A Determination Of The Rate Of Evaporation Of Zinc At Atmospheric Pressure., Yu Ming Su

"Measurements of evaporation rates of zinc in three different residual gases, e.g., argon, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen at one atmosphere pressure, were made. It was found that the rate of evaporation of zinc in one atmosphere of argon was almost the same as that in carbon monoxide, while the rate in hydrogen was almost twice the rate in argon or carbon monoxide. Measurements of evaporation rate of zinc in one atmosphere of argon-oxygen mixtures were also made. The evaporation rate was considerably reduced because the formation of the oxide film retards the zinc vapor escaping from the evaporating surface"--Abstract, page …

"Groundwater is becoming increasingly important as a source of water supply in the United States. Consequently, the prediction of well yields is a vital concern. In order to predict the quantity of water which can be reduced from a given aquifer it is necessary to know the aquifer's hydrologic characteristics. Many theoretical formulae have been derived for determining the aquifer characteristics. To date, these formulae have been tested mainly on unconsolidated and clastic rock aquifers. It has never been shown that these formulae can also be consistently applied to carbonate aquifers which underlie regions of karst terrain. This paper summarizes …

The long-horned beetles, family Cerambycidae, form a large, colorful, often-collected and well-known group. However, the drab, more primitive subfamilies, Parandrinae, Prioninae, Aseminae, and Spondylinae, are much less well-known although they often appear in collections.

In this paper, the author has attempted to list those species of primitive cerambycids which occur or are likely to occur within the State of Illinois. Keys, illustrations, descriptions, and distribution maps have been developed to aid in identification. The list and keys should be applicable to any midwestern state with the addition or deletion of a few species.

A study was made to determine the effect of lead, nickel and pentachlorophenol, at varying pH levels, on the respiration rate of this family of aquatic oligochaetes. Respiration was measured as the ul. of oxygen consumer per mg. of live tissue per hour of exposure.

Worms were found to decrease their rate of respiration in the presence of lead nitrate. This was demonstrated at three pH levels: 6.5, 7.5 and 8.5. It was concluded that this drop was due to the action of lead on the enzymes of the metabolic systems and on the characteristic of lead which stimulates the …

"In the following report, a method for evaluating the attenuation characteristics of a general muffler as well as the design, construction and use of the associated apparatus are described. The method combines accepted plane wave theory and experimental techniques into a relatively straightforward approach to the analysis of acoustic filters. Equations are developed to cover the frequency range between 300 and 4000 cycles per second. Deviations from these equations extend the use of the equipment to low frequencies without the need for unduly long and cumbersome apparatus. ""A film boiling heat transfer study was conducted with three different diameter cylindrical copper heaters over a wide range of pressures for nitrogen and argon with the heat transfer surface in the horizontal position. The data were compared to the commonly used film boiling heat transfer relations. The common relations were found to be considerably in error for the range of variables covered in this investigation. "Six AISI C 1065 steels were heat treated and tensile tested in order to evaluate their ductility at high strength levels. Heat treating and tensile testing procedures were developed for use working with these steels at tensile strengths of 300,000 psi and higher. The austenitizing procedure in the hardening operation was found to affect the strength and ductility of the high strength samples. Rapidly heating to the austenitizing temperature followed by an immediate quench produced better properties than slow heating followed by a soaking period before the quench. "The principal aim of this thesis is to present a new index of performance which when minimized will simultaneously optimize the system energy and sensitivity function of a multivariable linear control system. With this performance index it is usually desirable to discriminate between the sensitivity factor and the energy term by weighting them differently. Two types of weighting factors are presented. Since it is not easy to minimize that performance index for all types of problems, further research is suggested to find methods of solution for such problems. "This study has been conducted to determine the applicability of the Terzaghi Theory of Consolidation and to determine the compressibility of silt soils with varying clay content. A pure silt was extracted from the Lebanon Silt Loam and mixed with varying amounts of the Onyx Cave Illite-Chlorite Clay. The compressibility of these mixtures was determined and an attempt made to apply the Terzaghi Theory in the analysis. It was found that the compressibility of soils high in silt content is very low. It was also found that the Terzaghi Theory may be applied to mixtures of 15 percent or more …

Quartz tubing was used in the final model while attempts to use alumina were made during earlier work. The final model has total optical power output of 230 mw at a discharge current of 29 amperes in the dc excitation mode. Provision was also made to utilize RF or pulsed excitation. "This thesis describes the effects of several methods of introducing wire fibres into a concrete mix upon the uniformity of wire fibre reinforced concrete. Various mechanical and manual methods of introducing the fibres were used and comparisons of the methods were based upon variability in splitting tensile strength and the quantitative distribution of the fibres as determined by visual inspection of sawed cylinders. Test results show that the tensile strength of concrete is increased appreciably by the inclusion of steel wire fibres in the mix and the uniformity of strength is similar to that of unreinforced concrete.
