Moral Injury In Contemporary Ethics: The Application Of A Socratic Idea, Heleana Theixos
Moral Injury In Contemporary Ethics: The Application Of A Socratic Idea, Heleana Theixos
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation is an investigation of the Socratic moral claim that being a moral wrongdoer is worse for the wrongdoer than it is for the victim. Chapter One investigates this moral claim in the context of Plato’s Gorgias and the historical Gorgias’ Encomium of Helen. Chapter Two brings the ancient conception into contemporary ethics into a typology of what the ancient concept looks like in contemporary ethics. Chapter Three prepares for an investigation of a certain moral wrongdoer, the military interrogator/ torturer and wrongdoing, by first examining a standard torture hypothetical, the Ticking Time Bomb. All three chapters work together …
Identification And Characterization Of The Molecular Determinants Of The Anterior-Posterior Axis In The Sea Urchin Embryo, Lingyu Wang
Open Access Dissertations
How the embryonic body axis emerges from a seemingly symmetrical egg and is subsequently patterned during embryogenesis is one of the most fundamental questions in developmental biology. It is now clear that localized activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway plays a conserved role in primary body axis formation and/or endoderm/endomesoderm specification during embryo development of phylogenetically diverse animal species. In sea urchin embryos, recent experimental evidence has shown that Dishevelled (Dsh), a central hub protein in the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, is asymmetrically enriched and differentially modified in a vegetal cortical domain (VCD) of the unfertilized egg. Experimental evidence has also shown …
Examining The Lionfish Invasion: How Growth And Recruitment Relates To Connectivity And Controls, Dominique Lazarre
Examining The Lionfish Invasion: How Growth And Recruitment Relates To Connectivity And Controls, Dominique Lazarre
Open Access Dissertations
The global nature of travel and trade has increased the potential for the spread of invasive species around the world. These invasive alien species (IAS) have the potential to negatively influence the ecosystems they invade by preying upon, infecting or out-competing native species or altering their new habitat. The invasion of two Indo-Pacific lionfishes, Pterois volitans and Pterois miles, is having far reaching impacts on reef fish biodiversity and abundance throughout the Tropical Western Atlantic Ocean. The body of lionfish research from their native range is composed of studies related to their biology or behaviors in aquarium settings. These deficiencies …
Homo-Oligomerization Of The Gβ5-Rgs7 Complex And Its Regulation By R7bp And G Protein Activation, Junior Tayou
Homo-Oligomerization Of The Gβ5-Rgs7 Complex And Its Regulation By R7bp And G Protein Activation, Junior Tayou
Open Access Dissertations
G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) mediate the transmission of extracellular signals to generate specific intracellular responses that are crucial for most physiological processes. Timely inactivation of GPCR signal is facilitated by regulators of G-protein signaling (RGS) proteins. This dissertation was focused on the R7 subfamily of RGS proteins. The R7 proteins which include RGS6, RGS7, RGS9 and RGS11 are multi-domain proteins consisting of the RGS, GGL (Gγ-like), DEP (originally identified in Disheveled, EGL-10, and Pleckstrin) and DHEX (DEP helical extension) domains. This subfamily exists as obligate dimers with the atypical Gβ subunit, Gβ5. These complexes are highly expressed in neurons and …
Error Resilient Video Coding Using Bitstream Syntax And Iterative Microscopy Image Segmentation, Neeraj Jayant Gadgil
Error Resilient Video Coding Using Bitstream Syntax And Iterative Microscopy Image Segmentation, Neeraj Jayant Gadgil
Open Access Dissertations
There has been a dramatic increase in the amount of video traffic over the Internet in past several years. For applications like real-time video streaming and video conferencing, retransmission of lost packets is often not permitted. Popular video coding standards such as H.26x and VPx make use of spatial-temporal correlations for compression, typically making compressed bitstreams vulnerable to errors. We propose several adaptive spatial-temporal error concealment approaches for subsampling-based multiple description video coding. These adaptive methods are based on motion and mode information extracted from the H.26x video bitstreams. We also present an error resilience method using data duplication in …
The Use Of Stable Isotopes And Particulate Matter In The Investigation Of Local And Regional Atmospheric Chemistry, Tanya Lynn Katzman
The Use Of Stable Isotopes And Particulate Matter In The Investigation Of Local And Regional Atmospheric Chemistry, Tanya Lynn Katzman
Open Access Dissertations
The chemical composition of particulate matter (PM), a known contributor to air pollution, is highly variable, and elemental analysis reveals information about local and regional sources, as well as how air masses and climate influence PM compositions. Seasonal changes in climate, such as temperature, amount of daylight, or meteorological patterns influence source emissions (increased residential heating activities, decreased natural soil emissions) and the relative importance of certain chemical pathways in the atmosphere. Since the magnitude of these seasonal changes are highly dependent on location, each sampling site is unique and the chemical composition of PM provides valuable insight into local …

Purpose: The long-term goal of this research is to determine the feasibility of using near infra-red light to stimulate drug release in metastatic lesions within the brain. In this work, we focused on developing the tools needed to quantify and verify photon fluence distribution in biological tissue. To accomplish this task, an optical dosimetry probe and Monte Carlo based simulation code were fabricated, calibrated and developed to predict light transport in heterogeneous tissue phantoms of the skull and brain. Empirical model (EM) of photon transport using CT images as input were devised to provide real-time calculations capable of being translated …
Protein Lc-Ms Using Slip Flow Chromatography, Ximo Zhang
Protein Lc-Ms Using Slip Flow Chromatography, Ximo Zhang
Open Access Dissertations
Histones are essential chromosomal proteins with large numbers of variants and post-translational modifications (PTMs). PTM levels of histones are known to correlate with different stages of cancer. Due to the lack of resolution on intact histone separations, conventional methods for histone analysis require time-consuming digestion, which often leads to the loss of PTM information. Slip flow chromatography with orderly packed nonporous silica particles has been shown to greatly increase the efficiency of protein separation by reducing eddy diffusion and resistance to mass transfer. In this work, higher resolution for intact histones separation was achieved by using a 5 cm capillary …
Investigation Of An Energetic Coupling Between Ligand Binding And Protein Folding, Nathan W. Gardner
Investigation Of An Energetic Coupling Between Ligand Binding And Protein Folding, Nathan W. Gardner
Open Access Dissertations
The cellular environment presents a protein with many small molecules with which it may interact. Many novel interactions between proteins and non-substrate metabolites are being uncovered through proteome-wide screens. The homodimeric Escherichia coli cofactor-dependant phosphoglycerate mutase (dPGM) was identified as an ATP binding protein in a proteome-wide screen, but dPGM does not use ATP for catalysis. This dissertation elucidates the effect of ATP and other non-substrate metabolites on dPGM. Initial investigations revealed a partially unfolded, monomeric intermediate of dPGM that forms during equilibrium unfolding. ATP binding was found to occur at the active site of dPGM and to be energetically …
Understanding The Mechanism For Response Selection In Compatibility Tasks: Referential Coding Contrasted With Biological Properties Of The Hands, Nicole M. Murchison
Understanding The Mechanism For Response Selection In Compatibility Tasks: Referential Coding Contrasted With Biological Properties Of The Hands, Nicole M. Murchison
Open Access Dissertations
Several researchers have hypothesized that the hands have unique effects on visual attentional resources and performance in response-selection tasks. This hand-specific processing hypothesis – that biological properties of the hands/palms uniquely affect visual attention and response selection – can be compared to a referential object coding hypothesis – that objects are coded in relation to other salient objects – favored in explanations of many compatibility effects. To test implications of these accounts, and specific effects that the hands (or general referential objects) have on attentional prioritization, I had participants perform three compatibility tasks using the hands or wooden blocks as …
Organizing Historical Agricultural Data And Identifying Data Integrity Zones To Assess Agricultural Data Quality, Elizabeth Marie Hawkins
Organizing Historical Agricultural Data And Identifying Data Integrity Zones To Assess Agricultural Data Quality, Elizabeth Marie Hawkins
Open Access Dissertations
As precision agriculture transitions into decision agriculture, data driven decision- making has become the focus of the industry and data quality will be increasingly important. Traditionally, yield data cleaning techniques have removed individual data points based on criteria primarily focused on the yield values. However, when these methods are used, the underlying causes of the errors are often overlooked and as a result, these techniques may fail to remove all of the inaccurate data or remove “good” data. As part of this research, an alternative to data cleaning was developed. Data integrity zones (DIZ) within each field were identified by …
Intestinal Cytoplasmic Lipid Droplets, Associated Proteins, And The Regulation Of Dietary Fat Absorption, Theresa M. D'Aquila
Intestinal Cytoplasmic Lipid Droplets, Associated Proteins, And The Regulation Of Dietary Fat Absorption, Theresa M. D'Aquila
Open Access Dissertations
Dietary fat provides essential nutrients, contributes to energy balance, and regulates blood lipid concentrations. These functions are important to health, but can also become dysregulated and contribute to diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The small intestine absorbs dietary fat through an efficient multi step process of digestion, uptake, metabolism, and secretion or storage. When dietary fat is taken up by the absorptive cells of the small intestine, enterocytes, it can be secreted into circulation where it contributes to blood lipid levels or temporarily stored in cytoplasmic lipid droplets (CLDs). The objective of this dissertation is to investigate …
Evaluating The Two-Stage Ditch As A New Best Management Practice, Andi Hodaj
Evaluating The Two-Stage Ditch As A New Best Management Practice, Andi Hodaj
Open Access Dissertations
A two-stage ditch involves modifications of a traditional drainage ditch to resemble more the features of a natural stream. The idea is to create or simulate extended benches on both sides of the ditch that would develop naturally over a period of time in a stream because of geomorphological processes. Previous research in Indiana and Ohio has shown that two-stage ditches offer the potential to reduce sediment load and extend the interaction time between water and vegetation on the benches allowing larger uptake of nutrients from the vegetation on the extended benches, and increasing the denitrification rates in the bench …
Intestinal Adaptation To Repeated Exposure Of Flavonoid-Rich Foods: In Vitro And Clinical Data, Bejamin W. Redan
Intestinal Adaptation To Repeated Exposure Of Flavonoid-Rich Foods: In Vitro And Clinical Data, Bejamin W. Redan
Open Access Dissertations
Interest in application of flavonoids for chronic disease prevention has grown significantly, but the low oral bioavailability of these compounds from acute doses is commonly highlighted as a limitation when considering their biological significance. Still, the impact of broad dietary patterns such as repeated exposure on flavonoid’s absorption, metabolism, and eventual efficacy is critical to consider since evidence suggests that their bioavailability may be enhanced with repeated exposure. To fill this gap in knowledge, this dissertation will focus on three major areas including characterization of flavonoid metabolites, in addition to use of in vitro models and clinical work to test …
The Role Of Mechanical Loading In Chondrocyte Signaling Pathways, Qiaoqiao Wan
The Role Of Mechanical Loading In Chondrocyte Signaling Pathways, Qiaoqiao Wan
Open Access Dissertations
Chondrocytes are a predominant cell type present in articular cartilage, whose integrity is jeopardized in joint degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis (OA). In the chondrocytes of patients with OA, the elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 1β (IL1β) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) have been reported. These cytokines contribute to degradation of cartilage matrix by increasing activities of proteolytic enzymes. In addition to their contribution to proteolytic enzymes, these cytokines adversely affect anabolic activity of chondrocytes by inhibiting the production of proteoglycans and type II collagen. Therefore, blocking the action of these cytokines is a potential strategy …

Nanoparticle-Based Electrochemical Sensors For The Detection Of Lactate And Hydrogen Peroxide, Aytekin Uzunoglu
Open Access Dissertations
In the present study, electrochemical sensors for the detection of lactate and hydrogen peroxide were constructed by exploiting the physicochemical properties of metal ad metal oxide nanoparticles. This study can be divided into two main sections. While chapter 2, 3, and 4 report on the construction of electrochemical lactate biosensors using CeO2 and CeO2-based mixed metal oxide nanoparticles, chapter 5 and 6 show the development of electrochemical hydrogen peroxide sensors by the decoration of the electrode surface with palladium-based nanoparticles. First generation oxidase enzyme-based sensors suffer from oxygen dependency which results in errors in the response current of the sensors …
Mitigating Prevalence And Persistence Of L. Monocytogenes Using Novel Sanitation Strategies In Delis, Susan Rose Hammons
Mitigating Prevalence And Persistence Of L. Monocytogenes Using Novel Sanitation Strategies In Delis, Susan Rose Hammons
Open Access Dissertations
Ready-to-eat (RTE) deli meats sliced at retail are predicted to cause 83% of deli meat-associated listeriosis cases annually. While L. monocytogenes is commonly found in delis (55-90%), environmental prevalence varies by store (0-40%). Study 1 evaluated efficacy of 10 standardized SSOPs by testing 28 food and non-food contact surfaces for L. monocytogenes over 6 months in 30 retail delis. Intervention strategies employed in this study significantly decreased L. monocytogenesprevalence on FCS and NFCS in stores with moderate prevalence (0.5%, 0.8% reduction). However, we found that L. monocytogenes could persist despite implementation of SSOP control strategies. Study 2 assessed an …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Application Of Magnetic Gold Nanoclusters, Naveen Reddy Kadasala
Open Access Dissertations
Au–Fe3O4 nanocomposites are of great interest for technological reasons due to their combined optical and magnetic properties. Nanosized Fe3O4 particles are superparamagnetic and can also be coated with a layer of Au, which supports localized plasmon resonances for useful optical properties. The dual properties of Au–Fe3O 4 nanoparticles have inspired chemists to design a variety of synthetic routes, some with good control of overall shape and size. However, most approaches require organic solvents, surfactants, or harsh chemical conditions. In this thesis we describe a simple and highly reproducible synthesis of magnetically active gold nanoclusters (MGNCs) with average particle sizes under …

Ion–molecule reactions in a flowing afterglow are used to examine the electronic structure of 3- and 4-pyridinylnitrene-n-oxide radical anions. Reactions with nitric oxide are generally similar to those reported previously for other aromatic nitrene radical anions. In particular, phenoxide formation by nitrogen–oxygen exchange is observed with both isomers. Oxygen atom abstraction by NO is also observed with both isomers. Very significant differences in the reactivity are observed in the reactions of the two isomers with carbon disulfide. The reactivity of the 3-noxide isomer with CS2 is similar to that observed previously for nitrene radical anions, and reactions of the n-oxide …
Influence Of Stormwater Control Measures On Watershed Hydrology And Biogeochemical Cycling, Colin D. Bell
Influence Of Stormwater Control Measures On Watershed Hydrology And Biogeochemical Cycling, Colin D. Bell
Open Access Dissertations
Urban development replaces vegetation with impervious surfaces and natural drainage channels with pipe networks that quicken flow paths and alter hydrologic regimes. Additionally, the import of food, application of fertilizer to lawns and gardens, and heightened atmospheric deposition increases nutrient availability in urban landscapes. These excess nutrients are ultimately routed to streams through the pipe networks before it can be processed by the vegetation and microorganisms of the landscape. This combination of physical and chemical disturbances impacts stream ecosystems and degrades their ability to perform valuable services such as removal of nutrients, degradation of pollutants, and provision of recreational and …

Thematic Analysis Of Influencers On Continuing Professional Learning Of Tenure Track Engineering Faculty As Assistant Professors At An Ru/Vh Institution, James Edwin Cawthorne
Open Access Dissertations
“Although the need for lifelong learning of professionals is stressed through university education, the patent differences between learning as a student, within a controlled framework focusing on accessible outcomes, and learning as a professional have not been clarified” (Webster-Wright, 2009, p. 708). Assistant professors are entry level professionals in academia who been prepared through their extensive education process to be lifelong learners and yet it is unknown how these assistant professors are engaging, or being engaged by others, in continuing their professional learning (CPL) for short-term and long-term success in academia as a career. This study aimed to understand who …

Influence Of Dietary Component Manipulation And Feed Management Strategies On Growth And Rumen Development Of Weaned Dairy Heifers, Tana Shea Dennis
Open Access Dissertations
Well-developed replacement heifers provide a central foundation for the continued success of the dairy industry. Emphasis on improving pre-weaned calf nutrition has predominated in the industry, but opportunities exist to improve post-weaning heifer nutrition and management. We aimed to evaluate common feed management strategies seen in the industry and their effects on growth, feed efficiency (G:F), and rumen development of calves from birth to 8 mo of age using pen- and individually-fed animal trials. Little information exists regarding post-weaning performance and rumen development of calves fed conventional or high planes of nutrition pre-weaning; therefore, we evaluated two milk replacer feeding …
Investigation Of Digital Pump/Motor Control Strategies, Farid El Breidi
Investigation Of Digital Pump/Motor Control Strategies, Farid El Breidi
Open Access Dissertations
A pump is the heart of fluid power systems, it has a significant impact on the efficiency of many fluid power systems. Motors are the most common rotary actuators in fluid power systems. State-of-the-art pump/motor units can achieve efficiencies higher than 90% when operating at maximum displacement; however, as the displacement drops, the efficiency of these units drops to below 50%. A new digital pump/motor design aims at increasing these efficiencies by utilizing two electrically controlled high speed on/off valves per displacement chamber; these valves provide the ability to achieve variable displacement and allow freedom in choosing operating strategies. Such …
The Effects Of Including Almonds In An Energy-Restricted Diet On Weight, Body Composition, Visceral Adipose Tissue, Blood Pressure And Cognitive Function, Jaapna Dhillon
Open Access Dissertations
Inclusion of almonds in an energy restricted diet has been reported to enhance or have no effect on weight loss. Their effects specifically on visceral fat stores during energy restriction have not been widely examined. Additionally, almond consumption has been associated with reduced blood pressure, but whether this is linked to or is independent of changes of body composition has not been examined. Moreover, almond consumption during energy restriction may be an effective strategy for reversing the negative effects of dieting on cognitive performance. The unique nutrient profile of almonds also has the potential to influence cognitive function post-prandially. The …

Ultraviolet And Infrared Spectroscopy Of Synthetic Foldamers, Aib Homopeptides, And Solvated 1,2-Diphenylethane In The Gas Phase, Joseph R. Gord
Open Access Dissertations
The work presented here implements a supersonic jet expansion source to funnel the population of model peptides and solvated-bichromophore clusters into their low lying structural minima and to collisionally cool these minima to their respective zero-point vibrational levels. Single-conformation ultraviolet and infrared spectroscopy techniques are then used to probe these systems and investigate their electronic properties and uncover their intrinsic conformational preferences in the gas phase.
Model β/γ-peptides known as synthetic foldamers and aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) homopeptides incorporate structural constraints that are designed/known to impose particular structural motifs. Here the ability of a β/γ-dipeptide to replicate the backbone length of …
Graphical Methods In Rna Structure Matching, Jiajie Huang
Graphical Methods In Rna Structure Matching, Jiajie Huang
Open Access Dissertations
Eukaryotic genomes are pervasively transcribed; almost every base can be found in an RNA transcript. This is a surprising observation since most of the genome does not encode proteins. This RNA must serve an important regulatory function – important because producing non-coding RNA is an energy intensive process, and in the absence of strong selection one would expect it to disappear.
RNA families with common functions have specifically conserved structural motifs, which are directly related to the functional roles of RNA in catalysis and regulation. Because the conserved structures depend on base-pairing, similar RNA structures may have little or no …
Computational Labeling, Partitioning, And Balancing Of Molecular Networks, Biaobin Jiang
Computational Labeling, Partitioning, And Balancing Of Molecular Networks, Biaobin Jiang
Open Access Dissertations
Recent advances in high throughput techniques enable large-scale molecular quantification with high accuracy, including mRNAs, proteins and metabolites. Differential expression of these molecules in case and control samples provides a way to select phenotype-associated molecules with statistically significant changes. However, given the significance ranking list of molecular changes, how those molecules work together to drive phenotype formation is still unclear. In particular, the changes in molecular quantities are insufficient to interpret the changes in their functional behavior. My study is aimed at answering this question by integrating molecular network data to systematically model and estimate the changes of molecular functional …
Biochemical Changes In Animal Models Of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Christine E. M. Keller
Biochemical Changes In Animal Models Of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Christine E. M. Keller
Open Access Dissertations
Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a completely preventable disease, that has profound effects on life-long health and function of the affected individual. Prevalence estimates of FASD in the United States indicate 33.5 per 1,000 live births are affected with this disorder (Roozen, 2016). FASD is caused by maternal ethanol intake during pregnancy. However, recommendations of the amounts of alcohol safe to drink during pregnancy are not established. Further, we lack a comprehensive understanding of the biochemical pathways modified in prenatal ethanol exposure. Biomarkers are also lacking. Our results demonstrate the vast array of biochemical pathways modified in the chronic …
Synthetic Studies Of Heparan Derivatives: Glycosyl Couplings And Post-Glycosylative Modifications, Hari Raj Khatri
Synthetic Studies Of Heparan Derivatives: Glycosyl Couplings And Post-Glycosylative Modifications, Hari Raj Khatri
Open Access Dissertations
Heparan sulfate (HS) and closely related heparin are comprised of alternating units of D-glucosamine and either D-glucuronic acid (D-GluA) or L-iduronic acid (L-IdoA), and support variable degrees of sulfation which can interact with a large number of proteins with diverse biological functions. HS oligosaccharides can be constructed from readily accessible D-GlcN and D-GlcA derivatives, but the inclusion of L-IdoA is less straightforward. To address this, our laboratory has developed alternative synthetic strategies for HS-like oligosaccharides to incorporate either D-GlcA or L-IdoA in a synthetically efficient manner by nucleophilic ring opening of 4-epoxypyranosides, which can be made from readily available D-hexoses …
Controlling For Confounding Network Properties In Hypothesis Testing And Anomaly Detection, Timothy La Fond
Controlling For Confounding Network Properties In Hypothesis Testing And Anomaly Detection, Timothy La Fond
Open Access Dissertations
An important task in network analysis is the detection of anomalous events in a network time series. These events could merely be times of interest in the network timeline or they could be examples of malicious activity or network malfunction. Hypothesis testing using network statistics to summarize the behavior of the network provides a robust framework for the anomaly detection decision process. Unfortunately, choosing network statistics that are dependent on confounding factors like the total number of nodes or edges can lead to incorrect conclusions (e.g., false positives and false negatives). In this dissertation we describe the challenges that face …
