Resonance, Jess D. Skyleson May 2025

Resonance, Jess D. Skyleson

Masters Theses

Resonance is a digital media installation intended to facilitate a deeper understanding of inter-connection within and between ourselves and others, and to depict how our voices live both within and beyond us. The exhibit is divided into two intertwining halves:

Externally, the piece involves creative communication between people, art mediums, and life experiences. This aspect includes the contributions of thirty patients, doctors, and caregivers who responded to one another’s artwork in a series of workshops led by the artist. Starting with the creative writing of patients, this was provided to a group of unrelated medical providers, who responded with visual …

Hunting, Feiyang Zhuang May 2025

Hunting, Feiyang Zhuang

Masters Theses

This writing is about fragility and revelation of technological systems. It considers how brokenness, delay, and opacity are not flaws but openings—opportunities to reimagine our relationship to technology as something grounded, sensory, and continuous with the natural and material world.

Masters Theses

I am still learning how to understand the world.

As I moved through different countries, cultures, and communities, I often found myself unlearning and rebuilding what I thought I knew. At times I felt unanchored, floating without a sense of safety or belonging. So I began to walk.

Walking became my way of reconnecting. With each step, I used my senses to notice the details around me: shadows cast by sunlight; life growing from soil; the presence of buildings and objects as quiet evidence of human existence. These elements — scent, light, sound, size, temperature — shape our perception of …

Returning Into The Deep Forest--A Methodological Practice Around Memory, Asianness, And Speech, Yu Ye May 2025

Returning Into The Deep Forest--A Methodological Practice Around Memory, Asianness, And Speech, Yu Ye

Masters Theses

">">The title of this thesis is borrowed from the Tang dynasty poem Deer Enclosure by Wang Wei: “Empty mountain, no one in sight—only the echo of voices. Returning sunlight slips into the deep forest, shining once more on moss.” I feel like my essay is responding to this kind of sensation: light does not shine head-on, but folds back, glancing sideways through dense branches, illuminating what is often overlooked. In that gesture of return—quiet, angled, persistent. This thesis unfolds in three chapters, each following a distinct path—image (Camera Lucida by Roland Barthes), movement (The Rings of Saturn by …

Swing Landscape, Yingwen Lin May 2025

Swing Landscape, Yingwen Lin

Masters Theses

The text will consist of my self-introduction and short articles. Roughly speaking, the narrative is built upon my background and personal transformation. Geographically, I was born in Shenzhen (largest migrant city in China), lived in Shanghai (China’s largest economic center and a major international financial hub), and now reside on the East Coast of the United States, as a particle moving between different cultures, global commodities, and online media. I engage subjectively in these objective changes, with objects and events shaping who I am. I consider myself an outsider, an observer, an economic enthusiast, and a newspaper reader, participating in …

Breath, Void, Ground, Huichun Yang May 2025

Breath, Void, Ground, Huichun Yang

Masters Theses

Before the sound, there is breath. Before the explosion, there is a threshold. Before the noise, there is silence.

Inspired by the physicality of balloons, this thesis explores breath as sonic material that carries memory, moves through bodies, and resonates across spaces. The balloon becomes a skin that holds breath: a force inhaling trauma, ritual, and intimacy. When released through mouth and latex, breath conjures alien, untranslatable voices that hiss and hum.

It begins with a balloon and expands with endless breath. The balloon becomes a site where the history, body, and voice disintegrate and reform. The pressure and tension …

Rooted In Learning: Eco-Art Pedagogy And Place-Based Learning, Emily Van Heusen May 2025

Rooted In Learning: Eco-Art Pedagogy And Place-Based Learning, Emily Van Heusen

Masters Theses

This thesis explores the integration of eco-art pedagogy and place-based learning (PBL) in secondary art education, investigating how these approaches help develop artistic practices and deepen environmental awareness among high school students. The study focuses on the implementation of a 4-week curriculum at Mount Pleasant High School in Providence, Rhode Island. This research examines how art making and place-specific learning contribute to local environmental investment, personal connection and environmental engagement. Using a mixed-method approach grounded in arts-based research (ABR) and teacher-research methodology, this study analyzes teen-created artworks, sketchbook and journal reflections, and researcher personal reflections and field notes. The research …

Bookmaking With Young Children Rooted In Care And Choice, Xiao Guo

Masters Theses

This thesis investigates book arts as a dynamic, interdisciplinary learning tool for young children. It examines how educators can design bookmaking lessons that foster creative storytelling and self-expression through the interplay of form, content, materiality, and process. The research explores choice- and inquiry-based teaching practices in bookmaking that center care and collaboration with young children.

Playing With Ideas: A Museum-Based Inquiry, Claire Meagher May 2025

Playing With Ideas: A Museum-Based Inquiry, Claire Meagher

Masters Theses

This thesis investigates the ways that alternative arts approaches such as

Teaching for Artistic Behavior, creative inquiry, and play based learning can

be incorporated into a contemporary arts based curriculum in the museum

setting. In addition to this, it looks closely at the significance of the museum

space and community in these learning encounters. The methodology included a

preliminary case study and teacher based research, which were completed with

the School & Teacher programs at the RISD museum. The qualitative data from

this research consisted of observations, teaching experiences, and reflections in

a visual journal. These findings supported the creation …

Untitled, Seung Ho Jeon May 2025

Untitled, Seung Ho Jeon

Masters Theses

We are, by our very own nature, confined within our own lived experiences. To transcend our inherent loneliness, we seek ways to fulfill a fundamental sense of belonging through symbolic interactions. The external world we navigate is a subjective framework constructed through repetitive, mundane interaction, and as actors, we participate in such monotonous performances as a means to create shared meaning.

Such performance manifests as a collective entity - an intangible force that is not bound by institutionalized systems, emerging organically from grassroots beliefs and practices. Throughout the performance, there are symbols - artifacts, space, and interactions. And these transformative …

The Stream Of Life, Yitao Yuan May 2025

The Stream Of Life, Yitao Yuan

Masters Theses

The repetitive engagement with technological objects erases the depth of emotion by creating habits that bypass embodied and erotic pleasures and lead to a de-sexualized form of technology fetishism. The stimuli produced by machines that humans engage with are not able to convey the strength of intimacy between humans. Such virtual stimuli as the words and images produced and mediated through modern machines continuously shape conscious perception. This thesis book is split into two sections: a theoretical text and a series of images and explanations about my installation practice and process. They both seek to investigate the intersection of human …

Echoes Of Longing, Mahalexmi Mohan May 2025

Echoes Of Longing, Mahalexmi Mohan

Masters Theses

Loss lingers like a shadow, a weight no time can lift. Longing becomes a silent scream, echoing within, unanswered. Internal pain festers in the quiet, where unhealed wounds weave themselves into the fabric of being. Each breath is both survival and surrender, a fragile balance between hope and the hollow ache of what was, what will never be, yet could be.

Abstract

My work is deeply influenced by my experiences within a dysfunctional family structure and is explored through the relationship of emotional vulnerability and its effect on self-worth. Layered into the work is a confrontation with the scars, conflict …

Body Choice Of Women-507, Yilin Sun May 2025

Body Choice Of Women-507, Yilin Sun

Masters Theses

This thesis examines the struggle for bodily autonomy through the lens of contemporary art, focusing on 507, a kinetic installation by Yilin (Rebecca) Sun. At the heart of this work lies a powerful meditation on the emotional and political dimensions of reproductive responsibility. In a world where women’s rights over their own bodies are frequently contested, 507 becomes both a vessel of remembrance and a visual act of resistance. It channels the often-silenced experiences of women into a shared space of reflection, mourning, and confrontation.

Rather than offering straightforward answers, 507 presents an enigmatic title and a symbolic language …

Of Primal Substance, Yueting Wu

Masters Theses

This collection of writings arises from encounters with intensity and embodied practice — moments that reveal the body’s capacity for transformation.

Last year, I experienced ego death The intensity of the vibration and movement evoked deconstruction, reconstruction, and liberation. It felt like a vibrational reorganization of my physical body and all surrounding matter. During this past summer, I started embodied practices. One day, I held hands with a group of people and slowly walked from the beach into the ocean. It took us one hour. One evening, I was alone in the studio with a huge window facing the jungle. …

Memeganda, Zhengxiang Huang May 2025

Memeganda, Zhengxiang Huang

Masters Theses

MEMEGANDA investigates how meme culture and speculative design can transform everyday objects into covert communication tools under authoritarian censorship. In environments where digital expression is heavily restricted, memes—often dismissed as entertainment—emerge as a powerful medium of resistance. This thesis reimagines physical artifacts such as delivery helmets, receipt printers, and hotel carts as vehicles for hidden messages, bypassing digital surveillance systems. Drawing on personal experience, historical symbolism, and global examples like the White Paper Movement and banned protest songs, the project centers blue-collar workers as unlikely messengers of dissent. By embedding emotional, political, and satirical content into mundane urban materials, MEMEGANDA …

How To Walk On Water: Living Through The Absurd, Esther Du May 2025

How To Walk On Water: Living Through The Absurd, Esther Du

Masters Theses

Set in a speculative world submerged by water, this thesis constructs a fragmented, nonlinear narrative that reflects on survival, memory, and displacement in the aftermath of catastrophe. Through three interwoven chapters—The Outcast, The Researcher, and The World—the project explores the emotional and psychological landscapes of individuals navigating a post-apocalyptic existence where the past is irretrievable and the future uncertain. Using an interdisciplinary form of visual storytelling, writing, and sound, the work draws from personal experience and collective trauma to examine how people reconstruct identity and meaning after loss. Rather than offering a definitive answer to existential …

Tierras Celosas, Gery Vargas May 2025

Tierras Celosas, Gery Vargas

Masters Theses

Tierras Celosas is a field study, a symposium presentation at Brown University, a belief system. It is a machine-object, a cosmotechnic tension, an ontological contradiction. It embodies resistance and release, failure, and reclamation.

Breathing With Water; Rebuilding Coastal Connections In Busan, Seri Kwon May 2025

Breathing With Water; Rebuilding Coastal Connections In Busan, Seri Kwon

Masters Theses

What does it mean to live on the edge? Every year, sea level is rising and massive storms are hitting the peninsula of South Korea. With each catastrophic typhoon comes significant social damage due to relocations and loss of life. To these disastrous events, the city seems to have only one response: tetrapods and sea walls. This defensive approach has blinded the public from the severity of the looming climate crisis and kept them ignorant of more productive ways to manage the shoreline.

This thesis explores an alternative narrative for this coast. Working within a 75 year timeline, I propose …

Poetic Pragmatism, Nino N. Chambers May 2025

Poetic Pragmatism, Nino N. Chambers

Masters Theses

Making space more useful, comfortable, and human through the design of furniture, is an inherently pragmatic discipline. Yet, even within the constraints of existing production processes, the daily use of furniture objects offers opportunities for long-lasting poetic expression. Poetic pragmatism celebrates the complexity that arises from simplicity and attention to shifts in atmosphere.

This body of work invites a closer consideration of both materiality and methods of production in the objects we choose to live with. By intentionally embracing negative space and connections, these designs exercise subtlety and restraint, serving not as declarations but as companions—quiet tools that foster deeper, …

Out Of Consumption Out Of Context Into Recursion, Xubai Li May 2025

Out Of Consumption Out Of Context Into Recursion, Xubai Li

Masters Theses

In a world where consumption is inevitable, our choices define us. However, the situation is never so black and white. The boundary between commodification and authentic representations has grown increasingly opaque, layered with irony, sincerity, critique, and tribute.

Within this complexity lies not a clear resistance, but an opportunity: to embrace the oscillation and locate one’s authenticity through metamodernist sensibilities.

My process begins by interrogating the accepted—may it be a product, a technique, or a medium. I deconstruct, fragment, and remove it from its original context—both physically and conceptually.

What emerges is a recursive reconstruction, where origin and iteration intertwine, …

Rural Dreams, Zongda Wu May 2025

Rural Dreams, Zongda Wu

Masters Theses

With the rapid development of urbanization in China, people's connection with nature has weakened, leading to an increasingly common phenomenon of nature-deficit disorder. The high-paced, information-saturated lifestyle of cities has further reduced people’s sensitivity to natural rhythms. This is especially true for the younger generation, who are accustomed to fast, dense information flows and find it difficult to slow down and engage meaningfully with nature, even when visiting rural areas.

This study uses the ruins of Puji Temple, located about 50 miles from downtown Beijing, to explore how spatial design can offer urban youth opportunities to reconnect with nature while …

Buddha, Resituated, Min Sun May 2025

Buddha, Resituated, Min Sun

Masters Theses

The Asian Arts Room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art presents significant cultural artifacts in a minimalist, neutral environment that disconnects them from their original historical and spatial contexts. By proposing display techniques that emphasize the origin and background of objects, it asks whether audiences from diverse cultural backgrounds can be enabled to connect empathetically with and learn from the heritage represented by these objects displayed out of context.

This thesis explores how exhibition design can reframe decontextualized artifacts to restore cultural meaning. By unpacking the room chronologically and geographically, and drawing from the spatial language of the Yungang Grottoes, …

Stranded In Time: Reawakening The Crook Point Bascule Bridge Through Temporality, Zhipeng Wang May 2025

Stranded In Time: Reawakening The Crook Point Bascule Bridge Through Temporality, Zhipeng Wang

Masters Theses

Many urban structures fall into a “stranded” state—physically present, yet socially invisible. The Crook Point Bridge in Providence is a prime example: a decommissioned piece of industrial infrastructure, too large and symbolically heavy to vanish entirely, yet gradually fading from public awareness. This thesis explores how temporary, experience-driven interventions can reawaken the social relevance of such neglected spaces. Rather than proposing a fixed future, the project seeks to prompt public reconsideration through fleeting spatial experiences that require no irreversible transformation. The first intervention utilizes balloons—fragile, inflated, and inevitably collapsing—to embody the theme of accelerated disappearance, echoing how memories fade faster …

Unframing Venus: Redefining The Female Nude, Sage Leafsong May 2025

Unframing Venus: Redefining The Female Nude, Sage Leafsong

Masters Theses

Historically women have been excluded from becoming acclaimed artists due to societal, educational, and institutional barriers. This exclusion has had many repercussions in Western art––in a large part it has made celebrated male artists the norm, while celebrated female artists are the exception.

These same barriers often precluded women from depicting themselves in art. When women did paint, they were encouraged to paint domestic scenes such as flowers or still lifes and were prohibited from studying or depicting the nude form. This gap of representation was filled by male artists who have felt empowered to sexualize women with no consequence. …

Shape Shifter, Hyomin Kim May 2025

Shape Shifter, Hyomin Kim

Masters Theses

Our perception of the world is not fixed; it is shaped by experience. Through practices like meditation, Buddhist rituals, and even altered states of consciousness, the mind has the capacity to shift how we see, feel, and exist in the present. Mindfulness, for me, has been both a refuge from suffering and a means of survival—an awareness cultivated through personal experiences. Yet, in daily life, we often detach from the present, rushing past what is right in front of us. If design has the power to shape perception, can it also serve as a tool to guide presence?

My thesis …

Ecospiritual Entanglement, Ali Vedad Yüner May 2025

Ecospiritual Entanglement, Ali Vedad Yüner

Masters Theses

Land breeds culture. It gives us the resources to thrive, and in that process we establish a relationship with its constituents. With a multitude of beings inhabiting the land, a complex web of relationships develop. Biology describes these relationships as food webs; the mass entanglement of organisms in a manner that each organism nourishes the other. These webs are not just mere scientific structures but rather an interpretation of existential connections that every organism in the world, humans included, are indebted to. Food webs are the first stepping stone in the formation of culture, as they account for the engagement …

Of Dolls And Jewels : Keeping As A Strategy Of Care And Belonging, Yuqi Fan May 2025

Of Dolls And Jewels : Keeping As A Strategy Of Care And Belonging, Yuqi Fan

Masters Theses

In this thesis, I will discuss the psychology behind object attachment in the doll-keeping subculture by integrating doll language into contemporary jewelry. I researched the Chinese term “Pi” as an accurate way of explaining how doll-keepers are attached to their dolls. In this 21st century, the widespread use of social media and AI technologies have deepened people's reliance on virtual spaces, leading to emotional detachment in our society. Adopting the concept of “Pi” into contemporary jewelry, which encourages a shift in focus towards external objects, the practice of doll-keeping becomes a form of self-care that compensates for our current loneliness …

'Manch' Beyond - Museum, Dhwani Bapna May 2025

'Manch' Beyond - Museum, Dhwani Bapna

Masters Theses

In contemporary India, the museum remains a symbol of cultural prestige, yet according to national cultural surveys, fewer than 1% of Indians visit museums annually, a statistic that reflects not only structural and spatial exclusions, but also psychological barriers shaped by class, language, and institutional codes of conduct. These institutions are far from neutral: they embed expectations about how to see, move, and behave, privileging a didactic framework. In the absence of intimacy, dialogue, and belonging, the museum becomes a space visited, not inhabited.

Rather than viewing space as a container for artifacts, this thesis reimagines space itself as an …

Time In Architecture, Minho Kwon May 2025

Time In Architecture, Minho Kwon

Masters Theses

This project explores how the environment and time interact with architecture, proposing the potential to foster a deep connection between people and space by using time as a shared interactive factor.

Furthermore, this project seeks not only to explore the accumulation of time within architecture itself, but also to consider its relationship with the surrounding environment.
