Structured Observation As A Professional Development Tool To Prepare Teachers For Observing Social Responsiveness In Preschool Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Andrea S. Adelman Jul 2014

Structured Observation As A Professional Development Tool To Prepare Teachers For Observing Social Responsiveness In Preschool Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Andrea S. Adelman

Open Access Dissertations

The call for high quality teacher implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) through legislation and the increase in the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) creates a need for researchers and educational stakeholders to produce more effective professional development programs for teachers of young children with ASD. Video analysis has been used as a method for familiarizing teachers with students’ diverse approaches to learning. As a need for more specialized training in using data to guide instruction for young children with ASD has been indicated, this research examines potential learning outcomes for teachers during the use of classroom video observation. Specifically, …

Gratitude: A Basic Human Emotion For Initiating And Strengthening Interpersonal Relationships, Adam Randall Smith Jul 2014

Gratitude: A Basic Human Emotion For Initiating And Strengthening Interpersonal Relationships, Adam Randall Smith

Open Access Dissertations

Gratitude may function to foster human sociality. Exactly how gratitude performs this putative function, however, is a question that has received little scientific attention. Many recent investigations—primarily concerned with the positive emotional outcomes associated with the experience of gratitude—have overlooked the fundamental mechanistic operations that might produce gratitude. My dissertation addresses this oversight by capitalizing on advancements in the evolutionary psychological study of function and internal regulatory variables. I approach gratitude as a psychological adaptation that functions to coordinate behaviors that initiate and strengthen interpersonal relationships in conjunction with an internal regulatory variable responsible for tracking interpersonal welfare valuation, the …

The Effect Of Economic And Social Conditions On The Use Of Clinical Preventive Services, Bisma Ali Sayed Jul 2014

The Effect Of Economic And Social Conditions On The Use Of Clinical Preventive Services, Bisma Ali Sayed

Open Access Dissertations

This study examines the relationship between economic conditions and individuals’ use of clinical preventive (CP) services. CP services form the cornerstone of the national healthcare agenda, and are key in the fight to reduce morbidity and mortality in the United States. Despite this, low utilization rates remain concerning, with recent statistics indicating that rates of CP service use fall well below the targets outlined in Healthy People 2020. In the present study, I focus on individuals’ use of three CP services, influenza vaccinations, blood cholesterol screening, and endoscopic colorectal cancer screening. Broadly, I examine the effect of state-level unemployment and …

Relationship Between Cultural Vulnerability Factors And Quality Of Life In Ethnically Diverse Prostate Cancer Survivors, Natalie E. Bustillo Jul 2014

Relationship Between Cultural Vulnerability Factors And Quality Of Life In Ethnically Diverse Prostate Cancer Survivors, Natalie E. Bustillo

Open Access Dissertations

Disparities in quality of life outcomes have been found among ethnically diverse prostate cancer survivors following prostate cancer treatment. Quality of life disparities have been traditionally explained by ethnic group membership and socioeconomic disadvantages. The examination of cultural vulnerability factors, such as cancer fatalism and medical mistrust, which are prevalent in minority ethnic groups, may offer a more comprehensive assessment of ethnic disparities as they have been found to negatively impact health beliefs and behaviors (e.g., poorer screening rates). However, few studies have examined the impact of these cultural values on quality of life following a prostate cancer diagnosis. The …

Multiple Perspectives On Parent Involvement For Middle School Students Receiving Special Education Services, Erin Blatz Jul 2014

Multiple Perspectives On Parent Involvement For Middle School Students Receiving Special Education Services, Erin Blatz

Open Access Dissertations

Parent involvement is recognized as an important factor in the education of students receiving special education services. Research indicates that parents of students with disabilities often experience barriers to their participation in their children’s education, and that the efforts put forth by school personnel to engage these parents may be insufficient. Using data collected as part of a larger study of parents’ and professionals’ perceptions related to schools’ engagement efforts, this study compared the perspectives of 25 parents and 26 professionals from five middle schools located in four school districts in a large southeastern state. The analysis of data aggregated …

Shape-Shifting Creole Identities: Representations Of Creole Figures In Nineteenth-Century Anglophone Transatlantic Literature, Claudia Amadori Jul 2014

Shape-Shifting Creole Identities: Representations Of Creole Figures In Nineteenth-Century Anglophone Transatlantic Literature, Claudia Amadori

Open Access Dissertations

This study of nineteenth-century American, British, and Caribbean texts examines the historical and geographical shifts in literary depictions of West Indian Creoles, who were the offspring of colonizers and/or slaves in the Americas, and focuses on the relationship between literature and Creole identity formation. The presence of Creoles in literature demonstrates, on the one hand, the development of a Creole consciousness in texts by West Indian authors written from a Creole point of view. On the other hand, literary Creoles in British and post-Independence American novels attest to the importance of the West Indies within the Atlantic world, although Creoles …

Spatial Analysis In Cancer Surveillance, Recinda Loraine Sherman Jul 2014

Spatial Analysis In Cancer Surveillance, Recinda Loraine Sherman

Open Access Dissertations

The burden of cancer is a significant physical, psychological, and financial toll on individuals and populations. Cancer is more common in older populations, so advances in other areas of medicine will inevitably increase the numbers of cancer patients. The development of cancer is prolonged over years which makes it difficult to identify etiologic causes. And the treatment of the disease can also be quite protracted. In the case of advanced or aggressive disease, medical treatment is sometimes reduced to a series of clinical interventions that do little to change the timeline to mortality. Currently, our most effective tool in cancer …

Learning Through Inquiry: Examining The Relationship Between Child-Generated Questions, Teacher Practices, And School Readiness In Head Start Classrooms, Irena Nayfeld Jul 2014

Learning Through Inquiry: Examining The Relationship Between Child-Generated Questions, Teacher Practices, And School Readiness In Head Start Classrooms, Irena Nayfeld

Open Access Dissertations

Research consistently shows that children from low-income environments tend to lag behind their peers in school readiness, language-development, and problem-solving skills. A number of studies have indicated that inquiry, or asking questions, is a domain-general learning tool that can help improve outcomes in all areas of academic readiness. Research conducted in middle-income samples shows that by the time children enter preschool, they often generate questions that seek to explain phenomena or extend understanding, and that those children who ask more questions have better academic outcomes. This work, however, has not been replicated with children from low-income families. Using multilevel modeling, …

Syndrome Specific And Non-Syndrome Specific Predictors Of Developmental Change In Higher Functioning Children With Autism, Kim E. Ono

Open Access Dissertations

There is a wide range of variability in symptoms and comorbid behaviors among individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Variability is seen both between individuals at a given point in time and in patterns of change within individuals over time. The goals of the current study were to examine (1) initial levels and rates of change in social reciprocity and internalizing and externalizing behavior problems, and (2) the effects of initial temperament, verbal IQ, and symptom severity on mean initial levels and rates of change in social reciprocity and comorbid internalizing and externalizing behaviors. The sample consisted of higher functioning …

Reclaiming Realities: The Boom, Post-Boom And History Films Set In The 20th Century Of Ermanno Olmi, Ian Dwayne Pettigrew Jul 2014

Reclaiming Realities: The Boom, Post-Boom And History Films Set In The 20th Century Of Ermanno Olmi, Ian Dwayne Pettigrew

Open Access Dissertations

The self-evident reasons for a work needing to be written on Olmi are plenty: his films have won many major international film festival awards, having Godard proclaim I fidanzati to be one of the ten best films ever made, and being consistently quoted visually by filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, Mike Leigh, and Ken Loach. (2008: pg.31)1. But Olmi’s films can have a very personal significance once an adventurous viewer has discovered them, that invites further viewings. Through Olmi’s singular style, we develop an interest in the characters of his films in a way that beckons us to explore our own …

Dreams, Hallucinations, Moving Statues, And Ekphrasis In Ludwig Tieck's Visual Writings, Joseph D. Rockelmann Jul 2014

Dreams, Hallucinations, Moving Statues, And Ekphrasis In Ludwig Tieck's Visual Writings, Joseph D. Rockelmann

Open Access Dissertations

When reading Ludwig Tieck's texts the reader becomes aware that dreams, the unconscious, and art play a key role. This study seeks to posit that Ekphrasis and dream interpretation are similar due to both analyzing a visual image and attempting to translate the visual into the verbal in order to gain a better and more complete understanding of it. G.E. Lessing believed that poetry and the visual arts were equal since each art form has its own strengths and when combined they create a complete art form. The artist focuses on portraying a single moment and its beauty so that …

White Racial Attitudes In The Age Of Obama, Ryan Jerome Lecount Jul 2014

White Racial Attitudes In The Age Of Obama, Ryan Jerome Lecount

Open Access Dissertations

What is the nature of White racial attitudes in the age of Obama? This dissertation project seeks to answer this question in three distinct ways. The first empirical chapter examines the role of economic insecurity and education on White racial attitudes. The second empirical chapter evaluates the relative importance of individual vs. contextual factors in shaping Whites' attitudes about race. The third empirical chapter seeks to evaluate the extent to which racial color-blindness (as opposed to other racial attitudes) motivates White opposition to race-targeted programs. Findings in empirical chapters one and two are conditional, while clear evidence is demonstrated that …

Human And Canine Personality Assessment Instruments To Predict Successful Adoptions With Shelter Dogs, Sheryl Lynn Walker Jul 2014

Human And Canine Personality Assessment Instruments To Predict Successful Adoptions With Shelter Dogs, Sheryl Lynn Walker

Open Access Dissertations

Animal shelters are often over-crowded with animals, and efforts to match potential adopters with shelter dogs, to improve the quality of adoptions, are increasing. However, a lack of evidence-based practices makes matching difficult. This research was conducted to investigate the role of dog and human personality, using questionnaire-based measurements, on adoption success in two Indiana shelters, Clinton County Humane Society and the Humane Society of Indianapolis. Ultimately, the aim of this project was to assess dog personality, human personality, and satisfaction, to evaluate adoption success in shelter dogs.^ The present thesis contains three studies exploring dog and human personality traits, …

The Impact Of Institutional Diversity On Social Cohesion And Economic Productivity And Well-Being: A Macro-Level Analysis, Ashley B. Mikulyuk Jun 2014

The Impact Of Institutional Diversity On Social Cohesion And Economic Productivity And Well-Being: A Macro-Level Analysis, Ashley B. Mikulyuk

Open Access Dissertations

Issues of racial and ethnic separation and inequality are evidenced in both past and current patterns of segregation within and across major U.S. social institutions. In education, for example, between 1980 and 2010, the percentage of Black and Latino students enrolled in 90-100% minority schools increased from 33% and 29%, to 38% and 43%, respectively (Orfield, Kuscera, and Sigel-Hawley 2012). In housing, while most major U.S. cities have experienced a decline in Black-White residential segregation over the past forty years, the average concentration of Blacks in urban neighborhoods exceeds fifty percent; in suburban areas, the typical Black resident lives in …

Immigrant Diversity And Host Country Acculturation In Leader-Member Dyads, Monica M. Sharif Jun 2014

Immigrant Diversity And Host Country Acculturation In Leader-Member Dyads, Monica M. Sharif

Open Access Dissertations

Leadership scholars have investigated the importance of leader-member dyads for several years. However, research has largely omitted the consideration of immigrant diversity with regards to leader-member relationships and outcomes in the organization. The US has experienced an influx of talented immigrants that are joining the workforce and, therefore, important to today’s economy. In a sample of two organizations, one based in South America, and another headquartered in Miami, Florida, I propose two models. One model examines the role of country of origin incongruence and LMX and the other examines the role of host country acculturation and LMX. Immigrants come from …

Longitudinal Predictors And Effects Of Parental Rejection Of Sexual Minority Youth, Matthew John Louis Page Jun 2014

Longitudinal Predictors And Effects Of Parental Rejection Of Sexual Minority Youth, Matthew John Louis Page

Open Access Dissertations

Coming out to parents is a significant milestone for lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) youth, and negative reactions can be detrimental to youth functioning. However, it is not yet clear what factors are related to parental rejection. This longitudinal study examines if parent homonegativity and religiosity predict parental reactions to youth disclosure of same-sex attractions, and if these reactions predict youth psychosocial maladjustment and spirituality. Participants consist of 173 youth (ages 14-24) and one parent to whom they have come out. Structural equation modeling is used to examine the hypothesis that parental homonegativity and religiosity predict more negative reactions to …

Cognitive Mechanisms Of Anger Regulation: The Role Of Executive Function, Katherine G. Denny May 2014

Cognitive Mechanisms Of Anger Regulation: The Role Of Executive Function, Katherine G. Denny

Open Access Dissertations

Anger is a prevalent and powerful emotion, arising when another person has thwarted a self-relevant goal or event, and increased effort is required for goal achievement. While the majority of research indicates that anger is an affective precursor to aggression, recent research implies that anger may also have beneficial consequences – at least for some people in some situations. With the negative cost of anger often being severe, and yet the potential that anger utilization can lead to enhanced performance, it is important to understand individual differences in the ability to regulate and utilize anger. To explore this area of …

Living In Limb/O: Reading Dismemberment And Orphanhood In Contemporary Spanish Caribbean Literature, Sara Jill Gusky May 2014

Living In Limb/O: Reading Dismemberment And Orphanhood In Contemporary Spanish Caribbean Literature, Sara Jill Gusky

Open Access Dissertations

Seeking alternative metaphors for understanding the Caribbean experience as it is illustrated in contemporary Spanish Caribbean novels, this dissertation explores broken bodyscapes in order to approach the organizing metaphor of dismemberment. I establish a metaphorical connection between the body with missing limbs and the family tree with missing limbs in order to map the space of limb/o in which both allegorical and literal orphans are depicted in the following novels: La casa de la laguna (1997) by Rosario Ferré, Nuestra señora de la noche (2006) and Sirena Selena vestida de pena (2000) by Mayra Santos-Febres, El reino de este mundo …

The Effect Of A Culturally-Informed Therapy For Schizophrenia On Caregiver Burden, Perceptions Of Interdependence And Self-Conscious Emotions, Giulia Caitlin Suro May 2014

The Effect Of A Culturally-Informed Therapy For Schizophrenia On Caregiver Burden, Perceptions Of Interdependence And Self-Conscious Emotions, Giulia Caitlin Suro

Open Access Dissertations

Research has demonstrated that taking care of a patient with schizophrenia has serious mental health costs to caregivers that include high levels of burden and poorer overall mental health. Thus, it is necessary to pinpoint predictors of caregiver distress and develop strategies to reduce it. We have developed a family focused, culturally-informed treatment for schizophrenia (CIT-S). We examined this intervention and its ability to decrease the maladaptive behaviors, beliefs, and values that we believe contribute to caregiver distress. CIT-S was compared against a three-session psychoeducation condition in a sample of 113 caregivers of patients with schizophrenia. Specifically, we hypothesized that …

Racial Malleability And Authenticity In Multiracial Well-Being, Lauren E. Smith May 2014

Racial Malleability And Authenticity In Multiracial Well-Being, Lauren E. Smith

Open Access Dissertations

After relatively stable rates of interracial marriage, the numbers of unions across race markedly increased over the past decade, with the number of mixed race babies also increasing. This growing shift in our population is known as the “Biracial Baby Boom” (Bratter, 2007), however, research is lagging with regard to the lived experience and its relationship to psychological well-being of this significant part of our population. Previous research found that greater malleability of one’s racial identity is related to decreased psychological well-being (Sanchez, Shih & Garcia, 2009). However, other research, related to self-concept, suggested that authentic self-complexity, more complex cognitive …

Perceived Discrimination, Ethnic Identity Development, And Well-Being In Children: An Exploration Study, Billie S. Schwartz May 2014

Perceived Discrimination, Ethnic Identity Development, And Well-Being In Children: An Exploration Study, Billie S. Schwartz

Open Access Dissertations

As diversity increases in the U.S., there is a pressing need to understand ethnic identity development in children, particularly in relation to psychological well-being. Previous studies document the importance of ethnic identity development and its influence on positive development, psychological well-being, and academic adjustment in children, particularly from ethnically diverse backgrounds (Booker; 2006; Phinney, 1990, 1995; Thomson & Zand, 2005). However, limited research investigates the relationship between ethnic identity and the well-being of school-aged children, particularly during middle childhood (García Coll & Marks, 2009; Phinney, 1990). This exploratory study sought provide greater understanding of ethnic identity development in children, as …

Prospective Associations Between Adolescents' Peer Victimization And Physical Health Problems, Whitney M. Herge May 2014

Prospective Associations Between Adolescents' Peer Victimization And Physical Health Problems, Whitney M. Herge

Open Access Dissertations

Objective. This study evaluated an empirical model of peer victimization (PV) in adolescents via latent class analysis (LCA) and latent profile analysis (LPA). The study also evaluated the relationship between PV types (i.e., overt, relational, reputational, cyber) and physical health problems (including somatic and sleep problems). Adolescent anxiety was assessed as a possible mediator of the relationship between PV and physical health problems. Method. 1067 adolescents aged 13 to 19 years (M age = 15.80 years; 57% female; 80% Hispanic) were recruited from two high schools in Miami-Dade County and were assessed at 3 time points, each about 1½ months …

Deliberate Practice Of High School Instrumentalists: A Theoretical Model, Peter J. Hamlin May 2014

Deliberate Practice Of High School Instrumentalists: A Theoretical Model, Peter J. Hamlin

Open Access Dissertations

Musicians invest an extensive amount of time practicing their instruments to acquire and refine their skills as performers. They practice to enable complex physical, cognitive, and musical skills to be performed fluently with relatively little conscious control, freeing cognitive processing capacity for higher order processing (e.g., interpretation, communication, integration). A need exists for the development of theories for deliberate practice that can then be empirically tested. This study is designed to meet that need. Through examining previous theoretical models related to practice and the extant research on practice-relevant variables a latent variable model was specified. The sample (N = 191) …

Improvisation Within The Beginning Band Curriculum: Creating A Comprehensive Improvisational Resource For The Middle School Music Educator, Christopher R. Gagne May 2014

Improvisation Within The Beginning Band Curriculum: Creating A Comprehensive Improvisational Resource For The Middle School Music Educator, Christopher R. Gagne

Open Access Dissertations

Previously conducted research has contributed to a prevalent view that the study of improvisation is an integral component to a holistic music education. The MENC embraced this view of the importance of improvisational studies in 1994 when it established improvisation instruction as a core standard of music education. However, a multitude of surveys observing music educator practices conducted in the wake of this declaration by the MENC revealed improvisation as a classroom activity lagging behind the other core standards in terms of student practice and teacher emphasis. Findings from these surveys also suggest that many educators lack a requisite background …

Safe Havens Or Danger Zones?: A Multilevel Examination Of Immigration, Community, And Intimate Partner Violence, Adrienne Celaya May 2014

Safe Havens Or Danger Zones?: A Multilevel Examination Of Immigration, Community, And Intimate Partner Violence, Adrienne Celaya

Open Access Dissertations

Several questions regarding the nature of intimate partner violence (IPV) have remained unanswered despite advancements in the field over the past several decades. Utilizing data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), this dissertation seeks to contribute to the existing literature by providing a multilevel examination of IPV, defined as two categories – physical and severe, that incorporated elements of recent field debates concerning immigration and gender. Specifically, this study examined the impact of nativity status and neighborhood immigrant concentration on IPV types, net of the effects of individual, couple and neighborhood factors, and incorporated social disorganization …

Teachers' Educational Beliefs And Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students Within Response To Intervention, Anabel Espinosa May 2014

Teachers' Educational Beliefs And Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students Within Response To Intervention, Anabel Espinosa

The purpose of this dissertation study was to examine teachers’ sense of efficacy and epistemological beliefs using a mixed methods research design. Part 1 used linear regression to analyze participant (n=115) responses to the Multicultural Efficacy Scale (MES). This study determined practicing teachers’ multicultural efficacy using the Multicultural Efficacy Scale (MES) and its relationship to demographic (gender and race/ethnicity) and teaching (degree level and certifications) variables. Study results for Part 1 revealed a significant relationship between teachers’ race and their experiences with diversity and as well as their experiences with diversity and degree level. In addition participants reported average levels …

More Intense Affective Experiences, Less Intense Affective Forecasts:Affective Forecasters Overestimate The Influence Of Outcome Specifications, Eva C. Buechel May 2014

More Intense Affective Experiences, Less Intense Affective Forecasts:Affective Forecasters Overestimate The Influence Of Outcome Specifications, Eva C. Buechel

Open Access Dissertations

It is generally assumed that the hedonic response to an outcome is a joint function of the desirability of the outcome and the likelihood of its occurrence. Losses are almost never pleasurable, but people believe that losses hurt less when they are small and/or expected than when they are large and/or unexpected. Conversely, gains are almost always pleasurable, but are more so when they are large and/or unexpected than when they are small and/or expected. When consumers decide which potential losses to avoid and which potential gains to pursue, their decisions depend on predictions of their hedonic responses to those …

The focus of this essay is a discussion of three chamber music works of Chen Yi, noted female Chinese American composer. In this essay, I will examine Chen Yi's skill in integrating musical and cultural characteristics from Eastern and western cultures. The three selected works are "Night Thoughts" for flute, cello and piano, "Romance and Dance" for violin and piano, and "Tibetan Tunes" for violin, cello and piano, all composed between 1995 and 2007. It is the intention of the author that this essay will bring these beautifully conceived works to the greater attention and appreciation of the musical community, …

Recent Critiques And Defenses Of Ethical Intuitionism, Noel Alphonse May 2014

Recent Critiques And Defenses Of Ethical Intuitionism, Noel Alphonse

Open Access Dissertations

The theory of moral intuition advanced and defended here is based on the largely unexplored possibility of combining: a) the idea that moral intuitions are justified on the basis of distinctive non-doxastic seemings (i.e., perceptualism) and b) the claim that a non-doxastic state also makes you aware of facts that are accessible in other ways through empirical observation and theorizing. Thus, the perceptualist is able to point to the phenomenology of intuition experience as important not along epistemic dimensions, but which have significant explanatory advantages over competing skeptical and non-skeptical approaches to moral knowledge and justification.

The Unencumbered Body: Imagining Liberty And Sovereignty In Pre- And Post- Revolutionary Literatures Of The Americas, Elizabeth Kelly May 2014

The Unencumbered Body: Imagining Liberty And Sovereignty In Pre- And Post- Revolutionary Literatures Of The Americas, Elizabeth Kelly

Open Access Dissertations

In the following work, I argue that writers in pre- and post-revolutionary Haiti and the United States conceived of liberty and resistance to sovereign power through disembodied figures that complicate the relationship between the physical body and the psyche, including sleepwalkers, spirits, and zombies. As a comparative analysis of lesser-known Haitian texts and canonical U.S. works, my project uncovers clear, multidirectional influences between the locales. First, I consider the meanings inscribed on tortured bodies in revolutionary Saint Domingue. I trace two important themes in Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines’ writings; Louverture uses metaphors of family and disease to sort out …
