Toxicology Of Muconomycins A And B: Inflammatory Properties Of Two New Antibiotics: Electrolyte And Protein Characterization Of Inflammatory Exudate And Production Of A Model State Of Ascites In Male Albino Rats, Anthony Michael Guarino

Toxicological investigations were conducted on two new antibiotics, Muconomycin A and Muconomycin B. These nonnitrogenous antibiotics were found to be highly toxic and capable of inducing profound inflammation in the peritoneal cavity of male albino rats. Either antibiotic produced large volumes \10-20 ml) of inflammatory exudate even when injected (i.p.) in quantities of 1.6 x 10-10 moles. An extensive profile of the electrolytes and proteins found in inflammatory exudates was developed./ Simultaneous assays of the blood serum of treated rats provided a basis for comparing the concentrations of constituents of serum with those of the exudate./ This approach to the …

Isolated mitochondria perform certain processes which require energy. The maintainance of mitochondrial structure and function by endergonic biosynthetic reactions requires
energy in the form of ATP. Other energy-linked functions of mitochondria, -cation uptake, swelling and contraction, reversal of electron transport, and reduction of TPN by DPNH have been used as tools by investigators to study the transfer of energy between coupling sites and the nature of high-energy intermediates in oxidative phosphorylation.
It has also become clear that the concept of the role of ATP as the sole energetic reaction product of mitochondrial reactions has changed. A good deal of evidence …

Fairy Rings caused by Marasmius oreades Fr. and other fungi cause considerable damage to turfgrasses. The recommended control measures for this disease are either soil fumigation or digging up the affected turf and replacing it with noninfested soil. Both methods require subsequent reseeding or resodding of the area. Results of two years' experimentation indicate that chemical control of fairy ring disease is not practical at the present. Hence, the possibilities of biological control were explored.
This investigation has shown that Pythium aartotrogus and other Pythium species will inhibit the mycelial growth of M. oreades and Agaricus bisporus. Pythium artotrogus …
