Naïve Beliefs About The Natural World In A Case Of Childhood Onset Amnesia, William Winter Oct 2016

Naïve Beliefs About The Natural World In A Case Of Childhood Onset Amnesia, William Winter

Publications and Research

The individual profiled here (M.S.) suffered an episode of severe oxygen deprivation (anoxia) at the age of eight, damaging memory relevant structures in the mid-temporal lobes, including the hippocampus bilaterally. The resulting anterograde amnesia was characterized by profound deficits in autobiographical memory, but also a compromised ability to acquire new facts and information (semantic memory), resulting in the formation of idiosyncratic and naïve beliefs about the natural world that have persisted into his adult years. This article presents an interview with M.S. in which many of these idiosyncratic beliefs are detailed, and argues that they can be broadly viewed as …

Collective Influence Of Multiple Spreaders Evaluated By Tracing Real Information Flow In Large- Scale Social Networks, Xian Teng, Sen Pei, Flaviano Morone, Hernán A. Makse Oct 2016

Collective Influence Of Multiple Spreaders Evaluated By Tracing Real Information Flow In Large- Scale Social Networks, Xian Teng, Sen Pei, Flaviano Morone, Hernán A. Makse

Publications and Research

Identifying the most influential spreaders that maximize information flow is a central question in network theory. Recently, a scalable method called “Collective Influence (CI)” has been put forward through collective influence maximization. In contrast to heuristic methods evaluating nodes’ significance separately, CI method inspects the collective influence of multiple spreaders. Despite that CI applies to the influence maximization problem in percolation model, it is still important to examine its efficacy in realistic information spreading. Here, we examine real-world information flow in various social and scientific platforms including American Physical Society, Facebook, Twitter and LiveJournal. Since empirical data cannot be directly …

Long-Term Data Storage In Diamond, Siddharth Dhomkar, Jacob Henshaw, Harishankar Jayakumar, Carlos A. Meriles Oct 2016

Long-Term Data Storage In Diamond, Siddharth Dhomkar, Jacob Henshaw, Harishankar Jayakumar, Carlos A. Meriles

Publications and Research

The negatively charged nitrogen vacancy (NV−) center in diamond is the focus of widespread attention for applications ranging from quantum information processing to nanoscale metrology. Althoughmostwork so far has focused on the NV− optical and spin properties, control of the charge state promises complementary opportunities. One intriguing possibility is the long-term storage of information, a notion we hereby introduce using NV-rich, type 1b diamond. As a proof of principle, we use multicolor optical microscopy to read, write, and reset arbitrary data sets with twodimensional (2D) binary bit density comparable to present digital-video-disk (DVD) technology. Leveraging on the singular dynamics of …

Evolution From The Plasmon To Exciton State In Ligand-Protected Atomically Precise Gold Nanoparticles, Meng Zhou, Chenjie Zeng, Yuxiang Chen, Shuo Zhao, Matthew Y. Sfeir, Manzhou Zhu, Rongchao Jin Oct 2016

Evolution From The Plasmon To Exciton State In Ligand-Protected Atomically Precise Gold Nanoparticles, Meng Zhou, Chenjie Zeng, Yuxiang Chen, Shuo Zhao, Matthew Y. Sfeir, Manzhou Zhu, Rongchao Jin

Publications and Research

The evolution from the metallic (or plasmonic) to molecular state in metal nanoparticles constitutes a central question in nanoscience research because of its importance in revealing the origin of metallic bonding and offering fundamental insights into the birth of surface plasmon resonance. Previous research has not been able to probe the transition due to the unavailability of atomically precise nanoparticles in the 1-3 nm size regime. Herein, we investigate the transition by performing ultrafast spectroscopic studies on atomically precise thiolate-protected Au25, Au38, Au144, Au333, Au∼520 and Au∼940 nanoparticles. Our results …

Locality, Bulk Equations Of Motion And The Conformal Bootstrap, Daniel N. Kabat, Gilad Lifsch Oct 2016

Locality, Bulk Equations Of Motion And The Conformal Bootstrap, Daniel N. Kabat, Gilad Lifsch

Publications and Research

We develop an approach to construct local bulk operators in a CFT to order 1/N2. Since 4-point functions are not fixed by conformal invariance we use the OPE to categorize possible forms for a bulk operator. Using previous results on 3-point functions we construct a local bulk operator in each OPE channel. We then impose the condition that the bulk operators constructed in different channels agree, and hence give rise to a well-defined bulk operator. We refer to this condition as the “bulk bootstrap.” We argue and explicitly show in some examples that the bulk bootstrap leads to some of …

A P-Value Model For Theoretical Power Analysis And Its Applications In Multiple Testing Procedures, Fengqing Zhang, Jiangtao Gou Oct 2016

A P-Value Model For Theoretical Power Analysis And Its Applications In Multiple Testing Procedures, Fengqing Zhang, Jiangtao Gou

Publications and Research

Background: Power analysis is a critical aspect of the design of experiments to detect an effect of a given size. When multiple hypotheses are tested simultaneously, multiplicity adjustments to p-values should be taken into account in power analysis. There are a limited number of studies on power analysis in multiple testing procedures. For some methods, the theoretical analysis is difficult and extensive numerical simulations are often needed, while other methods oversimplify the information under the alternative hypothesis. To this end, this paper aims to develop a new statistical model for power analysis in multiple testing procedures.

Methods: We propose a …

Large-Scale Off-Target Identification Using Fast And Accurate Dual Regularized One- Class Collaborative Filtering And Its Application To Drug Repurposing, Hansaim Lim, Aleksandar Poleksic, Yuan Yao, Hanghang Tong, Di He, Luke Zhuang, Patrick Meng, Lei Xie Oct 2016

Large-Scale Off-Target Identification Using Fast And Accurate Dual Regularized One- Class Collaborative Filtering And Its Application To Drug Repurposing, Hansaim Lim, Aleksandar Poleksic, Yuan Yao, Hanghang Tong, Di He, Luke Zhuang, Patrick Meng, Lei Xie

Publications and Research

Target-based screening is one of the major approaches in drug discovery. Besides the intended target, unexpected drug off-target interactions often occur, and many of them have not been recognized and characterized. The off-target interactions can be responsible for either therapeutic or side effects. Thus, identifying the genome-wide off-targets of lead compounds or existing drugs will be critical for designing effective and safe drugs, and providing new opportunities for drug repurposing. Although many computational methods have been developed to predict drug-target interactions, they are either less accurate than the one that we are proposing here or computationally too intensive, thereby limiting …

Interplay Between Evanescence And Disorder In Deep Subwavelength Photonic Structures, Hanan Herzig Sheinfux, Ido Kaminer, Azriel Z. Genack, Mordechai Segev

Publications and Research

Deep subwavelength features are expected to have minimal impact on wave transport. Here we show that in contrast to this common understanding, disorder can have a dramatic effect in a one-dimensional disordered optical system with spatial features a thousand times smaller than the wavelength. We examine a unique regime of Anderson localization where the localization length is shown to scale linearly with the wavelength instead of diverging, because of the role of evanescent waves. In addition, we demonstrate an unusual order of magnitude enhancement of transmission induced due to localization. These results are described for electromagnetic waves, but are directly …

Fhf2 Gene Deletion Causes Temperature-Sensitive Cardiac Conduction Failure, David S. Park, Akshay Shekhar, Christopher Marra, Xianming Lin, Carolina Vasquez, Sergio Solinas, Kevin Kelley, Gregory Morley, Mitchell Goldfarb, Glenn I. Fishman Oct 2016

Fhf2 Gene Deletion Causes Temperature-Sensitive Cardiac Conduction Failure, David S. Park, Akshay Shekhar, Christopher Marra, Xianming Lin, Carolina Vasquez, Sergio Solinas, Kevin Kelley, Gregory Morley, Mitchell Goldfarb, Glenn I. Fishman

Publications and Research

Fever is a highly conserved systemic response to infection dating back over 600 million years. Although conferring a survival benefit, fever can negatively impact the function of excitable tissues, such as the heart, producing cardiac arrhythmias. Here we show that mice lacking fibroblast growth factor homologous factor 2 (FHF2) have normal cardiac rhythm at baseline, but increasing core body temperature by as little as 3 C causes coved-type STelevations and progressive conduction failure that is fully reversible upon return to normothermia. FHF2-deficient cardiomyocytes generate action potentials upon current injection at 25 C but are unexcitable at 40 C. The absence …

Non-Hermitian Engineering Of Single Mode Two Dimensional Laser Arrays, Mohammad H. Teimourpour, Li Ge, Demetrios N. Christodoulides, Ramy El-Ganainy Oct 2016

Non-Hermitian Engineering Of Single Mode Two Dimensional Laser Arrays, Mohammad H. Teimourpour, Li Ge, Demetrios N. Christodoulides, Ramy El-Ganainy

Publications and Research

A new scheme for building two dimensional laser arrays that operate in the single supermode regime is proposed. This is done by introducing an optical coupling between the laser array and lossy pseudoisospectral chains of photonic resonators. The spectrum of this discrete reservoir is tailored to suppress all the supermodes of the main array except the fundamental one. This spectral engineering is facilitated by employing the Householder transformation in conjunction with discrete supersymmetry. The proposed scheme is general and can in principle be used in different platforms such as VCSEL arrays and photonic crystal laser arrays.

Stratifying On-Shell Cluster Varieties: The Geometry Of Non-Planar On-Shell Diagrams, Jacob L. Bourjaily, Sebastian Franco, Danielle Galloni, Congkao Wen

Publications and Research

The correspondence between on-shell diagrams in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and cluster varieties in the Grassmannian remains largely unexplored beyond the planar limit. In this article, we describe a systematic program to survey such `on-shell varieties', and use this to provide a complete classification in the case of G(3; 6). In particular, we find exactly 24 top-dimensional varieties and 10 co-dimension one varieties in G(3; 6) | up to parity and relabeling of the external legs. We use this case to illustrate some of the novelties found for non-planar varieties relative to the case of positroids, and describe some of …

Women In The Gis Profession, Livia Betancourt-Mazur, Jochen Albrecht Oct 2016

Women In The Gis Profession, Livia Betancourt-Mazur, Jochen Albrecht

Publications and Research

In many technical professions, women are underrepresented. While a gender imbalance also has been assumed to exist in the realm of professional GIS, no data existed to corroborate it. The original survey presented here was developed by the authors to add both quantitative and qualitative research about the numbers and current experience of women in GIS to address this knowledge gap. A total of 484 women responded to the survey, providing a healthy sample size and a reliable and informative data set.

A key finding is that some 42 percent of women are, overall, not grossly underrepresented in the GIS …

Publications and Research

Coupling a two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor heterostructure to a superconductor opens new research and technology opportunities, including fundamental problems in mesoscopic superconductivity, scalable superconducting electronics, and new topological states of matter. One route towards topological matter is by coupling a 2D electron gas with strong spin–orbit interaction to an s-wave superconductor. Previous efforts along these lines have been adversely affected by interface disorder and unstable gating. Here we show measurements on a gateable InGaAs/InAs 2DEG with patterned epitaxial Al, yielding devices with atomically pristine interfaces between semiconductor and superconductor. Using surface gates to form a quantum point contact (QPC), we find …

An Iterative Approach To Ground Penetrating Radar At The Maya Site Of Pacbitun, Belize, Sheldon Skaggs, Terry G. Powis, Clara R. Rucker, George Micheletti

Publications and Research

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys provide distinct advantages for archaeological prospection in ancient, complex, urban Maya sites, particularly where dense foliage or modern debris may preclude other remote sensing or geophysical techniques. Unidirectional GPR surveys using a 500 MHz shielded antenna were performed at the Middle Preclassic Maya site of Pacbitun, Belize. The survey in 2012 identified numerous linear and circular anomalies between 1 m and 2 m deep. Based on these anomalies, one 1 m × 4 m unit and three smaller units were excavated in 2013. These test units revealed a curved plaster surface not previously found at …

We report a first measurement for ultrahigh energy cosmic rays of the correlation between the depth of shower maximum and the signal in the water Cherenkov stations of air-showers registered simultaneously by the fluorescence and the surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Such a correlation measurement is a unique feature of a hybrid air-shower observatory with sensitivity to both the electromagnetic and muonic components. It allows an accurate determination of the spread of primary masses in the cosmic-ray flux. Up till now, constraints on the spread of primary masses have been dominated by systematic uncertainties. The present correlation measurement …

The Capacity Of Cognitive Control Estimated From A Perceptual Decision Making Task, Tingting Wu, Alexander J. Dufford, Melissa-Ann Mackie, Laura J. Egan, Jin Fan

Publications and Research

Cognitive control refers to the processes that permit selection and prioritization of information processing in different cognitive domains to reach the capacity-limited conscious mind. Although previous studies have suggested that the capacity of cognitive control itself is limited, a direct quantification of this capacity has not been attempted. In this behavioral study, we manipulated the information rate of cognitive control by parametrically varying both the uncertainty of stimul measured as information entropy and the exposure time of the stimuli. We used the relationship between the participants’ response accuracy and the information rate of cognitive control (in bits per second, bps) …

Associated Production Of A Top Pair And A W Boson At Next-To-Next-To-Leading Logarithmic Accuracy, Alessandro Broggio, Andrea Ferroglia, Giovanni Ossola, Ben D. Pecjak

Publications and Research

We consider soft gluon emission corrections to the production of a top-antitop pair in association with a W boson at the Large Hadron Collider. We obtain a soft-gluon resummation formula for this production process which is valid up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We evaluate the soft gluon resummation formula in Mellin space by means of an in-house parton level Monte Carlo code which allows us to obtain predictions for the total cross section as well as for several differential distributions. We study the impact of the soft-gluon resummation corrections in comparison to fixed order calculations.

Oscillation Of Mineral Compositions In Core Sg-1b, Western Qaidam Basin, Ne Tibetan Plateau, Xiaomin Fang, Minghui Li, Zhengrong Wang, Jiuyi Wang, Jiao Li, Xiaoming Liu, Jinbo Zan

Publications and Research

Uplift of the Tibetan Plateau since the Late Miocene has greatly affected the nature of sediments deposited in the Qaidam Basin. However, due to the scarcity of continuously dated sediment records, we know little about how minerals responded to this uplift. In order to understand this response, we here present results from the high-resolution mineral profile from a borehole (7.3–1.6 Ma) in the Basin, which shows systematic oscillations of various evaporite and clay minerals that can be linked to the variation of regional climate and tectonic history. In particular, x-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses show that carbonate minerals consist mainly of …

Turtles From An Arkadelphia Formation—Midway Group Lag Deposit (Maastrichtian—Paleocene), Hot Spring County, Arkansas, Usa, Martin A. Becker, Harry M. Maisch Iv, John A. Chamberlain Jr.

Publications and Research

The Arkadelphia Formation—Midway Group (Maastrichtian—Paleocene) contact near Malvern, Arkansas preserves a K-Pg boundary assemblage of turtle species consisting of skull, shell, and non-shell postcranial skeletal elements. The Malvern turtles are preserved within a coquina lag deposit that comprises the basalmost Midway Group and also contains an abundance of other reptiles, as well as chondrichthyans, osteichthyans, and invertebrates. This coquina lag deposit records a complex taphonomic history of exhumation and reburial of vertebrate skeletal elements along a dynamic ancestral shoreline in southwestern Arkansas during the late Cretaceous-early Paleocene. Based on stratigraphic occurrence, the Malvern turtle assemblage indicates that these marine reptiles …

Publications and Research

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre in diamond is emerging as a promising platform for solid-state quantum information processing and nanoscale metrology. Of interest in these applications is the manipulation of the NV charge, which can be attained by optical excitation. Here, we use two-colour optical microscopy to investigate the dynamics of NV photo-ionization, charge diffusion and trapping in type-1b diamond. We combine fixed-point laser excitation and scanning fluorescence imaging to locally alter the concentration of negatively charged NVs, and to subsequently probe the corresponding redistribution of charge. We uncover the formation of spatial patterns of trapped charge, which we qualitatively reproduce …
