF algorithms have transitioned from statistical models to deep learning models like transformer models. Despite the complex architecture of transformer based LTSF models ‘Are Transformers Effective for Time Series Forecasting? (Zeng et al., 2023)’ showed that simple linear models can outperform the state-of-the-art transformer based LTSF models. Recently, quantum machine learning (QML) is evolving …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Zero-knowledge Succinct Non-interactive Argument of Knowledge (zkSNARK) is a powerful cryptographic primitive, in which a prover convinces a verifier that a given statement is true without leaking any additional information. However, existing zkSNARKs suffer from high computation overhead in the proof generation. This limits the applications of zkSNARKs, such as private payments, private smart contracts, and anonymous credentials. Private delegation has become a prominent way to accelerate proof generation. In this work, we propose Siniel, an efficient private delegation framework for zkSNARKs constructed from polynomial interactive oracle proof (PIOP) and polynomial commitment scheme (PCS). Our protocol allows a computationally limited …

Impact Tracing: Identifying The Culprit Of Misinformation In Encrypted Messaging Systems, Zhongming Wang, Tao Xiang, Xiaoguo Li, Biwen Chen, Guomin Yang, Chuan Ma, Robert H. Deng Feb 2025

Impact Tracing: Identifying The Culprit Of Misinformation In Encrypted Messaging Systems, Zhongming Wang, Tao Xiang, Xiaoguo Li, Biwen Chen, Guomin Yang, Chuan Ma, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Encrypted messaging systems obstruct content moderation, although they provide end-to-end security. As a result, misinformation proliferates in these systems, thereby exacerbating online hate and harassment. The paradigm of “Reporting-then-Tracing” shows great potential in mitigating the spread of misinformation. For instance, message traceback (CCS’19) traces all the dissemination paths of a message, while source tracing (CCS’21) traces its originator. However, message traceback lacks privacy preservation for non-influential users (e.g., users who only receive the message once), while source tracing maintains privacy but only provides limited traceability. In this paper, we initiate the study of impact tracing. Intuitively, impact tracing traces influential …

Manufacturers offer adjustable control parameters for flight control systems to accommodate diverse environments and missions. To ensure flight safety, they also develop established boundaries, i.e., range specifications for parameter values. However, even when the configuration parameters fall within the prescribed manufacturer range, they could still lead to instability or even severe incidents like crashes, which are referred to as Range Specification Bugs. Prior research has suggested shrinking the range of parameter values to protect drones from the adverse effects of such bugs. However, narrowing the range of parameters may only reduce the probability of errors and could potentially limit the …

Why Are Fairness Concerns So Important? Lessons From A Last-Mile Transportation System, Yiwei Chen, Hai Wang Feb 2025

Why Are Fairness Concerns So Important? Lessons From A Last-Mile Transportation System, Yiwei Chen, Hai Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The Last-Mile Problem refers to the provision of travel service for passengers from the nearest public transportation node to the final destination. The Last-Mile Transportation System (LMTS), which has recently emerged, provides on-demand last-mile transportation service for passengers. We consider an LMTS that consists of two types of passengers, regular-type passengers and special-type passengers (e.g., seniors, disabled people). The valuation of the last-mile service for special-type passengers is statistically higher than the one for regular-type passengers. Passengers incur disutility from waiting for the last-mile service. In this paper, we explore two fairness constraints on special-type passengers: (1) the fare for …

Empowering Crisis Information Extraction Through Actionability Event Schemata And Domain-Adaptive Pre-Training, Yuhao Zhang, Siaw Ling Lo, Phyo Yi Win Myint

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

One of the persistent challenges in crisis detection is inferring actionable information to support emergency response. Existing methods focus on situational awareness but often lack actionable insights. This study proposes a holistic approach to implementing an actionability extraction system on social media, including requirement gathering, selection of machine learning tasks, data preparation, and integration with existing resources, providing guidance for governments, civil services, emergency workers, and researchers on supplementing existing channels with actionable information from social media. Our solution leverages an actionability schema and domain-adaptive pre-training, improving upon the state-of-the-art model by 5.5% and 10.1% in micro and macro F1 …

Defending Federated Recommender Systems Against Untargeted Attacks: A Contribution-Aware Robust Aggregation Scheme, Ruicheng Liang, Yuanchun Jiang, Feida Zhu, Ling Cheng, Huiwen Liu Jan 2025

Defending Federated Recommender Systems Against Untargeted Attacks: A Contribution-Aware Robust Aggregation Scheme, Ruicheng Liang, Yuanchun Jiang, Feida Zhu, Ling Cheng, Huiwen Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Federated recommender systems (FedRSs) effectively tackle the tradeoff between recommendation accuracy and privacy preservation. However, recent studies have revealed severe vulnerabilities in FedRSs, particularly against untargeted attacks seeking to undermine their overall performance. Defense methods employed in traditional recommender systems are not applicable to FedRSs, and existing robust aggregation schemes for other federated learning-based applications have proven ineffective in FedRSs. Building on the observation that malicious clients contribute negatively to the training process, we design a novel contribution-aware robust aggregation scheme to defend FedRSs against untargeted attacks, named contribution-aware Bayesian knowledge distillation aggregation (ConDA), comprising two key components for the …

Your Cursor Reveals: On Analyzing Workers’ Browsing Behavior And Annotation Quality In Crowdsourcing Tasks, Pei-Chi Lo, Ee-Peng Lim Jan 2025

Your Cursor Reveals: On Analyzing Workers’ Browsing Behavior And Annotation Quality In Crowdsourcing Tasks, Pei-Chi Lo, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this work, we investigate the connection between browsing behavior and task quality of crowdsourcing workers performing annotation tasks that require information judgements. Such information judgements are often required to derive ground truth answers to information retrieval queries. We explore the use of workers’ browsing behavior to directly determine their annotation result quality. We hypothesize user attention to be the main factor contributing to a worker’s annotation quality. To predict annotation quality at the task level, we model two aspects of task-specific user attention, also known as general and semantic user attentions . Both aspects of user attention can be …

Automated Program Refinement: Guide And Verify Code Large Language Model With Refinement Calculus, Yufan Cai, Zhe Hou, David Sanan, Xiaokun Luan, Yun Lin, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recently, the rise of code-centric large language models (LLMs) appears to have reshaped the software engineering world with low-barrier tools like Copilot that can generate code easily. However, there is no correctness guarantee for the code generated by LLMs, which suffer from the hallucination problem, and their output is fraught with risks. Besides, the end-to-end process from specification to code through LLMs is a non-transparent and uncontrolled black box. This opacity makes it difficult for users to understand and trust the generated code. Addressing these challenges is both necessary and critical. In contrast, program refinement transforms high-level specification statements into …

Learning To Rank Aspects And Opinions For Comparative Explanations, Trung Hoang Le, Hady Wirawan Lauw Jan 2025

Learning To Rank Aspects And Opinions For Comparative Explanations, Trung Hoang Le, Hady Wirawan Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Comparative recommendation explanations help to make sense of recommendations by comparing a recommended item along some aspects of interest with one or many items being considered. This work extends the notion of comparative explanations, by going beyond merely better/worse statements, to further incorporate aspect-level opinions for more informative comparisons. To enhance the quality of both the personalized recommendation and the explanation, we incorporate optimization objectives that preserve relative rankings of aspects and opinions, in addition to the classical rankings of overall preferences for items. We integrate the multiple ranking objectives and multi-tensor factorization together. Experiments on datasets of different domains …

The Gradient Puppeteer: Adversarial Domination In Gradient Leakage Attacks Through Model Poisoning, Kunlan Xiang, Haomiao Yang, Meng Hao, Shaofeng Li, Haoxin Wang, Zikang Ding, Wenbo Jiang, Tianwei Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In Federated Learning (FL), clients share gradients with a central server while keeping their data local. However, malicious servers could deliberately manipulate the models to reconstruct clients' data from shared gradients, posing significant privacy risks. Although such Active Gradient Leakage Attacks (AGLAs) have been widely studied, they suffer from two severe limitations: 1) coverage: no existing AGLAs can reconstruct all samples in a batch from the shared gradients; 2) stealthiness: no existing AGLAs can evade principled checks of clients. In this paper, we address these limitations with two core contributions. First, we introduce a new theoretical analysis approach, which uniformly …

Interactive Video Search With Multi-Modal Llm Video Captioning, Yu-Tong Cheng, Jiaxin Wu, Zhixin Ma, Jiangshan He, Xiao-Yong Wei, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cross-modal representation learning is essential for interactive text-to-video search tasks. However, the representation learning is limited by the size and quality of video-caption pairs. To improve the search accuracy, we propose to enlarge the size of available video-caption pairs by leveraging multi-model LLM on video captioning. Specifically, we use LLM to generate video captions for a large video collection (i.e., WebVid dataset) and use the generated video-caption pairs to pre-train a text-to-video search model. Additionally, we use LLM to generate fine-grained captions for test video collections to enable text-to-caption retrieval. Furthermore, we build a semantic overview of the retrieved rank …

An End-To-End Bi-Objective Approach To Deep Graph Partitioning, Pengcheng Wei, Yuan Fang, Zhihao Wen, Zheng Xiao, Binbin Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graphs are ubiquitous in real-world applications, such as computation graphs and social networks. Partitioning large graphs into smaller, balanced partitions is often essential, with the biobjective graph partitioning problem aiming to minimize both the“cut” across partitions and the imbalance in partition sizes. However, existing heuristic methods face scalability challenges or overlook partition balance, leading to suboptimal results. Recent deep learning approaches, while promising, typically focus only on node-level features and lack a truly end-to-end framework, resulting in limited performance. In this paper, we introduce a novel method based on graph neural networks (GNNs) that leverages multilevel graph features and addresses …

Fedart: A Neural Model Integrating Federated Learning And Adaptive Resonance Theory, Shubham Pateria, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan Jan 2025

Fedart: A Neural Model Integrating Federated Learning And Adaptive Resonance Theory, Shubham Pateria, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a promising paradigm for collaborative model training across distributed clients while preserving data privacy. However, prevailing FL approaches aggregate the clients’ local models into a global model through multi-round iterative parameter averaging. This leads to the undesirable bias of the aggregated model towards certain clients in the presence of heterogeneous data distributions among the clients. Moreover, such approaches are restricted to supervised classification tasks and do not support unsupervised clustering. To address these limitations, we propose a novel one-shot FL approach called Federated Adaptive Resonance Theory (FedART) which leverages self-organizing Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) …

Lara : A Light And Anti-Overfitting Retraining Approach For Unsupervised Time Series Anomaly Detection, Feiyi Chen, Zhen Qin, Mengchu Zhou, Yingying Zhang, Shuiguang Deng, Lunting Fan, Guansong Pang, Qingsong Wen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Most of current anomaly detection models assume that the normal pattern remains the same all the time. However, the normal patterns of web services can change dramatically and frequently over time. The model trained on old-distribution data becomes outdated and ineffective after such changes. Retraining the whole model whenever the pattern is changed is computationally expensive. Further, at the beginning of normal pattern changes, there is not enough observation data from the new distribution. Retraining a large neural network model with limited data is vulnerable to overfitting. Thus, we propose a Light Anti-overfitting Retraining Approach (LARA) based on deep variational …

Impact Of Achievement-Oriented Gamification In Erp Systems: Examining Subjective And Objective User Outcomes, E. Adeborna, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, L. Motiwalla

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This research explores the effect of gamification using achievement-oriented affordances in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems on subjective (behavioral intention) and objective (performance) outcomes. Drawing on the cognitive-affectiveconative (CAC) framework, a research model was developed to explain behavioral intention and tested in a pilot experiment with 63 participants. These participants completed a post-study questionnaire for assessing the impact of gamification on users’ behavioral intention that is mediated by CAC constructs: focused immersion, enjoyment, and selfrewarding experience. Preliminary results show that gamification enhances enjoyment and self-rewarding experience, which in turn positively influence and fully mediate behavioral intention. Objective performance outcomes were …

An Agent-Based Computational Finance Simulation Model To Study Market Efficiency, Wei Feng, Keng Siau, Wee-Yeap Lau, Lim-Thye Goh, Haonan Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The advancement of computational modeling, data systems, and digital infrastructure has enabled the rise of agent-based computational finance (ACF). This study models interactions among heterogeneous investors. By embedding behavioral logics such as environmental, social, and governance (ESG) preferences and volatility thresholds, the model captures microstructural dynamics under different trading rules. Using ACF, the authors compare transaction plus 0 day (T+0) to transaction plus 1 day (T+1). Results show that T+0 improves price discovery, deepens liquidity, and reduces transaction costs. From a computational perspective, this research contributes to ACF by showing how policy logic and investor heterogeneity can be encoded and …

Don’T Complete It! Preventing Unhelpful Code Completion For Productive And Sustainable Neural Code Completion Systems, Zhensu Sun, Xiaoning Du, Fu Song, Shangwen Wang, Mingze Ni, Li Li, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Currently, large pre-trained language models are widely applied in neural code completion systems. Though large code models significantly outperform their smaller counterparts, around 70% of displayed code completions from Github Copilot are not accepted by developers. Being reviewed but not accepted, their help to developer productivity is considerably limited and may conversely aggravate the workload of developers, as the code completions are automatically and actively generated in state-of-the-art code completion systems as developers type out once the service is enabled. Even worse, considering the high cost of the large code models, it is a huge waste of computing resources and …

Privacy-Preserving User Recruitment With Sensing Quality Evaluation In Mobile Crowdsensing, Jieying An, Yanbing Ren, Xinghua Li, Man Zhang, Bin Luo, Yinbin Miao, Ximeng Liu, Deng, Robert H. Jan 2025

Privacy-Preserving User Recruitment With Sensing Quality Evaluation In Mobile Crowdsensing, Jieying An, Yanbing Ren, Xinghua Li, Man Zhang, Bin Luo, Yinbin Miao, Ximeng Liu, Deng, Robert H.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recruiting users in mobile crowdsensing (MCS) can make the platform obtain high-quality data to provide better services. Although the privacy leakage during the process of user recruitment has received a lot of research attention, none of the existing work considers the evaluation of the sensing quality of privacy-preserving data submitted by users, which makes the platform incapable of recruiting users suitably to obtain high-quality sensing data, thereby reducing the reliability of MCS services. To solve this problem, we first propose a sensing quality evaluation method based on the deviation and variance of sensing data. According to it, the platform can …

The Gender Wage Gap In An Online Labor Market: The Cost Of Interruptions, Abi Adams, Kotaro Hara, Kristy Milland, Chris Callison-Burch Jan 2025

The Gender Wage Gap In An Online Labor Market: The Cost Of Interruptions, Abi Adams, Kotaro Hara, Kristy Milland, Chris Callison-Burch

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper analyses gender differences in working patterns and wages on Amazon Mechanical Turk, a popular online labour platform. Using information on 2 million tasks, we find no gender differences in task selection nor experience. Nonetheless, women earn 20% less per hour on average. Gender differences in working patterns are a significant driver of this wage gap. Women are more likely to interrupt their working time on the platform with consequences for their task completion speed. A follow-up survey shows that the gender differences in working patterns and hourly wages are concentrated amongst workers with children.

Deep Reinforcement Learning With Explicit Context Representation, Francisco Munguia-Galeano, Ah-Hwee Tan, Ze Ji Jan 2025

Deep Reinforcement Learning With Explicit Context Representation, Francisco Munguia-Galeano, Ah-Hwee Tan, Ze Ji

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Though reinforcement learning (RL) has shown an outstanding capability for solving complex computational problems, most RL algorithms lack an explicit method that would allow learning from contextual information. On the other hand, humans often use context to identify patterns and relations among elements in the environment, along with how to avoid making wrong actions. However, what may seem like an obviously wrong decision from a human perspective could take hundreds of steps for an RL agent to learn to avoid. This article proposes a framework for discrete environments called Iota explicit context representation (IECR). The framework involves representing each state …

Last Digit Tendency: Lucky Number And Psychological Rounding In Mobile Transactions, Hai Wang, Tian Lu, Yingjie Zhang, Yue Wu, Yiheng Sun, Jingran Dong, Wen Huang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The distribution of digits in numbers obtained from different sources reveals interesting patterns. The well-known Benford’s law states that the first digits in many real-life numerical data sets have an asymmetric, logarithmic distribution in which small digits are more common; this asymmetry diminishes for subsequent digits, and the last digit tends to be uniformly distributed. In this paper, we investigate the digit distribution of numbers in a large mobile transaction data set with 835 million mobile transactions and payments made by approximately 460,000 users in more than 300 cities. Although the first digits of the numbers in these mobile transactions …

Flowing Together Or Alone: Impact Of Collaboration In The Metaverse, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Brenda Eschenbrenner, Langtao Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The metaverse is the next-generation Internet (Web3) that facilitates social connections and collaborations in a virtual world environment. Given the potential of the metaverse to provide more satisfying and effective means of remote collaborations, exploring the possibility of leveraging the metaverse for these endeavors is warranted. Therefore, an important question to address is whether greater engagement occurs when tasks are completed collaboratively versus individually in the metaverse. We address this question by drawing on flow and transportation theories to hypothesize the effect of carrying out a creative task in the metaverse collaboratively versus alone on one's cognitive absorption, a contextually …

Marrying Top-K With Skyline Queries: Operators With Relaxed Preference Input And Controllable Output Size, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Keming Li, Bo Tang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The two most common paradigms to identify records of preference in a multi-objective setting rely either on dominance (e.g., the skyline operator) or on a utility function defined over the records' attributes (typically, using a top-k query). Despite their proliferation, each of them has its own palpable drawbacks. Motivated by these drawbacks, we identify three hard requirements for practical decision support, namely, personalization, controllable output size, and flexibility in preference specification. With these requirements as a guide, we combine elements from both paradigms and propose two new operators, ORD and ORU. We perform a qualitative study to demonstrate how they …
