Phytoplankton, or microscopic primary producers, contribute to carbon export through the biological transformation of carbon dioxide into organic molecules. Phytoplankton are responsible for approximately half of global net primary production, while only contributing minimally to total photosynthetic biomass. Despite their important role in the global cycling of nutrients, phytoplankton physiology and ecology are often highly simplified in global biogeochemical models. This dissertation elucidates the role of phytoplankton physiology and ecology within biogeochemical cycles, allowing for better characterization of marine microbial distribution and better representation of nutrient cycling for interpretive and predictive models. This dissertation investigates how twenty-first-century prose fiction navigates the ecological and temporal dimensions of planetary crisis. In response to accelerating pressures - climate change, ecological collapse, and the intensification of capitalist modernity - literary studies has turned increasingly to the planetary as a conceptual frame. Yet this shift has often outpaced the development of adequate critical vocabularies and narrative methodologies. By drawing on ecocriticism, narrative theory, phenomenology, and related fields, Textual Sediments proposes a new framework for reading what it terms the planetary novel: a sedimentary genre characterized by temporal layering, formal hybridity, and a recursive engagement with scale. The Southern Ocean plays a key role in modulating global climate via physical and biogeochemical processes, both today and in the past. Wind-driven upwelling brings nutrient-rich deep water to the surface, enabling carbon exchange with the atmosphere and fueling primary production that facilitates long-term storage of carbon in the deep ocean. Young adulthood is a period of transition during which individuals could greatly benefit from health promotion tools. Civic engagement has been touted as one potential form of health promotion given its association with positive well-being. However, researchers have primarily examined civic engagement as a health promotion tool among older adults and adolescents, and less is known about its mental health implications for young adults. Nitrate is the most common limiting nutrient in the ocean and plays a critical role in the extent and intensity of marine primary production, and therefore the global ocean’s biological pump. Characterization of the supply and demand of nitrate constrains how ocean biology may regulate climate, so understanding the degree of nitrate consumption in the past is a fundamental step towards understanding controls on past climate. Research has shown that memorizing a character by its strokes is perhaps the most difficult aspect of learning the Chinese language, particularly for beginning students. My dissertation maps contemporary Central American cultural production in literature, music and grassroots networks for culture. It is focused on the postwar period in the region, from the signing of the Peace Accords in the 1990s onwards. I focus on emergent cultural narratives in order to analyze the reconstruction of isthmian imaginaries through a constructive lens. Cultural texts and discursive imaginaries are analyzed from a perspective grounded in local histories versus the grand homogenizing narratives that have historically defined the Central America isthmus, such as mestizaje and the revolutionary as paradigm. This dissertation examines Brianda Domecq’s new historical novel La insólita historia de la Santa de Cabora (1990), Carmen Boullosa’s origin novel Duerme (1994), and Carlos Reygadas’s auteur film Japón (2002), and studies the way these texts rearticulate Mexican history and Mexicanidad. These works reload Mexico’s history and understanding of what is to be Mexican by intersecting fiction with the historical and literary archive and by positioning marginal figures in leading roles. The dominant discourses of Eastern European rural regions portray them as passive, homogeneous places and “the greatest ‘losers’ of the post-socialist transition” (Saar, 2008, 140). This dissertation explores the (re)production of post-Soviet rural space from the perspective of Estonian rural women. It utilizes a multi-perspectival approach that tackles the production of space from three interrelated angles: representational, material, and symbolic (Lefebvre, 1991; Halfacree, 2007). Claims of racelessness in present-day Cuba conflate identities and generate public discourse that misalign with the social realities of black Cubans on the island. Decolonial and critical race theorists argue the necessity of racial-identity language: Unconfronted race-based injustice and unproblematized whiteness are among the unaddressed issues concretized by racial democracy rhetoric. Ostracism – being ignored and excluded – and sexual objectification – when an individual is regarded only as an object that exists for the use and pleasure of others – are conceptually related, yet the connections between the two phenomena have yet to be examined empirically. The purpose of this study was to understand the relationships among East Asian international students cultural construals of stress (i.e., acculturative stress), psychological wellbeing (i.e., interdependence happiness), cognitive appraisal (i.e., dialectical thinking), and coping skills (i.e., collectivistic coping: seeking social support and forbearance) using Chun, Moos, and Cronkite’s (2006) stress and coping model as the theoretical framework. This dissertation is a qualitative study of fifteen WPA instructors of the composition practicum. Driven by the primary research question, how do WPAs enact mentorship within composition practicum?, the study sought to better identify how WPAs enact and perceive mentorship within the composition practicum through an activity-theory framework in three distinct phases: a collection and analysis of twenty-six pedagogical materials, twelve structured interviews, and one case study. This dissertation is a literary study of how and why late Qing Chinese self-image formation involved the “alien eye,” by which I mean the view of the foreigner observing and writing about China. I investigate writings and occasionally images produced within the period from 1874 to 1911, framed by the founding of the first Chinese-owned modern newspaper and the overthrow of the Qing empire. The literary genres I address include essays, short stories, novels, and plays. This dissertation aims to claim immigrant literature as an essential part of Chinese American studies. It responds to the challenge by considering how “Chineseness” is negotiated, challenged, and transformed in the literary texts produced by both writers. I argue that “Chineseness” as presented by post-1979 immigrant writers Ha Jin and Geling Yan is a transnational process of defamiliarization, radicalization, and transformation. In their work, new immigrant writers are self-consciously and strategically positioning themselves as both insider and outsider. The number of individuals living beyond a cancer diagnosis continues to increase due to advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Unfortunately, most cancer therapies are associated with a range of complications that can affect the course and completion of treatment as well as patient quality of life. Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a serious side effect of many commonly used chemotherapeutic agents, including the microtubule-targeting agent paclitaxel. I examine the narratives imaginaries of Terrorism among some authors and filmmakers between 2007 and 2012. I argue that these oeuvres give rise to a new understanding of terrorism that is rooted in a series of traumatic experiences endured by the subject. These humiliations lead to the urgent need of a radical revenge: The terrorist act. The new terrorism is rooted in the "radical multitude" of oppressed singularities. This dissertation focuses on the motivations of successive Haitian governments from the late nineteenth century to the 1960s in participating in world’s fairs abroad and in mounting expositions in Haiti. In particular, it explores why and how world’s fairs became a primary path through which Haitian officials and elites sought to represent and defend the nation’s image internationally. World’s fairs were mostly held in countries of the global north as showcases of national progress, imperial reach and power. This study examines literary contestations of an imperial discourse I call Pacific Imminence, a ruse of American exceptionalism that framed U.S. Pacific ascendancy as an impending development inaugurating global economic prosperity and a harmonious community of humankind. Through the continental imaginary of Manifest Destiny, most Americanist scholarship has viewed the Pacific as a peripheral site of empire-building in the long nineteenth century. By contrast, I argue that the Pacific uniquely catalyzed a globalist re-branding of U.S. imperialism that American and East Asian writers resisted through fictional forms. This dissertation seeks to understand eroticized violence by analyzing sadism and masochism as models of modern masculinity and power. I look at the literature and theory of male sexual sadism and masochism as “artefacts of art” as metaphors of male subjectivity expressed across vast and interdisciplinary cultural fields of cultural expression (Bersani, Freudian Body 5).
