Silangan Rising: Crafting The Filipino Self And The Other In The Diaspora, Jon G. Malek
Silangan Rising: Crafting The Filipino Self And The Other In The Diaspora, Jon G. Malek
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thisarticle examines the newspaper Silangan, published in Winnipeg, Canada, from February 1977 to July 1982, to analyze the negotiation of Filipino identity in the diaspora. Over its six-year run, the columns in this newspaper dealt with issues of cultural maintenance, the importance of Filipino heritage, and political engagement in their adoptive homeland. A critical dialogue argued in support of certain aspects of life from the Philippines, such as extravagant pageantry and corrupt political practices. In discursively forming a Filipino Self, this ethnic newspaper created a number of Others, the most startling of which was the (transgressing) national Filipino.KEYWORDS: FILIPINO DIASPORA …

Political Conjuncture And Scholarly Disjunctures: Reflections On Studies Of The Philippine State Under Marcos, Jr. Aguilar
Political Conjuncture And Scholarly Disjunctures: Reflections On Studies Of The Philippine State Under Marcos, Jr. Aguilar
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
This professorial address contends that a scholarly, systematic, and impartial study of Marcos’s authoritarian rule is necessary, given the highly politicized interpretations of the past bequeathed to younger generations through textbooks and social media as well as the Philippine academic community’s general inability to analyze the defunct regime and to influence public discourse and shape public history. Social scientists must tap new sources of information, such as the Marcos Papers, to produce truthful and nuanced narratives of the past, even as they must endeavor to understand the Marcosian social fantasy and the sources of Filipino authoritarianism, which can illumine both …

“Little Brown Brothers”: Height And The Philippine–American Colonial Encounter (1898–1946), Gideon; University Lasco
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thisarticle looks at how scientific racism, biomedicine, public health, sports, and a nascent bureaucracy intersected in the making of height (human stature) as an important attribute of individuals and populations during the Philippine–American colonial encounter. In relation to the “tall” Americans, Filipinos were depicted and problematized as “short,” and the attention to children’s growth, the rise of sports, and the establishment of a bureaucracy all contributed to making height a measure of health and a parameter of inclusion (and exclusion) in various domains of society.KEYWORDS: HEIGHT • ANTHROPOMETRY • PUBLIC HEALTH • COLONIALISM • PHILIPPINES
Living With The Promise Of Violence: The State And Indigenous People In A Militarized Frontier, Augusto B.; Gatmaytan
Living With The Promise Of Violence: The State And Indigenous People In A Militarized Frontier, Augusto B.; Gatmaytan
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Despite its significance in postwar Philippine history and its continuing relevance today, scholars have largely neglected militarization, especially as experienced by indigenous peoples. Drawing on fieldwork data from 2009 to 2010, thisarticle outlines a phenomenology of the terror experienced by an indigenous community in Agusan del Sur province at the hands of state paramilitary forces involving their own datu. Neil Whitehead’s “poetics of violence” is applied to the analysis of the community’s understanding of the state and its violence. It ends with reflections on the relevance of the community’s experience in relation to issues of continuing “Lumad killings” and the …

Facebook And The Intricacies Of Migrant Self-Making Among Ilonggo Ofws In South Korea, Clement C.; Camposano
Facebook And The Intricacies Of Migrant Self-Making Among Ilonggo Ofws In South Korea, Clement C.; Camposano
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thisarticle explores the diverse ways that Ilonggo-speaking male Filipino migrant workers in South Korea engage with Facebook. It studies the performance of online identities in relation to the migrants’ realities as social subjects and the technological mediation of the self and reciprocal exchange. It argues that online narratives can highlight facets of offline life that allow migrants a measure of biographical stability amid physical displacement, yet the same conditions create opportunities to negotiate competing online and offline narratives, complicating the illusion of a unified self. Online selves call for the need to reformulate Goffman’s notion of the interaction order. Keywords: overseas …
Aljamiado Hispanofilipino: The Spanish Language In Philippine Jawi Script, Isaac; Arabic Donoso
Aljamiado Hispanofilipino: The Spanish Language In Philippine Jawi Script, Isaac; Arabic Donoso
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
From the seventeenth century to the nineteenth century PhilippineMoros increasingly wrote the Spanish language in Arabic script knownas Philippine Jawi. This cultural phenomenon, which went beyond merecode switching, is illustrated through documents found in the NationalArchives of the Philippines, particularly protocols involving the Tausug andMaguindanao sultanates. The use of Spanish in Jawi documents increased, thanks to Zamboanga’s role as a cultural center in the south and Manila’sability to attract sultans politically. Jawi was also used as the scriptin language primers through the strategic work of the Jesuit JacintoJuanmartí, who originated Moro philology.KEYWORDS: ALJAMIADO • SPANISH • JAWI • MORO PHILOLOGY • …

Hegemonic Tool? Nationalism In Philippine History Textbooks, 1900–2000, Rommel A. Curaming
Hegemonic Tool? Nationalism In Philippine History Textbooks, 1900–2000, Rommel A. Curaming
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
This study analyzes fifteen history textbooks published from 1905 to 2000 to identify patterns of nationalist discourses relating to: (1) membership in the nation; (2) origins of the people; (3) national self-image; and (4) hero and heroism as exemplified by José Rizal. It finds that, across time and thematically within a given period, the patterns of discourses are generally incoherent, which indicate that the control over official history knowledge production has been less than hegemonic. Apart from weak policy implementation, this study suggests that textbooks embody a plurality of competing social forces and reflect the political dynamics of an era. Keywords: …
