Teaching And Learning Reform: Curriculum, The Kentucky Department Of Education, & The Educational Professional Standards Board, Jane Clark Lindle Jan 2001

Teaching And Learning Reform: Curriculum, The Kentucky Department Of Education, & The Educational Professional Standards Board, Jane Clark Lindle

Publications

For explanatory purposes, the 1990 Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA) is generally divided into three major clusters of initiatives: finance, curriculum, and governance. As explained elsewhere in this volume, the systemic complexity of KERA makes any divisions of its initiatives, artificial, and ultimately, insufficient, in describing the decade-old scope of Kentucky’s radical education reforms (Rinehart & Lindle, 1997; Steffy, 1993). For the purposes of this retrospective review of research, this chapter was designed to focus on the very heart of KERA’s purpose, the improvement of teaching and learning. For that reason, this chapter addresses a teaching-learning-oriented KERA initiative, curriculum, and …

Genetic Disease, Genetic Testing And The Clinician, Kelly C. Smith Jan 2001

Genetic Disease, Genetic Testing And The Clinician, Kelly C. Smith

Publications

Modern medicine emphasizes treatment of the sick. It is often said that the widespread genetic testing soon to follow the completion of the Human Genome Project will usher in a new era of preventive medicine. Such changes require new ways of thinking, however. For example, there may be nothing clinically wrong with a healthy patient who requests genetic testing, even if the tests reveal disease genes. Since all individuals have genetic skeletons in their closets, it is important to be careful not to confuse having disease genes with having the diseases that they cause. Unfortunately, many in the public have …

Publications

Broad-band optical observations of the extraordinarily bright optical afterglow of the intense gamma-ray burst GRB 991208 started ∼2.1 days after the event and continued until 4 Apr. 2000. The flux decay constant of the optical afterglow in the R-band is −2.30 ±0.07 up to ∼5 days, which is very likely due to the jet effect, and it is followed by a much steeper decay with constant −3.2 ±0.2, the fastest one ever seen in a GRB optical afterglow. A negative detection in several all-sky films taken simultaneously with the event, that otherwise would have reached naked eye brightness, implies either …

Comparing Two Methods To Determine Nest Location Of Golden Mice (Ochrotomys Nuttalli), Anita T. Morzillo, George A. Feldhamer

Publications

Fluorescent powder tracking was compared with radiotelemetry to locate nests used by golden mice (Ochrotomys nuttalli), a semi-arboreal species. Fluorescent powder was not a successful method for determining nest location or movement patterns for golden mice. Many golden mice immediately climbed trees, whereas white-footed mice remained on the ground. Weather conditions can negatively affect the success of powder tracking. Although radiotelemetry successfully determined the locations of occupied nests, precise estimates of movements within a microhabitat could not be made.

An Empirical Investigation Of Four Tests For Interaction In The Context Of Factorial Analysis Of Covariance, Todd C. Headrick, George Vineyard Jan 2001

An Empirical Investigation Of Four Tests For Interaction In The Context Of Factorial Analysis Of Covariance, Todd C. Headrick, George Vineyard

Publications

The Type I error and power properties of the parametric F test and three nonparametric competitors were compared in terms of a 3x 4 factorial analysis of covariance layout. The focus of the study was on the test for interaction either in the presence and/or absence of main effects. A variety of conditional distributions, sample sizes, levels of variate and covariate correlation and treatment effect sizes were investigated. The Puri and Sen (1969a) test had ultra-conservative Type I error rates and power losses when main effect(s) were present. The adjusted rank transform (Blair & Sawilowsky,1990; Salter & Fawcett; 1993) had …

Direct Measures: An Alternative Form Of Affirmative Action, Daria Roithmayr Jan 2001

Direct Measures: An Alternative Form Of Affirmative Action, Daria Roithmayr

Publications

In this essay, I will propose an alternative form of law school affirmative action that does not rely on racial classifications, but nevertheless helps to remedy racial discrimination, to diversify the educational environment and to provide resources for underserved communities. In particular, I propose a "direct measures" program that would grant admissions preferences on the basis of the following criteria: (1) whether an applicant has suffered from the effects of racial discrimination; (2) whether, on issues of racial and social justice, the applicant can contribute a perspective or viewpoint not currently represented within the majority of the student population, and …

The Wharf (Holdings) Ltd. V. United International Holdings, Inc.: The Supreme Court Breaks Old Ground, Mark J. Loewenstein

Publications

This article analyzes the Supreme Court's decision to decide only one federal securities law case, The Wharf (Holdings) Ltd. v. United International Holdings, Inc. On the face of it, the Court simply affirmed long-standing, uncontroversial tenets of Rule 10b-5. However, the article provides different explanations to the Court's decision.

White Dwarfs In Common Proper Motion Binary Systems: Mass Distribution And Kinematics, Nicole M. Silvestri, Terry D. Oswalt, Matt A. Wood, J. Allyn Smith, I. Neill Reid, Edward M. Sion Jan 2001

White Dwarfs In Common Proper Motion Binary Systems: Mass Distribution And Kinematics, Nicole M. Silvestri, Terry D. Oswalt, Matt A. Wood, J. Allyn Smith, I. Neill Reid, Edward M. Sion

Publications

We present the mass distribution, gravitational redshifts, radial velocities, and space motions of white dwarf stars in common proper motion binary systems. The mass distribution we derive for the 41 DA white dwarfs in this study has a mean of 0.68 ± 0.04 MꙨ. This distribution has a slightly higher mean and larger dispersion than most previous white dwarf studies. We hypothesize that this is due to a higher fraction of cool (average Teff ̴ 10,000 K), hence old, white dwarfs in our sample. Our results indicate that samples made up of predominantly cool, old white dwarf stars …

Securities Price Risks And Financial Derivative Markets, Peter H. Huang Jan 2001

Securities Price Risks And Financial Derivative Markets, Peter H. Huang

Publications

The financial and popular media report almost daily on the volatility of securities market prices. Yet, many people continue to buy securities to hedge against or speculate on certain risks. People can also buy or sell derivatives to hedge against or speculate on fluctuations in securities prices. This Article discusses three regulatory policy implications of utilizing derivatives markets to reallocate the bearing of securities price risks. First, if there are too few non-redundant derivative markets, a competitive market equilibrium allocation of securities price risks is typically constrained Pareto inefficient. This financial economic result means that for typical economies, a regulator …

Special Educators As Coaches To Support Paraprofessional Implementation Of Functional Communication Training, Virginia L. Walker, Megan E. Carpenter, Amy Clausen, Katherine Ealer, Kristin J. Lyon

Publications

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of special educators’ delivery of training that included an initial training session and follow-up coaching on paraprofessional implementation of an evidence-based practice for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Three special educators each trained a paraprofessional in their classroom to implement functional communication training (FCT) to address the challenging behavior of a student with ASD. The training procedures incorporated the following aspects of behavioral skills training: instruction, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback. Training from special educators resulted in high levels of paraprofessional FCT implementation that maintained over time for two paraprofessionals. …

Human Error And Accident Causation Theories, Frameworks And Analytical Techniques: An Annotated Bibliography, Douglas A. Wiegmann, Aaron M. Rich, Scott A. Shappell Sep 2000

Human Error And Accident Causation Theories, Frameworks And Analytical Techniques: An Annotated Bibliography, Douglas A. Wiegmann, Aaron M. Rich, Scott A. Shappell

Publications

Over the last several decades, humans have played a progressively more important causal role in aviation accidents as aircraft have become more [complex]. Consequently, a growing number of aviation organizations are tasking their safety personnel with developing safety programs to address the highly complex and often nebulous issue of human error. However, there is generally no “off-the-shelf” or standard approach for addressing human error in aviation. Indeed, recent years have seen a proliferation of human error frameworks and accident investigation schemes to the point where there now appears to be as many human error models as there are people interested …

The White Dwarf Cooling Age Of The Open Cluster Ngc 2420, Ted Von Hippel, Gerard Gilmore Sep 2000

The White Dwarf Cooling Age Of The Open Cluster Ngc 2420, Ted Von Hippel, Gerard Gilmore

Publications

We have used deep HST WFPC2 observations of two fields in NGC 2420 to produce a cluster color-magnitude diagram down to V ≈ 27. After imposing morphological selection criteria we find eight candidate white dwarfs in NGC 2420. Our completeness estimates indicate that we have found the terminus of the WD cooling sequence. We argue that the cluster distance modulus is likely to be close to 12.10 with E(B-V) = 0.04. With these parameters we find a white dwarf cooling age for NGC 2420 of 2.0 ± 0.20 (1 σ) Gyr. The 0.20 Gyr uncertainty includes errors in the photometry, …

Galactic [O/Fe] And [C/Fe] Ratios: The Influence Of New Stellar Parameters, Jeremy R. King Aug 2000

Galactic [O/Fe] And [C/Fe] Ratios: The Influence Of New Stellar Parameters, Jeremy R. King

Publications

We consider the effects of recent NLTE gravities and Fe abundances on stellar [O/Fe] and [C/Fe] ratios. The NLTE parameters greatly reduce or eliminate the well-known discrepancy between CH- and C I–based C abundances in metal-poor stars and previously seen trends of atomic-based [C/Fe] and [O/Fe] with Teff. With the NLTE parameters, the metal-poor molecular-based [C/Fe] ratio maintains its increase with declining [Fe/H]; this may also be demonstrated by the revised atomic-based ratios. [O/Fe] values derived from OH and O I features are considerably reduced and typically show improved agreement but are 0.1–0.2 dex larger than those exhibited by the …

Evaluating How Local- And Regional-Scale Processes Interact To Regulate Growth Of Age-0 Largemouth Bass, James E. Garvey, Russell A. Wright, Roy A. Stein, Kristen H. Ferry Jul 2000

Evaluating How Local- And Regional-Scale Processes Interact To Regulate Growth Of Age-0 Largemouth Bass, James E. Garvey, Russell A. Wright, Roy A. Stein, Kristen H. Ferry

Publications

Regional- and local-scale processes may interact to influence early growth and survival, thereby governing cohort strength. During summer through fall 1994–1996, we assessed how precipitation (a regional-scale process) and prey availability (a local-scale process) influenced piscivory and growth of age-0 largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides in five Ohio reservoirs (190–1,145 ha). We expected early growth to vary with the abundance and relative sizes of age- 0 gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum. We collected age-0 largemouth bass and prey fishes every 3 weeks in each reservoir. In 1994, May precipitation was low (total = 4 cm), resulting in low mean daily reservoir …

Inactivation Of Lmpa, Encoding A Limpii-Related Endosomal Protein, Suppresses The Internalization And Endosomal Trafficking Defects In Profilin-Null Mutants, Lesly A. Temesvari, Linyi Zhang, Brent Fodera, Klaus-Peter Janssen, Michael Schleicher, James A. Caradelli

Publications

Profilin is a key phosphoinositide and actin-binding protein connecting and coordinating changes in signal transduction pathways with alterations in the actin cytoskeleton. Using biochemical assays and microscopic approaches, we demonstrate that profilin-null cells are defective in macropinocytosis, fluid phase efflux, and secretion of lysosomal enzymes but are unexpectedly more efficient in phagocytosis than wild-type cells. Disruption of the lmpA gene encoding a protein (DdLIMP) belonging to the CD36/LIMPII family suppressed, to different degrees, most of the profilin-minus defects, including the increase in F-actin, but did not rescue the secretion defect. Immunofluorescence microscopy indicated that DdLIMP, which is also capable of …

Acute Responses To Salinity For Sunshine Bass And Palmetto Bass, Joseph J. Myers, Christopher C. Kohler May 2000

Acute Responses To Salinity For Sunshine Bass And Palmetto Bass, Joseph J. Myers, Christopher C. Kohler

Publications

Differences in salinity tolerance and osmoregulatory performance between sunshine bass (white bass Morone chrysops ♀ × striped bass M. saxatilis ♂) and palmetto bass (striped bass ♀ × white bass ♂) were evaluated by using direct-transfer toxicity testing and monitoring of plasma osmolality during salinity elevation. The 24-h LC50 (concentration lethal for 50% of test animals) for sunshine bass was a salinity of 27.9‰ with a 95% lower and upper confidence interval (CI) of 24.5‰ to 36.2‰. The 24-h LC50 for palmetto bass was 28.0‰ with a 95% CI of 26.2‰ to 30.8‰. Test temperatures during this interval ranged from …

The Atomic And Magnetic Structure Of Ndmn(6−X)Fexge6 Solid Solutions, J. Han, G. K. Marasinghe, W. J. James, M. Chen, W. B. Yelon, I. Dubenko, N. Ali May 2000

The Atomic And Magnetic Structure Of Ndmn(6−X)Fexge6 Solid Solutions, J. Han, G. K. Marasinghe, W. J. James, M. Chen, W. B. Yelon, I. Dubenko, N. Ali

Publications

The magnetic and crystallographic properties of induction-melted NdMn(6−x)FexGe6 intermetallics (x=0, 1.0, and 1.5) in the temperature range of 30–475 K have been studied by x-ray and neutron diffraction techniques and SQUID measurements. All of the samples crystallized in the YCo6Ge6-type structure (P6/mmm). A small amount (<5 mol%) of Nd(MnFe)2Ge2 is present as an impurity. As expected, iron replaces manganese at the 3g site. The unit cell volume decreases slightly with increasing iron content at an average rate of 1.3% per substituted atom. Lattice parameters …

Crystal And Magnetic Structures Of Lani5−Xmnx, C. Y. Tai, G. K. Marasinghe, O. A. Pringle, W. J. James, M. Chen, W. B. Yelon, I. Dubenko, N. Ali, Ph. I’Héritier

Publications

The crystallographic and magnetic properties of LaNi5−xMnx with x=1, 1.5, and 2, have been investigated using x-ray and neutron diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer and superconducting quantum interference device measurements. All the samples crystallize in the hexagonal CaCu5-type (P6/mmm) structure. Manganese atoms preferentially occupy the 3g site in the LaNi5 structure. The bulk magnetization of the LaNi5−xMnx powder samples decreases rapidly as nickel is replaced by manganese. A ferrimagnetic model is applied to describe the magnetic structure of the LaNi5−xMnx samples for …

An Elliptic Equation With Spike Solutions Concentrating At Local Minima Of The Laplacian Of The Potential, Gregory S. Spradlin May 2000

An Elliptic Equation With Spike Solutions Concentrating At Local Minima Of The Laplacian Of The Potential, Gregory S. Spradlin

Publications

We consider the equation −ԑ2∆u + V (z)u = f(u) which arises in the study of nonlinear Schrödinger equations. We seek solutions that are positive on RN and that vanish at infinity. Under the assumption that f satisfies super-linear and sub-critical growth conditions, we show that for small ԑ there exist solutions that concentrate near local minima of V. The local minima may occur in unbounded components, as long as the Laplacian of V achieves a strict local minimum along such a component. Our proofs employ vibrational mountain-pass and concentration compactness arguments. A penalization technique developed by Felmer and del …

Spectroscopic Abundances In Cool Pleiades Dwarfs And Ngc 2264 Stars, Jeremy R. King, David R. Soderblom, Debra Fischer, Burton F. Jones

Publications

We derive parameters and abundances of several elements in two cool Pleiades dwarfs, four cool NGC 2264 pre-main-sequence stars, and a probable NGC 2264 nonmember from high-resolution, moderate signal-to-noise ratio, Keck/HIRES spectra. Our Pleiades Fe abundance agrees with previous spectroscopic and photometric values of hotter stars and does not resolve the 0.3 mag distance modulus discrepancy between main-sequence fitting and Hipparcos parallaxes. Abundances of Cr-Ca-Ti-Al are subsolar, mimicking the pattern of interstellar medium abundances. While modest temperature errors may contribute, the results (particularly for Al) could suggest an association with ionization potential; such effects might be related to the Pleiades …
