In this paper, we review the history of Hydropsychinae genus-level classification and nomenclature and present new molecular evidence from mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and nuclear large subunit ribosomal ribonucleic acid (28S) markers supporting the monophyly of the genus Hydropsyche. Both molecular and morphological characters support a broad conservative definition of Hydropsyche. Caledopsyche, Hydatomanicus, and Occutanspsyche are synonymized with Hydropsyche. The following species groups are established: Hydropsyche bronta Group (generally corresponding with Ceratopsyche and Hydropsyche morosa and newae Groups), Hydropsyche colonica Group (generally corresponding with Orthopsyche), Hydropsyche instabilis Group (generally corresponding with Hydropsyche s.s.), and Hydropsyche naumanni Group …

Two clones of turmeric (Cucruma longa L.) were assessed nine times during a 28-day culture period in double phosphate MS liquid medium containing 2%, 4% and 6% sucrose. The phase of rapid shoot bud multiplication lasted for 21 days or less, in both clones in all media. The maximum multiplication rate was 3.4× at 20 and 19 days, with 3.9% or 4.7% initial sucrose concentration being optimal for the clones 9-3 and 35-1, respectively. Dry mass increased over the entire culture period and was greatest with 4.8% or at least 6% initial sucrose concentration for the two clones, 9-3 …

Structural Assessment Of The Effects Of Amino Acid Substitutions On Protein Stability And Protein-Protein Interaction, Shaolei Teng, Liangjiang Wang, Anand K. Srivastava, Charles E. Schwartz, Emil Alexov
Publications
A structure-based approach is described for predicting the effects of amino acid substitutions on protein function. Structures were predicted using a homology modelling method. Folding and binding energy differences between wild-type and mutant structures were computed to quantitatively assess the effects of amino acid substitutions on protein stability and protein–protein interaction, respectively. We demonstrated that pathogenic mutations at the interaction interface could affect binding energy and destabilise protein complex, whereas mutations at the non-interface might reduce folding energy and destabilise monomer structure. The results suggest that the structure-based analysis can provide useful information for understanding the molecular mechanisms of diseases.

As our contribution to this special issue, we examine how understandings of objects are talked and worked into being within concerted action. We will argue that formal procedure can serve as a resource in this regard. Procedures make relevant certain kinds of objects, objects that serve as its materials, tools, end-products, agents, etc. Our analysis traces all references to a particular object, the cystic artery, over the course of a surgery conducted at a teaching hospital. The arrangements of the operating theatre impose certain constraints on how the key participants, a surgeon in training, a faculty member and a medical …

The Equivalence Principle, Uniformly Accelerated Reference Frames, And The Uniform Gravitational Field, Gerardo Muñoz, Preston Jones
Publications
The relation between uniformly accelerated reference frames in flat spacetime and the uniform gravitational field is examined in a relativistic context. It is shown that contrary to previous statements, equivalence does not break down in this context. No restrictions to Newtonian approximations or small enclosures are necessary.

We utilize high-resolution (R ∼ 60,000), high signal-to-noise ratio (∼100) spectroscopy of 17 cool Pleiades dwarfs to examine the confounding star-to-star scatter in the λ6707 Li i line strengths in this young cluster. Our Pleiades, selected for their small projected rotational velocity and modest chromospheric emission, evince substantial scatter in the line strengths of λ6707 Li i feature that is absent in the λ7699 K i resonance line. The Li i scatter is not correlated with that in the high-excitation λ7774 O i feature, and the magnitude of the former is greater than the latter despite the larger temperature sensitivity …

This paper describes a method for simulating univariate and multivariate Burr Type III and Type XII distributions with specied correlation matrices. The methodology is based on the derivation of the parametric forms of a pdf and cdf for this family of distributions. The paper shows how shape parameters can be computed for specied values of skew and kurtosis. It is also demonstrated how to compute percentage points and other measures of central tendency such as the mode, median, and trimmed mean. Examples are provided to demonstrate how this Burr family can be used in the context of distribution fitting using …
Assessment Of Otolith Chemistry For Identifying Source Environment Of Fishes In The Lower Illinois River, Illinois, John M. Zeigler, Gregory Whitledge
Assessment Of Otolith Chemistry For Identifying Source Environment Of Fishes In The Lower Illinois River, Illinois, John M. Zeigler, Gregory Whitledge
Publications
Knowledge of habitats used by fish throughout their life history is important for management and conservation of riverine fish populations and habitats. Naturally occurring chemical markers in otoliths have recently been used to determine natal origins and environmental history of fishes in a variety of marine and freshwater environments. However, to our knowledge no studies have examined the applicability of this technique in large floodplain rivers in the U.S.A. We evaluated otolith microchemistry and stable isotopic composition as tools for determining origins of fishes in the lower Illinois River, its tributaries, and floodplain lakes. Fishes were collected from eight sites …
Capacity And Factor Timing Effects In Active Portfolio Management, Conrad Ciccotello, Jason Greene, Leng Ling, David Rakowski
Capacity And Factor Timing Effects In Active Portfolio Management, Conrad Ciccotello, Jason Greene, Leng Ling, David Rakowski
Publications
Capacity constraints limit the profits of some investment strategies, while other strategies are more scalable. We develop a dollar-weighted return measure that parses the factor timing by investors and a strategy’s capacity constraints. We find that actively managed funds exhibit significant capacity and timing effects, while index funds display only timing effects. A portfolio’s liquidity, investment style, and distribution policy are important in explaining variation in capacity constraints. The analysis demonstrates that capacity and timing effects are important in analyzing portfolio manager skill and the cost of active investing.

Laboratory Evaluation Of Two Bioenergetics Models For Brown Trout, Gregory Whitledge, Przemyslaw G. Bajer, Robert S. Hayward
Publications
Laboratory growth and food consumption data for two size classes of brown trout Salmo trutta that experienced three distinct feeding regimes at two temperatures were used to evaluate the abilities of two bioenergetics models to predict fish growth. Accuracy of cumulative consumption predictions was also tested for one of the models. Model errors for predicting relative growth rate of individual fish were regressed on observed mean daily consumption rate to assess whether consumption-dependent prediction error commonly observed in bioenergetics models for other fish species was exhibited by the two brown trout bioenergetics models. Both models yielded unbiased estimates of brown …

Antigen-presenting cells can capture antigens that are deposited in the skin, including vaccines given subcutaneously. These include different dendritic cells (DCs) such as epidermal Langerhans cells (LCs), dermal DCs, and dermal langerin DCs. To evaluate access of dermal antigens to skin DCs, we used mAb to two C-type lectin endocytic receptors, DEC-205/CD205 and langerin/CD207. When applied to murine and human skin explant cultures, these mAbs were efficiently taken up by epidermal LCs. In addition, anti-DEC-205 targeted langerin CD103 and langerin CD103 mouse dermal DCs. Unexpectedly, intradermal injection of either mAb, but not isotype control, resulted in strong and rapid labeling …

The Presumpscot River flows 27 miles from Sebago Lake into Casco Bay and the Gulf of Maine. The river’s watershed encompasses 205 square miles of primarily forested and agricultural land. The river itself has a history of extensive industrial use since the early 1700s. By the 1950s, the river had nine dams and was so polluted that fumes from the river peeled paint off nearby homes. Prior to industrialization, there were abundant salmon, alewife, shad, smelt, and eel fisheries, which have since been greatly diminished.

Assigning Storage Locations In An Automated Warehouse, Mark H. Mcelreath, Maria E. Mayorga, Laine Mears
Publications
A common rule for retrieval from Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (AS/RS) is to follow a first-in-first-out (FIFO) discipline. In many cases FIFO priority is set by date of manufacture. In some cases, however, the material may be stored in the warehouse according to a FIFO priority which depends on something other than the date of manufacture of that material, such as rules based on shipping container number or date of entry to warehouse. In this case, there needs to be a systematic approach to assigning a range of FIFO priority. A simulation model is developed to test the impact …

Design Assessment: Consumer Reports Style, Todd R. Kelley
Publications
The article analyzes a design assessment-based activity, in which students are asked to evaluate an existing technology through a Consumer Reports-style approach. According to H. Petroski, the exposure of students to several design examples is important to start learning the basic elements needed in the design process. It claims that the activity will enable students to sharpen their knowledge in several areas including identifying design constraints and criteria, training via study of open designs, and practicing engineering design methods for optimization. It suggests that these are important skills for creating the student's capacity to undertake bigger design activities.

Turtles use their limbs during both aquatic and terrestrial locomotion, but water and land impose dramatically different physical requirements. How must musculoskeletal function be adjusted to produce locomotion through such physically disparate habitats? We addressed this question by quantifying forelimb kinematics and muscle activity during aquatic and terrestrial locomotion in a generalized freshwater turtle, the red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta), using digital high-speed video and electromyography (EMG). Comparisons of our forelimb data to previously collected data from the slider hindlimb allow us to test whether limb muscles with similar functional roles show qualitatively similar modulations of activity across habitats. The different …

The effectiveness of teachers has been regarded as crucial to the success of standards-based reform (Fishman, Marx, Best, & Tal, 2003). Research, particularly within science and mathematics, has underscored the need for professional development to help teachers understand (a) subject matter, (b) learners and learning, and (c) teaching methods (Loucks-Horsley, 1999). In addition to focusing on teacher professional development, national reform efforts have also emphasized science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education (i.e., Rising Above the Gathering Storm, NRC, 2006). While substantial work has been conducted in mathematics and science, the efforts in technology and engineering education are much less …

Entamoeba histolytica is an intestinal protozoan parasite that causes amoebic dysentery and liver abscess. Phagocytosis by the parasite is a critical virulence process, since it is a prerequisite for tissue invasion and establishment of chronic infection. While the roles of many of the proteins that regulate phagocytosis-related signaling events in E. histolytica have been characterized, the functions of lipids in this cellular process remain largely unknown in this parasite. In other systems, phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-trisphosphate (PIP3), a major product of phosphoinositide 3 kinase (PI3-kinase) activity, is essential for phagocytosis. Pleckstrin homology (PH) domains are protein domains that specifically bind …
