Iot+Small Data: Transforming In-Store Shopping Analytics And Services, Meera Radhakrishnan, Sougata Sen, Vigneshwaran Subbaraju, Archan Misra, Rajesh Balan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We espouse a vision of small data-based immersive retail analytics, where a combination of sensor data, from personal wearable-devices and store-deployed sensors & IoT devices, is used to create real-time, individualized services for in-store shoppers. Key challenges include (a) appropriate joint mining of sensor & wearable data to capture a shopper’s product level interactions, and (b) judicious triggering of power-hungry wearable sensors (e.g., camera) to capture only relevant portions of a shopper’s in-store activities. To explore the feasibility of our vision, we conducted experiments with 5 smartwatch-wearing users who interacted with objects placed on cupboard racks in our lab (to …

All Your Sessions Are Belong To Us: Investigating Authenticator Leakage Through Backup Channels On Android, Guangdong Bai, Jun Sun, Jianliang Wu, Quanqi Ye, Li Li, Jin Song Dong, Shanqing Guo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Security of authentication protocols heavily relies on the confidentiality of credentials (or authenticators) like passwords and session IDs. However, unlike browser-based web applications for which highly evolved browsers manage the authenticators, Android apps have to construct their own management. We find that most apps simply locate their authenticators into the persistent storage and entrust underlying Android OS for mediation. Consequently, these authenticators can be leaked through compromised backup channels. In this work, we conduct the first systematic investigation on this previously overlooked attack vector. We find that nearly all backup apps on Google Play inadvertently expose backup data to any …

Supercnn: A Superpixelwise Convolutional Neural Network For Salient Object Detection, Shengfeng He, Rynson W.H. Lau, Wenxi Liu, Zhe Huang, Qingxiong Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing computational models for salient object detection primarily rely on hand-crafted features, which are only able to capture low-level contrast information. In this paper, we learn the hierarchical contrast features by formulating salient object detection as a binary labeling problem using deep learning techniques. A novel superpixelwise convolutional neural network approach, called SuperCNN, is proposed to learn the internal representations of saliency in an efficient manner. In contrast to the classical convolutional networks, SuperCNN has four main properties. First, the proposed method is able to learn the hierarchical contrast features, as it is fed by two meaningful superpixel sequences, which …

On Top-K Selection In Multi-Armed Bandits And Hidden Bipartite Graphs, Wei Cao, Jian Li, Yufei Tao, Zhize Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper discusses how to efficiently choose from $n$ unknown distributions the $k$ ones whose means are the greatest by a certain metric, up to a small relative error. We study the topic under two standard settings---multi-armed bandits and hidden bipartite graphs---which differ in the nature of the input distributions. In the former setting, each distribution can be sampled (in the i.i.d. manner) an arbitrary number of times, whereas in the latter, each distribution is defined on a population of a finite size $m$ (and hence, is fully revealed after m samples). For both settings, we prove lower bounds on …

Oriented Object Proposals, Shengfeng He, Rynson W. H. Lau Dec 2015

Oriented Object Proposals, Shengfeng He, Rynson W. H. Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a new approach to generate oriented object proposals (OOPs) to reduce the detection error caused by various orientations of the object. To this end, we propose to efficiently locate object regions according to pixelwise object probability, rather than measuring the objectness from a set of sampled windows. We formulate the proposal generation problem as a generative probabilistic model such that object proposals of different shapes (i.e., sizes and orientations) can be produced by locating the local maximum likelihoods. The new approach has three main advantages. First, it helps the object detector handle objects of different …

Learning And Controlling Network Diffusion In Dependent Cascade Models, Jiali Du, Pradeep Varakantham, Akshat Kumar, Shih-Fen Cheng Dec 2015

Learning And Controlling Network Diffusion In Dependent Cascade Models, Jiali Du, Pradeep Varakantham, Akshat Kumar, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Diffusion processes have increasingly been used to represent flow of ideas, traffic and diseases in networks. Learning and controlling the diffusion dynamics through management actions has been studied extensively in the context of independent cascade models, where diffusion on outgoing edges from a node are independent of each other. Our work, in contrast, addresses (a) learning diffusion taking management actions to alter the diffusion dynamics to achieve a desired outcome in dependent cascade models. A key characteristic of such dependent cascade models is the flow preservation at all nodes in the network. For example, traffic and people flow is preserved …

Bl-Mle: Block-Level Message-Locked Encryption For Secure Large File Deduplication, Rongmao Chen, Yi Mu, Guomin Yang, Fuchun Guo Dec 2015

Bl-Mle: Block-Level Message-Locked Encryption For Secure Large File Deduplication, Rongmao Chen, Yi Mu, Guomin Yang, Fuchun Guo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Deduplication is a popular technique widely used to save storage spaces in the cloud. To achieve secure deduplication of encrypted files, Bellare et al. formalized a new cryptographic primitive named message-locked encryption (MLE) in Eurocrypt 2013. Although an MLE scheme can be extended to obtain secure deduplication for large files, it requires a lot of metadata maintained by the end user and the cloud server. In this paper, we propose a new approach to achieve more efficient deduplication for (encrypted) large files. Our approach, named block-level message-locked encryption (BL-MLE), can achieve file-level and block-level deduplication, block key management, and proof …

Incremental Dcop Search Algorithms For Solving Dynamic Dcop Problems, William Yeoh, Pradeep Varakantham, Xiaoxun Sun, Sven Koenig

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Distributed constraint optimization (DCOP) problems are well-suited for modeling multi-agent coordination problems. However, it only models static problems, which do not change over time. Consequently, researchers have introduced the Dynamic DCOP (DDCOP) model to model dynamic problems. In this paper, we make two key contributions: (a) a procedure to reason with the incremental changes in DDCOPs and (b) an incremental pseudo-tree construction algorithm that can be used by DCOP algorithms such as any-space ADOPT and any-space BnB-ADOPT to solve DDCOPs. Due to the incremental reasoning employed, our experimental results show that any-space ADOPT and any-space BnB-ADOPT are up to 42% …

Differentially Private Subspace Clustering, Yining Wang, Yu-Xiang Wang, Aarti Singh Dec 2015

Differentially Private Subspace Clustering, Yining Wang, Yu-Xiang Wang, Aarti Singh

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Subspace clustering is an unsupervised learning problem that aims at grouping data points into multiple “clusters” so that data points in a single cluster lie approximately on a low-dimensional linear subspace. It is originally motivated by 3D motion segmentation in computer vision, but has recently been generically applied to a wide range of statistical machine learning problems, which often involves sensitive datasets about human subjects. This raises a dire concern for data privacy. In this work, we build on the framework of differential privacy and present two provably private subspace clustering algorithms. We demonstrate via both theory and experiments that …

Building Crowd Movement Model Using Sample-Based Mobility Survey, Larry J. J. Lin, Shih-Fen Cheng, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Crowd simulation is a well-studied topic, yet it usually focuses on visualization. In this paper, we study a special class of crowd simulation, where individual agents have diverse backgrounds, ad hoc objectives, and non-repeating visits. Such crowd simulation is particularly useful when modeling human agents movement in leisure settings such as visiting museums or theme parks. In these settings, we are interested in accurately estimating aggregate crowd-related movement statistics. As comprehensive monitoring is usually not feasible for a large crowd, we propose to conduct mobility surveys on only a small group of sampled individuals. We demonstrate via simulation that we …

Active Crowdsourcing For Annotation, Shuji Hao, Chunyan Miao, Steven C. H. Hoi, Peilin Zhao Dec 2015

Active Crowdsourcing For Annotation, Shuji Hao, Chunyan Miao, Steven C. H. Hoi, Peilin Zhao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Crowdsourcing has shown great potential in obtaining large-scale and cheap labels for different tasks. However, obtaining reliable labels is challenging due to several reasons, such as noisy annotators, limited budget and so on. The state-of-the-art approaches, either suffer in some noisy scenarios, or rely on unlimited resources to acquire reliable labels. In this article, we adopt the learning with expert~(AKA worker in crowdsourcing) advice framework to robustly infer accurate labels by considering the reliability of each worker. However, in order to accurately predict the reliability of each worker, traditional learning with expert advice will consult with external oracles~(AKA domain experts) …

Bep: Bit Error Pattern Measurement And Analysis In Ieee 802.11, Jiayue Li, Zimu Zhou, Chen Zhang, Liang Yin, Lionel M. Ni

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The IEEE 802.11 is a set of Media Access Control (MAC) and Physical Layer (PHY) specifications which concern the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) service. However, most IEEE 802.11 WLAN services are easily affected by external elements, such as the homogeneous interference caused by the high-density deployment of IEEE 802.11 devices, the attenuation effect caused by complicated indoor obstacles, and the heterogeneous interference caused by other devices which operate out of unlicensed 2.4GHz ISM bands. In this paper, we first present a method to capture IEEE 802.11n Bit Error Patterns (BEP) under the network effect such as the homogeneous interference …

A Misspecification Test For Logit Based Route Choice Models, Tien Mai, Emma Frejinger, Fabian Bastin Dec 2015

A Misspecification Test For Logit Based Route Choice Models, Tien Mai, Emma Frejinger, Fabian Bastin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The multinomial logit (MNL) model is often used for analyzing route choices in real networks in spite of the fact that path utilities are believed to be correlated. Yet, statistical tests for model misspecification are rarely used. This paper shows how the information matrix test for model misspecification proposed byWhite (1982) can be applied to test path-based and link-based MNL route choice models. We present a Monte Carlo experiment using simulated data to assess the size and the power of the test and to compare its performance with the IIA (Hausman and McFadden, 1984) and McFadden–Train Lagrange multiplier (McFadden and Train, …

Progressive Sequence Matching For Adl Plan Recommendation, Shan Gao, Di Wang, Ah-Hwee Tan, Chunyan Miao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) are indicatives of a person’s lifestyle. In particular, daily ADL routines closely relate to a person’s well-being. With the objective of promoting active lifestyles, this paper presents an agent system that provides recommendations of suitable ADL plans (i.e., selected ADL sequences) to individual users based on the more active lifestyles of the others. Specifically, we develop a set of quantitative measures, named wellness scores, spanning the evaluation across the physical, cognitive, emotion, and social aspects based on his or her ADL routines. Then we propose an ADL sequence learning model, named Recommendation ADL ART, or …

Robust Execution Strategies For Project Scheduling With Unreliable Resources And Stochastic Durations, Na Fu, Hoong Chuin Lau, Pradeep Varakantham Dec 2015

Robust Execution Strategies For Project Scheduling With Unreliable Resources And Stochastic Durations, Na Fu, Hoong Chuin Lau, Pradeep Varakantham

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The resource-constrained project scheduling problem with minimum and maximum time lags (RCPSP/max) is a general model for resource scheduling in many real-world problems (such as manufacturing and construction engineering). We consider RCPSP/max problems where the durations of activities are stochastic and resources can have unforeseen breakdowns. Given a level of allowable risk, (Formula presented.), our mechanisms aim to compute the minimum robust makespan execution strategy. Robust makespan for an execution strategy is any makespan value that has a risk less than (Formula presented.). The risk for a makespan value, (Formula presented.) given an execution strategy, is the probability that a …

Security Slicing For Auditing Xml, Xpath, And Sql Injection Vulnerabilities, Julian Thome, Lwin Khin Shar, Lionel Briand Nov 2015

Security Slicing For Auditing Xml, Xpath, And Sql Injection Vulnerabilities, Julian Thome, Lwin Khin Shar, Lionel Briand

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

XML, XPath, and SQL injection vulnerabilities are among the most common and serious security issues for Web applications and Web services. Thus, it is important for security auditors to ensure that the implemented code is, to the extent possible, free from these vulnerabilities before deployment. Although existing taint analysis approaches could automatically detect potential vulnerabilities in source code, they tend to generate many false warnings. Furthermore, the produced traces, i.e. dataflow paths from input sources to security-sensitive operations, tend to be incomplete or to contain a great deal of irrelevant information. Therefore, it is difficult to identify real vulnerabilities and …

Shopminer: Mining Customer Shopping Behavior In Physical Clothing Stores With Passive Rfids, Longfei Shangguan, Zimu Zhou, Xiaolong Zheng, Lei Yang, Yunhao Liu, Jinsong Han Nov 2015

Shopminer: Mining Customer Shopping Behavior In Physical Clothing Stores With Passive Rfids, Longfei Shangguan, Zimu Zhou, Xiaolong Zheng, Lei Yang, Yunhao Liu, Jinsong Han

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Shopping behavior data are of great importance to understand the effectiveness of marketing and merchandising efforts. Online clothing stores are capable capturing customer shopping behavior by analyzing the click stream and customer shopping carts. Retailers with physical clothing stores, however, still lack effective methods to identify comprehensive shopping behaviors. In this paper, we show that backscatter signals of passive RFID tags can be exploited to detect and record how customers browse stores, which items of clothes they pay attention to, and which items of clothes they usually match with. The intuition is that the phase readings of tags attached on …

Interpolation Guided Compositional Verification, Shang-Wei Lin, Jun Sun, Truong Khanh Nguyen, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong Nov 2015

Interpolation Guided Compositional Verification, Shang-Wei Lin, Jun Sun, Truong Khanh Nguyen, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Model checking suffers from the state space explosion problem. Compositional verification techniques such as assume-guarantee reasoning (AGR) have been proposed to alleviate the problem. However, there are at least three challenges in applying AGR. Firstly, given a system M1 M2, how do we automatically construct and refine (in the presence of spurious counterexamples) an assumption A2, which must be an abstraction of M2? Previous approaches suggest to incrementally learn and modify the assumption through multiple invocations of a model checker, which could be often time consuming. Secondly, how do we keep the state space small when checking M1 A2 |= …

Should Fixing These Failures Be Delegated To Automated Program Repair?, Le Dinh Xuan Bach, Le Bui Tien Duy, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Program repair constitutes one of the major components of software maintenance that usually incurs a significant cost in software production. Automated program repair is supposed to help in reducing the software maintenance cost by automatically fixing software defects. Despite the recent advances in automated software repair, it is still very costly to wait for repair tools to produce valid repairs of defects. This paper addresses the following question: "Will an automated program repair technique find a repair for a defect within a reasonable time?". To answer this question, we build an oracle that can predict whether fixing a failure should …

Real-Time Detection Of Seat Occupancy And Hogging, Huy Hoang Nguyen, Nakul Gulati, Youngki Lee, Rajesh Krishna Balan Nov 2015

Real-Time Detection Of Seat Occupancy And Hogging, Huy Hoang Nguyen, Nakul Gulati, Youngki Lee, Rajesh Krishna Balan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a cheap and effective solution to detect if specific seats at a shared public table are occupied -- either by humans or by objects (i.e., the seats are being "hogged"). The hogging of seats, in particular, is a big problem for our campus library and required a large amount of manpower to correct (to find and clear hogged seats). We propose using two different cheap sensors, a capacitance sensor and an infrared (IR) sensor, to solve this problem. In the rest of this paper, we show how using these sensors can accurately determine if a …

Powerforecaster: Predicting Smartphone Power Impact Of Continuous Sensing Applications At Pre-Installation Time, Chulhong Min, Youngki Lee, Chungkuk Yoo, Seungwoo Kang, Sangwon Choi, Pillsoon Park, Inseok Hwang, Younghyun Ju, Seungpyo Choi, Junehwa Song

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Today's smartphone application (hereinafter 'app') markets miss a key piece of information, power consumption of apps. This causes a severe problem for continuous sensing apps as they consume significant power without users' awareness. Users have no choice but to repeatedly install one app after another and experience their power use. To break such an exhaustive cycle, we propose PowerForecaster, a system that provides users with power use of sensing apps at pre-installation time. Such advanced power estimation is extremely challenging since the power cost of a sensing app largely varies with users' physical activities and phone use patterns. We observe …

Codehow: Effective Code Search Based On Api Understanding And Extended Boolean Model (E), Fei Lv, Jian-Guang Lou, Shaowei Wang, Dongmei Zhang, Jainjun Zhao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Over the years of software development, a vast amount of source code has been accumulated. Many code search tools were proposed to help programmers reuse previously-written code by performing free-text queries over a large-scale codebase. Our experience shows that the accuracy of these code search tools are often unsatisfactory. One major reason is that existing tools lack of query understanding ability. In this paper, we propose CodeHow, a code search technique that can recognize potential APIs a user query refers to. Having understood the potentially relevant APIs, CodeHow expands the query with the APIs and performs code retrieval by applying …

Automating The Performance Deviation Analysis For Multiple System Releases: An Evolutionary Study, Felipe Pinto, Uirá Kulesza, Christoph Treude

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a scenario-based approach for the evaluation of the quality attribute of performance, measured in terms of execution time (response time). The approach is implemented by a framework that uses dynamic analysis and repository mining techniques to provide an automated way for revealing potential sources of performance degradation of scenarios between releases of a software system. The approach defines four phases: (i) preparation – choosing the scenarios and preparing the target releases; (ii) dynamic analysis – determining the performance of scenarios and methods by calculating their execution time; (iii) degradation analysis – processing and comparing the results of …

Event Detection In Wireless Sensor Networks In Random Spatial Sensors Deployments, Pengfei Zhang, Ido Nevat, Gareth W. Peters, Gaoxi Xiao, Hwee-Pink Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We develop a new class of event detection algorithms in Wireless Sensor Networks where the sensors are randomly deployed spatially. We formulate the detection problem as a binary hypothesis testing problem and design the optimal decision rules for two scenarios, namely the Poisson Point Process and Binomial Point Process random deployments. To calculate the intractable marginal likelihood density, we develop three types of series expansion methods which are based on an Askey-orthogonal polynomials. In addition, we develop a novel framework to provide guidance on which series expansion is most suitable (i.e., most accurate) to use for different system parameters. Extensive …

Human Action Recognition In Unconstrained Videos By Explicit Motion Modeling, Yu-Gang Jiang, Qi Dai, Wei Liu, Xiangyang Xue, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Human action recognition in unconstrained videos is a challenging problem with many applications. Most state-of-the-art approaches adopted the well-known bag-of-features representations, generated based on isolated local patches or patch trajectories, where motion patterns, such as object-object and object-background relationships are mostly discarded. In this paper, we propose a simple representation aiming at modeling these motion relationships. We adopt global and local reference points to explicitly characterize motion information, so that the final representation is more robust to camera movements, which widely exist in unconstrained videos. Our approach operates on the top of visual codewords generated on dense local patch trajectories, …

Challenges In Analyzing Software Documentation In Portuguese, Christoph Treude, Carlos A. Prolo, Fernando Figueira Filho

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many tools that automatically analyze, summarize, or transform software artifacts rely on natural language processing tooling for the interpretation of natural language text produced by software developers, such as documentation, code comments, commit messages, or bug reports. Processing natural language text produced by software developers is challenging because of unique characteristics not found in other texts, such as the presence of code terms and the systematic use of incomplete sentences. In addition, texts produced by Portuguese-speaking developers mix languages since many keywords and programming concepts are referred to by their English name. In this paper, we provide empirical insights into …
