Quantitative Model For Rationalizing Solvent Effect In Noncovalent Ch-Aryl Interactions, Bright C. Emenike, Sara N. Bey, Brianna C. Bigelow, Srinivas V.S. Chakravartula Jan 2016

Quantitative Model For Rationalizing Solvent Effect In Noncovalent Ch-Aryl Interactions, Bright C. Emenike, Sara N. Bey, Brianna C. Bigelow, Srinivas V.S. Chakravartula

Publications and Research

The strength of CH–aryl interactions (ΔG) in 14 solvents was determined via the conformational analysis of a molecular torsion balance. The molecular balance adopted folded and unfolded conformers in which the ratio of the conformers in solution provided a quantitative measure of ΔG as a function of solvation. While a single empirical solvent parameter based on solvent polarity failed to explain solvent effect in the molecular balance, it is shown that these ΔG values can be correlated through a multiparameter linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) using the equation introduced by Kamlet and Taft. The resulting LSER …

Assessing Urban Greenhouse Gas Emissions In European Medium And Large Cities: Methodological Considerations, Peter Marcotullio, Andrea Sarzynski, Jochen Albrecht, Niels Schulz, Jake Garcia Jan 2016

Assessing Urban Greenhouse Gas Emissions In European Medium And Large Cities: Methodological Considerations, Peter Marcotullio, Andrea Sarzynski, Jochen Albrecht, Niels Schulz, Jake Garcia

Publications and Research

Policymakers need clear, consistent, and reliable information about the location of greenhouse gases and drivers of emitting activity in order to design appropriate mitigating strategies. At the urban scale, there have been challenges in developing consistent and reliable emissions inventories. This chapter examines selected methods to determine greenhouse gas emissions at the urban scale. We describe the various criteria considered when constructing an urban greenhouse gas protocol including the definition of urban, the gasses that are measured, the source they come from, the scope of analysis and how the measurements are undertaken. We then present results for European medium and …

Engineering Semiconductor Hybrids For Sensing, Godfrey Gumbs, Andrii Iurov, Danhong Huang Jan 2016

Engineering Semiconductor Hybrids For Sensing, Godfrey Gumbs, Andrii Iurov, Danhong Huang

Publications and Research

The effect of screening of the coulomb interaction between two layers of two-dimensional electrons, such as in graphene, by a highly doped semiconducting substrate is investigated. We employ the random-phase approximation to calculate the dispersion equation of this hybrid structure in order to determine the plasmon excitation spectrum. When an electric current is passed through a layer, the low-frequency plasmons in the layer may bifurcate into separate streams due to the current-driving effect. At a critical wave vector, determined by the separation between layers and their distance from the surface, their phase velocities may be in opposite directions and a …

The Bou Dahar Jurassic Carbonate-Hosted Pb–Zn–Ba Deposits (Oriental High Atlas, Morocco): Fluid-Inclusion And C–O–S–Pb Isotope Studies, Larbi Rddad, Salah Bouhlel Jan 2016

The Bou Dahar Jurassic Carbonate-Hosted Pb–Zn–Ba Deposits (Oriental High Atlas, Morocco): Fluid-Inclusion And C–O–S–Pb Isotope Studies, Larbi Rddad, Salah Bouhlel

Publications and Research

The Bou Dahar Pb–Zn–Ba (±Sr) is hosted in the Lower and Middle Liassic carbonate platform in the oriental High Atlas of Morocco. The paragenetic sequence includes quartz–pyrite–melnicovite–sphalerite–galena– calcite–barite ± fluorite– ± celestite. Fluid-inclusion studies were conducted on sphalerite (early mineralizing stage) and barite, and celestite (late mineralizing stage). These studies reveal two end-member fluids, a hot (~143 °C) and saline fluid (~23 wt.% NaCl eq.) and a cooler (b50 °C) and diluted fluid (~5 wt.% NaCl eq.). Based on fluid-inclusion and C–O–S isotope studies, a conclusion is reached that the Bou Dahar ore deposits were formed by the mixing of …

Champions: The Cornerstone Of Pltl Programs, A.E. Dreyfuss

Publications and Research

What drives people to keep working with Peer-Led Team Learning? Such people could be called “champions,” because no matter what the odds, they keep struggling to ensure the continuity of their campus program, promoting expected and unexpected outcomes. Champions are the cornerstone of PLTL programs, because without champions Peer-Led Team Learning would not continue to work

Factororacle: An Extensible Max External For Investigating Applications Of The Factor Oracle Automaton In Real-Time Music Improvisation, Adam James Wilson Jan 2016

Factororacle: An Extensible Max External For Investigating Applications Of The Factor Oracle Automaton In Real-Time Music Improvisation, Adam James Wilson

Publications and Research

There are several extant software systems designed to generate music in real-time using a factor oracle automaton constructed from the musical input of a human improvisor. The impetus for the design of the factorOracle external is neither a desire to supersede these systems nor introduce novel algorithms for traversing the oracle, but rather to provide a fast, canonical interface for the automaton in Cycling74’s Max and, in future iterations, the Pure Data programming environment. Technical features of the factorOracle software are introduced here.

Band Gap Engineering Of N-Alloyed Ga2o3 Thin Films, Dongyu Song, Li Li, Bingsheng Li, Yu Sui, Aidong Shen Jan 2016

Band Gap Engineering Of N-Alloyed Ga2o3 Thin Films, Dongyu Song, Li Li, Bingsheng Li, Yu Sui, Aidong Shen

Publications and Research

The authors report the tuning of band gap of GaON ternary alloy in a wide range of 2.75 eV. The samples were prepared by a two-step nitridation method. First, the samples were deposited on 2-inch fused silica substrates by megnetron sputtering with NH3 and Ar gas for 60 minutes. Then they were annealed in NH3 ambience at different temperatures. The optical band gap energies are calculated from transmittance measurements. With the increase of nitridation temperature, the band gap gradually decreases from 4.8 eV to 2.05 eV. X-ray diffraction results indicate that as-deposited amorphous samples can crystallize into monoclinic and hexagonal …

Forecasting The Senate Vote On The Supreme Court Vacancy, Scott J. Basinger, Maxwell Mak Jan 2016

Forecasting The Senate Vote On The Supreme Court Vacancy, Scott J. Basinger, Maxwell Mak

Publications and Research

This paper forecasts current senators’ votes on Merrick Garland’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court, in the unlikely case that a vote actually takes place. The forecasts are necessarily conditional, awaiting measurement of the nominee’s characteristics. Nonetheless, a model that combines parameters estimated from existing data with values of some measurable characteristics of senators—particularly their party affiliations, party loyalty levels, and ideological positions—is sufficient to identify potential swing voters in the Senate. By accounting for a more nuanced and refined understanding of the confirmation process, our model reveals that if President Obama were to nominate almost any nominee (conservative or …

Who’S Afraid Of Response Bias?, Megan A. K. Peters, Tony Ro, Hakwan Lau Jan 2016

Who’S Afraid Of Response Bias?, Megan A. K. Peters, Tony Ro, Hakwan Lau

Publications and Research

Response bias (or criterion) contamination is insidious in studies of consciousness: that observers report they do not see a stimulus may not mean they have absolutely no subjective experience; they may be giving such reports in relative terms in the context of other stimuli. Bias-free signal detection theoretic measures provide an excellent method for avoiding response bias confounds, and many researchers correctly adopt this approach. However, here we discuss how a fixation on avoiding criterion effects can also be misleading and detrimental to fruitful inquiry. In a recent paper, Balsdon and Azzopardi (Absolute and relative blindsight. Consciousness and Cognition 2015; …

Cryptography With Right-Angled Artin Groups, Ramon Flores, Delaram Kahrobaei Jan 2016

Cryptography With Right-Angled Artin Groups, Ramon Flores, Delaram Kahrobaei

Publications and Research

In this paper we propose right-angled Artin groups as a platform for secret sharing schemes based on the efficiency (linear time) of the word problem. Inspired by previous work of Grigoriev-Shpilrain in the context of graphs, we define two new problems: Subgroup Isomorphism Problem and Group Homomorphism Problem. Based on them, we also propose two new authentication schemes. For right-angled Artin groups, the Group Homomorphism and Graph Homomorphism problems are equivalent, and the later is known to be NP-complete. In the case of the Subgroup Isomorphism problem, we bring some results due to Bridson who shows there are right-angled Artin …

Photonic Topological Chern Insulators Based On Tellegen Metacrystals, Daniel A. Jacobs, Andrey E. Miroshnichenko, Yuri S. Kivshar, Alexander B. Khanikaev Dec 2015

Photonic Topological Chern Insulators Based On Tellegen Metacrystals, Daniel A. Jacobs, Andrey E. Miroshnichenko, Yuri S. Kivshar, Alexander B. Khanikaev

Publications and Research

We demonstrate that topologically nontrivial states of light can be engineered in periodic photonic structures containing media with a Tellegen-type bianisotropic response. Whilst in such bianisotropic materials the time-reversal symmetry is broken, they are characterized by an intrinsic magnetic order which does not require macroscopic magnetization. Our design can therefore be considered as a direct analog of the solid state Chern insulator which exhibits a topological order in the absence of an external bias. Numerical simulations of such Tellegen photonic crystals reveal the existence of one way edge transport at domain walls and perfectly conducting boundaries not sensitive to structural …

Linear Trend Detection In Serially Dependent Hydrometeorological Data Based On A Variance Correction Spearman Rho Method, Wenpeng Weng, Yuanfang Chen, Stefan Becker, Bo Liu Dec 2015

Linear Trend Detection In Serially Dependent Hydrometeorological Data Based On A Variance Correction Spearman Rho Method, Wenpeng Weng, Yuanfang Chen, Stefan Becker, Bo Liu

Publications and Research

Hydrometeorological data are commonly serially dependent and thereby deviate from the assumption of independence that underlies the Spearman rho trend test. The presence of autocorrelation will influence the significance of observed trends. Specifically, the positive autocorrelation inflates Type І errors, while it deflates the power of trend detection in some cases. To address this issue, we derive a theoretical formula and recommend an appropriate empirical formula to calculate the rho variance of dependent series. The proposed procedure of the variance correction for the Spearman rho method is capable of mitigating the effect of autocorrelation on both, Type І error and …

Pathological Brain Detection By A Novel Image Feature—Fractional Fourier Entropy, Shuihua Wang, Yudong Zhang, Xiaojun Yang, Ping Sun, Zhengchao Dong, Aijun Lu, Ti-Fei Yuan

Publications and Research

Aim: To detect pathological brain conditions early is a core procedure for patients so as to have enough time for treatment. Traditional manual detection is either cumbersome, or expensive, or time-consuming. We aim to offer a system that can automatically identify pathological brain images in this paper.Method: We propose a novel image feature, viz., Fractional Fourier Entropy (FRFE), which is based on the combination of Fractional Fourier Transform(FRFT) and Shannon entropy. Afterwards, the Welch’s t-test (WTT) and Mahalanobis distance (MD) were harnessed to select distinguishing features. Finally, we introduced an advanced classifier: twin support vector machine (TSVM). Results: A 10 …

Studies In The History Of Anthropology In The United States, Jay H. Bernstein Dec 2015

Studies In The History Of Anthropology In The United States, Jay H. Bernstein

Publications and Research

I will talk about a study I did on the first persons to do Ph.D.s in anthropology and how the project led to my leaving the anthropology profession and becoming a librarian. The project began in a biographical study of a little-known anthropologist that involved archival work. As a librarian who has left the profession of anthropology (not without trauma), I remain keenly interested in the history and bibliography of anthropology and view dissertation projects as crucial to understanding the biographies of scholars and trends in academic professions.

Evaluation Of Viirs Land Surface Temperature Using Crest-Safe Air, Snow Surface, And Soil Temperature Data, Carlos L. Pérez Díaz, Tarendra Lakhankar, Peter Romanov, Reza Khanbilvardi, Yunyue Yu Dec 2015

Evaluation Of Viirs Land Surface Temperature Using Crest-Safe Air, Snow Surface, And Soil Temperature Data, Carlos L. Pérez Díaz, Tarendra Lakhankar, Peter Romanov, Reza Khanbilvardi, Yunyue Yu

Publications and Research

In this study, the Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Land Surface Temperature (LST) Environmental Data Record (EDR) was evaluated against snow surface (T-skin) and near-surface air temperature (T-air) ground observations recorded at the Cooperative Remote Sensing Science and Technology Center—Snow Analysis and Field Experiment (CREST-SAFE), located in Caribou, ME, USA during the winters of 2013 and 2014. The satellite LST corroboration of snow-covered areas is imperative because high-latitude regions are often physically inaccessible and there is a need to complement the data from the existing meteorological station networks. T-skin is not a standard meteorological parameter commonly observed at synoptic …

Nmr Studies Of Solvent-Free Ceramic Composite Polymer Electrolytes—A Brief Review, Marc B. Berman, Steven Greenbaum

Publications and Research

Polyether-based polymer electrolytes containing ceramic inorganic oxide fillers often exhibit improved mechanical and ion transport properties compared to their filler-free counterparts. The nature of local scale interactions that give rise to these enhanced properties is explored by nuclear magnetic resonance measurements.

Development And Evaluation Of A Multi-Year Fractional Surface Water Data Set Derived From Active/Passive Microwave Remote Sensing Data, Ronny Schroeder, Kyle C. Mcdonald, Bruce D. Chapman, Katherine Jensen, Erika Podest, Zachary D. Tessler, Theodore J. Bohn, Reiner Zimmermann Dec 2015

Development And Evaluation Of A Multi-Year Fractional Surface Water Data Set Derived From Active/Passive Microwave Remote Sensing Data, Ronny Schroeder, Kyle C. Mcdonald, Bruce D. Chapman, Katherine Jensen, Erika Podest, Zachary D. Tessler, Theodore J. Bohn, Reiner Zimmermann

Publications and Research

The sensitivity of Earth’s wetlands to observed shifts in global precipitation and temperature patterns and their ability to produce large quantities of methane gas are key global change questions. We present a microwave satellite-based approach for mapping fractional surface water (FW) globally at 25-km resolution. The approach employs a land cover-supported, atmospherically-corrected dynamic mixture model applied to 20+ years (1992–2013) of combined, daily, passive/active microwave remote sensing data. The resulting product, known as Surface WAter Microwave Product Series (SWAMPS), shows strong microwave sensitivity to sub-grid scale open water and inundated wetlands comprising open plant canopies. SWAMPS’ FW compares favorably (R2 …

Egf As A New Therapeutic Target For Medulloblastoma Metastasis, Jennifer Rico-Varela, Tanya Singh, Sean Mccutcheon, Maribel Vazquez Dec 2015

Egf As A New Therapeutic Target For Medulloblastoma Metastasis, Jennifer Rico-Varela, Tanya Singh, Sean Mccutcheon, Maribel Vazquez

Publications and Research

Medulloblastoma (MB) is a malignant pediatric brain tumor known for its aggressive metastatic potential. Despite the well-documented migration of MB cells to other parts of the brain and spinal column, MB chemotaxis is poorly understood. Herein, we examined the in vitro migratory and cellular responses of MB-derived cells to external signaling of Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF-BB), and the stromal cellderived factors 1-alpha (SDF-1). Experiments utilized transwell assays and immunocytochemistry to identify receptor activation in MB migration, and used a microfluidic platform to examine directionality, trajectory, and gradient-dependence of motile cells. Data illustrates …

Hybrid Sol–Gel Glasses With Glass-Transition Temperatures Below Room Temperature, Andrei Jitianu, Guadalupe Gonzalez, Lisa C. Klein Dec 2015

Hybrid Sol–Gel Glasses With Glass-Transition Temperatures Below Room Temperature, Andrei Jitianu, Guadalupe Gonzalez, Lisa C. Klein

Publications and Research

Melting gels are hybrid gels that have the ability to soften and flow at around 100 ° C for some combinations of mono- and di-substituted alkoxysiloxanes, where substitutions are either all aromatic or all aliphatic. In this study, melting gels were prepared using phenyltriethoxysilane (PhTES) and dimethyldiethoxysilane (DMDES), meaning both an aromatic and aliphatic substitution. Differential scanning calorimetry was performed to identify glass-transition temperatures, and thermal gravimetric analysis coupled with differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA) was performed to measure weight loss. The glass-transition temperatures ( T g ) ranged from – 61 ° C to + 5.6 ° C, which are …

Boundary Conditions As Dynamical Fields, V. Parameswaran Nair, Dimitra Karabali Dec 2015

Boundary Conditions As Dynamical Fields, V. Parameswaran Nair, Dimitra Karabali

Publications and Research

The possibility of treating boundary conditions in terms of a bilocal dynamical field is formalized in terms of a boundary action. This allows for a simple path-integral perturbation theory approach to physical effects such as radiation from a time-dependent boundary. The nature of the action which governs the dynamics of the bilocal field is investigated for a limited case (which includes the Robin boundary conditions).

Linear algebra makes these computer animation techniques possible; …

D-Brane Instantons As Gauge Instantons In Orientifolds Of Chiral Quiver Theories, Sebastian Franco, Ander Retolaza, Angel Uranga Nov 2015

D-Brane Instantons As Gauge Instantons In Orientifolds Of Chiral Quiver Theories, Sebastian Franco, Ander Retolaza, Angel Uranga

Publications and Research

Systems of D3-branes at orientifold singularities can receive non-perturbative D-brane instanton corrections, inducing field theory operators in the 4d effective theory. In certain non-chiral examples, these systems have been realized as the infrared end point of a Seiberg duality cascade, in which the D-brane instanton effects arise from strong gauge theory dynamics. We present the rst UV duality cascade completion of chiral D3-brane theories, in which the D-brane instantons arise from gauge theory dynamics. Chiral examples are interesting because the instanton fermion zero mode sector is topologically protected, and therefore lead to more robust setups. As an application of our …

Cortical Components Of Reaction-Time During Perceptual Decisions In Humans, Jacek P. Dmochowski, Anthony M. Norcia Nov 2015

Cortical Components Of Reaction-Time During Perceptual Decisions In Humans, Jacek P. Dmochowski, Anthony M. Norcia

Publications and Research

The mechanisms of perceptual decision-making are frequently studied through measurements of reaction time (RT). Classical sequential-sampling models (SSMs) of decision-making posit RT as the sum of non-overlapping sensory, evidence accumulation, and motor delays. In contrast, recent empirical evidence hints at a continuous-flow paradigm in which multiple motor plans evolve concurrently with the accumulation of sensory evidence. Here we employ a trial-to-trial reliability-based component analysis of encephalographic data acquired during a random-dot motion task to directly image continuous flow in the human brain. We identify three topographically distinct neural sources whose dynamics exhibit contemporaneous ramping to time-of-response, with the rate and …

Do All Bps Black Hole Microstates Carry Zero Angular Momentum?, Abishek Chowdhury, Richard S. Garavuso, Swapnamay Mondal, Ashoke Sen Nov 2015

Do All Bps Black Hole Microstates Carry Zero Angular Momentum?, Abishek Chowdhury, Richard S. Garavuso, Swapnamay Mondal, Ashoke Sen

Publications and Research

From the analysis of the near horizon geometry and supersymmetry algebra it has been argued that all the microstates of single centered BPS black holes with four unbroken supersymmetries carry zero angular momentum in the region of the moduli space where the black hole description is valid. A stronger form of the conjecture would be that the result holds for any sufficiently generic point in the moduli space. In this paper we set out to test this conjecture for a class of black hole microstates in type II string theory on T6 , represented by four stacks of D-branes wrapped …

A Geometric Approach To Quantum State Separation, E Bagan, V Yerokhin, A Shehu, Edgar Feldman, János A. Bergou Nov 2015

A Geometric Approach To Quantum State Separation, E Bagan, V Yerokhin, A Shehu, Edgar Feldman, János A. Bergou

Publications and Research

Probabilistic quantum state transformations can be characterized by the degree of state separation they provide. This, in turn, sets limits on the success rate of these transformations. We consider optimum state separation of two known pure states in the general case where the known states have arbitrary a priori probabilities. The problem is formulated from a geometric perspective and shown to be equivalent to the problem of finding tangent curves within two families of conics that represent the unitarity constraints and the objective functions to be optimized, respectively. We present the corresponding analytical solutions in various forms. In the limit …

A New Extension Of The Binomial Error Model For Responses To Items Of Varying Difficulty In Educational Testing And Attitude Surveys, James A. Wiley, John Levi Martin, Stephen J. Herschkorn, Jason Bond Nov 2015

A New Extension Of The Binomial Error Model For Responses To Items Of Varying Difficulty In Educational Testing And Attitude Surveys, James A. Wiley, John Levi Martin, Stephen J. Herschkorn, Jason Bond

Publications and Research

We put forward a new item response model which is an extension of the binomial error model first introduced by Keats and Lord. Like the binomial error model, the basic latent variable can be interpreted as a probability of responding in a certain way to an arbitrarily specified item. For a set of dichotomous items, this model gives predictions that are similar to other single parameter IRT models (such as the Rasch model) but has certain advantages in more complex cases. The first is that in specifying a flexible two-parameter Beta distribution for the latent variable, it is easy to …

Hohenberg-Kohn Theorems In Electrostatic And Uniform Magnetostatic Fields, Xiao-Yin Pan, Viraht Sahni Nov 2015

Hohenberg-Kohn Theorems In Electrostatic And Uniform Magnetostatic Fields, Xiao-Yin Pan, Viraht Sahni

Publications and Research

The Hohenberg-Kohn (HK) theorems of bijectivity between the external scalar potential and the gauge invariant nondegenerate ground state density, and the consequent Euler variational principle for the density, are proved for arbitrary electrostatic field and the constraint of fixed electron number. The HK theorems are generalized for spinless electrons to the added presence of an external uniform magnetostatic field by introducing the new constraint of fixed canonical orbital angular momentum. Thereby, a bijective relationship between the external scalar and vector potentials, and the gauge invariant nondegenerate ground state density and physical current density, is proved. A corresponding Euler variational principle …

Evaluation Of The Snow Thermal Model (Sntherm) Through Continuous In Situ Observations Of Snow’S Physical Properties At The Crest-Safe Field Experiment, José Alberto Infante Corona, Jonathan Muñoz, Tarendra Lakhankar, Peter Romanov, Reza Khanbilvardi Nov 2015

Evaluation Of The Snow Thermal Model (Sntherm) Through Continuous In Situ Observations Of Snow’S Physical Properties At The Crest-Safe Field Experiment, José Alberto Infante Corona, Jonathan Muñoz, Tarendra Lakhankar, Peter Romanov, Reza Khanbilvardi

Publications and Research

Snowpack properties like temperature or density are the result of a complex energy and mass balance process in the snowpack that varies temporally and spatially. The Snow Thermal Model (SNTHERM) is a 1-dimensional model, energy and mass balance-driven, that simulates these properties. This article analyzes the simulated snowpack properties using SNTHERM forced with two datasets, namely measured meteorological data at the Cooperative Remote Sensing Science and Technology-Snow Analysis and Field Experiment (CREST-SAFE) site and the National Land Data Assimilation System (NLDAS). The study area is located on the premises of Caribou Municipal Airport at Caribou (ME, USA). The model evaluation …
