Scaling Professional Development: Integrity Of Implementation As A Measurement Approach, Brooke A. Whitworth, Lori Rubino-Hare, Nena E. Bloom Jan 2021

Scaling Professional Development: Integrity Of Implementation As A Measurement Approach, Brooke A. Whitworth, Lori Rubino-Hare, Nena E. Bloom

Publications

Professional learning about an innovative teaching method is a demonstrated way to improve teacher practices, and ultimately impact student learning. One way to scale up professional learning is a facilitator development model, in which professional learning and development (PLD) designers prepare facilitators to understand the innovation and they in turn, teach teachers. To understand the effectiveness of this model, identifying how facilitators implement the model with teachers is critical. As such, the Power of Data (POD) team scaled-up effective PLD by providing Facilitation Academies to teach others to facilitate POD Teacher Workshops (TWs). The expectation was that changes based on …

Examining Teacher Leadership As A Model For Improvement In Science Education, Brooke A. Whitworth, Shunderla Wilson, Shelby Watson

Publications

The current mixed method study examined a Teacher Leadership Program (TLP) to determine to what extent participating teachers had changes in content knowledge (CK), practices, leadership skills, and leadership knowledge. The purpose was to determine if this program could be utilized to suggest a sustainable model for improving science education by utilizing teacher leaders to influence changes in their classrooms and at the school level. Participants included 65 K-8 participating teachers and 70 K-8 comparison teachers. Surveys, CK assessments, lessons, observations, and artifacts were analyzed using a-priori coding and descriptive statistics. Participating teachers had statistically significant gains over comparison groups …

A Course In Context: Video Course Trailers, Emily Faulconer, Zachary Dixon, Laura Faulconer, John Griffith

Publications

This study reports the development of a “course trailer” video series that communicates the professional and academic value of general education courses’ core competencies and describes the results of a survey measuring the impact of those videos on student perception. While general education programs represent a staple of U.S. undergraduate education, enrolled students frequently misunderstand the nature and value of the programs’ core goals and or competencies. Universities are making increasing use of devices such as catalog descriptions, mission statements, course websites or blogs, and course trailer videos to communicate and clarify their general education competencies and values; however, little …

Pandemic Emotions: The Good, The Bad, And The Unconscious —Implications For Public Health, Financial Economics, Law, And Leadership, Peter H. Huang

Publications

Pandemics lead to emotions that can be good, bad, and unconscious. This Article offers an interdisciplinary analysis of how emotions during pandemics affect people’s responses to pandemics, public health, financial economics, law, and leadership. Pandemics are heart-breaking health crises. Crises produce emotions that impact decision-making. This Article analyzes how fear and anger over COVID-19 fueled anti-Asian and anti-Asian American hatred and racism. COVID-19 caused massive tragic economic, emotional, mental, physical, and psychological suffering. These difficulties are interconnected and lead to vicious cycles. Fear distorts people’s decision readiness, deliberation, information acquisition, risk perception, and thinking. Distortions affect people’s financial, health, and …

The Right To Contest Ai, Margot E. Kaminski, Jennifer M. Urban Jan 2021

The Right To Contest Ai, Margot E. Kaminski, Jennifer M. Urban

Publications

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used to make important decisions, from university admissions selections to loan determinations to the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. These uses of AI raise a host of concerns about discrimination, accuracy, fairness, and accountability.

In the United States, recent proposals for regulating AI focus largely on ex ante and systemic governance. This Article argues instead—or really, in addition—for an individual right to contest AI decisions, modeled on due process but adapted for the digital age. The European Union, in fact, recognizes such a right, and a growing number of institutions around the world now call for …

Cognitive Trajectory Of Proof By Contradiction For Transition-To-Proof Students, Darryl Chamberlain, Draga Vidakovic Jan 2021

Cognitive Trajectory Of Proof By Contradiction For Transition-To-Proof Students, Darryl Chamberlain, Draga Vidakovic

Publications

History and research on proof by contradiction suggests proof by contradiction is difficult for students in a number of ways. Students’ comprehension of already-written proofs by contradiction is one such aspect that has received relatively little attention. Applying the cognitive lens of Action-Process-Object-Schema (APOS) Theory to proof by contradiction, we constructed and tested a cognitive model that describes how a student might construct the concept ‘proof by contradiction’ in an introduction to proof course. Data for this study was collected from students in a series of five teaching interventions focused on proof by contradiction. This paper will report on two …

How To Draft An Sop?, Emily Faulconer Jan 2021

How To Draft An Sop?, Emily Faulconer

Publications

ERAU offers resources to support SOP development.

We can streamline efforts by learning from the past.

• Do not write an SOP for an individual process or action, it should be a part of the larger process.

• Disregard the first sentence if the material is so dangerous that it needs its own SOP created.

• If you are having trouble, stop and ask for assistance. The process can become frustrating.

• Be specific (what size container, slow/fast pour, what speed to mix at).

• Do not refer to other checklists if at all possible, multiple SOPs/checklists can cause errors/mistakes. …

Enabling Machine Learning On The Edge Using Sram Conserving Efficient Neural Networks Execution Approach, Bharath Sudharsan, Pankesh Patel, John G. Breslin, Muhammad Intizar Ali

Publications

Edge analytics refers to the application of data analytics and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms on IoT devices. The concept of edge analytics is gaining popularity due to its ability to perform AI-based analytics at the device level, enabling autonomous decision-making, without depending on the cloud. However, the majority of Internet of Things (IoT) devices are embedded systems with a low-cost microcontroller unit (MCU) or a small CPU as its brain, which often are incapable of handling complex ML algorithms.

In this paper, we propose an approach for the ecient execution of already deeply compressed, large neural networks (NNs) on tiny …

Semantics Of The Black-Box: Can Knowledge Graphs Help Make Deep Learning Systems More Interpretable And Explainable?, Manas Gaur, Keyur Faldu, Amit Sheth

Publications

The recent series of innovations in deep learning (DL) have shown enormous potential to impact individuals and society, both positively and negatively. The DL models utilizing massive computing power and enormous datasets have significantly outperformed prior historical benchmarks on increasingly difficult, well-defined research tasks across technology domains such as computer vision, natural language processing, signal processing, and human-computer interactions. However, the Black-Box nature of DL models and their over-reliance on massive amounts of data condensed into labels and dense representations poses challenges for interpretability and explainability of the system. Furthermore, DLs have not yet been proven in their ability to …
