Beyond Leadership, Kees Rietsema, Daryl Watkins
Beyond Leadership, Kees Rietsema, Daryl Watkins
Publications
Organizational leadership must evolve beyond a focus on those occupying the positions of organizational leadership. Complex systems provide the opportunity to rethink the leadership function in terms which are holistic and comprehensive. Applying the principles of complexity may provide the basis for a more collaborative, distributed and productive “way of being” for today’s organizations.

The Initial–Final Mass Relation Among White Dwarfs In Wide Binaries, J. K. Zhao, T. D. Oswalt, L. A. Willson, Q. Wang, G. Zhao
Publications
We present the initial–final mass relation derived from 10 white dwarfs in wide binaries that consist of a main-sequence star and a white dwarf. The temperature and gravity of each white dwarf were measured by fitting theoretical model atmospheres to the observed spectrum using a χ2 fitting algorithm. The cooling time and mass were obtained using theoretical cooling tracks. The total age of each binary was estimated from the chromospheric activity of its main-sequence component to an uncertainty of about 0.17 dex in log t. The difference between the total age and white dwarf cooling time is taken …

Co2MnSb thin films were grown on glass and GaAs (001) substrates using pulsed laser deposition. The films were grown in magnetic fields (HG = 500 Oe and 0 Oe) that were applied in the plane of the substrate during the deposition process. Angle-dependent magneto-optic Kerr effect measurements for films grown on glass revealed a uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in the direction of the applied growth field. Films grown on GaAs (001) exhibited more complicated magnetic anisotropy behavior, due to additional contributions from the substrate. Point contact Andreév reflection spectroscopy measurements indicated that the spin polarizations of the films …
A Gibbs Sampler For The Multidimensional Item Response Model, Yanyan Sheng, Todd C. Headrick
A Gibbs Sampler For The Multidimensional Item Response Model, Yanyan Sheng, Todd C. Headrick
Publications
Current procedures for estimating compensatory multidimensional item response theory MIRT models using Markov chain Monte Carlo MCMC techniques are inadequate in that they do not directly model the interrelationship between latent traits. This limits the implementation of the model in various applications and further prevents the development of other types of IRT models that offer advantages not realized in existing models. In view of this, an MCMC algorithm is proposed for MIRT models so that the actual latent structure is directly modeled. It is demonstrated that the algorithm performs well in modeling parameters as well as intertrait correlations and that …
Application Of Focal Conflict Theory To Psychoeducational Groups: Implications For Process, Content, And Leadership, Julia Champe, Deborah J. Rubel
Application Of Focal Conflict Theory To Psychoeducational Groups: Implications For Process, Content, And Leadership, Julia Champe, Deborah J. Rubel
Publications
Group psychoeducation is a common group type used for a range of purposes. The literature presents balancing content and process as a challenge for psychoeducational group leaders. While the significance of group psychoeducation is supported, practitioners are given little direction for addressing process in these groups. Focal Conflict Theory (FCT) is a model for conceptualizing and intervening in group process that has been applied to therapy and work groups. This article presents the challenges of psychoeducational groups, describes FCT, and discusses its application to psychoeducational groups using case examples. Implications for leaders of psychoeducation groups are discussed.

This commentary focuses on the importance that DNA sequence analysis has in biodiversity studies and the need for improving administrative procedures regarding biodiversity research in Peru. Given the rapid loss of biodiversity and natural resources in many areas of Peru, research aimed at identifying, characterizing, and describing biodiversity is a priority for developing appropriate conservation and mitigation strategies. For current and future research on Peruvian biodiversity and conservation, we emphasize the importance of using an integrative taxonomy approach, including the study of evolutionary processes associated with areas of high biodiversity and endemism. Additionally, it is essential that governmental institutions responsible …
The Capital Gap: Nollywood And The Limits Of Informal Trade, John C. Mccall
The Capital Gap: Nollywood And The Limits Of Informal Trade, John C. Mccall
Publications
This article examines Nollywood as a creative industry based in Africa’s informal sector. By definition, the informal sector produces no financial records, so no quantitative economic data are presented. This research utilizes ethnographic methods and anthropological analysis to highlight the importance of the video movie industry to Nigerian people, its place in their economic life and its integral role in their culture. Nollywood’s intimacy with Nigerians has been achieved by way of the industry’s distinctive informal system of production and distribution. This same informality prevents the video industry from establishing financial legitimacy. Without the ability to generate capital, the industry …
Evaluation Of Δd And Δ18o As Natural Markers Of Invertebrate Source Environment And Dispersal In The Middle Mississippi River-Floodplain Ecosystem, David J. Myers, Gregory Whitledge, Matt R. Whiles
Evaluation Of Δd And Δ18o As Natural Markers Of Invertebrate Source Environment And Dispersal In The Middle Mississippi River-Floodplain Ecosystem, David J. Myers, Gregory Whitledge, Matt R. Whiles

Movement of invertebrates among large rivers, tributaries, and floodplain lakes or dispersal of adult aquatic insects from riverine or floodplain habitats may provide important subsidies to food webs in receiving habitats. Intensive sampling at habitat interfaces and artificial labeling are two approaches to assess freshwater invertebrate dispersal, but these are difficult to implement at a landscape scale. Natural chemical tracers have been used to track dispersal of fishes and marine invertebrates, but the potential applicability of stable isotope ratios as natural tracers of invertebrate dispersal in freshwater environments has not been assessed. We evaluated stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes (δD …
A Doubling Method For The Generalized Lambda Distribution, Todd C. Headrick, Mohan Dev Pant
A Doubling Method For The Generalized Lambda Distribution, Todd C. Headrick, Mohan Dev Pant
Publications
This paper introduces a new family of generalized lambda distributions GLDs based on a method of doubling symmetric GLDs. The focus of the development is in the context of L-moments and L-correlation theory. As such, included is the development of a procedure for specifying double GLDs with controlled degrees of L-skew, L-kurtosis, and L-correlations. The procedure can be applied in a variety of settings such as modeling events and Monte Carlo or simulation studies. Further, it is demonstrated that estimates of L-skew, L-kurtosis, and L-correlation are substantially superior to conventional product-moment estimates …
On The Order Statistics Of Standard Normal-Based Power Method Distributions, Todd C. Headrick, Mohan Dev Pant
On The Order Statistics Of Standard Normal-Based Power Method Distributions, Todd C. Headrick, Mohan Dev Pant
Publications
This paper derives a procedure for determining the expectations of order statistics associated with the standard normal distribution Z and its powers of order three and five (Z3 and Z5). the procedure is demonstrated for sample sizes of n ≤ 9. It is shown that Z3 and Z5 have expectations of order statistics that are functions of the expectations for Z and can be expressed in terms of explicit elementary functions for sample sizes of n ≤ 5. For sample sizes of n = 6,7 the expectations of the order statistics for Z, Z3 …

Members of the triggering expressed on myeloid cells (Trem) receptor family fine-tune inflammatory responses. We previously identified one of these receptors, called Treml4, expressed mainly in the spleen, as well as at high levels by CD8α + dendritic cells and macrophages. Like other Trem family members, Treml4 has an Ig-like extracellular domain and a short cytoplasmic tail that associates with the adaptor DAP12. To follow up on our initial results that Treml4-Fc fusion proteins bind necrotic cells, we generated a knockout mouse to assess the role of Treml4 in the uptake and presentation of dying cells in vivo. Loss of …
Decisions About Dendritic Cells: Past, Present, And Future, Ralph M. Steinman
Decisions About Dendritic Cells: Past, Present, And Future, Ralph M. Steinman
Publications
A properly functioning adaptive immune system signifies the best features of life. It is diverse beyond compare, tolerant without fail, and capable of behaving appropriately with a myriad of infections and other challenges. Dendritic cells are required to explain how this remarkable system is energized and directed. I frame this article in terms of the major decisions that my colleagues and I have made in dendritic cell science and some of the guiding themes at the time the decisions were made. As a result of progress worldwide, there is now evidence of a central role for dendritic cells in initiating …

Dll4-Notch Signaling In Flt3-Independent Dendritic Cell Development And Autoimmunity In Mice, Fabienne Billiard, Camille Lobry, Guillaume Darrasse-Jèze
Publications
Delta-like ligand 4 (Dll4)-Notch signaling is essential for T cell development and alternative thymic lineage decisions. How Dll4-Notch signaling affects pro-T cell fate and thymic dendritic cell (tDC) development is unknown. We found that Dll4 pharmacological blockade induces accumulation of tDCs and CD4 +CD25 +FoxP3 + regulatory T cells (T reg cells) in the thymic cortex. Both genetic inactivation models and anti-Dll4 antibody (Ab) treatment promote de novo natural T reg cell expansion by a DC-dependent mechanism that requires major histocompatibility complex II expression on DCs. Anti-Dll4 treatment converts CD4 -CD8 -c-kit +CD44 +CD25 …

Recent scholarship (Knapp, Copland, Honig, Plecki & Portin, 2010; Louis, Leithwood, Wahlstrom, Anderson et al., 2010) demonstrates the impact of school leadership on student success. Using the research model of the ISSPP (Day, 2010), a team of researchers utilized a dynamic approach to identify leadership practices and beliefs that could be attributed to rises in student achievement and diminishing achievement gaps. In this paper, we present a cross-case analysis of three elementary schools in the southeastern US. Our findings highlight one particular aspect of these practices and beliefs: spirituality.
Infusing Engineering Concepts: Teaching Engineering Design, Jenny L. Daugherty
Infusing Engineering Concepts: Teaching Engineering Design, Jenny L. Daugherty
Publications
Engineering has gained considerable traction in many K-12 schools. However, there are several obstacles or challenges to an effective approach that leads to student learning. Questions such as where engineering best fits in the curriculum; how to include it authentically and appropriately; toward what educational end; and how best to prepare teachers need to be answered. Integration or infusion appears to be the most viable approach; instead of stand-alone engineering courses squeezing into the already crammed curriculum. An integrative approach whereby engineering is infused into the existing curriculum, within science, technology, mathematics or other courses, appears to be the best …

Forelimb Kinematics During Swimming In The Pig-Nosed Turtle, Carettochelys Insculpta, Compared With Other Turtle Taxa: Rowing Versus Flapping, Convergenceversus Intermediacy, Angela R.V. Rivera, Gabriel Rivera, Richard W. Blob
Publications
Animals that swim using appendages do so by way of rowing and/or flapping motions. Often considered discrete categories, rowing and flapping are more appropriately regarded as points along a continuum. The pig-nosed turtle, Carettochelys insculpta, is unusual in that it is the only freshwater turtle to have limbs modified into flippers and swim via synchronous forelimb motions that resemble dorsoventral flapping, traits that evolved independently from their presence in sea turtles. We used high-speed videography to quantify forelimb kinematics in C. insculpta and a closely related, highly aquatic rower (Apalone ferox). Comparisons of our new data with those previously collected …

Effects Of Cytokinin On Multiplication And Rooting Of Aloe Barbadensis During Micropropagation On Agar And Liquid Medium, Jeffrey Adelberg, Jacqueline Naylor-Adelberg
Publications
Aloe barbadensis (syn. Aloe vera) was micropropagated on agar and liquid medium at varied benzyladenine (BA) and meta-topolin (MT) concentrations
(0, 1, 3.2, and 10 μM) for three successive culture cycles and then transferred to a greenhouse for growth. MT induced multiplication at the highest concentration (10 μM) and BA produced the greatest number of plantlets (at 3.2 μM) with optimal multiplication at approximately 6 μM. Liquid medium did not affect multiplication rate when compared with agar, but plants were twice as large from
liquid as compared with those from agar at the time of transfer to the greenhouse. After …
Fuel Conditions Associated With Native And Exotic Grasses In A Subtropical Dry Forest In Puerto Rico, Jarrod M. Thaxton, Skip J. Van Bloem, Stefanie Whitmire
Fuel Conditions Associated With Native And Exotic Grasses In A Subtropical Dry Forest In Puerto Rico, Jarrod M. Thaxton, Skip J. Van Bloem, Stefanie Whitmire
Publications
Exotic grasses capable of increasing frequency and intensity of anthropogenic fire have invaded subtropical and tropical dry forests worldwide. Since many dry forest trees are susceptible to fire, this can result in decline of native species and loss of forest cover. While the contribution of exotic grasses to altered fire regimes has been well documented, the role of native grasses in contributing to fuel loads in dry forest has received little attention. We assessed differences in fuel conditions among native and exotic grasses within a subtropical dry forest preserve in Puerto Rico. We quantified fine fuel loads, fuel continuity, and …
Alternative Support For Teachers In Challenging Economic Times: The Use Of Virtual Coaching, C. C. Bates
Alternative Support For Teachers In Challenging Economic Times: The Use Of Virtual Coaching, C. C. Bates
Publications
This qualitative study explored the use of virtual literacy coaching by examining 18 coaching sessions between a university-based literacy coach and a first-grade reading interventionist using Adobe Connect, a web-based collaborative tool. The application provided a virtual meeting space and through the use of video pods the teacher and coach had synchronous audio and video communication. Each coaching session lasted approximately one hour and included a pre-observation discussion, a 30-minute individualized lesson with a struggling reader, and a debriefing conversation. Data, including transcriptions of the coaching sessions, interviews with participants, field notes, and journal entries were analyzed using the constant-comparative …

The Private Provision Of Public Goods: An Analysis Of Homes On Golf Courses, Robert E. Mccormick, Frank F. Limehouse, Melissa M. Yeoh
Publications
This paper examines the joint production of golf and real estate development. The empirical results of this analysis show that, over time, golf courses are being constructed less for recreational golf and more for contractual assurance of green open space for homes. We believe that this fundamentally provides some evidence that the demand for environmental quality is growing and that markets are increasingly able to find creative contracting mechanisms to satisfy demands for public goods.

Using Single-Case Participatory Action Research As A Methodology To Explore Appalachian Summer Camp Communities, Barry A. Garst, Nancy K. Franz, Brian Peters, Chris Smith, Sarah Baughman
Publications
Community educators have long known the value of direct experience in the learning process. Participatory action research extends this philosophy to the realm of research. This article examines the value of involving front line camp staff, members of the camp community in Appalachia as practitioner researchers with university scientists in studying the type and conditions of transformative learning in young adult camp staff. A young adult who was a camp community member assisted the researchers with methodology, data analysis, data interpretation, and dissemination of findings. This resulted in a more accurate, richer, and thicker description of the camp community member’s …
Measuring The Stellar Accretion Rates Of Herbig Ae/Be Stars, Brian Donehew, Sean D. Brittain
Measuring The Stellar Accretion Rates Of Herbig Ae/Be Stars, Brian Donehew, Sean D. Brittain
Publications
The accretion rate of young stars is a fundamental characteristic of these systems. While accretion onto T Tauri stars has been studied extensively, little work has been done on measuring the accretion rate of their intermediate-mass analogs, the Herbig Ae/Be stars. Measuring the stellar accretion rate of Herbig Ae/Bes is not straightforward both because of the dearth of metal absorption lines available for veiling measurements and the intrinsic brightness of Herbig Ae/Be stars at ultraviolet wavelengths where the brightness of the accretion shock peaks. Alternative approaches to measuring the accretion rate of young stars by measuring the luminosity of proxies such …

Manufacturing Process Modeling And Application To Intelligent Control, M. Laine Mears, Parakshit Mehta, Mathew Kuttolamadom, Carlos Montes, Joshua Jones, Wesley Salandro, Drew Werner
Publications
This paper reviews the major findings and intellectual contributions made over the past five years through research in the laboratory of Dr. Laine Mears at Clemson University. The focus of the laboratory’s work is in modeling of traditional and novel manufacturing processes, and application of such models to process control through model-based control strategies. Introducing intelligence to the manufacturing process through physical descriptions of the phenomena being controlled allows for more precise control as compared with reactive systems or those with simple feed-forward control schemes. For traditional processes, new approaches to process characterization allow for more precise control. For novel …

Team Based Engineering Design Thinking, Nathan Mentzer
Publications
The objective of this research was to explore design thinking among teams of high school students. This objective is encompassed in the research question driving this inquiry: How do teams of high school students allocate time across stages of design? Design thinking on the professional level typically occurs in a team environment. Many individuals contribute in a variety of ways to facilitate the successful development of a solution to a problem. Teachers often require students to work in groups, but little is known about how the group functions in the context of design and the potential interaction between group performance …

The Influence Of International Service-Learning On Transcultural Self-Efficacy In Baccalaureate Nursing Graduates And Their Subsequent Practice, Roxanne Amerson
Publications
The purpose of this study was to explain how participation in an international service-learning project during a community health course influenced transcultural self-efficacy of baccalaureate nursing graduates following graduation and their subsequent clinical practice. A qualitative, explanatory case study was used to conduct telephone interviews with 14 nursing graduates, who had previously participated in international trips to Ecuador or Guatemala. A constant comparative analysis revealed themes related to increased self-efficacy in the cognitive, practical, and affective learning dimensions of cultural competence. Additional themes focused on the importance of experiential learning, the provision of culturally congruent care, and a commitment to …
