"Thin film techniques may be the key to future miniaturization of electrical equipment. The purpose of this thesis was to develop procedures for deposition of thin film resistors and to test these deposited resistors. Starting with a vacuum system, equipment was designed and built to hold and heat the substrate, monitor the substrate temperature and deposited resistance, and to evaporate the material to be deposited. Resistors were deposited and tested for resistance between resistors, capacitance between resistors, and resistance of resistors. A heat aging test was also used comparing resistors with and without a silicon monoxide coating"--Abstract, page ii.

"This study was made to determine the feasibility of the use of optics in the analysis of structures. Since the curvature of a beam due to a loading condition is a function of the moment, a measure of this curvature is a measurement of the moment.

This study used the relationship between object size and image size formed by a concave or convex reflective surface to determine the radius of curvature and the moment at the point.

"The Joplin area of Missouri, which includes the Duenweg-Oronogo belt, was a famous zinc and lead mining district. Many mines were abandoned after World War I and filled with water. These provide a large potential supply of ground water. Expansion of industries and population in the area since World War II has caused a demand for water. In 1964, the Ground Water Branch, Water Resources Division, of the United States Geological Survey began a project to study the surface and ground water resources of the area. "The continued expansion of the nuclear reactor facility and the nuclear engineering program makes it desirable that a neutron spectrometer be available at the reactor facility. This unit would be available for use in graduate and undergraduate laboratories and for graduate research.

A single crystal, white radiation spectrometer including collimator, automatic controls, and shielding was designed and constructed.

"This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation into the photomechanical effect in silicon. The effect was found to be very similar to the electromechanical effect. In both cases the phenomena observed is the softening of a thin surface layer of the material when it is either illuminated or when a current is flowing through the material. An anisotropy was observed in both the hardness and the photomechanical effect. Increasing temperatures tended to "washout" the photomechanical effect. The surface hardness and the photomechanical effect were found to depend heavily on proper surface preparation of the samples, however little dependence …

"In the case of the linear statistical model, it has been shown that under certain conditions the confidence intervals obtained by considering the parameters one at a time are conservative when used as a joint confidence region, using the product of confidences as the confidence. However, nothing had been known of how conservative they are. This research provides accurate estimates of the true confidence for these cases.

Also, it has not yet been proved that they are indeed conservative for all cases. It is thought that they are, and the results of this research support this conjecture"--Abstract, page ii.

"This thesis has been prepared to make available basic information on the use of the oxidation products of pyrrhotite to cement hydraulic tailing stope fill. As nothing has been published on this subject to date, a review has been made of pertinent information culled from accounts of work in related fields. From this study, a set of equations representing the most likely pyrrhotite oxidation reactions has been evolved and tests supporting these equations performed. Transformations Of Tryptamine And Tryptophan By Basidiomycetes, Hsaio-Lung Cheng

"The product formed from tryptamine by Trichloloma nudum was identified as indoleacetic acid (IAA) and from tryptophan by Cantharellus cibrarius as indolelactic acid (ILA). The products were extracted from the spent media with organic solvents. Purification and identification of the crystalline transformation products were accomplished by means of paper chromatography, spectrophotometry and thin layer chromatography.

The conversion of tryptamine and tryptophan was also studied in cultures of Lencopaxillus paradoxus, Pluteus granularis and Pleuatus ostreatus. Only Pluteus granularis was found to transform tryptamine into IAA. Lencopaxillus paradoxus transformed tryptamine into oxindoleacetic acid (OIAA).

"This report presents the result of an experimental investigation on the effect of 1) fuel consumption in a diesel engine on the mean cylinder-head surface temperature 2) engine speed and load on the maximum cylinder pressure.

A fast-response thermocouple was fixed in the cylinder head and temperatures were measured for various load and speed conditions. An attempt was made to record a transient surface temperature versus crank-angle diagram. Some doubt as to the reliability of this recording may arise because of the very small amount of time lag in the thermocouple action. This is immaterial to the subject of this …
