Integrating The Study Of Technology Into The Curriculum: A Consulting Teacher Model, Thomas Erekson, Steven Shumway
Integrating The Study Of Technology Into The Curriculum: A Consulting Teacher Model, Thomas Erekson, Steven Shumway
Publications
Over the past 40 years there have been several initiatives by leaders in the profession to make revolutionary changes in philosophy, curriculum, methods, and facilities in the transition from industrial arts to technology education. The transition to technology education has been grounded in the dramatic changes that technology and technological innovations have brought to all aspects of society. It has been postulated that to fully participate in a technologically-based society, people must be technologically literate (Pearson & Young, 2002). Thus, the need arose to assure that all students have experience in technology education in order to acquire technological literacy.

Review Of The Book - Teaching About Technology: An Introduction To The Philosophy Of Technology For Non-Philosophers, Vincent Childress
Publications
Marc de Vries' latest book, Teaching about Technology: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Technology for Non-Philosophers, was interesting to the reviewer because it provided a link between philosophies of technology and the nature of the technology curriculum more than any other philosophy-related work he has read. The book is intended for use with pre-service teachers, graduate students, and others who are interested in teaching technology. Teaching about Technology is part of a series of books on science and technology that is edited by William Cobern of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The editorial board for the series is …

Aquatic Turning Performance Of Painted Turtles (Chrysemys Picta) And Functional Consequences Of A Rigid Body Design, Gabriel Rivera, Angela R.V. Rivera, Erin E. Dougherty, Richard W. Blob
Publications
The ability to capture prey and avoid predation in aquatic habitats depends strongly on the ability to perform unsteady maneuvers (e.g. turns), which itself depends strongly on body flexibility. Two previous studies of turning performance in rigid-bodied taxa have found either high maneuverability or high agility, but not both. However, examinations of aquatic turning performance in rigid-bodied animals have had limited taxonomic scope and, as such, the effects of many body shapes and designs on aquatic maneuverability and agility have yet to be examined. Turtles represent the oldest extant lineage of rigid-bodied vertebrates and the only aquatic rigid-bodied tetrapods. We …

Structural Response Of Caribbean Dry Forests To Hurricane Winds: A Case Study From Guanica Forest, Puerto Rico, Skip Van Bloem, Ariel E. Lugo, Peter G. Murphy
Structural Response Of Caribbean Dry Forests To Hurricane Winds: A Case Study From Guanica Forest, Puerto Rico, Skip Van Bloem, Ariel E. Lugo, Peter G. Murphy
Publications
Tropical dry forests in the Caribbean have an uniquely short, shrubby structure with a high proportion of multiple-stemmed trees compared to dry forests elsewhere in the Neotropics. Previous studies have shown that this structure can arise without the loss of main stems from cutting, grazing, or other human intervention. The Caribbean has a high frequency of hurricanes, so wind may also influence forest stature. Furthermore, these forests also tend to grow on soils with low amounts of available phosphorus, which may also influence structure. The objective of this study was to assess the role of high winds in structuring dry …

When The Zone Of Proximal Development Becomes A Virtual Zone: An Examination Of Scaffolded Instruction In An Online Literacy Course, C. C. Bates, Tiffany Coleman, Joyce E. Many
Publications
This qualitative inquiry described the scaffolding provided by the instructor and class participants in an online graduate literacy course. Participants included the instructor and 16 students. Data were 588 bulletin board messages which were analyzed using the constant-comparative method. Analysis revealed five areas in which scaffolding occurred (a) technology, (b) assignments, (c) online processes, (d) literacy concepts, and (e) educational concepts. Through on-line conversations in this course, a community was established allowing the instructor and participants to provide support by scaffolding instruction at the point of need.

Subjects for which aesthetics and creative performance are critical curricular dimensions (such as art, physical education, music, and technology education), and which are accommodative of students across the range of intelligences (Gardner, 1999) are not readily or completely captured by content standards. Therefore content knowledge in these fields that target student achievement as conventionally conceived must be complemented by treatment of more subjective and elusive goals such as the development of connoisseurship, appreciation, or creative insight. With the publication of standards for the subject (International Technology Education Association, 2000), the need for focus upon creativity in technology education has been …

New Perspectives: Technology Teacher Education And Engineering Design, Roger B. Hill
Publications
Initiatives to integrate engineering design within the field of technology education are increasingly evident (Lewis, 2005; Wicklein, 2006). Alliances between technology education and engineering were prominent in the development of the Standards for Technological Literacy (International Technology Education Association, 2000), and leaders from both disciplines have expressed support for the outcomes described in the Standards (Bybee, 2000; Council of the National Academy of Engineering, 2000; Dugger, Meade, Delany, and Nichols, 2003; Gorham, Newberry, and Bickart, 2003). The National Science Foundation (NSF) has also encouraged and funded opportunities for technology educators and engineers to work collaboratively. The Bridges for Engineering Education …

Oxygen abundances have been derived from the near-IR, high-excitation O i k7774 triplet in high-resolution, high signal-to-noiseratiospectraof45Hyadesdwarfsusingstandardone-dimensional,plane-parallelLTEmodels.Effective temperatures of the stellar sample range from 4319 to 6301 K, and the derived relative O abundances as a function of Teff evince a trichotomous morphology. At TeA > 6100 K, there is evidence of an increase in the O abundances with increasing Teff, consistent with non-LTE (NLTE) predictions. At intermediate Teff (5450 K TeA 6100 K), the O abundances are flat, and star-to-star values are in good agreement, having a mean value of ½O/H¼þ0:25 Æ0:02; however, systematic errors at the P0.10 dex level …

Gamma-rays from radioactive 26Al (half life ~7.2 105 yr) provide a 'snapshot' view of ongoing nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy1. The Galaxy is relatively transparent to such gamma-rays, and emission has been found concentrated along the plane of the Galaxy2. This led to the conclusion1 that massive stars throughout the Galaxy dominate the production of 26Al. On the other hand, meteoritic data show locally-produced 26Al, perhaps from spallation reactions in the protosolar disk. Furthermore, prominent gamma-ray emission from the Cygnus region2,3 suggests that a substantial fraction of Galactic 26Al could originate in localized star-forming regions. Here we report high spectral resolution …

Apobec3g/3f Mediates Intrinsic Resistance Of Monocyte-Derived Dendritic Cells To Hiv-1 Infection, Marjorie Pion, Angela Granelli-Piperno, Bastein Mangeat
Publications
HIV-1 infects immature dendritic cells (iDCs), but infection is inefficient compared with activated CD4+ T cells and only involves a small subset of iDCs. We analyzed whether this could be attributed to specific cellular restrictions during the viral life cycle. To study env-independent restriction to HIV-1 infection, we used a single-round infection assay with HIV-1 pseudotyped with vesicular stomatitis virus G protein (HIV-VSVG). Small interfering RNA-mediated depletion of APOBEC3G/3F (A3G/3F), but not TRIM5α, enhanced HIV-1 infection of iDCs, indicating that A3G/3F controls the sensitivity of iDCs to HIV-1 infection. Furthermore, sequences of HIV reverse transcripts revealed G-to-A hypermutation of …
Crossing The Waterline: A Ritual Inquiry, Barbara Bickel
Crossing The Waterline: A Ritual Inquiry, Barbara Bickel
Publications
In this essay, I inquire phenomenologically into a gesture that I performed and documented through photography. This gesture is significant because it has led me to consider the resistant edge of myself as an artist, researcher, and educator. It is from this resistant edge that I find myself crossing a metaphorical waterline. Waterlines mark the liminal threshold between water and air, i.e., the point of conscious awareness—of breath—below which lay the unknown. This metaphor has helped me become aware of myself as artist, writer, learner, and teacher. In this art essay of my living inquiry into a performed gesture within …

Distribution Of The Long-Tailed Weasel (Mustela Frenata) In Illinois, Saleen M. Richter, Eric M. Schauber
Distribution Of The Long-Tailed Weasel (Mustela Frenata) In Illinois, Saleen M. Richter, Eric M. Schauber
Publications
Knowing the geographic distribution of any species is an important first step toward understanding its ecology. Long-tailed weasels (Mustela frenata) are secretive and difficult to detect, so little is known about their distribution in Illinois. To fill this gap in the knowledge, we solicited information from museum curators about the sites where long-tailed weasel specimens were collected in Illinois and surveyed biologists and recreational trappers to document locations of where they had seen or captured long-tailed weasels. We present an updated map of long-tailed weasel distribution, documenting presence in at least 60 of the 102 counties in Illinois. Long-tailed weasels …

Post-Recruitment Survival Of White-Tailed Deer Fawns In Southern Illinois, John H. Rohm, Clayton K. Nielsen, Eric M. Schauber, Alan Woolf
Publications
Reliable estimates of survival for white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) fawns are needed for sound deer management. Several studies have estimated fawn survival prior to recruitment (i.e., before the onset of hunting season) but few have monitored fawns post-recruitment, especially in the lower Midwest or Southeast. We captured and radiocollared 166 neonatal fawns during 2002–2004 in southern Illinois. Ninety-one fawns survived to recruitment and were monitored for survival from 1 October until the end of the firearm hunting season (typically 8 December). Post-recruitment survival was 0.73 (95% CI = 0.63 – 0.83). Hunter harvest was the primary source of …

Cognitive Engineering Research Methodology: A Proposed Study Of Visualization Analysis Techniques, Cristin M. Hall, Sonya A.H. Mcmullen, David L. Hall
Publications
The rapid development of new sensors and wide-band communications provides the capability to collect enormous amounts of data. An increasing challenge involves how to understand and interpret the data to yield knowledge about evolving situations or threats (e.g., of military situations, state of complex systems, etc.). New visualization tools and techniques are becoming available to support advanced visualization including three-dimensional, full immersion display environments and tools to support novel visualizations. Examples include network system display tools and evolving multi-sensory situation environments. Despite the emergence of such tools, there has been limited systematic test and evaluations to determine the efficacy of …
Improvement Of Bioenergetics Model Predictions For Fish Undergoing Compensatory Growth, Gregory W. Whitledge, Przemyslaw G. Bajer, Robert S. Hayward
Improvement Of Bioenergetics Model Predictions For Fish Undergoing Compensatory Growth, Gregory W. Whitledge, Przemyslaw G. Bajer, Robert S. Hayward
Publications
A previous evaluation of a bioenergetics model applied to juvenile hybrid sunfish (F1 hybrid of female green sunfish Lepomis cyanellus × male bluegill L. macrochirus) undergoing compensatory growth (CG) indicated that the model substantially overestimated growth and underestimated cumulative consumption. This result suggested that fish bioenergetics models might not adequately account for physiological shifts that occur during CG. However, we demonstrate that application of a recently developed procedure for correcting consumption- and growth-rate-dependent systematic errors common among bioenergetics models negates much of the predictive error that had been attributed to the physiological complexities of CG. Correction equations for …
Intimate Homicide: Gender And Crime Control, 1880-1920, Carolyn B. Ramsey
Intimate Homicide: Gender And Crime Control, 1880-1920, Carolyn B. Ramsey
Publications
The received wisdom, among feminists and others, is that historically the criminal justice system tolerated male violence against women. This article dramatically revises feminist understanding of the legal history of public responses to intimate homicide by showing that, in both the eastern and the western United States, men accused of killing their intimates often received stern punishment, including the death penalty, whereas women charged with similar crimes were treated leniently. Although no formal "battered woman's defense" existed in the late 1800s and early 1900s, courts and juries implicitly recognized one--and even extended it to abandoned women who killed their unfaithful …
A Digital Age Communications Act Paradigm For Federal-State Relations, Kyle D. Dixon, Philip J. Weiser
A Digital Age Communications Act Paradigm For Federal-State Relations, Kyle D. Dixon, Philip J. Weiser
Publications
This article captures the effort of the Digital Age Communications Act (DACA) to craft a new framework for the federal-state relationship in implementing a next generation telecommunications regulatory regime. In particular, it sets forth a DACA model that would implement a "rule of law" regulatory paradigm for an era of technological dynamism. This era requires, as the article explains, a coherent federal framework that circumscribes the role of state and local authorities so as to advance sound competition policy goals. The sole exception to this policy is the recognition that a basic local service rate retains both political and practical …

Atomic Animals: Toward The Re-Invention Of Natural History And Science Filmmaking, Walter C. Metz
Publications
This essay explores the use of atomic imagery in natural history films as presented in the United States on The Discovery Channel. Using the methods of nuclear criticism, the article builds a case study of the apocalyptic and militarist metaphors employed by an episode of PaleoWorld devoted to the Stegosaurus and then broadens the scope toward more popular animal filmmaking, in particular, “blue chip” wildlife films such as Lion Battlefield.

Intra-Industry Specialization And Trade Expansion In U.S. Trade With The Free Trade Areas Of The Americas (Ftaa), John R. Ledgerwood, E. M. Ekanayake, Mihalis Halkides
Publications
This paper aims to explain the extent of vertical and horizontal intra-industry trade (IIT) in United State's foreign trade with the other 33 members of the Free Trade Areas of the Americas (FTAA). It also attempts to identify the country- and industry-specific determinants of vertical and horizontal IIT. This study uses detailed trade data at the 10-digit Harmonized System (HS) industry level and covers a longer and more recent period, 1990 through 2005. The Grubel-Lloyd intra-industry trade index is used to calculate the intensity of these two types of intra-industry trade. One of the main findings is that, with the …
Composting Of Biodegradable Municipal Waste In Ireland, Niamh Power, Jerry D. Murphy
Composting Of Biodegradable Municipal Waste In Ireland, Niamh Power, Jerry D. Murphy
Publications
The implementation of the Landfill Directive (96/31/EC) will lead to a massive reduction in quantities of Biodegradable Municipal Waste (BMW), which may be landfilled. In 2016, an estimated 2.6 million tonnes of BMW will require diversion from landfill in Ireland. Recycling of dry paper, reuse of textiles and home composting will divert significant quantities of BMW. However, to divert the quantities required to comply with the Directive a significant proportion of the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW) will require treatment in centralised biological facilities. A survey was undertaken of composting facilities in Ireland to ascertain present capacity, present …

Let The People Know The Facts: Can Government Information Removed From The Internet Be Reclaimed?, Susan Nevelow Mart
Publications
Ms. Mart examines the legal bases of the public's right to access government information, reviews the types of information that have recently been removed from the Internet, and analyzes the rationales given for the removals. She suggests that the concerted use of the Freedom of Information Act by public interest groups and their constituents is a possible method of returning the information to the Internet.
