Historically, comparison groups of children from low socioeconomic status (SES) have done less well on intelligence tests than their more well-to-do counterparts. This study was undertaken to explore the contribution of verbal ability to general intelligence and to consider the possibility of developmental change in the relative contributions of the verbal and performance scales. The analyses used verbal, performance, and full scale scores of a subgroup of the standardization sample of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - Third Edition (WISC-III). This study examined the relationship between at-birth risk factors and three year child developmental outcome. The purpose of this study was to design a multifactor risk screening system to identify those children who are at risk for developmental delay and behavior problems in Rhode Island. The sample was drawn from three separate datasets: the Rhode Island Universal Newborn Screening (Level One) database (N=27,282), the Early Intervention (El) database (N=l ,793), and the Maternal Lifestyle Study Providence/Teen samples (N= 311). Blood glucose (BG) estimation is an important part of maintaining euglycemia in individuals with diabetes. Interventions to increase accuracy were designed without taking into account the natural effects of practice. The current study investigated the effects of naturalistic practice on BG estimation accuracy. Latent growth curve modeling (LGCM) was used to analyze data from 43 children with insulin dependent diabetes. LGCM consists of two stages. In the first stage, a growth curve was fit to the repeated measures of each individual in the sample. Results indicated that the true growth trajectory was curvilinear, and best represented by a quadratic function. …

Experience with racism and its relationship to meaning in life (i.e., the degree to which a person feels the world is a safe and caring place), African American identity, and African American acculturation were explored in a sample of Black college students (N = 48) who attended a predominately White, public, state university in the Northeastern United States. Black men and women who have Black nationalistic ideals and were immersed in Black culture reported more lifetime racist experience than those students who were less immersed in African American culture. This study investigates the biological and economic consequences of modifying the species selectivity properties of fishing gears in a multispecies context. The objective is to examine whether modifying the species selectivity properties can contribute to rebuild overexploited stocks. To meet this objective, conceptual and empirical bioeconomic models were constructed. The conceptual model was used to investigate the qualitative impacts and the empirical model was used to derive the quantitative impacts of modifying the species selectivity properties of the gear.

It is well known that people can produce regular rhythms, such as clapping or finger tapping-what is not well known is how such rhythms are maintained over time. One of the simplest activities to measure human rhythms is "continuation finger tapping," in which subjects are first asked to copy an audible rhythm by tapping along with their finger, and then attempt to maintain that tapping rate after the pacer tones stop.
