Liver Enlargement And The Modification Of Hepatic Microsomal Drug Metabolism By Pyrethrum, Angela Caretta Springfield
Liver Enlargement And The Modification Of Hepatic Microsomal Drug Metabolism By Pyrethrum, Angela Caretta Springfield
Open Access Dissertations
Liver enlargement in rats resulting from oral administration of pyrethrum has been observed in various laboratories. This study was undertaken to investigate the nature of this enlargement as well as resulting changes in hepatic drug metabolism. Oral administration of pyrethrum at 200 mg/kg for 13 or 23 days resulted in decreases in hepatic DNA concentrations. While total lipid concentrations were increased significantly, the increases did not account for the enlargement. Protein concentrations of whole liver homogenates, 9,000 x g supernatants and the 105,000 x g pellet were not different from controls. No significant changes occurred in hepatic water concentrations. Accompanying …

The solubility of four sulfonamides in normal alcohols and in buffered aqueous systems was determined at 25°, 30° and 37° Centigrade. The solubility pathway for a nonelectrolyte solute can be described by a process which follows a two -step sequence:
Solid/solute -- 1 --> liquid/solute -- 2 --> solute in solution.
The pathway was assumed operative for the solute-solvent systems studied, and was used as a basis for the interpretation of the thermodynamic quantities associated with the dissolution process. Heats of solution and their corresponding entropies were evaluated by semilog plots of mole fraction solute concentration versus reciprocal temperature (degrees …

The Measurement Of Wind Generated Waves In The Deep Ocean, Alfred Henry Barrett
The Measurement Of Wind Generated Waves In The Deep Ocean, Alfred Henry Barrett
Open Access Dissertations
Instrumentation, a stable oceanographic platform, and a data acquisition system were constructed and utilized to record wind driven ocean waves. Wave data were processed, and the results which are presented are used in a comparative study of wave recording techniques.
A system of capacitive wave staffs which indicates direct surface displacement, a dynamic pressure sensor which indicates wave height by sensing the hydrostatic pressure slightly below the ocean surface, and a microthermal probe which indicates small scale and rapid temperature fluctuations were developed. Also used in the study was a ducted impeller current meter which indicates water particle velocity. Thus …
Effect Of Acute Hypoxia Or Chronic Social Isolation On Brain Sensitivity And Barbiturate Metabolism, Irwin Paul Baumel
Effect Of Acute Hypoxia Or Chronic Social Isolation On Brain Sensitivity And Barbiturate Metabolism, Irwin Paul Baumel
Open Access Dissertations
The mechanisms by which hypoxia or social isolation interact with drug action were investigated by the use of several parameters including drug-induced narcosis, convulsions, change in body temperature and various biochemical parameters.
Acute Hypoxia
Hypobaric hypoxia (364 mm Hg, 10% O2) enhanced. the depressant effects of barbital, pentobarbital and chloral hydrate in mice and rats. Mice were far more sensitive than rats, barbital narcosis being affected to the greatest extent. Reduced oxygen (10%) at normal pressure also potentiated pentobarbital narcosis.
Hypothermia during hypoxia was greater in mice than in rats. Mice exposed to hypoxia at 30°C instead of …
The Solubility Of Amino Acids In Various Solvent Systems, Thomas E. Needham
The Solubility Of Amino Acids In Various Solvent Systems, Thomas E. Needham
Open Access Dissertations
The effect of varying solvent systems on the solubilities of glycine, L-alanine, L-valine, L-phenylalanine, and DL-aminooctanoic acid at z50 C. was studied. The entire concentration spectrum from pure water to pure semipolar solvent was used for each of. the solvent systems of methanol-water, ethanol-water, n-propanol water, isopropanol-water, and tertiary butanol-water. Further, the effect of pH variation on the solubilities of the amino acids in each of the solvent systems was studied. Aliquots were withdrawn from each solvent system studied and analyzed gravimetrically to determine the resultant solubility. It was found that the solubility behavior of those amino acids studied was …
