This thesis consists of a study of the relationship between trace metal chemistry and the carbon dioxide system in the marine environment. The distribution and speciation of several metals with an emphasis on manganese were studied to evaluate the effect of carbon dioxide system, water composition and biological processes. Seawater samples collected in January 1984 along the continental shelf and slope off Peru between latitude 10 to 11°S and longtitude 78 to 79°W were used for this study.

This thesis consists of three studies related to trace-metal marine geochemistry. The first investigation deals with the distribution of iron in the Northwest Atlantic. The second portion is a study comprising a series of physicochemical laboratory measurements aimed at characterization of the heterogeneous equilibrium of malachite (Cu₂(OH)₂CO₃). This work is presented in two reports. The first deals with the experimental results in terms of equilibrium constants and related thermodynamic parameters while the second addresses the geochemical significance of these findings. The present investigation was designed to extend the research on cognitive and social factors predicting both pattern of enrollment in mathematics courses across the high school years and twelfth grade mathematical aptitude test scores among women and men. A total of 226 seniors enrolled in a high school located in an upper-class neighborhood in New England volunteered to participate and completed a booklet containing: a student consent form, the Attitudes toward Mathematics Scales (Fennema & Sherman, 1976), the Agency and Communion Competency Scale (White, 1979), and a background questionnaire.
