Posit: Simultaneously Tagging Natural And Programming Languages, Profir-Petru Pârțachi, Santanu Dash, Christoph Treude, Earl T. Barr

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software developers use a mix of source code and natural language text to communicate with each other: Stack Overflow and Developer mailing lists abound with this mixed text. Tagging this mixed text is essential for making progress on two seminal software engineering problems — traceability, and reuse via precise extraction of code snippets from mixed text. In this paper, we borrow code-switching techniques from Natural Language Processing and adapt them to apply to mixed text to solve two problems: language identification and token tagging. Our technique, POSIT, simultaneously provides abstract syntax tree tags for source code tokens, part-of-speech tags for …

Use Of Eye-Tracking To Identify Psychological Indicators Of Sleepiness, Debasis Roy, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Matthew Thimgan May 2020

Use Of Eye-Tracking To Identify Psychological Indicators Of Sleepiness, Debasis Roy, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Matthew Thimgan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sleepiness or sleep deprivation creates a serious hazard or obstacle to task execution and performance. Sleep deprivation can be life-threating (e.g., when driving or executing attention-critical tasks). We are interested to examine if eye-tracking technology can be used to assess and detect sleepiness in an online environment. In this research proposal, we will focus on examining the relationships between sleepiness and parameters involving pupil size, blinks, and saccades.

Non-Autoregressive Dialog State Tracking, Hung Le, Richard Socher, Steven C. H. Hoi May 2020

Non-Autoregressive Dialog State Tracking, Hung Le, Richard Socher, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent efforts in Dialogue State Tracking (DST) for task-oriented dialogues have progressed toward open-vocabulary or generation-based approaches where the models can generate slot value candidates from the dialogue history itself. These approaches have shown good performance gain, especially in complicated dialogue domains with dynamic slot values. However, they fall short in two aspects: (1) they do not allow models to explicitly learn signals across domains and slots to detect potential dependencies among (domain, slot) pairs; and (2) existing models follow auto-regressive approaches which incur high time cost when the dialogue evolves over multiple domains and multiple turns. In this paper, …

Automated Identification Of Libraries From Vulnerability Data, Chen Yang, Andrew Santosa, Asankhaya Sharma, David Lo May 2020

Automated Identification Of Libraries From Vulnerability Data, Chen Yang, Andrew Santosa, Asankhaya Sharma, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software Composition Analysis (SCA) has gained traction in recent years with a number of commercial offerings from various companies. SCA involves vulnerability curation process where a group of security researchers, using various data sources, populate a database of open-source library vulnerabilities, which is used by a scanner to inform the end users of vulnerable libraries used by their applications. One of the data sources used is the National Vulnerability Database (NVD). The key challenge faced by the security researchers here is in figuring out which libraries are related to each of the reported vulnerability in NVD. In this article, we …

Platform Pricing With Strategic Buyers: The Impact Of Future Production Cost, Mei Lin, Xiajun Amy Pan, Quan Zheng May 2020

Platform Pricing With Strategic Buyers: The Impact Of Future Production Cost, Mei Lin, Xiajun Amy Pan, Quan Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Two-sided platforms are often coupled with exclusive hardware products that connect two sides of users, the consumers of the hardware product (i.e., buyers) and the application developers (i.e., sellers). The hardware product in the platform business model introduces three important issues that are not yet well understood in the literature of platform pricing: potentially downward-trending production cost, product quality improvements, and consumers' strategic behaviors. Using analytical modeling, our study explicitly factors in these issues in analyzing a monopoly platform owner's two-sided pricing problem. The platform sequentially introduces and prices quality-improving hardware products, for which the costliness of quality may decrease. …

Relationships Between Willingness To Share Information For Benefits And Trust, Gaurav Bansal, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah May 2020

Relationships Between Willingness To Share Information For Benefits And Trust, Gaurav Bansal, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This research examines the role of willingness to share one’s information for three benefits as tradeoffs – monetary gains, personalization, and national security – and their effects on trust in online businesses. Data were gathered from MTurk and the results indicate that willingness to share information for monetary gains and personalization is marginally associated with trust in online businesses, but willingness to share information for national security has no association with trust in online businesses. The paper also discusses implications, limitations, and future research directions.

Starhopper: A Touch Interface For Remote Object-Centric Drone Navigation, Jiannan Li, Ravin Balakrishnan, Tovi Grossman May 2020

Starhopper: A Touch Interface For Remote Object-Centric Drone Navigation, Jiannan Li, Ravin Balakrishnan, Tovi Grossman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Camera drones, a rapidly emerging technology, offer people the ability to remotely inspect an environment with a high degree of mobility and agility. However, manual remote piloting of a drone is prone to errors. In contrast, autopilot systems can require a significant degree of environmental knowledge and are not necessarily designed to support flexible visual inspections. Inspired by camera manipulation techniques in interactive graphics, we designed StarHopper, a novel touch screen interface for efficient object-centric camera drone navigation, in which a user directly specifies the navigation of a drone camera relative to a specified object of interest. The system relies …

Memlock: Memory Usage Guided Fuzzing, Cheng Wen, Haijun Wang, Yuekang Li, Shengchao Qin, Yang Liu, Zhiwu Xu, Hongxu Chen, Xiaofei Xie, Geguang Pu, Ting Liu May 2020

Memlock: Memory Usage Guided Fuzzing, Cheng Wen, Haijun Wang, Yuekang Li, Shengchao Qin, Yang Liu, Zhiwu Xu, Hongxu Chen, Xiaofei Xie, Geguang Pu, Ting Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Uncontrolled memory consumption is a kind of critical software security weaknesses. It can also become a security-critical vulnerability when attackers can take control of the input to consume a large amount of memory and launch a Denial-of-Service attack. However, detecting such vulnerability is challenging, as the state-of-the-art fuzzing techniques focus on the code coverage but not memory consumption. To this end, we propose a memory usage guided fuzzing technique, named MemLock, to generate the excessive memory consumption inputs and trigger uncontrolled memory consumption bugs. The fuzzing process is guided with memory consumption information so that our approach is general and …

Towards Characterizing Adversarial Defects Of Deep Learning Software From The Lens Of Uncertainty, Xiyue Zhang, Xiaofei Xie, Lei Ma, Xiaoning Du, Qiang Hu, Yang Liu, Jianjun Zhao, Meng Sun May 2020

Towards Characterizing Adversarial Defects Of Deep Learning Software From The Lens Of Uncertainty, Xiyue Zhang, Xiaofei Xie, Lei Ma, Xiaoning Du, Qiang Hu, Yang Liu, Jianjun Zhao, Meng Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Over the past decade, deep learning (DL) has been successfully applied to many industrial domain-specific tasks. However, the current state-of-the-art DL software still suffers from quality issues, which raises great concern especially in the context of safety- and security-critical scenarios. Adversarial examples (AEs) represent a typical and important type of defects needed to be urgently addressed, on which a DL software makes incorrect decisions. Such defects occur through either intentional attack or physical-world noise perceived by input sensors, potentially hindering further industry deployment. The intrinsic uncertainty nature of deep learning decisions can be a fundamental reason for its incorrect behavior. …

Typestate-Guided Fuzzer For Discovering Use-After-Free Vulnerabilities, Haijun Wang, Xiaofei Xie, Yi Li, Cheng Wen, Yuekang Li, Yang Liu, Shengchao Qin, Hongxu Chen, Yulei Sui May 2020

Typestate-Guided Fuzzer For Discovering Use-After-Free Vulnerabilities, Haijun Wang, Xiaofei Xie, Yi Li, Cheng Wen, Yuekang Li, Yang Liu, Shengchao Qin, Hongxu Chen, Yulei Sui

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing coverage-based fuzzers usually use the individual control flow graph (CFG) edge coverage to guide the fuzzing process, which has shown great potential in finding vulnerabilities. However, CFG edge coverage is not effective in discovering vulnerabilities such as use-after-free (UaF). This is because, to trigger UaF vulnerabilities, one needs not only to cover individual edges, but also to traverse some (long) sequence of edges in a particular order, which is challenging for existing fuzzers. To this end, we propose to model UaF vulnerabilities as typestate properties, and develop a typestate-guided fuzzer, named UAFL, for discovering vulnerabilities violating typestate properties. Given …

Chaff From The Wheat: Characterizing And Determining Valid Bug Reports, Yuanrui Fan, Xin Xia, David Lo, Ahmed E. Hassan May 2020

Chaff From The Wheat: Characterizing And Determining Valid Bug Reports, Yuanrui Fan, Xin Xia, David Lo, Ahmed E. Hassan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Developers use bug reports to triage and fix bugs. When triaging a bug report, developers must decide whether the bug report is valid (i.e., a real bug). A large amount of bug reports are submitted every day, with many of them end up being invalid reports. Manually determining valid bug report is a difficult and tedious task. Thus, an approach that can automatically analyze the validity of a bug report and determine whether a report is valid can help developers prioritize their triaging tasks and avoid wasting time and effort on invalid bug reports. In this study, motivated by the …

Competitive Ratios For Online Multi-Capacity Ridesharing, Meghna Lowalekar, Pradeep Varakantham, Patrick Jaillet May 2020

Competitive Ratios For Online Multi-Capacity Ridesharing, Meghna Lowalekar, Pradeep Varakantham, Patrick Jaillet

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In multi-capacity ridesharing, multiple requests (e.g., customers, food items, parcels) with different origin and destination pairs travel in one resource. In recent years, online multi-capacity ridesharing services (i.e., where assignments are made online) like Uber-pool, foodpanda, and on-demand shuttles have become hugely popular in transportation, food delivery, logistics and other domains. This is because multi-capacity ridesharing services benefit all parties involved – the customers (due to lower costs), the drivers (due to higher revenues) and the matching platforms (due to higher revenues per vehicle/resource). Most importantly these services can also help reduce carbon emissions (due to fewer vehicles on roads). …

Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning With Integrated Discovery Of Salient Subgoals, Shubham Pateria, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan May 2020

Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning With Integrated Discovery Of Salient Subgoals, Shubham Pateria, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning (HRL) is a promising approach to solve more complex tasks which may be challenging for the traditional reinforcement learning. HRL achieves this by decomposing a task into shorter-horizon subgoals which are simpler to achieve. Autonomous discovery of such subgoals is an important part of HRL. Recently, end-to-end HRL methods have been used to reduce the overhead from offline subgoal discovery by seeking the useful subgoals while simultaneously learning optimal policies in a hierarchy. However, these methods may still suffer from slow learning when the search space used by a high level policy to find the subgoals is …

Pmkt: Privacy-Preserving Multi-Party Knowledge Transfer For Financial Market Forecasting, Zhuoran Ma, Jianfeng Ma, Yinbin Miao, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Ximeng Liu, Xiangyu Wang, Tengfei Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While decision-making task is critical in knowledge transfer, particularly from multi-source domains, existing knowledge transfer approaches are not generally designed to be privacy preserving. This has potential legal and financial implications, particularly in sensitive applications such as financial market forecasting. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a Privacy-preserving Multi-party Knowledge Transfer system (PMKT), based on decision trees, for financial market forecasting. Specifically, in PMKT, we leverage a cryptographic-based model sharing technique to securely outsource knowledge reflected in decision trees of multiple parties, and design a secure computation mechanism to facilitate privacy-preserving knowledge transfer. An encrypted user-submitted request from the target …

Robust Graph Learning From Noisy Data, Zhao Kang, Haiqi Pan, Steven C. H. Hoi, Zenglin Xu May 2020

Robust Graph Learning From Noisy Data, Zhao Kang, Haiqi Pan, Steven C. H. Hoi, Zenglin Xu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Learning graphs from data automatically have shown encouraging performance on clustering and semisupervised learning tasks. However, real data are often corrupted, which may cause the learned graph to be inexact or unreliable. In this paper, we propose a novel robust graph learning scheme to learn reliable graphs from the real-world noisy data by adaptively removing noise and errors in the raw data. We show that our proposed model can also be viewed as a robust version of manifold regularized robust principle component analysis (RPCA), where the quality of the graph plays a critical role. The proposed model is able to …

Who And When To Screen: Multi-Round Active Screening For Network Recurrent Infectious Diseases Under Uncertainty, Han-Ching Ou, Arunesh Sinha, Sze-Chuan Suen, Andrew Perrault, Alpan Raval, Milind Tambe May 2020

Who And When To Screen: Multi-Round Active Screening For Network Recurrent Infectious Diseases Under Uncertainty, Han-Ching Ou, Arunesh Sinha, Sze-Chuan Suen, Andrew Perrault, Alpan Raval, Milind Tambe

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Controlling recurrent infectious diseases is a vital yet complicated problem in global health. During the long period of time from patients becoming infected to finally seeking treatment, their close contacts are exposed and vulnerable to the disease they carry. Active screening (or case finding) methods seek to actively discover undiagnosed cases by screening contacts of known infected people to reduce the spread of the disease. Existing practice of active screening methods often screen all contacts of an infected person, requiring a large budget. In cooperation with a research institute in India, we develop a model of the active screening problem …

A Matheuristic Algorithm For Solving The Vehicle Routing Problem With Cross-Docking, Aldy Gunawan, Audrey Tedja Widjaja, Pieter Vansteenwegen, Vincent F. Yu May 2020

A Matheuristic Algorithm For Solving The Vehicle Routing Problem With Cross-Docking, Aldy Gunawan, Audrey Tedja Widjaja, Pieter Vansteenwegen, Vincent F. Yu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper studies the integration of the vehicle routing problem with cross-docking, namely VRPCD. The aim is to find a set of routes to deliver single products from a set of suppliers to a set of customers through a cross-dock facility, such that the operational and transportation costs are minimized, without violating the vehicle capacity and time horizon constraints. A two-phase matheuristic approach that uses the routes of the local optima of an adaptive large neighborhood search (ALNS) as columns in a set-partitioning formulation of the VRPCD is designed. This matheuristic outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms in solving a subset of …

Learning Expensive Coordination: An Event-Based Deep Rl Approach, Runsheng Yu, Xinrun Wang, Rundong Wang, Youzhi Zhang, Bo An, Zhen Yu Shi, Hanjiang Lai May 2020

Learning Expensive Coordination: An Event-Based Deep Rl Approach, Runsheng Yu, Xinrun Wang, Rundong Wang, Youzhi Zhang, Bo An, Zhen Yu Shi, Hanjiang Lai

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing works in deep Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) mainly focus on coordinating cooperative agents to complete certain tasks jointly. However, in many cases of the real world, agents are self-interested such as employees in a company and clubs in a league. Therefore, the leader, i.e., the manager of the company or the league, needs to provide bonuses to followers for efficient coordination, which we call expensive coordination. The main difficulties of expensive coordination are that i) the leader has to consider the long-term effect and predict the followers’ behaviors when assigning bonuses, and ii) the complex interactions between followers make …

Poster Abstract: Data Communication Using Switchable Privacy Glass, Changshuo Hu, Dong Ma, Mahbub Hassan, Wen Hu Apr 2020

Poster Abstract: Data Communication Using Switchable Privacy Glass, Changshuo Hu, Dong Ma, Mahbub Hassan, Wen Hu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Switchable privacy glass can electronically change its state between opaque and transparent. In this work, we propose to exploit the electronic configurability of switchable glass to modulate natural light, which can be demodulated by a nearby receiver with light sensing capability to realise data communication over natural light. A key advantage is that no energy is used to generate light, as it simply modulates the existing light in the nature. We demonstrate that the proposed data communication using switchable glass modulation can achieve 33.33 bits per second communication with a bit rate below 1% under a wide range of ambient …

Designing A Smart Internet Of Things Solution For Point Of Use Water Filtration Management System In Residential, Commercial And Public Settings, Tristan Lim, Hwee-Pink Tan, Chin Sin Ong, Rahul Belani, Siddhant S. K. Agrawal Apr 2020

Designing A Smart Internet Of Things Solution For Point Of Use Water Filtration Management System In Residential, Commercial And Public Settings, Tristan Lim, Hwee-Pink Tan, Chin Sin Ong, Rahul Belani, Siddhant S. K. Agrawal

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The use of water filtration Point-of-Use (POU) systems are extensive, ranging from water dispensers in public estates, to household POU water systems. Manufacturers typically recommend filtration cartridges to be changed (i) after their useful life, or (ii) when the water flow volume have exceeded certain capacity, whichever is earlier. However, filtration mechanisms are typically not changed with sufficient regularity. Overused filters can result in negative health effects, over and above the deterioration and loss of filtration benefits of the POU water system. Presently most existing water purification systems do not have smart connected Internet of Things (IoT) means of informing …

Incorporating A Reverse Logistics Scheme In A Vehicle Routing Problem With Cross-Docking Network: A Modelling Approach, Audrey Tedja Widjaja, Aldy Gunawan, Panca Jodiawan, Vincent F. Yu Apr 2020

Incorporating A Reverse Logistics Scheme In A Vehicle Routing Problem With Cross-Docking Network: A Modelling Approach, Audrey Tedja Widjaja, Aldy Gunawan, Panca Jodiawan, Vincent F. Yu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Reverse logistics has been implemented by various companies because of its ability to gain more profit and maintain the competitiveness of the company. However, extensive studies on the vehicle routing problem with cross-docking (VRPCD) only considered the forward flow instead of the reverse flow. Motivated by the ability of a VRPCD network to minimize the distribution cost in the forward flow, this research incorporates the reverse logistics scheme in a VRPCD network, namely the VRP with reverse cross-docking (VRP-RCD). We propose a VRP-RCD mathematical model for a four-level supply chain network that involves suppliers, cross-dock, customers, and outlets. The main …

A New Construction For Linkable Secret Handshake, Yangguang Tian, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng, Nan Li, Guomin Yang, Zheng Yang Apr 2020

A New Construction For Linkable Secret Handshake, Yangguang Tian, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng, Nan Li, Guomin Yang, Zheng Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we introduce a new construction for linkable secret handshake that allows authenticated users to perform handshake anonymously within allowable times. We define formal security models for the new construction, and prove that it can achieve session key security, anonymity, untraceability and linkable affiliation-hiding. In particular, the proposed construction ensures that (i) anyone can trace the real identities of dishonest users who perform handshakes for more than k times; and (ii) an optimal communication cost between authorized users is achieved by exploiting the proof of knowledges.

Privacy-Preserving Outsourced Support Vector Machine Design For Secure Drug Discovery, Ximeng Liu, Robert H. Deng, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Yang Yang Apr 2020

Privacy-Preserving Outsourced Support Vector Machine Design For Secure Drug Discovery, Ximeng Liu, Robert H. Deng, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Yang Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a framework for privacy-preserving outsourced drug discovery in the cloud, which we refer to as POD. Specifically, POD is designed to allow the cloud to securely use multiple drug formula providers' drug formulas to train Support Vector Machine (SVM) provided by the analytical model provider. In our approach, we design secure computation protocols to allow the cloud server to perform commonly used integer and fraction computations. To securely train the SVM, we design a secure SVM parameter selection protocol to select two SVM parameters and construct a secure sequential minimal optimization protocol to privately refresh …

Review-Guided Helpful Answer Identification In E-Commerce, Wenxuan Zhang, Wai Lam, Yang Deng, Jing Ma Apr 2020

Review-Guided Helpful Answer Identification In E-Commerce, Wenxuan Zhang, Wai Lam, Yang Deng, Jing Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Product-specific community question answering platforms can greatly help address the concerns of potential customers. However, the user-provided answers on such platforms often vary a lot in their qualities. Helpfulness votes from the community can indicate the overall quality of the answer, but they are often missing. Accurately predicting the helpfulness of an answer to a given question and thus identifying helpful answers is becoming a demanding need. Since the helpfulness of an answer depends on multiple perspectives instead of only topical relevance investigated in typical QA tasks, common answer selection algorithms are insufficient for tackling this task. In this paper, …

On The Robustness Of Cascade Diffusion Under Node Attacks, Alvis Logins, Yuchen Li, Panagiotis Karras Apr 2020

On The Robustness Of Cascade Diffusion Under Node Attacks, Alvis Logins, Yuchen Li, Panagiotis Karras

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

How can we assess a network's ability to maintain its functionality under attacks? Network robustness has been studied extensively in the case of deterministic networks. However, applications such as online information diffusion and the behavior of networked public raise a question of robustness in probabilistic networks. We propose three novel robustness measures for networks hosting a diffusion under the Independent Cascade (IC) model, susceptible to node attacks. The outcome of such a process depends on the selection of its initiators, or seeds, by the seeder, as well as on two factors outside the seeder's discretion: the attack strategy and the …

A Generalized Formal Semantic Framework For Smart Contracts, Jiao Jiao, Shang-Wei Lin, Jun Sun Apr 2020

A Generalized Formal Semantic Framework For Smart Contracts, Jiao Jiao, Shang-Wei Lin, Jun Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Smart contracts can be regarded as one of the most popular blockchain-based applications. The decentralized nature of the blockchain introduces vulnerabilities absent in other programs. Furthermore, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to patch a smart contract after it has been deployed. Therefore, smart contracts must be formally verified before they are deployed on the blockchain to avoid attacks exploiting these vulnerabilities. There is a recent surge of interest in analyzing and verifying smart contracts. While most of the existing works either focus on EVM bytecode or translate Solidity contracts into programs in intermediate languages for analysis and verification, …

A Cue Adaptive Decoder For Controllable Neural Response Generation, Weichao Wang, Shi Feng, Wei Gao, Daling Wang, Yifei Zhang Apr 2020

A Cue Adaptive Decoder For Controllable Neural Response Generation, Weichao Wang, Shi Feng, Wei Gao, Daling Wang, Yifei Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In open-domain dialogue systems, dialogue cues such as emotion, persona, and emoji can be incorporated into conversation models for strengthening the semantic relevance of generated responses. Existing neural response generation models either incorporate dialogue cue into decoder’s initial state or embed the cue indiscriminately into the state of every generated word, which may cause the gradients of the embedded cue to vanish or disturb the semantic relevance of generated words during back propagation. In this paper, we propose a Cue Adaptive Decoder (CueAD) that aims to dynamically determine the involvement of a cue at each generation step in the decoding. …
