Running With The Pack: Jit & Automation For Small Manufacturers, Thomas E. Phillips, John R. Ledgerwood Jun 1994

Running With The Pack: Jit & Automation For Small Manufacturers, Thomas E. Phillips, John R. Ledgerwood

Publications

While both just in time (JIT) concepts and automation programs have been widely implemented and highly successful in large manufacturing companies, many smaller manufacturing companies have wondered whether it would be economically feasible to utilize these same techniques and derive these same benefits. When JIT is adopted by small manufacturers, it provides them with advantages over traditional manufacturing systems, such as lower cost, quality improvements, higher productivity, and less working capital tied up in inventory. Small US manufacturers must understand the basic principles and philosophy of JIT and update their production equipment if they are to be competitive in today's …

Upon Closer Inspection...U.S. Naval Aviation Mishaps 1977-1992, Scott A. Shappell, Douglas A. Wiegmann Apr 1994

Upon Closer Inspection...U.S. Naval Aviation Mishaps 1977-1992, Scott A. Shappell, Douglas A. Wiegmann

Publications

The U.S. Navy/Marine Corps Class A flight/flight-related mishap rate has declined markedly since 1953. However, analysis of all Class A, B, and C naval aviation mishaps between January 1977 and December 1992 reveals that mishaps attributable to human factors have declined at a slower rate than those attributable to mechanical/environmental factors. Upon closer inspection of the data, marked differences were evident between single-piloted and dual-piloted aircraft. Global trends were primarily a function of single-piloted aircraft, particularly when phase of flight and time of day that a mishap occurred are considered. Previously reported improvement in aviation safety may be biased by …

Unitized, Nonselective Cutting Of In Vitro Watermelon, Jeff W. Adelberg, Y Alper, R E. Young, B B. Rhodes

Publications

Unitized, nonselective mass cutting of Stage II Citrullus lanatus cv. Charlee (watermelon) plant tissue cultures has been achieved with various configurations and sizes of wire cutter devices. Time studies revealed that the wire cutters increased the productivity of the cutting function over conventional scalpel and forceps by a factor of 14, Total transfer productivity, including the manual functions of removing tissue from an initial culture vessel and filling (sorting and placing cut tissue segments) new vessels, was increased by a factor of 1,8, The square grid-type cutting devices yielded from 48 to 59% as many viable bud clusters per culture …

Mass Handling Of Watermelon Microcuttings, Jeffrey Adelberg, Y Alper, R E. Young, B B. Rhodes Jan 1994

Mass Handling Of Watermelon Microcuttings, Jeffrey Adelberg, Y Alper, R E. Young, B B. Rhodes

Publications

Modifications were made in the configurations of the unitizing, nonselective wire cutters used by Alper et al.(1992) for mass cuttings of Stage II Citrullus lanatus cv. Charlee (watermelon) plant tissue cultures to further enhance productivity. Mounting the cutter in an inverted position over the receiving vessel eliminated time required for filling. This cut-and-dump technique became 4.8 times more productive for the total transfer process than the conventional scalpel and forceps technique when both time and yield of cut segments with visible buds were considered. A concept for growing fewer, larger tissue clusters per vessel in mini-trays with orienting cells and …

Eastern Airlines: The Rise And Fall Of "The Wings Of Man", Benjamin H. Troemel Jr., James T. Schultz, Marian C. Schultz

Publications

This paper examines the rise and fall of Eastern Airlines from 1928 to 1991. lt outlines the carrier's development under a succession of leaders and discusses the major events of each leader's reign. From a small contract mail carrier known as Pitcairn Aviation, Eastern grew to become one of the largest airlines in the free world. But after 26 years of growth and prosperity under the leadership of Eddie Rickenbacker, the airline began to stumble in the early 1960s. Frank Lorenzo took the reins in 1986 and began selling the carrier's assets while attempting to destroy the unions. After a …

Behavioral Effects Of Tyrosine During Sustained Wakefulness, D. L. Wiegmann, D. F. Neri, R. R. Stanny, S. A. Shappell, A. H. Mccardie, D. L. Mckay Dec 1993

Behavioral Effects Of Tyrosine During Sustained Wakefulness, D. L. Wiegmann, D. F. Neri, R. R. Stanny, S. A. Shappell, A. H. Mccardie, D. L. Mckay

Publications

The fatigue and cognitive performance deficits associated with sleep loss and stress, like that experienced during sustained flight operations and nighttime flying, have motivated the search for effective nonpharmacological countermeasures. The behavioral effects of the potential countermeasure tyrosine, an amino-acid precursor to dopamine and norepinephrine, were examined during an episode of continuous nighttime work involving one night's sleep loss. Volunteers performed nine iterations of a battery of cognitive and subjective tasks for approximately 13 h, beginning at 1930 and ending at 0820 the following morning. Subjects remained awake throughout the day on which the experiment began and were awake for …

Measuring The Effects Of Thread Placement On The Kendall Square Ksr1, Amy Apon, T D. Wagner, E Smirni, M Madhukar, L W. Dowdy Aug 1993

Measuring The Effects Of Thread Placement On The Kendall Square Ksr1, Amy Apon, T D. Wagner, E Smirni, M Madhukar, L W. Dowdy

Publications

This paper describes a measurement study of the effects of thread placement on memory access times on the Kendall Square multiprocessor, the KSRl. The KSRl uses a conventional shared memory programming model in a distributed memory architecture. The architecture is based on a ring of rings of 64-bit superscalar microprocessors. The KSRl has a Cache-Only Memory Architecture (COMA). Memory consists of the local cache memoria attached to each processor. Whenever an address is accessed, the data item is automatically copied to the local cache memory module, 80 that access times for subsequent references will be minimal. If a local cache …

The Effects Of Luminance Boundaries On Color Perception, Richard E. Kronauer, Charles F. Stromeyer Iii, Alex Chaparro Jul 1993

The Effects Of Luminance Boundaries On Color Perception, Richard E. Kronauer, Charles F. Stromeyer Iii, Alex Chaparro

Publications

The luminance and red-green chromatic detection mechanisms respond to, respectively, the sum and difference of the long-wave (L) and middle-wave (M) zone contrast signals. The most-detectable stimulus is not a small patch of luminance drifting grating, as suggested by others, but rather a small, foveal red-green chromatic flash. Even at the smallest test size examined, 2.3' diameter, the red-green mechanism i~s more sensitive than the luminance mechanism, which has profound implication for visual physiology. When a suprathreshold luminance flash (a pedestal) occurs coincidentally with a red-green chromatic flash, detection of color is facilitated ~2-fold, regardless of spot size, as shown …

Local economic development can be described as the efforts of community leaders to stimulate business investment and employment to preserve or improve the quality of life in a community. Development objectives are often identified through a formal planning effort, structured public discussion, or other formal and informal processes. Objectives are the specific actions needed to meet broad community development goals. These economic development objectives selected by communities may include diversifying the area economy, increasing opportunities for employment, or expanding the local tax base.

The Ksr1: Experimentation And Modeling Of Poststore, Amy Apon, E Rosti, E Smirni, T D. Wagner, M Madhukar, L W. Dowdy

Publications

Kendall Square Research introduced the KSRl system in 1991. The architecture is based on a ring of rings of 64bit microprocessors. It is a distributed, shared memory system and is scalable. The memory structure is unique and is the key to understanding the system. Different levels of caching eliminates physical memory addressing and leads to the ALLCACHE TM scheme. Since requested data may be found in any of several caches, the initial access time is variable. Once pulled into the local (sub)cache, subsequent access times are fixed and minimal. Thus, the KSRl is a Cache-Only Memory Architecture (COMA) system. This …

The Paradox Of Punishment, Paul Campos Jan 1992

The Paradox Of Punishment, Paul Campos

Publications

Retribution demands reciprocity. In this Essay, Professor Campos contends that classic retributive theory encounters a logical paradox when it attempts to equalize the status of criminal and victim through the institution of punishment. This paradox arises out of a clash between the deontological requirements of equality and justice. He concludes by speculating on the historical relationship between rationalist justifications for vengeance and the elimination of punishment as public spectacle.
