The "Fine Line" Of Otto Rank, Philip J. Hecht Jan 1994

The "Fine Line" Of Otto Rank, Philip J. Hecht

Open Access Dissertations

Otto Rank, more than just psychologist, psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst, was a compassionate human being. The humanity reflected in his work is the subject of this dissertation and I have shown how his ideas can illuminate historical figures and fictional characters in literature and film.

Chapter one examines Rank's "fine line" in order to outline the difficult path that all must travel in life, and some of the methods that are chosen to cope with experience. To Rank, this is a balancing act between acts of creative will and choices influenced by anxiety, guilt, and fear of life and death. Rank …

A Structural Equation Model Of A Set Of Operationalized Cognitive Social Learning Variables And Citizen Participation In Neighborhood Organizations, Donald R. Whitworth Jan 1993

A Structural Equation Model Of A Set Of Operationalized Cognitive Social Learning Variables And Citizen Participation In Neighborhood Organizations, Donald R. Whitworth

Open Access Dissertations

This study investigated the salience of a cognitive social learning model for understanding the process by which an individual decides to participate in a neighborhood association. An operationalized set of cognitive social learning variables served as the dimensions of the hypothesized model to explain citizen participation. The subjects included 229 adult (18 years and older) Jewish Israelis. Of the total pool of subjects, 112 were graduates of Project Renewal neighborhood activist training programs who were interview in their homes. The remaining 117 subjects were nonactivists randomly selected from the same neighborhoods as the activists. Forty nine percent of the subjects …

The Methodological Characteristics Of An Independent Living Skills Assessment Form For Adolescents In Placement, Susan Maria Lotto Jan 1993

The Methodological Characteristics Of An Independent Living Skills Assessment Form For Adolescents In Placement, Susan Maria Lotto

Open Access Dissertations

Due to a recent upsurge in interest over the success of preparing state supervised youth for independent living, New York State has revised the majority of its regulations concerning how adolescents in placement should be prepared for independent living. The new regulations require that all adolescents in placement, fourteen years of age and over, have their independent living skills periodically assessed. The present research study examined a 140 item inventory, designed to measure the independent living skills of adolescents in placement, in terms of its internal consistency and concurrent validity. In this study 210 subjects, who resided in either the …

Reading Ability, Vocabulary Acquisition, And Phonological Processes: An Investigation Of Vocabulary Acquisition By Skilled And Less-Skilled Readers, Linda Aguiar Jan 1993

Reading Ability, Vocabulary Acquisition, And Phonological Processes: An Investigation Of Vocabulary Acquisition By Skilled And Less-Skilled Readers, Linda Aguiar

Open Access Dissertations

Previous research has found that skilled and less-skilled readers differ in their ability to incorporate aurally encountered words into their personal lexicons. The primary purpose of this study was to corroborate and expand these results. In addition, the present project investigated the associations among reading skill, vocabulary knowledge, and two phonological processes: verbal working memory and lexical access.

Data from 105 fourth-grade students were analyzed for this study. Each student took part in an experimental word learning procedure and completed three memory measures, two lexical access measures, and a test of basic reading skills. Data from subsets of 28 skilled …

Stress, Temperament, And Academic Achievement, Patricia M. Lemay Jan 1993

Stress, Temperament, And Academic Achievement, Patricia M. Lemay

Open Access Dissertations

The relationship among stress, temperament, and academic achievement in middle-school children was explored. It was hypothesized that: (1) various types of stressors differ in their relationship with academic achievement, (2) temperamental variables differ in their relationship with children's perceived stress, and (3) temperament mediates the relationship between stress and academic achievement.

Subjects were 263 sixth graders from three public school systems in southeastern New England. Using a group format, the subjects were administered two self-report measures of stress and one self-rating temperament survey, the predictor variables. The criterion measure was the Metropolitan Achievement Test scores for the 1991-1992 academic year. …

Relationships Between Self-Esteem, Social Support And Adolescent Hopefulness, Cynthia D. Connelly Jan 1993

Relationships Between Self-Esteem, Social Support And Adolescent Hopefulness, Cynthia D. Connelly

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to: (a) investigate the relationships among the variables of self-esteem, social support and hopefulness in adolescent females, and (b) determine if significant differences exist between the hopefulness of pregnant and non-pregnant adolescent females

The framework for this study was derived from the literature and based on the concepts of self-esteem, social support, and hopefulness. Research suggests that social support and self-esteem are key constructs in predicting hopefulness towards the future and were selected as factors in constructing a theoretical framework for the explanation of adolescent hopefulness. The Symbolic Interactionist perspective provided the theoretical basis …

Structural Integration Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Behavior Change: An Application To Smoking Cessation, Linelle Marie Blais Jan 1993

Structural Integration Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Behavior Change: An Application To Smoking Cessation, Linelle Marie Blais

Open Access Dissertations

The Transtheoretical Model of behavior change posits that four major components interact in a predictable fashion in affecting change: the Stages of Change, the Processes of Change, Decisional Balance, and Self-Efficacy. Yet the various components explicated by the model have yet to be fully structurally integrated. To date, virtually all the research on the model has examined the separate components in isolation, as a function of the stages of change, or as predictors of progress across the stages of change. However, the sequencing, direction, and magnitude of those relationships have yet to be examined within a single analytical framework, or …

Blood/Injury And Snake Phobias: Cognitive, Behavioral, And Physiological Characteristics, Martin Edward Franklin Jan 1993

Blood/Injury And Snake Phobias: Cognitive, Behavioral, And Physiological Characteristics, Martin Edward Franklin

Open Access Dissertations

Blood / injury phobia is a simple phobia unique in its association with fainting, underlying physiological processes, and potentially dire consequences for sufferers due to avoidance of medical attention. Laboratory studies of blood/injury phobias (e.g, Ost et al., 1984) have demonstrated a diphasic physiological response (immediate increases in heart rate and blood pressure above previously recorded baseline levels followed by significant decreases below baseline) when patients view videotapes of thoracic surgery. Little is known about the physiological responses to blood/injury stimuli of college students reporting fear of blood. It is important to examine the cognitive, behavioral, and physiological characteristics of …

The Transtheoretical Model Of Change Applied To Psychotherapy: A Psychometric Assessment Of Related Instruments, Jeffrey Mark Bellis Jan 1993

The Transtheoretical Model Of Change Applied To Psychotherapy: A Psychometric Assessment Of Related Instruments, Jeffrey Mark Bellis

Open Access Dissertations

A growing number of researchers are searching for ways of integrate existing knowledge of the psychotherapy process from disparate theoretical orientations. The Transtheoretical Model of Change has been proposed by Prochaska and DiClemente as a means of providing a conceptual integration of the theoretically fragmented field of psychotherapy. Primary goals of the current study were to investigate the psychometric properties and to refine the content of seven paper and pencil instruments designed to measure key constructs associated with the Transtheoretical Model, and to use data associated with the refined instruments to investigate theoretically proposed relationships between the measured constructs.

The Relationship Between Prior Abuse And Personality Functioning In Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatients, Kimberly Shaunesey Jan 1993

The Relationship Between Prior Abuse And Personality Functioning In Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatients, Kimberly Shaunesey

Open Access Dissertations

Previous research has indicated that a history of abuse is related to later problems in personality functioning in adults. In addition, the literature has suggested that abused adolescents also experience more family dysfunction. In the present investigation, 541 subjects' records were drawn from consecutive admissions to the adolescent inpatient service of a private psychiatric hospital. Psychological records which contained copies of the scored Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the Family Assessment Device (FAD) were reviewed. Corresponding medical charts were obtained, from which abuse histories, the Hollingshead Four Factor Index of Social Status, and other demographic information were recorded. A …

The Transtheoretical Model Applied To Safer Sex Behavior Among University Students: A Cross-Sectional Investigation, Colleen A. Redding

Open Access Dissertations

This study applied the transtheoretical model of behavior change to safer sex adoption in a cross-sectional sample of 352 college students. The transtheoretical model has received empirical support in other areas of health behavior change and has important implications for intervention development. Variables assessed include the stages of change, decisional balance, confidence, temptation, processes of change, perceived risk, perceived severity, social desirability, and behavioral variables. Where possible, the sample was split randomly to conduct exploratory and confirmatory analyses. The Pros and Cons of safer sex were best represented by a 4-factor model instead of the usual 2-factor model. The new …
