Supply, Demand, And Minimum Wage: Unraveling U.S. Wage Inequality From 1963-2021, Daniil Frolov
Supply, Demand, And Minimum Wage: Unraveling U.S. Wage Inequality From 1963-2021, Daniil Frolov
Publications and Research
From 1963 to 2021, the U.S. evolved from a manual to a knowledge-based economy, intensifying the wage gap between skilled and unskilled workers. Using the CPS ASEC supplements and building on Autor, Katz, and Kearny 2008, this study contrasts two perspectives: the traditionalist view, associating rising inequality with increased demand for skilled labor, and the revisionist view, which sees it as a one-off event due to declining real minimum wage. Analyzing 90-10 inequality, left-tail (50-10) vs. right-tail (90-50) inequality, and college vs. high-school wage premiums, findings suggest a secular rise in inequality driven by technological innovation and demand for skilled …

Resource Sharing In Cognitive Control: Behavioral Evidence And Neural Substrates, Tingting Wu, Alfredo Spagna, Melissa-Ann Mackie, Jin Fan
Publications and Research
Cognitive control is a capacity-limited function responsible for the resolution of conflict among competing cognitive processes. However, whether cognitive control handles multiple concurrent requests through a single bottleneck or a resource sharing mechanism remains elusive. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging study, we examined the effect of dual flanker conflict processing on behavioral performance and on activation in regions of the cognitive control network (CCN). In each trial, participants completed two flanker conflict tasks (T1 and T2) sequentially, with the stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) varied as short (100 ms) and long (1000 ms). We found a significant conflict effect (indexed …

‘Welcoming’ Guests: The Role Of Ideational And Contextual Factors In Public Perceptions About Refugees And Attitudes About Their Integration, H. Ege Ozen, Aysenur Dal, Efe Tokdemir
Publications and Research
In this study, we aim to explore the ideational and contextual sources of perceptions about refugees. Contrary to many studies focusing on the interaction with and integration of refugees in developed countries, we examine the effect of social identity and refugee exposure on the perception of refugees in Turkey, which pose a substantive case with a background of ethnic conflict and scarce resources. We contend that social identities provide individuals with cues; however, we argue that identity type and its salience are key to understanding in-group vs. out-group formation processes, hence the perceptions about refugees. Moreover, we argue that socioeconomic …

Multichannel Modulation Of Depolarizing And Repolarizing Ion Currents Increases The Positive Rate-Dependent Action Potential Prolongation, Candido Cabo
Publications and Research
Prolongation of the action potential duration (APD) could prevent reentrant arrhythmias if prolongation occurs at the fast excitation rates of tachycardia with minimal prolongation at slow excitation rates (i.e., if prolongation is positive rate-dependent). APD prolongation by current anti-arrhythmic agents is either reverse (larger APD prolongation at slow rates than at fast rates) or neutral (similar APD prolongation at slow and fast rates), which may not result in an effective anti-arrhythmic action. In this report we show that, in computer models of the human ventricular action potential, the combined modulation of both depolarizing and repolarizing ion currents results in a …

Developing A Method To Study To Examine Lookism On Social Media, Shana Ramnarain, Alyssa Dana Adomaitis
Developing A Method To Study To Examine Lookism On Social Media, Shana Ramnarain, Alyssa Dana Adomaitis
Publications and Research
“Lookism” is a term to describe appearance discrimination or “the practice of discrimination on the basis of physical appearance in the workplace” (Ghodrati, Joorabchi, & Muati, 2015, p.1). In popular literature, it has been called “beauty prejudice” (Etcoff, 1999, p. 1). The notion that a pleasing appearance results in favorable outcomes (e.g., higher wages, promotions) from others is not necessarily new, as literature on physical attractiveness is rather extensive. The Washington Post Magazine first used the term “lookism” in 1978 (e.g., Ayto, 1999), however, the term “lookism” was first recognized as a form of discrimination by authors of the Oxford …
