The Geography Of Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Within Urban Areas Of India, Jochen Albrecht, Peter Marcotullio, Andrea Sarzynski Jan 2011

The Geography Of Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Within Urban Areas Of India, Jochen Albrecht, Peter Marcotullio, Andrea Sarzynski

Publications and Research

This paper examines the patterns of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from urban areas in India—a rapidly growing and urbanizing nation. It uses a new dataset, Emission Dataset for Global Atmospheric Research (EDGAR) to estimate the urban share of national GHG emissions. It presents a geographic picture of emission variation by urban form (urban population size, area size, density, and growth rate), and economic (GDP and GDP per capita), geographic (location of emissions released: 20, 40, and 80 km from urban areas), and biophysical (ecosystem and climate: cooling degree days) characteristics. Dependent variables include emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), …

Dissipative Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling In Type-I Superconductors, Ricardo Zarzuela, Eugene M. Chudnovsky, Javier Tejada Jan 2011

Dissipative Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling In Type-I Superconductors, Ricardo Zarzuela, Eugene M. Chudnovsky, Javier Tejada

Publications and Research

We study macroscopic quantum tunneling of interfaces separating normal and superconducting regions in type-I superconductors. Mathematical model is developed, that describes dissipative quantum escape of a two-dimensional manifold from a planar potential well. It corresponds to, e.g., a current-driven quantum depinning of the interface from a grain boundary or from artificially manufactured pinning layer. Effective action is derived and instantons of the equations of motion are investigated. Crossover between thermal activation and quantum tunneling is studied and the crossover temperature is computed. Our results, together with recent observation of non-thermal low-temperature magnetic relaxation in lead, suggest possibility of a controlled …

A Bulk Inflaton From Large-Volume Extra Dimensions, Brian Greene, Daniel N. Kabat, Janna Levin, Dylan Thurston Jan 2011

A Bulk Inflaton From Large-Volume Extra Dimensions, Brian Greene, Daniel N. Kabat, Janna Levin, Dylan Thurston

Publications and Research

The universe may have extra spatial dimensions with large volume that we cannot perceive because the energy required to excite modes in the extra directions is too high. Many examples are known of such manifolds with a large volume and a large mass gap. These compactifications can help explain the weakness of four-dimensional gravity and, as we show here, they also have the capacity to produce reasonable potentials for an inflaton field. Modeling the inflaton as a bulk scalar field, it becomes very weakly coupled in four dimensions, and this enables us to build phenomenologically acceptable inflationary models with tunings …

Ssgss: The Spitzer-Sdss-Galex Spectroscopic Survey, Matthew J. O'Dowd, David Schiminovich, Benjamin D. Johnson, Marie A. Treyer

Publications and Research

The Spitzer-SDSS-GALEX Spectroscopic Survey (SSGSS) provides a new sample of 101 star-forming galaxies at z < 0.2 with unprecedented multi-wavelength coverage. New mid- to far-infrared spectroscopy from the Spitzer Space Telescope is added to a rich suite of previous imaging and spectroscopy, including ROSAT, Galaxy Evolution Explorer, Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Two Micron All Sky Survey, and Spitzer/SWIRE. Sample selection ensures an even coverage of the full range of normal galaxy properties, spanning two orders of magnitude in stellar mass, color, and dust attenuation. In this paper we present the SSGSS data set, describe the science drivers, and detail the sample selection, observations, data reduction, and quality assessment. Also in this paper, we compare the shape of the thermal continuum and the degree of silicate absorption of these typical, star-forming galaxies to those of starburst galaxies. We investigate the link between star formation rate, infrared luminosity, and total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon luminosity, with a view to calibrating the latter for spectral energy distribution models in photometric samples and at high redshift. Last, we take advantage of the 5-40 micron spectroscopic and far-infrared photometric coverage of this sample to perform detailed fitting of the Draine et al. dust models, and investigate the link between dust mass and star formation history and active galactic nucleus properties.

Chronic Pulmonary Cavitary Tuberculosis In Rabbits: A Failed Host Immune Response, Selvakumar Subbian, Liana Tsenova, Guibin Yang, Paul O'Brien, Sven Parsons, Blas Peixoto, Leslie Taylor, Dorothy Fallows, Gilla Kaplan

Publications and Research

The molecular determinants of the immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis HN878 infection in a rabbit model of pulmonary cavitary tuberculosis were studied. Aerosol infection of rabbits resulted in a highly differentially expressed global transcriptome in the lungs at 2 weeks, which dropped at 4 weeks and then gradually increased. While IFNγ was progressively upregulated throughout the infection, several other genes in the IFNγ network were not. T-cell activation network genes were gradually upregulated and maximally induced at 12 weeks. Similarly, the IL4 and B-cell activation networks were progressively upregulated, many reaching high levels between 12 and 16 weeks. Delayed peak …

What Qualitative Research Has Taught Us About Occupational Stress, Joseph J. Mazzola, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Paul E. Spector Jan 2011

What Qualitative Research Has Taught Us About Occupational Stress, Joseph J. Mazzola, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Paul E. Spector

Publications and Research

While many reviews of job stress and the stressor–strain relationship have been conducted, such reviews typically focus exclusively on quantitative data. In the current paper, we review qualitative studies on occupational stress that met two criteria: (1) the studies employed qualitative methods; (2) the stressors, strains and/or coping strategies were grouped into identifiable, higher-order categories. Results indicated that the nature of the stressors experienced varied by (a) occupation, (b) country, (c) seniority and (d) gender. The review further revealed that organizational constraints, work overload and interpersonal conflict were relatively universal stressors. Anger and annoyance were the most frequently reported psychological …

Bias Correction Of Satellite Rainfall Estimation Using A Radar-Gauge Product, Kibrewossen Tesfagiorgis, Shayesteh E. Mahani, Nir Y. Krakauer, Reza Khanbilvardi

Publications and Research

Hourly Satellite Precipitation Estimates (SPEs) may be the only available source of information for operational hydrologic and flash flood prediction due to spatial limitations of radar and gauge products. SPEs are prone to larger systematic errors and more uncertainty sources in comparison with ground based radar and gauge precipitation products. The present work develops an approach to seamlessly blend satellite, radar and gauge products to fill gaps in ground-based data. To mix different rainfall products, the bias of any of the products relative to each other should be removed. The study presents and tests a proposed ensemblebased method which aims …

Six Titans Of The Cambridge School: A Review Article, Harvey Gram Jan 2011

Six Titans Of The Cambridge School: A Review Article, Harvey Gram

Publications and Research

Six volumes in the Great Thinker in Economics Series were chosen by the Editors for this review, which focuses on The Cambridge School of Economics, so very different from the mainstream theory of general economic equilibrium which gives formal expression to Lionel Robbins’ famous definition of the subject as the allocation of scarce means among alternative uses. In recognition of a distinct Cambridge School, the authors of these volumes present a variety of arguments within which three overlapping themes can be discerned: the relationship between ethics and economics; the role of stocks and flows in economic analysis; and the epistemic …

Librarianship Presence In Virtual Worlds, Jenny M. Baum, Kate Lyons Jan 2011

Librarianship Presence In Virtual Worlds, Jenny M. Baum, Kate Lyons

Publications and Research

Librarianship has stereotypically been about books, communities, and the connection between the two. With the emergence of new media and technology, the concept of books has expanded to include information of all types and in multiple formats: eBooks, DVDs, videogames, electronic databases, et cetera. Meanwhile, the idea of community has stayed the same. For example, public libraries primarily serve communities defined by geographic lines; academic libraries serve their campus communities. In non-profit, medical or corporate libraries, communities are defined by their organization’s particular mission. However, now that virtual worlds are becoming mainstream, librarians are redefining community, just as they redefined …

Dea With A Perfect Object: Analytical Solutions, Alexander Vaninsky Jan 2011

Dea With A Perfect Object: Analytical Solutions, Alexander Vaninsky

Publications and Research

For the main DEA models, adding a Perfect Object—that is, a virtual object that has the smallest inputs and greatest outputs—to a collection of actual objects permits obtaining solutions analytically. The paper derives formulas for the solutions and demonstrates that computations with them comprise simple operations with ratios of inputs and outputs while avoiding the use of linear programming (LP) algorithms. A numerical example illustrates the utility of the approach.

Card Check Labor Certification: Lessons From New York, William A. Herbert Jan 2011

Card Check Labor Certification: Lessons From New York, William A. Herbert

Publications and Research

During the debate over the card check proposal in the Employee Free Choice Act of 2009 (EFCA), there has been a notable lack of discussion about New York’s fifty-year history and experience with card check certification. This article challenges and contradicts much of the prior scholarship and debate over EFCA by examining New York’s development and administration of card check procedures. The article begins with an overview of the history of New York public sector labor relations prior to the establishment of collective bargaining rights. As part of that historical overview, it examines the development of informal employee organization representation, …

Some Think Of The Future: Internet, Electronic, And Telephonic Labor Representation Electionslabor Representation Elections, William A. Herbert, Sara Slinn

Publications and Research

Amid the scholarly dialogue regarding amending labor certification procedures, there have been calls for the adoption of internet, electronic and/or telephonic representation voting (IETV) procedures in representation elections. To date, most labor relations agencies in the United States and Canada have not implemented IETV. Three notable exceptions are the National Mediation Board (NMB) and the Federal Labor Relations Authority (FLRA) in the United States, and the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB). This article explores the strengths and weaknesses of IETV and the potential for wider adoption of this technology in the representation election context. The article examines NMB’s rationale in …
