Differential Effects Of Guanethidine And Reserpine On Norepinephrine In The Brain And Heart Of Male Albino Rats Subjected To Restraint, Thomas Paul Blaszkowski
Open Access Dissertations
The effect of guanethidine (1.20 mg/kg, i.p.) or reserpine (0.2 mg/kg, i.p.) has been compared on various indices of pituitary-adrenal stimulation in rats subjected to chronic forced restraint for 24 days. This was accomplished by analyzing the serum corticosterone, the adrenal ascorbic acid (AAA) and various organ weights such as the adrenals, brain and heart. Peripheral and central norepinephrine (NE) was also measured.
Chronically stressed, control rats or those treated with guanethidine demonstrated both behavioral and neurochemical adaptation. Initial excitation associated with restraint was related to changes in NE in the brain and heart. As the experiment progressed, the stressed, …

Hydromagnetic Waves In The Ionosphere: Propagation Through Inhomogeneous And Current Carrying Regions, Muhammad Abbas
Hydromagnetic Waves In The Ionosphere: Propagation Through Inhomogeneous And Current Carrying Regions, Muhammad Abbas
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation is concerned with the analysis of hydromagnetic waves which are generated in various regions of the magnetosphere and propagated to the earth in the extremely low frequency spectrum. Two different aspects of the problem are investigated, namely, propagation through inhomogeneous regions of the ionosphere and propagation and excitation of waves in current carrying regions of the ionosphere and the magnetosphere.
Propagation through inhomogeneous regions is studied by two different methods. With the first met hod, transmission coefficients for hydromagnetic waves are obtained in terms of Airy integral functions by assuming a linearly varying inhomogeneous region. Simplified expressions are …

Toxicology Of Muconomycins A And B: Inflammatory Properties Of Two New Antibiotics: Electrolyte And Protein Characterization Of Inflammatory Exudate And Production Of A Model State Of Ascites In Male Albino Rats, Anthony Michael Guarino
Open Access Dissertations
Toxicological investigations were conducted on two new antibiotics, Muconomycin A and Muconomycin B. These nonnitrogenous antibiotics were found to be highly toxic and capable of inducing profound inflammation in the peritoneal cavity of male albino rats. Either antibiotic produced large volumes \10-20 ml) of inflammatory exudate even when injected (i.p.) in quantities of 1.6 x 10-10 moles. An extensive profile of the electrolytes and proteins found in inflammatory exudates was developed./ Simultaneous assays of the blood serum of treated rats provided a basis for comparing the concentrations of constituents of serum with those of the exudate./ This approach to the …
The Effects Of Selected Variables On The Microencapsulation Of Solids, Louis A. Luzzi
The Effects Of Selected Variables On The Microencapsulation Of Solids, Louis A. Luzzi
Open Access Dissertations
The hypothesis that solid particles may be encapsulated by coacervation led to the investigation of the extractability of microcapsules, which contained solids, by gastrointestinal fluids. Starting pH, starting temperature, ratio of solid to encapsulating materials, quantity of denaturant, and final pH were varied. In addition a surfactant and dispersant were added to selected series. The effects of the variables and additives on microcapsules were determined by submitting samples to simulated gastrointestinal fluids for periods of up to two and one-half hours and then comparing the extracts spectrophotometrically to know absorption spectra. Results showed that all variables and additives effected some …

The Mechanism Of The Energy-Linked Incorporation Of C14dpn Into Rat Liver Mitochondria, Michael D. Greenspan
The Mechanism Of The Energy-Linked Incorporation Of C14dpn Into Rat Liver Mitochondria, Michael D. Greenspan
Open Access Dissertations
Isolated mitochondria perform certain processes which require energy. The maintainance of mitochondrial structure and function by endergonic biosynthetic reactions requires
energy in the form of ATP. Other energy-linked functions of mitochondria, -cation uptake, swelling and contraction, reversal of electron transport, and reduction of TPN by DPNH have been used as tools by investigators to study the transfer of energy between coupling sites and the nature of high-energy intermediates in oxidative phosphorylation.
It has also become clear that the concept of the role of ATP as the sole energetic reaction product of mitochondrial reactions has changed. A good deal of evidence …
