Despite great advances within the last few decades of Western scholarship concerning the indigenous Japanese religion, little has been written on the Shinto concept of evil. Given the overall optimistic Shinto attitude toward life, the purpose of this thesis was to analyze its view of evil with reference to Motoori Norinaga's thought in order to find out whether Shinto understands it in a realistic manner. This thesis argues that the Franco-Prussian War provoked strong emotional responses that were encoded in the memory of the war. The management of this emotional response represented an important aspect for the establishment of the Third Republic's legitimacy. By uniting French citizens through a public memory of the warby means of commemorations, funerals, and narratives among others-the Third Republic fostered an intense national consciousness that emerged as a feature of French identity. "First response teams dealing with hazardous substances often require the highest level of protection provided by Level A suits. These suits are fully encapsulating, bulky, and heat retentive. The effect of these suits on the wearer's ability to perform various tasks is of interest when it comes to human performance analysis. This research effort examined the effect of the Level A suit on fine motor and gross motor dexterity. "Tests run in May 2005 at an arid site as part of airborne minefield detection yielded substantial airborne background data with ground truthed and surveyed false alarm locations. ERDC and MultiSensor LLC identified the locations, geo referenced and documented different false alarms. The project reported here built a self-contained database of image chips recording target signatures for MSI (four bands) and MWIR sensors for false alarms from this background data and mines from related areas. This thesis seeks to test the utility of the Jentleson and Whytock (2006) model, which stems from their study of U.S. foreign policy with Libya. Their study established a model of foreign policy coercion, which they maintain helps explain why Libyan foreign policy changed so radically during the presidency of George W. Bush. The model is applied to American policy, implemented from the Carter administration to that of George W. Bush, towards Iran, Burma (Myanmar) and North Korea. Organophosphorus based pesticides are highly toxic and represent serious environmental concerns. These compounds tend to easily enter ground water and cause drastic pollution. The toxicity levels of the organophosphorus pesticides however are based on their structures, and hence methods for their selective detection are in high demand. The creation of new materials for sensing and actuation requires careful manipulation of the responsive units required to control analyte selectivity. This paper analyzes the impacts of economic, political, and cultural globalization on transnational terrorism using world-level data in a semi-log structure for the years 1970-2000. There are currently two opposing frameworks, which are explored in this research: destructive globalization and civilizing globalization. The empirical results are evaluated and each variable is classified as support for one of the opposing theories. The economic and cultural facets of globalization are divided among their support for the opposing theories while the spread of democracy produces strong support for the civilizing globalization theory.

Five novel 2,2 '-bis bi pyridine Ru(II) complexes have been synthesized and characterized using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 1H-1H-COSY, elemental analysis, fast atom bombardment or electrospray mass spectra and electronic absorption spectroscopy. Binding of Ru (11) complexes with nerve gas analogos such as diethyl chlorophosphate (DCP), dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP) and hydrolyzed product (HCl) has been investigated by electronic absorption, fluorescence, and lifetime studies. Compound 1 showed a quenching in 3MLCT emission after an initial increase in intensity upon the addition of DCP with a bathochromic shift of 25 nm. Compound 2 exhibit a …

The basis of the research work described here is the use of nanocomposite materials built by bottom-up approach for the selective detection of nerve gas analogs. Nanocomposites materials constructed by using nanoparticle-monomer-receptor (NMR) concept have been utilized to detect nerve gas analogs DCP and DMMP. Synthetic approach used in the construction of nanosensors involved use of robust platforms such as silica nanoparticles and fluorescent quantum dots. The research is focused on developing nanosensors consisting of different components that are chemically linked, namely, nanoparticle, fluorescent monomer, and receptor (NMR sensors) and nanoparticle, monomer, nanomolecule, and receptor (NMNR sensors) for the sensitive and selective detection of nerve gas agents. These sensors detect the target toxins by fluorescence change which is amplified by signal transduction. Model nerve gas toxins (DCP) and (DMMP) and HCl were employed as analytes, and the nitrogen heterocyclic compounds, 5-aminoindazole and dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz) as receptors in the NMR and NNMR nanosensors. My research explores cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as a case study of demedicalization. I will use an instrumental case study method to examine the history and setting of CPR. In order to gain a stronger understanding of CPR in particular, I will look in depth at the actors and organizations involved in the development, medicalization, and demedicalization of CPR. The Kalinga peace pact system forms an intricate web of bilateral agreements between forty or more culture groups in the northern Philippines. The prehistoric coastal communities of Point Hope, Alaska have been considered important Arctic archaeological sites since their initial excavations in 1939. The majority of the archaeological artifacts are grouped into two temporally distinct cultural components, the Ipiutak (2100-1500BP) and the Tigara (800-300BP). Although debated, Arctic archaeologists have suggested that the Ipiutak depended heavily on land mammals with only seasonal reliance on sea mammals, whereas the Tigara relied primarily on sea mammals including whales. On February 12, 1853, Illinois legislated its notorious black exclusion law and soon after President Lincoln made public his Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, the Illinois legislature threatened to condemn this policy but Governor Richard Yates prevented them from doing so. On February 1, 1865, the same state ratified the Thirteenth Amendment and a few days later, repealed the state's Black Laws; then on January 15, 1867, it redefined the state's citizenship to include blacks by ratifying the Fourteenth Amendment. Finally, on March 5, 1869, Illinois ratified the Fifteenth Amendment, granting nationwide suffrage to black men. This work deals with these …
