Development Of A Four Channel Cloud Nucleus Spectrometer., Larry Allan Brunner Jan 1974

Development Of A Four Channel Cloud Nucleus Spectrometer., Larry Allan Brunner

Masters Theses

"A four-channel vertical flow thermal diffusion chamber for use as a cloud nucleus counter is described. The droplets in each channel are photographically counted. The instrument provides about 20 seconds of available growth time, which enables better distinction of active droplets than does ii the conventional horizontal chamber. Droplet growth calculations show that the uncertainty in droplet count due to limited available growth time is negligible for supersaturations above 0.3% but increases rapidly as the supersaturation is lowered below 0.3%. For example, at 0.1% supersaturation, the uncertainty is -27% to +38% in the drop count. The possible error in supersaturation …

Combined Forced And Free Convection On A Vertical Cylinder And Flat Plate, Aleksandros Mucoglu Jan 1974

Combined Forced And Free Convection On A Vertical Cylinder And Flat Plate, Aleksandros Mucoglu

Masters Theses

"In the study of fluid flow over heated surfaces, it is customary to neglect the effects of buoyancy force when the flow is horizontal. However, such a practice is not justified when the forced flow is along an inclined or a vertical surface, because under these conditions the buoyancy force modifies considerably the flow field and hence the heat transfer rate from the surface. Such a flow is termed combined forced and free convective flow.

The present study is concerned with the effects of buoyancy force on forced convection along an isothermal vertical cylinder and a flat plate. This type …

A Systems Approach To Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Training Programs, Jesse Michael Haverstick Jan 1974

A Systems Approach To Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Training Programs, Jesse Michael Haverstick

Masters Theses

"The evaluation of the effectiveness of training programs has long been recognized as a necessity in determining the allocation of investment. However, much of industry, today, still does not use an easily administered, systematic, and reliable method for determining training program effectiveness for their salaried (managerial) personnel. It is easily seen that determining training program effectiveness is not a one-shot, one-time event, but a continual process, whose aim, ultimately, is increased productivity. For the effectiveness of a training program to be adequately monitored, these four areas should be measured: (1) trainee attitude, (2) learning, (3) behavior change, and (4) productivity …

Possible Damage Mechanism In Dresden 2 Class Boiling Water Reactor Fuel, Donald Lee Moffett Jan 1974

Possible Damage Mechanism In Dresden 2 Class Boiling Water Reactor Fuel, Donald Lee Moffett

Masters Theses

"A thermal hydraulic analysis of a typical hot channel of a Dresden 2 class boiling water reactor is studied for possible severe local overheating. The COBRA-II thermal hydraulic analysis code is modified to include critical heat flux calculations for each subchannel. The effects of flow distribution, inlet mass velocity variations, dimensional tolerances, enrichment variations, and input parameters are examined in detail. Bulk channel results are in good agreement with the published data, but the assembly wall side of the corner fuel rod has a minimum critical heat flux ratio of less than unity for a number of the situations examined. …

Predicting Delinquent Sub-Types With The Social History Questionnaire, Charles S. Sulcer Jan 1974

Predicting Delinquent Sub-Types With The Social History Questionnaire, Charles S. Sulcer

Masters Theses

A major problem encountered in the juvenile courts concerns the large number of young offenders placed on probation, as well as the seriousness of their violations. Representative studies by Jenkins and Glickman (1947), Hathaway and Monachesi (1953), and Shinohara and Jenkins (1967) have pointed out the complexities of delinquent behavior by indicating that most legal authorities are often unable to determine who will repeat illegal acts.

This problem necessitates some objective approach toward identifying potential repeaters and non-repeaters. Such a technique would be useful in studying the early stages of delinquent behavior and provide a means of studying the growing …

The Influence Of Henry Clay Upon Abraham Lincoln Regarding Lines Of Argument On The Slavery Issue, Kenneth E. Aubens

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was: To discover the influence of Henry Clay upon Abraham Lincoln regarding lines of argument on the slavery issue. The method of procedure entailed the following: gathering all available materials related to the problem; organizing the gathered materials into the headings of Henry Clay on the slavery issue; Abraham Lincoln on the slavery issue; and Abraham Lincoln's acknowledgements to Henry Clay on the slavery issue; analyzing the materials according to support for previous writings; contradiction of previous writings; and supplement to previous writings; reporting the findings of the study; and summarizing the findings leading to …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Capabilities Of Three Stereo Radar Techniques When Operating In The Presence Of System Errors, George L. Bair Jan 1974

A Comparative Analysis Of The Capabilities Of Three Stereo Radar Techniques When Operating In The Presence Of System Errors, George L. Bair

Masters Theses

"Three stereo radar techniques for producing stereo images from which topographic data and maps may be obtained are described and their performance in the presence of system errors is determined. The techniques are: an improved single flight technique which uses a combination of two antenna beam characteristics which permits terrain illumination from nearly the same aircraft position, a previously proposed single flight technique which uses two horizontal linear arrays generating vertical fan beams at different azimuth angles, and an existing two flight technique which uses a horizontal array generating a side-looking fan beam.

Error analyses are performed to determine the …

Bidding And Negotiation Of Government Funded Contracts With Inflationary Considerations., David Thurman Hearst Jan 1974

Bidding And Negotiation Of Government Funded Contracts With Inflationary Considerations., David Thurman Hearst

Masters Theses

"The traditional government contract type has played an important role in the economy of the United States. In its most used type, that of fixed price, it represents a stabilizing factor in the cycles of the business world. However, recently this type of contract has been affected by the nation's most recent plague, double-digit inflation.

Inflation attacks almost all phases of stability in the economy and in contract negotiations and bidding techniques. It erodes the monetary unit of the economy, distorts forecasting models, and creates potential ruin for contractors due to uncertainty in costs.

Research pertaining to government funded contracts …

The Social History Questionnaire As Related To Length Of Stay In Psychotherapy: A Cross-Validation, Robert Crowley Jan 1974

The Social History Questionnaire As Related To Length Of Stay In Psychotherapy: A Cross-Validation, Robert Crowley

Masters Theses

The purpose of the present study was to cross-validate the Terminator-Remainer subscale of the Social History Questionnaire (Jachim, 1972). The subjects were 72 clients from a mental health clinic. Two groups were used in the study (N = 72 and N = 36). Both groups were divided into Terminators and Remainers.

A point biserial correlation between the score on the Terminator-Remainer subscale and the criterion groups was significant (N = 72: rpb = .24, p < .05; N = 36: rpb = .38, p < .05). Predictive validity was established.

No relationship was found between being a Terminator or a Remainer and sex (x2 = 0.07, N …

Lawrence Yates Sherman: United States Senator From Illinois, 1913-1921, Jerome Bentley Holstein

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to consider the political career of Lawrence Yates Sherman. Sherman, who served as United States Senator from Illinois, 1913-1921, was a colorful individual in Congress during one of the Republic's more turbulent periods. As a United States Senator, Sherman dealt with many vital issues. However, Senator Sherman is best-known for his "irreconcilable" position on the question of ratification of the Treaty of the League of Nations.

Actually, Sherman's political career was much more extensive than merely opposition to the League of Nations. Sherman was the "favorite-son" candidate of Illinois for the nomination of the …
