Are Socioeconomic Status, School Environment, Body Mass Index, And Blood Pressure Related In An Ethnically Diverse Sample Of Adolescents? A Multilevel Approach, Erin N. Etzel
Open Access Dissertations
This study investigated how individual-level health behaviors as well as school-level socioeconomic status (SES) and school climate impact adolescent health outcomes. Most of the research supporting an association between adolescent health and social contextual factors has been conducted at the neighborhood-level. However, schools are also influential contexts in adolescents’ lives and their consideration in studies of adolescent health outcomes is warranted. The present research expands upon the existing literature in the area of school contextual effects on health, as it addresses these issues in an ethnically diverse sample of 84,165 adolescents using multilevel techniques to properly account for the nested …

The purpose of this study was to conduct a mixed-methods analysis of barriers to adherence reported by adolescents and young adults with CF and their parents. This study utilized qualitative interviews and quantitative measures of adherence and psychosocial functioning to identify key barriers in relation …
Farming In The Commons, Fishing In The Congress, And U.S. Aquaculture In The 21st Century, Aaron Welch
Farming In The Commons, Fishing In The Congress, And U.S. Aquaculture In The 21st Century, Aaron Welch
Open Access Dissertations
Fisheries and aquaculture policy in the United States exhibits a peculiar duality. Commercial fishing is functionally open-access, heavily subsidized, and regulated by a federal bureaucracy staffed in part by fishing industry representatives. Marine aquaculture, in contrast, is effectively forbidden. Today there are no functioning fish farms anywhere in the federal waters of the United States, largely due to a regulatory environment that discourages applications for aquaculture permits. This bifurcated policy does not seem to be dependent on any specific environmental or economic rationale. Instead, this policy appears to be the product of a series of individual assumptions and policy choices …

Propionate Induces Gluconeogenesis In Dairy Cattle Through Direct Activation Of The Bovine Cytosolic Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase Gene Promoter, Qian Zhang
Open Access Dissertations
Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PCK, GTP; EC4.1.1.32) catalyzes the conversion of oxaloacetate (OAA) to phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP), a critical reaction for gluconeogenesis. The two isoforms of PCK, namely cytosolic PCK (PCK1), and the mitochondrial PCK (PCK2) are abundantly expressed in liver and kidney. Increased PCK1 activity and mRNA expression in liver is observed as feed intake recovers during early lactation in dairy cows, a condition linked to increased ruminal propionate production. The central hypothesis of this dissertation is that propionate regulates its own metabolism in liver of dairy cattle through regulation of the PCK1 gene. The objectives of this dissertation were to determine: …
