Dendritic Cell Progenitors Phagocytose Particulates, Including Bacillus Calmette-Guerin Organisms, And Sensitize Mice To Mycobacterial Antigens In Vivo, Kayo Inaba, Muneo M. Inaba, Makoto Naito

Dendritic cells, while effective in sensitizing T cells to several different antigens, show little or no phagocytic activity. To the extent that endocytosis is required for antigen processing and presentation, it is not evident how dendritic cells would present particle-associated peptides. Evidence has now been obtained showing that progenitors to dendritic cells can internalize particles, including Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) mycobacteria. The particulates are applied for 20 h to bone marrow cultures that have been stimulated with granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) to induce aggregates of growing dendritic cells. Cells within these aggregates are clearly phagocytic. If the developing cultures are exposed …

A procedure has been developed to isolate dendritic cells to a high degree of purity from fresh blood. Prior enrichment methods have relied upon an initial 1-2-d culture period. Purified fresh isolates lack the characteristic morphology, phenotype, and immunostimulatory function of dendritic cells. The purified cells have the appearance of medium sized lymphocytes and express substantial levels of CD4, but lack the T cell molecules CD3, CDS, and T cell receptor. When placed in culture, the cells mature in a manner resembling the previously described, cytokine-dependent maturation of epidermal dendritic cells (Langerhans cells). The ceils enlarge and exhibit many cell …

Dendritic cells are potent antigen-presenting cells for several primary immune responses and therefore provide an opportunity for evaluating the amounts of cell-associated antigens that are required for inducing T cell-mediated immunity. Because dendritic calls express very high levels of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II products, it has been assumed that high levels of ligands bound to MHC products (“signal one”) are needed to stimulate quiescent T cells. Here we describe quantitative aspects underlying the stimulation of human blood T cells by a bacterial superantigen, staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA). The advantages of superantigens for quantitative studies of signal one are …

We present an improved calculation of the cumulative gamma-ray spectrum of Type Ia supernovae during the history of the universe. We follow Clayton & Ward (1975) in using a few Friedmann models and two simple histories of the average galaxian nucleosynthesis rate, but we improve their calculation by modeling the gamma-ray scattering in detailed numerical models of SN Ia's. The results confirm that near 1 MeV the SN Ia background may dominate, and that it is potentially observable, with high scientific importance. A very accurate measurement of the cosmic background spectrum between 0.1 and 1.0 MeV may reveal the turn-on …

The journal of the Community Develojnnent Society has a responsibility to disseminate information on the theory, research and practice of community development. To fulfill this function the Journal needs to be read by more than subscribers. One way to ensure that the Journal is widely read and cited in research is by having it adequately indexed and abstracted. This issue has been discussed by Society members and members of the Editorial Board. Research on where the journal is indexed was initiated by Phil Favero and completed by editorial staff. Opposite the inside back cover is the list of indexing and …

Aquatic Insects Of Upper Three Runs Creek, Savannah River Plant, South Carolina. Part Iv: Caddisflies (Trichoptera) Of The Lower Reaches, Michael A. Floyd, John C. Morse, J Vaun Mcarthur
Publications
Ninety-three species of caddisflies, representing 14 families, were identified from collections obtained from two localities on Upper Three Runs Creek, Savannah River Site, Aiken County, South Carolina. Collections of adult caddisflies were made biweekly over a 1-yr period with ultraviolet light traps. The similarity index, Jaccard's Coefficient of Communities, showed that the two sites were over 78% similar with 73 species in common. Three species, Oxyethira setosa Denning, Triaenodes smithi Ross, and Nyctiophylax serratus Lago & Harris, are new distributional records for South Carolina. Two species of Triaenodes are new to science. Other species, which were considered to be endemic …

Several prior reports have identified peptides that are naturally associated with major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules on presenting cells. We have examined the delivery of a peptide from exogenous sources to MHC class II molecules. The peptide derives from the influenza virus hemagglutinin (HA) and activates a CD4+ T cell hybridoma. In functional assays of antigen presentation, this epitope is delivered effectively to T cells either in the context of influenza virus or chimeric immunoglobulin (Ig) molecules (Ig-HA) in which the peptide has replaced the CDR3 loop of the heavy chain. We find that the identical 11-mer …

The readers of the Journal of the Community Development Society have a wide variety of interests. This is not surprising since the members of the Community Development Society come from many disciplines and have different interests in community development. Some are practitioners, others are educators, and many are researchers. Often, they have all three functions in community development. The editors should attempt to meet the needs of all the members of the Society and the readers of the Journal.

Advocacy And Scholarship, Paul F. Campos
Advocacy And Scholarship, Paul F. Campos

The apex of American legal thought is embodied in two types of writings: the federal appellate opinion and the law review article. In this Article, the author criticizes the whole enterprise of doctrinal constitutional law scholarship, using a recent U.S. Supreme Court case and a Harvard Law Review article as quintessential examples of the dominant genre. In a rhetorical tour de force, the author argues that most of modern constitutional scholarship is really advocacy in the guise of scholarship. Such an approach to legal scholarship may have some merit as a strategic move towards a political end; however, it has …

We discuss several astrophysical consequences of the detection by OSSE (Kurfess et al. 1992) of 57Co gamma radiation from supernova 1987A. Models with low photoelectric absorption cannot account for both OSSE data and the bolometric luminosity. By burying the alpha-rich-freezeout portion at deeper gamma depths than in published models, we show that it remains barely possible that the bolometric luminosity during days 1200-1800 could derive from 57Co power without requiring 57/56 production ratios greater than twice solar. We illustrate this by slowing the expansion within the inner four solar masses of ejecta in model 10HMM.

Galactic Structure From Faint Stromgren Photometry: The Catalog Of Observations, Ted A. Von Hippel
Publications
We have initiated the faint photometric survey in the Stromgren system covering about 1 square degree and including 1238 objects in order to develop samples which best probe the thick disk population. The catalog of observations are presented here. They were acquired without kinematic or metallicity biases and are complete to V=17.3-18.5, depending on the field, for 810 early to relatively late type stars. Photometric metallicities were derived for 508 stars and indicate a metal-poor stellar population, consistent with a mixture of thick disk and halo stars. While the Stromgren u-band was not part of the survey, follow-up u-band observations …

Seasonal And Latitudinal Variations Of Gravity Wave-Driven Fluctuations In Oh Nightglow, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D., R. L. Walterscheid, G. Schubert
Publications
The seasonal and latitudinal variations of the gravity wave-driven fluctuations in the OH nightglow are investigated theoretically using a model that accounts for emission from an extended OH layer and includes the effects of eddy diffusivities in the gravity wave dynamics. The mean (unperturbed) state is obtained from a two-dimensional, nighttime model so that mean-state number densities, temperatures and eddy diffusivities are all self-consistent. Seasonal and latitudinal variations in the background OH nightglow emission and in the propagation and dissipation characteristics of the gravity waves influence how the OH nightglow modulations due to gravity waves depend on season and latitude. …

The Co-57 Abundance In Sn 1987a, Mark D. Leising, Donald D. Clayton, Lih-Sin The, W N. Johnson, J D. Kurfess
Publications
Astrophysical implications of the detection by OSSE of Co-57 gamma radiation from SN 1987A are discussed. By burying the alpha-rich-freezeout portion at deeper gamma depths than in published models, it is shown that it remains barely possible that the bolometric luminosity during days 1200-1800 could derive from Co-57 power without requiring 57/56 production ratios greater than twice solar. Alternative mechanisms which may contribute to the bolometric power at late times are proposed.

The Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment on the Arthur Holly Compton Gamma Ray Observatory satellite uses four actively shielded NaI (Tl)-CsI(Na) phoswich detectors to provide gamma-ray line and continuum detection capability in the 0.05-10 MeV energy range. The instrument includes secondary capabilities for gamma-ray and neutron detection between 10 and 250 MeV. The detectors have 3.8 deg x 11.04 deg (FWHM) fields of view defined by tungsten collimators. Each detector has an independent, single-axis orientation system which permits offset pointing from the spacecraft Z-axis for background measurements and multitarget observations. The instrument, and its calibration and performance, are described.
