In 1958 the Food Additives Amendment to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act was adopted causing a great deal of concern on the part of producers of packaging material. Any ingredient of the package that might migrate or transfer to food contained in the package became, by definition, a food additive subject to regulation and prior approval of the Food and Drug Administration.

Other acts and regulations have been adopted since 1958 indicative of increasing concern by the Federal Government for consumer welfare. This activity can be expected to have far reaching effects on manufacturers who must depart from …

An Investigation Of Drift-Covered Environments Using The Shallow Reflection Seismic Method, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, Thomas Patrick Luby

Seismic work utilizing a six-channel analog seismograph and a hammer impact source successfully obtained coherent reflection events from horizon within the glacial overburden, from the drift-paleozoic interface, and from Paleozoic bedrock targets. Fieldwork was conducted in eight drift-covered environments where the drift thickness varied from 80 feet to greater than 500 feet. Factors that exerted a major control over the seismic response at each environment studied include the depth of the water table, the type of surface material underlying the shot point and geophone spread, and the use of single versus multiple geophones per channel. The two objectives of this study were to determine the kinds and numbers of rotifers in the plankton in a portion of the Kalamazoo River and to ascertain the effects of various chemical constituents of the river water on the rotifers.

The Kalamazoo River is located in southwestern Michigan and flows westward into Lake Michigan. In the academic year 1959-1960 the National Science Foundation supported an undergraduate research program at Western: Michigan University for the spectrographic analysis of human hair. This preliminary work concerned itself with determining the quantities of magnesium, iron, and calcium in human hair. The hair samples were taken from a supposedly normal cross section of people. This group consisted of 41 women and 52 men. The ages varied from 2 to 72.
