Keck Hires Spectroscopy Of M92 Subgiants: Surprising Abundances Near The Turnoff, Jeremy R. King, Alex Stephens, Ann Merchant Boesgaard, Constantine P. Deliyannis Feb 1998

Keck Hires Spectroscopy Of M92 Subgiants: Surprising Abundances Near The Turnoff, Jeremy R. King, Alex Stephens, Ann Merchant Boesgaard, Constantine P. Deliyannis

Publications

Using high-resolution, moderate signal-to-noise ratio spectroscopy obtained with the 10 m Keck I Telescope and efficient HIRES echelle spectrograph, we derive abundances of several elements in subgiants near the M92 turnoff. As a consistency check, we also analyze the metal-poor field star HD 140283 and find an Fe abundance in fine agreement with many previous determinations. However, our M92 value ([Fe/H] = -2.52) is a factor of 2 lower than the abundance derived from its red giant members. Differences in model atmospheres, gf-values, and instrumental effects might account for this difference, but whether they in fact do so is unclear. …

Permutation Of Two-Term Local Quadrat Variance Analysis: General Concepts For Interpretation Of Peaks, Jonathan E. Campbell, Scott B. Franklin, David J. Gibson, Jonathan A. Newman Feb 1998

Permutation Of Two-Term Local Quadrat Variance Analysis: General Concepts For Interpretation Of Peaks, Jonathan E. Campbell, Scott B. Franklin, David J. Gibson, Jonathan A. Newman

Publications

Many ecological studies use Two-Term Local Quadrat Variance Analysis (TTLQV) and its derivatives for spatial pattern analysis. Currently, rules for determining variance peak significance are arbitrary. Variance peaks found at block size 1 and at > 50 % of the transect length are the only peaks whose use is explicitly prohibited. Although the use of variance peaks found at block sizes > 10 % of the transect length have also been warned against, many researchers interpret them regardless. We show in this paper that variance peaks derived from TTLQV are subject to additional ‘rules of thumb’. Through the use of randomization and …

Primordial Lithium: Keck Observations In M92 Turnoff Stars, Ann Merchant Boesgaard, Constantine Deliyannis, Alex Stephens, Jeremy R. King

Publications

We present new Keck I/HIRES observations at R\45,000 (\3 pixels) of seven stars near the turno† of the old, metal-poor globular cluster M92. In three of these stars, we have signal-to-noise ratios (S/Ns) of 40 pixel~1, and in the other four, the S/N is near 20. The Li abundance in star 18 is high compared with the halo Ðeld-star plateau and is similar to that in the remarkable Li-rich halo Ðeld star BD ]23¡3912. In addition to the high Li abundance in star 18, there is a dispersion in Li abundance in our seven stars covering the full range of …

We report on the results of R-band observations of the error box of the g-ray burst of 1997 August 28 made between 4 hr and 8 days after this burst occurred. No counterpart was found varying by more than 0.2 mag down to R 5 23.8. We discuss the consequences of this nondetection for relativistic blast wave models of g-ray bursts and the possible effect of redshift on the relation between optical absorption and the low-energy cutoff in the X-ray afterglow spectrum.

Neutralizing Monoclonal Antibodies Block Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Infection Of Dendritic Cells And Transmission To T Cells, Sarah Frankel, Ralph M. Steinman, Nelson L. Michael Jan 1998

Neutralizing Monoclonal Antibodies Block Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Infection Of Dendritic Cells And Transmission To T Cells, Sarah Frankel, Ralph M. Steinman, Nelson L. Michael

Publications

Prevention of the initial infection of mucosal dendritic cells (DC) and interruption of the subsequent transmission of HIV-1 from DC to T cells are likely to be important attributes of an effective human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) vaccine. While anti-HIV-1 neutralizing antibodies have been difficult to elicit by immunization, there are several human monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) that effectively neutralize virus infection of activated T cells. We investigated the ability of three well-characterized neutralizing MAbs (IgG1b12, 2F5, and 2G12) to block HIV-1 infection of human DC. DC were generated from CD14+ blood cells or obtained from cadaveric human skin. …

The Traf Family Of Signal Transducers Mediates Nf-Κb Activation By The Trance Receptor, Brian R. Wong, Régis Josien, Soo-Young Lee Jan 1998

The Traf Family Of Signal Transducers Mediates Nf-Κb Activation By The Trance Receptor, Brian R. Wong, Régis Josien, Soo-Young Lee

Publications

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-related activation-induced cytokine (TRANCE), a member of the TNF family expressed on activated T-cells, bone marrow stromal cells, and osteoblasts, regulates the function of dendritic cells (DC) and osteoclasts. The TRANCE receptor (TRANCE-R), recently identified as receptor activator of NF-κβ (RANK), activates NF-κB, a transcription factor critical in the differentiation and activation of those cells. In this report we identify the TNF receptor-associated factor (TRAF) family of signal transducers as important components of TRANCE-R-mediated NF- κB activation. Coimmunoprecipitation experiments suggested potential interactions between the cytoplasmic tail of TRANCE-R with TRAF1, TRAF2, TRAF3, TRAF5, and TRAF6. Dominant negative …

The Locations Of Gamma-Ray Bursts Measured By Comptel, Dieter H. Hartmann, R. Marc Kippen, James M. Ryan, Alanna Connors, Christoph Winkler, Lucien Kuiper, Martin Varendorff, Mark L. Mcconnell, Kevin Hurley, Wim Hermsen

Publications

The COMPTEL instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory is used to measure the locations of gamma-ray bursts through direct imaging of MeV photons. In a comprehensive search, we have detected and localized 29 bursts observed between 1991 April 19 and 1995 May 31. The average location accuracy of these events is 1.25◦ (1σ), including a systematic error of ∼0.5◦, which is verified through comparison with Interplanetary Network (IPN) timing annuli. The combination of COMPTEL and IPN measurements results in locations for 26 of the bursts with an average “error box” area of only ∼0.3 deg2 (1σ). We find that …

Immature Dendritic Cells Selectively Replicate Macrophagetropic (M- Tropic) Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1, While Mature Cells Efficiently Transmit Both M- And T-Tropic Virus To T Cells, Angela Granelli-Piperno, Elena Delgado, Victoria Finkel

Publications

Dendritic cells (DCs) can develop from CD14+ peripheral blood monocytes cultured in granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and interleukin 4 (IL-4). By 6 days in culture, the cells have the characteristics of immature DCs and can be further induced to mature by inflammatory stimuli or by monocyte-conditioned medium. After infection with macrophagetropic (M-tropic) human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), monocytes and mature DCs show a block in reverse transcription and only form early transcripts that can be amplified with primers for the R/U5 region. In contrast, immature DCs cultured for 6 or 11 days in GM-CSF and IL-4 complete reverse …

The Unenlarged Lymph Nodes Of Hiv-1-Infected, Asymptomatic Patients With High Cd4 T Cell Counts Are Sites For Virus Replication And Cd4 T Cell Proliferation. The Impact Of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy, Klara Tenner-Racz, Hans Jürgen Stellbrink, Jan Van Lunzen

Publications

The efficacy of triple drug therapy for HIV-1 infection encourages its early use to prevent damage to the immune system. We monitored the effects of such therapy on 12 patients with 14-75-mo histories of minimal disease, i.e., CD4+ counts constantly >500/μl and little or no lymph node enlargement. In this way, we could first determine the extent of viral replication and immunoarchitectural changes in unenlarged nodes early in disease, and second follow the response to triple therapy in plasma and lymphoid tissue in tandem. As is known for lymph nodes with more advanced disease, the germinal centers showed productively …

Women And The Promise Of Equal Citizenship, Jennifer S. Hendricks Jan 1998

Women And The Promise Of Equal Citizenship, Jennifer S. Hendricks

Publications

Anticipating the decision in United States v. Morrison (2000), holding that the civil rights remedy of the Violence Against Women Act was not a legitimate exercise of Congress's power to enforce the Equal Protection Clause, this article argues that the Act could be upheld as an exercise of Congress's authority under the Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. Congress's authority under the Citizenship Clause is analogous to its authority under the "badges and incidents" doctrine of the Thirteenth Amendment, which allows Congress to provide protection from discriminatory violence. This theory would also guide interpretation of the act to focus on …

Deconstructing The Distinction Between Bias And Merit, Daria Roithmayr Jan 1998

Deconstructing The Distinction Between Bias And Merit, Daria Roithmayr

Publications

In this article Professor Roithmayr attempts to develop in the context of law school admissions a theoretical argument from deconstruction to support the radical critique of merit. The radical critique, espoused primarily by Critical Race Theorists and radical feminists, argues that merit standards disproportionately exclude white women and people of color because merit standards were developed by dominant social groups, in ways that have disproportionately benefited their descendants. Using a critical history of law school admission standards, as well as a deconstructive reading of a defense of merit offered by Professors Daniel Farber and Suzanna Sherry, Professor Roithmayr deconstructs the …

Notice And Notification Under The Revised Uniform Partnership Act: Some Suggested Changes, J. Dennis Hynes Jan 1998

Notice And Notification Under The Revised Uniform Partnership Act: Some Suggested Changes, J. Dennis Hynes

Publications

This Article addresses the decision by the drafters of the revised Uniform Partnership Act (1996) (RUPA) to reduce the traditional defenses available to partnerships in apparent authority cases. RUPA eliminated the requirement that apparent authority claims against a partnership be based on the claimant's reasonable expectations. Under RUPA a partnership is liable for a partner's unauthorized act even when the claimant had reason to know the act was unauthorized. A defense based on the claimant's knowledge is effective only when the claimant actually knows--is cognitively aware--that the act was unauthorized. This Article argues that this places an unfair burden on …

Publications

Observations of the extreme ultraviolet emission of helium ions at 30.4 nm can be used to study the global shape of the plasmasphere and its dynamical response to geomagnetic forcing. In order to retrieve number densities of plasmaspheric He+ from such observations, we have developed a new inversion technique based on discrete inverse theory, which uses the optical data to optimize a parameterized model of the He+ distribution. We apply this inversion technique to several orbits of data obtained from the Naval Research Laboratory extreme ultraviolet photometric experiment launched on the STP 72-1 satellite in October 1972. The inversion is …

Beryllium In Lithium-Deficient F And G Stars, Alex Stephens, Ann Merchant Boesgaard, Jeremy R. King, Constantine P. Deliyannis

Publications

We present the results of an extensive search, conducted at the Canada-France-Hawaii 3.6-m tele-scope, for beryllium (Be) in the atmospheres of lithium-deÐcient F and G dwarfs. We also report revised lithium (Li) estimates for the entire sample using previously published equivalent widths and updated, consistently calculated stellar parameters. Abundances derived from an LTE analysis of the Li and Be line-forming regions conÐrm the suspicion that F stars which deplete Li by factors of 10È200 may also be beryllium deÐcient. Photospheric Be concentrations range from near meteoritic levels in G dwarfs to factors of 10È100 below this assumed initial abundance in …

A Statistical Treatment Of The Gamma-Ray Burst "No Host Galaxy" Issue, Dieter H. Hartmann, David L. Band Nov 1997

A Statistical Treatment Of The Gamma-Ray Burst "No Host Galaxy" Issue, Dieter H. Hartmann, David L. Band

Publications

Various burst origin scenarios require a host object in the burst error box or near a well-located position. For example, a host galaxy should be present in the standard cosmological models. We present a methodology which evaluates whether the observed detections and nondetections of potential host objects in burst error boxes are consistent with the presence of the host, or whether all the detections can be attributed to background objects (e.g., unrelated background galaxies). The host object’s flux distribution must be modeled. Preliminary results are presented for the “minimal” cosmological model.
