During 19–21 June 2013 a heavy precipitation event affected southern Alberta and adjoining regions, leading to severe flood damage in numerous communities and resulting in the costliest natural disaster in Canadian history. This flood was caused by a combination of meteorological and hydrological factors, which are investigated from weather and climate perspectives with the fifth generation Canadian Regional Climate Model. Results show that the contribution of orographic ascent to precipitation was important, exceeding 30% over the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Another contributing factor was evapotranspiration from the land surface, which is found to have acted as an important moisture …

System And Method For Robust Nonlinear Regulation Control Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Synthetic Jet Actuators, Vladimir V. Golubev, William Mackunis
Publications
An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is provided with a plurality of synthetic jet actuators and a nonlinear robust controller. The controller compensates for uncertainty in a mathematic model that describes the function of the synthetic jet actuators. Compensation is provided by the use of constant feedforward best guess estimates that eliminate the need for more highly computationally burdensome approaches such as the use of time-varying adaptive parameter estimation algorithms.

Vizspace: Interaction In The Positive Parallax Screen Plane, Oyewole Oyekoya, Emily Sassard, Tiana Johnson
Publications
The VizSpace is a physically situated interactive system that combines touch and hand interactions behind the screen to create the effect that users are reaching inside and interacting in a 3D virtual workspace. It extends the conventional touch table interface with hand tracking and 3D visualization to enable interaction in the positive parallax plane, where the binocular focus falls behind the screen so as not to occlude projected images. This paper covers the system design, human factors and ergonomics considerations for an interactive and immersive gesture-based visualization system. Results are presented from a preliminary user study that validates the usability …

Enzymes in Uracil DNA glycosylase (UDG) superfamily are essential for the removal of uracil. Family 4 UDGa is a robust uracil DNA glycosylase that only acts on double-stranded and single-stranded uracil-containing DNA. Based on mutational, kinetic and modeling analyses, a catalytic mechanism involving leaving group stabilization by H155 in motif 2 and water coordination by N89 in motif 3 is proposed. Mutual Information analysis identifies a complexed correlated mutation network including a strong correlation in the EG doublet in motif 1 of family 4 UDGa and in the QD doublet in motif 1 of family 1 UNG. Conversion of EG …

Integrating Multimodal Arguments Into High School Writing Instruction, Emily Howell, Tracy Butler, David Reinking
Publications
We conducted a formative experiment investigating how an intervention that engaged students in constructing multimodal arguments could be integrated into high school English instruction to improve students’ argumentative writing. The intervention entailed three essential components: (a) construction of arguments defined as claims, evidence, and warrants; (b) digital tools that enabled the construction of multimodal arguments; and (c) a process approach to writing. The intervention was implemented for 11 weeks in high school English classrooms. Data included classroom observations; interviews with the teacher, students, and administrators; student reflections; and the products students created. These data, analyzed using grounded-theory coding and constant-comparison …

Cirrus Cloud Microphysics Over Darwin, Australia, Dorothea Ivanova, Matthew Johnson

Ice clouds, crucial to the understanding of both short - and long - term climate trends, are poorly represented in global climate models (GCMs). Cirrus clouds, one of the largest uncertainties in the global radiation budget, have been inadequately studied at low latitudes. Parameterizations exist for mid - latitude and tropical cirrus ( Ivanova et al. 2001; McFarquhar et al. 1997). Due to climate sensitivity in the GCM with respect to cloud input, without robust parameterizations of cirrus clouds, the GCM is inaccurate over most output fields, including radiative forcing, temperature, albedo, and heat flux (Yao and Del Genio 1999). …

A Coupled Localized Rbf Meshless/Drbem Formulation For Accurate Modeling Of Incompressible Fluid Flows, Leonardo Bueno, Eduardo Divo, Alain J. Kassab
Publications
Velocity-pressure coupling schemes for the solution of incompressible fluid flow problems in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) rely on the formulation of Poisson-like equations through projection methods. The solution of these Poisson-like equations represent the pressure correction and the velocity correction to ensure proper satisfaction of the conservation of mass equation at each step of a time-marching scheme or at each level of an iteration process. Inaccurate solutions of these Poisson-like equations result in meaningless instantaneous or intermediate approximations that do not represent the proper time-accurate behavior of the flow. The fact that these equations must be solved to convergence at …

Generalized Thomas-Fermi Equations As The Lampariello Class Of Emden-Fowler Equations, Haret C. Rosu, S.C. Mancas
Publications
A one-parameter family of Emden-Fowler equations defined by Lampariello’s parameter p which, upon using Thomas-Fermi boundary conditions, turns into a set of generalized Thomas-Fermi equations comprising the standard Thomas-Fermi equation for p = 1 is studied in this paper. The entire family is shown to be non integrable by reduction to the corresponding Abel equations whose invariants do not satisfy a known integrability condition. We also discuss the equivalent dynamical system of equations for the standard Thomas-Fermi equation and perform its phase-plane analysis. The results of the latter analysis are similar for the whole class.

An Rbf Interpolation Blending Scheme For Effective Shock-Capturing, M. Harris, Eduardo Divo, Alain J. Kassab

In recent years significant focus has been given to the study of Radial basis functions (RBF), especially in their use on solving partial differential equations (PDE). RBF have an impressive capability of inter- polating scattered data, even when this data presents localized discontinuities. However, for infinitely smooth RBF such as the Multiquadrics, inverse Multiquadrics, and Gaussian, the shape parameter must be chosen properly to obtain accurate approximations while avoiding ill-conditioning of the interpolating matrices. The optimum shape parameter can vary significantly depending on the field, particularly in locations of steep gradients, shocks, or discontinuities. Typically, the shape parameter is chosen …

Net plasma transport in magnetodiscs around giant planets is outward. Observations of plasma temperature have shown that the expanding plasma is heating nonadiabatically during this process. Turbulence has been suggested as a source of heating. However, the mechanism and distribution of magnetic fluctuations in giant magnetospheres are poorly understood. In this study we attempt to quantify the radial and local time dependence of fluctuating magnetic field signatures that are suggestive of turbulence, quantifying the fluctuations in terms of a plasma heating rate density. In addition, the inferred heating rate density is correlated with magnetic field configurations that include azimuthal bend …

In astrophysics, we often aim to estimate one or more parameters for each member object in a population and study the distribution of the fitted parameters across the population. In this paper, we develop novel methods that allow us to take advantage of existing software designed for such case-by-case analyses to simultaneously fit parameters of both the individual objects and the parameters that quantify their distribution across the population. Our methods are based on Bayesian hierarchical modelling which is known to produce parameter estimators for the individual objects that are on average closer to their true values than estimators based …

Based on the temperature and zonal and meridional winds observed with an Na lidar at Andes Lidar Observatory (30.3°S, 70.7°W) on the night of 20–21 July 2015, we report simultaneous upward and downward propagating inertia-gravity waves (IGWs) in the mesosphere/lower stratosphere (MLT). The ground-based periods of the upward and downward IGWs are about 5.4 h and 4.8 h, respectively. The horizontal and vertical wavelengths are about 935 km and 10.9 km for the 5.4 h IGW and about 1248 km and 22 km for the 4.8 h IGW, respectively. Hodograph analyses indicate that the 5.4 h IGW propagates in the …
Particle Production In A Gravitational Wave Background, Preston Jones, Patrick Mcdougall, Douglas Singleton
Particle Production In A Gravitational Wave Background, Preston Jones, Patrick Mcdougall, Douglas Singleton
Publications
In this article, the authors study the possibility that massless particles, such as photons, are produced by a gravitational wave. That such a process should occur is implied by tree-level Feynman diagrams such as two gravitons turning into two photons, i.e., g + g → γ + γ. Here we calculate the rate at which a gravitational wave creates a massless scalar field. This is done by placing the scalar field in the background of a plane gravitational wave and calculating the 4-current of the scalar field. Even in the vacuum limit of the scalar field it has a nonzero …

PubSpace is a repository of full-text peer-reviewed articles resulting from NASA-funded research going back to 1961. The National Center for Biotechnology Information has integrated PubSpace into PubMed Central, a freely available repository of medical research. Using an established, stable, government-hosted platform for PubSpace seems to make sense. However, the lack of clear branding, an uneven application of phrase searching, and a missing thesaurus of NASA terminology highlights that this integration may not be the best.

The rapid development of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) has grown dramatically in the last decade, with increased use in consumer products, industrial materials, and nanomedicines. However, due to increased manufacturing, there is concern that human and environmental exposures may lead to adverse immune outcomes. Mast cells, central to the innate immune response, are one of the earliest sensors of environmental insult and have been shown to play a role in ENM-mediated immune responses. Our laboratory previously determined that mast cells are activated via a non-FcεRI mediated response following silver nanoparticle (Ag NP) exposure, which was dependent upon key physicochemical properties. Using …

Charge-Transfer Interactions Induce Surface Dependent Conformational Changes In Apolipoprotein Biocorona, Achyut J. Raghavendra, Nasser Alsaleh, Jared M. Brown, Ramakrishna Podila
Publications
Upon introduction into a biological system, engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) rapidly associate with a variety of biomolecules such as proteins and lipids to form a biocorona. The presence of “biocorona” influences nano–bio interactions considerably, and could ultimately result in altered biological responses. Apolipoprotein A-I (ApoA-I), the major constituent of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), is one of the most prevalent proteins found in ENM-biocorona irrespective of ENM nature, size, and shape. Given the importance of ApoA-I in HDL and cholesterol transport, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms of ApoA-I adsorption and the associated structural changes for assessing consequences of ENM exposure. Here, …

Index Of Refraction From The Near-Ultraviolet To The Near-Infrared From A Single Crystal Microwave-Assisted Cvd Diamond, Giorgio Turri, Scott Webster, Ying Chen, Benjamin Wickham, Andrew Bennett, Michael Bass
Publications
The refractive index of a type IIa CVD-grown single-crystal diamond was measured by ellipsometry from the near ultraviolet to the near infrared region of the spectrum. As a consequence, a one term Sellmeier Equation with coefficents of B-1 = 4.658 and C-1 = 112.5 for the refractive index of diamond, for the wavelength range from 300 to 1650 nm, was derived that is only as accurate as the input data, +/- 0.002. The experimental results in this paper between 800 and 1650 nm are new, adding to the values available in the literature.

In high-demand fields like science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), more success strategies are needed to effectively recruit and retain college students. One-size fits-all approaches (i.e., those that are supposed to work for all students) often neglect the unique needs of underrepresented populations. Although some strategies exist for helping minority students succeed in STEM, the present investigation uncovered detailed information about how Black male students in engineering and engineering-related fields develop important academic traits such as confidence and resilience. To add to the limited body of literature on Black males in STEM, interview data from 27 Black male students majoring …

High Order Algebraic Splitting For Magnetohydrodynamics Simulation, Mine Akbas, Muhammad Mohebujjaman, Leo G. Rebholz, Mengying Xiao
Publications
This paper proposes, analyzes and tests high order algebraic splitting methods for magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows. The main idea is to apply, at each time step, Yosida-type algebraic splitting to a block saddle point problem that arises from a particular incremental formulation of MHD. By doing so, we dramatically reduce the complexity of the nonsymmetric block Schur complement by decoupling it into two Stokes-type Schur complements, each of which is symmetric positive definite and also is the same at each time step. We prove the splitting is O(Δt3) accurate, and if used together with (block-)pressure correction, is fourth order. …

We use Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging from the ACS Treasury Survey to determine fits for single population isochrones of 69 Galactic globular clusters. Using robust Bayesian analysis techniques, we simultaneously determine ages, distances, absorptions, and helium values for each cluster under the scenario of a \single" stellar population on model grids with solar ratio heavy element abundances. The set of cluster parameters is determined in a consistent and reproducible manner for all clusters using the Bayesian analysis suite BASE-9. Our results are used to re-visit the age-metallicity relation. We find correlations with helium and several other parameters such as …

The Ages Of The Thin Disk, Thick Disk, And The Halo From Nearby White Dwarfs, Mukremin Kilic, Ted Von Hippel, Jeffrey A. Munn, Hugh C. Harris, James W. Liebert, Et Al.
Publications
We present a detailed analysis of the white dwarf luminosity functions derived from the local 40 pc sample and the deep proper motion catalog of Munn et al. (2014, 2017). Many of the previous studies ignored the contribution of thick disk white dwarfs to the Galactic disk luminosity function, which results in an erronous age measurement. We demonstrate that the ratio of thick/thin disk white dwarfs is roughly 20% in the local sample. Simultaneously fitting for both disk components, we derive ages of 6.8-7.0 Gyr for the thin disk and 8.7 ± 0.1 Gyr for the thick disk from the …

Numerical models of ionospheric coupling with the neutral atmosphere are used to investigate perturbations of plasma density, vertically integrated total electron content (TEC), neutral velocity, and neutral temperature associated with large-amplitude acoustic waves generated by the initial ocean surface displacements from strong undersea earthquakes. A simplified source model for the 2011 Tohoku earthquake is constructed from estimates of initial ocean surface responses to approximate the vertical motions over realistic spatial and temporal scales. Resulting TEC perturbations from modeling case studies appear consistent with observational data, reproducing pronounced TEC depletions which are shown to be a consequence of the impacts of …

This study compares the physiological responses of systemic-to-pulmonary shunted single ventricle patients to pulsatile and continuous flow ventricular assist devices (VADs). Performance differences between pulsatile and continuous flow VADs have been clinically observed, but the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Six systemic-to-pulmonary shunted single ventricle patients (mean BSA=0.30 m2) were computationally simulated using a lumped-parameter network tuned to match patient specific clinical data. A first set of simulations compared current clinical implementation of VADs in single ventricle patients. A second set modified pulsatile flow VAD settings with the goal to optimize cardiac output (CO). For all patients, the best-case continuous …
