Locus Of Control And Levels Of Moral Reasoning Related To Changes In Moral Reasoning Under Coercion, Jane K. Carey Jan 1988

Locus Of Control And Levels Of Moral Reasoning Related To Changes In Moral Reasoning Under Coercion, Jane K. Carey

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of levels of moral reasoning and of locus of control to changes in moral reasoning in a situation where external pressure is present. It was hypothesized that changes in moral reasoning would be toward higher levels of reasoning. A second hypothesis was that a person's locus of control related to that person's resistance to change moral reasoning in a situation where pressure to change that reasoning was exerted.

Subjects in the study were 88 students at a large New England community college. At pre-test sessions an original large sample of …

A Physico-Chemical Study Of The Complexation Of Cyclodextrins With Pharmaceutical Substances, Francois A. Menard Jan 1988

A Physico-Chemical Study Of The Complexation Of Cyclodextrins With Pharmaceutical Substances, Francois A. Menard

Open Access Dissertations

The complexation of drugs with alpha, beta, gamma and hydroxyethyl beta cyclodextrins was investigated using the solubility method described by Higuchi and Connors. Beta cyclodextrin was shown to exhibit the most extensive complexation. The solubility isotherms of complexation were studied at different temperatures and at various pH conditions. The effect of ionization of drugs on complexation was thus evaluated for four drugs viz phenytoin, diazepam, ibuprofen and hydrochlothiazide. In the case of phenytoin and diazepam, both the non-ionized and the ionized species were shown to form a complex with cyclodextrins. The slope of complexation for ibuprofen and hydrochlorothiazide was found …

A Preliminary Economic Impact Forecasting Model For Short-Term Tourism Events: A Preliminary Framework, Vivian Okechuku Okere Jan 1987

A Preliminary Economic Impact Forecasting Model For Short-Term Tourism Events: A Preliminary Framework, Vivian Okechuku Okere

Open Access Dissertations

The tourism industry is the fastest growing industry and the third largest employer in the State of Rhode Island. In terms of industrial output, tourism is currently estimated to generate about five percent of the State's gross domestic product.

Rhode Island attracts an estimated 5 to 8 million visitors annually. Among these are visitors to Rhode Island's short-term events. The sales impact that is generated in the business sector, the personal income and employment that is generated for individuals and households and the government revenue provided through taxes qualify it as a major economic force for the future.

The measurement …

Polyphenol Oxidase Inhibition By Glucose Oxidase In Pink Shrimp (Pandalus Borialis), Mohammed H. S. Al-Jassir Jan 1987

Polyphenol Oxidase Inhibition By Glucose Oxidase In Pink Shrimp (Pandalus Borialis), Mohammed H. S. Al-Jassir

Open Access Dissertations

The glucose oxidase and catalase (GOX/CAT) enzyme system was studied as an inhibitor of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) in extracts of whole pink shrimp (Pandalus borealis).

PPO was isolated from shrimp heads and purified by acetone extraction, ultrafiltration, and gel filtration chromatography. A purification of 7.74-fold was obtained with a recovery of 54.3% activity. The shrimp PPO activity was compared to that of mushroom PPO activity. The shrimp PPO was found to have an optimum pH of 6.0-6.5 and to be stable at 25-35 °C. Below freezing, the shrimp PPO was damaged completely and no activity was obtained.

Optimization Of Solid/Liquid Separation Processes Using Particle Size Distribution Analysis, Abdulrhaman Ibrahim Alabdulaly Jan 1987

Optimization Of Solid/Liquid Separation Processes Using Particle Size Distribution Analysis, Abdulrhaman Ibrahim Alabdulaly

Open Access Dissertations

A study was conducted to investigate the influence of the coagulant dosage, suspension pH, mixing intensity and time on the suspended solids particle size distribution during coagulation, flocculation and filtration of dilute suspensions. The coagulation/flocculation investigation consisted of laboratory experiments utilizing the jar test apparatus as well as a pilot plant mixing tank. Filtration experiments were conducted using 3-six inch inside diameter glass columns with different media sizes. The data generated were used to compute the distribution slope of the particles in each sample. The distribution slope was used as the pretreatment performance indicator.

The distribution slope is influenced by …

Treatment Of Refinery Wastewaters Using Various Modified Activated Sludge Process, Saleh Mohammed Al-Muzaini Jan 1987

Treatment Of Refinery Wastewaters Using Various Modified Activated Sludge Process, Saleh Mohammed Al-Muzaini

Open Access Dissertations

Biological prosesses for treating refinery industry wastewater for re-use were studied. A pilot-scale biological reactor was constructed to simulate the activated sludge treatment process.

Actual refinery industry wastewater collected from a regional refinery and spiked with additions of selected priority organics was fed at a rate of 1.3 liters/hour into a 6-liter pilot plant having a hydraulic retention time of 4 hours. Activated sludge (AS) which was augmented by additions of powdered activated carbon (PAC) at dosages of 10, 50 and 120 mg/L was evaluated. The AS process removed 70-80% of the B005, COO and TDC. With the addition of …

The Relationship Between Children’S Observation Of Marital Discord And Play Behavior In A Non-Clinical Sample, Dorothy Bohn Clement Jan 1987

The Relationship Between Children’S Observation Of Marital Discord And Play Behavior In A Non-Clinical Sample, Dorothy Bohn Clement

Open Access Dissertations

The present investigation examined the relationship between children's exposure to low to moderate rates of marital discord in the familial environment and their behavior in settings external to the home as assessed by adult raters and direct observations. Sixty children (36 males, 24 females) between the ages of 6 and 13 years were estudied over the course of 3 months. Results of a multi-step analysis indicated that there was a highly significant relationship among females of low SES status between exposure to marital discord at home and being the object of peer aggression during free play activity. A significant relationship …
