By using composite beams in building construction more durability and savings in cost could be achieved. This paper shows an approximate design procedure which could be followed without running a number of trials with different sections to arrive at the required one. "In this investigation an attempt has been made to determine simple formulae leading to a better, more useful and much safer design of flange coupling bolts. The bolts were tested under tensile loading and bending and hence the results obtained apply for bolts under these modes of loading only.

The behavior of flange bolts under different initial tightening torques was studied by measuring strains in a bolt on which strain gages had been attached* . "This investigation presents a mean to determine thermal neutron flux of a reactor by irradiating copper wires inside the fuel elements. The activity recorded after decay correction, is the relative thermal neutron density. Thermal neutron flux is a measure of the neutron density at thermal energy, 0.025 ev.

Gold foils irradiated at National Bureau of Standards were used as the absolute neutron flux calibration standards. The average flux of the reactor with water as the reflector ranges from 7.24 x 10¹⁰ neutrons/cm² - sec. to 7.87 x 10¹⁰ neutrons/cm² - sec. as obtained from the calculations. …

A brief summary of the geography and geology of Thailand as a whole has been given as a general introduction to the source of the materials studied in this thesis.

The results of sieve analyses have shown that the sluice boxes do not effectively concentrate the cassiterite grain below 0.147 mm. from the rough concentrate treated in the tin-dressing shed.

"Models of epoxy resin were used in a stress freezing technique to determine areas of possible failure in lined circular openings. These models were loaded in a centrifuge for a fixed period of time, after which they were analyzed photoelastically. The material characteristic changes, with time, were recorded on graphs and used in the analysis.

Two types of tests were conducted; one, where the lining thickness was changed and, the other, where materials of the liner and plate material were changed.

"This research project was undertaken to determine the possibility of using an induction log of the type applied in petroleum exploration, for the detection of conductive ore- bodies asymmetrically located with respect to a borehole. Since a mathematical analysis would be extremely complex, a model study was conducted, using graphite bodies of various shapes to simulate different modes of mineral occurence.

(1) Determination of techniques and equipment which would give satisfactory correlation of experimental heat transfer coefficients with those obtained from acceptable heat transfer equations when using an induction heater as the heat source. (2) Determination of depth of energy deposition in a thick-walled tube due to induction heating.

Techniques were developed that gave a correlation between experimental and calculated coefficients that were within -5% for minimum flow and +8% for maximum flow.

The design, construction, and operation of an apparatus for testing and comparing the load carrying characteristics of gases are described. Several monatomic, diatomic, and triatomic gases were tested and the results evaluated and compared. The data are tabulated and displayed in a series of curves.

Introduction

The configuration of biphenyl has been the subject of much investigation and many recent reviews (1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 17, 21, 22). Of particular interest has been the configuration of 2,2' -bridged biphenyl derivatives. The preparation of an optically active 2,2' -three-carbon-atom-bridged biphenyl having an ultraviolet absorption maximum at 250 mμ, has been recently described (14). Although the compound was easily racemized, this property requires that a non-planar configuration be assigned to this biphenyl (I). Furthermore, this ultraviolet spectra indicates that inter-ring conjugation must exist in the non-planar configuration.
