Human Pharmacokinetics Of 5-Formyl Tetrahydrofolate, Bruce Kenneth Birmingham Jan 1981

Human Pharmacokinetics Of 5-Formyl Tetrahydrofolate, Bruce Kenneth Birmingham

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetics of calcium leucovorin in normal subjects and in patients undergoing High-Dose methotrexame therapy for the treatment of neoplastic disease. By characterizing the disposition of leucovorin it was hoped that the efficacy of the aethotrexate therapy might be improved, while at the same time, the incidence of toxicity could be diminished.

An assay for the separation and quantification of leucovorin in serum was developed. The reduced folate vas extracted from serum using reverse-phase chromatographic minicolumns and a paired-ion reagent. Leucovorin was eluted from this system in methanol and evaporated to dryness …

The Distribution And Biogeochemistry Of Transition Metal - Organic Complexes In Marine Waters, Alfred Kenneth Hanson Jr. Jan 1981

The Distribution And Biogeochemistry Of Transition Metal - Organic Complexes In Marine Waters, Alfred Kenneth Hanson Jr.

Open Access Dissertations

This thesis addresses certain problems in chemical oceanography that pertain to. the chemical speciation of transition metals dissolved in seawater. Knowledge of the chemical speciation of dissolved trace metals is important for understanding their role in various biogeochemical processes. Historically, the concept that dissolved organic matter (DOM) may complex metal ions in seawater has often influenced interpretation of observations in the oceanography disciplines. Unfortunately, the extent of metal complexation and the nature of the organic ligands involved are poorly understood. This thesis involves an investigation of the interaction between DOM and dissolved transition metals, particularly copper, in marine waters.

Quasi-Lagrangian Signatures Of The North Atlantic Circulation, Stephen C. Riser Jan 1981

Quasi-Lagrangian Signatures Of The North Atlantic Circulation, Stephen C. Riser

Open Access Dissertations

A large body of quasi-Lagrangian trajectory (SOFAR float) data collected from 1976-1979 from 700 m and 2000 min the western North Atlantic is examined, and it is shown that the character of the trajectories varies markedly over regions as small as a few degrees of latitude and longitude. Kinetic energy increases to the north and west, towards the Gulf Stream at both levels, and at both levels the region in the vicinity of 28°N, 70°W appears to be locally a minimum of kinetic energy.

At very low temporal frequencies the trajectories indicate that zonal motions are larger than meridional ones …

The Relationship Of Social Problem Soliving To High School Preformance, Barry Alan Plummer Jan 1981

The Relationship Of Social Problem Soliving To High School Preformance, Barry Alan Plummer

Open Access Dissertations

This research project is undertaken to explore the relationship between social problem solving and the academic and social performance of high school youth. Psychologists have stated that social problem solving is an important component of psychosocial competence. Similarly, both theory and research have linked social problem solving to overt behavioral adjustment to school in populations of young children. In this study, the broader notion that academic and social performance in high school will be strongly related to social problem solving was tested.

A total sample of 128 male and female students from grades 9 - 12, from selected classes and …

The Child's Adjustment And Development Following The Death Of A Parent: A Critical Analysis Of The Research And Its Implications, Ellen B. Berlinsky Jan 1981

The Child's Adjustment And Development Following The Death Of A Parent: A Critical Analysis Of The Research And Its Implications, Ellen B. Berlinsky

Open Access Dissertations

A model for evaluating studies was developed, based on standards for methodological adequacy of empirical investigations and critiques of reviewers of the parental bereavement literature, in order to determine whether or not there are immediate or long term differences between individuals who experience the death of a parent during childhood and those who do not ~ The assessment model which included a five point scale for rating studies, was applied to research conducted primarily from 1960-1980. Much of the research was found to be methodologically flawed, with fewer than half the studies judged to be minimally acceptable. The methodologically adequate …

The Effects Of Hue And Lightness Upon Color Preference And Their Relationship To Five Manifest Needs, Elaine Puntch Gelineau Jan 1980

The Effects Of Hue And Lightness Upon Color Preference And Their Relationship To Five Manifest Needs, Elaine Puntch Gelineau

Open Access Dissertations

A three-part investigation was conducted in an effort to begin to understand the psychological meaning of color preference behavior. Phase 1 used a Q-sort technique to assess intraindividual stability of preference judgments over a five-week interval. Phase 2 used principal components analysis to discern the manner in which preference judgments were being made. Phase 3 used canonical correlation analysis to evaluate a hypothesized relationship between color preference and personality; with five scales from the Personality Research Form, purported to measure manifest needs, serving as the criterion measure. Munsell standard papers, a standard light source, and a screening test for color …

An Investigation Of Grief And Adaptation In Parents Whose Children Have Died From Cancer, Therese Ann Rando Jan 1980

An Investigation Of Grief And Adaptation In Parents Whose Children Have Died From Cancer, Therese Ann Rando

Open Access Dissertations

In an effort to investigate parental experience and adaptation to a child's terminal illness, fifty-four parents (twenty-seven married couples) were administered a structured interview and two objective instruments: the Grief Experience Inventory (Sanders et al. 1978) and the Parental Experience Assessment Form (Rando 1979) from two months to three years following the death of their · child from cancer. The parental grief experience was analyzed with respect to the variables of: support received during the illness, the influence of previous loss, the length of the child's illness, the length of time since the death, the sex of the parent, the …
