The long-horned beetles, family Cerambycidae, form a large, colorful, often-collected and well-known group. However, the drab, more primitive subfamilies, Parandrinae, Prioninae, Aseminae, and Spondylinae, are much less well-known although they often appear in collections.

In this paper, the author has attempted to list those species of primitive cerambycids which occur or are likely to occur within the State of Illinois. Keys, illustrations, descriptions, and distribution maps have been developed to aid in identification. The list and keys should be applicable to any midwestern state with the addition or deletion of a few species.

Studies On The Effects Of Toxic Materials On The Respiration Rate Of Tubificidae, Richard A. Sikora

A study was made to determine the effect of lead, nickel and pentachlorophenol, at varying pH levels, on the respiration rate of this family of aquatic oligochaetes. Respiration was measured as the ul. of oxygen consumer per mg. of live tissue per hour of exposure.

Worms were found to decrease their rate of respiration in the presence of lead nitrate. This was demonstrated at three pH levels: 6.5, 7.5 and 8.5. It was concluded that this drop was due to the action of lead on the enzymes of the metabolic systems and on the characteristic of lead which stimulates the …

"When a transistor is subjected to neutron irradiation, a component of base current proportional to neutron fluence is induced. From the effects of annealing on the base and collector currents, the conclusion was drawn that there is an apparent difference in the annealing characteristics between the neutral and the space-charge regions of the semiconductor device. This study of the anomalous annealing indicates that the neutron-induced component of base current is a result of one, or a combination, of the following mechanisms: a quasi-tunneling recombination phenomena in the emitter-base space-charge region, or an influence of the p-n junction electric field on …

"The object of this investigation was to study the mass and heat transport phenomena through porous, water-repellent membranes. The investigation concerned the rate of vaporization of salt water at a porous membrane surface, mass transfer of vapor through the pores of the membrane, condensation of vapor on the other surface of the membrane in contact with a coolant (fresh water), and the undesired heat transfer by conduction through the membrane. "A new approach to preconcentration of trace amounts of elements has been demonstrated whereby traces of metals tied up as chelates are coprecipitated on a column of solid organic material. Complete coprecipitation was found to occur within very narrow pH ranges, thereby allowing separation as well as concentration of the elements by careful adjustment of acidity and concentration of chelating agent. The separation is based on the difference in stability constants of the metal chelates. Preliminary studies with different physical forms of the carrier precipitate, indicate adsorptive processes could play a significant role in the mechanism of the column-coprecipitation process. …

"A survey of the ability of basidiomycetes to convert tryptophan, tryptamine and indole acetic acid to other acidic indoles has been made.

The product formed from tryptamine by Tricholoma nudum was identified as indole acetic acid. The product formed by Cantharellus cibarius from D-tryptophan was identified as N-acetyl-D-tryptophan. The products were purified and identified by means of paper chromatography, thin layer chromatography, infrared spectroscopy and melting points.

The conversion of tryptamine and D-tryptophan was also studied in cultures of Leucopaxillus paradoxus, Hygrophorus conicus and Naucoria confragosa. H. conicus, L. paradoxus and N. confragosa transformed tryptamine and indole acetic acid into …

"The main objectives of this investigation were the recovery and partial characterization of organic micropollutants from Missouri subsurface waters and the evaluation of the number of filters in series required for effective removal of organic materials from water using the Carbon Adsorption Method.

The organics were recovered from a spring and two deep wells using three large capacity (1. 5 cu. ft.) activated carbon filters in series. Chloroform and ethanol were employed as primary elutants, but acetone and benzene were also investigated. Characterization was by organoleptic, chemical, and biological determinations, toxicity measurements, and solubility partitioning.

The presence of neurosecretory cells in the suprapharyngeal ganglia of Lumbricus terrestris has been well established (B. and E. Scharrer, 1937). Since these cells may well be the only source of hormones in this organism (B. Scharrer, 1959), the question arises as to their role in the animal's regulation of metabolism The particular aspect of this problem investigated here concerns the effect of these neurosecretory substances on the blood glucose levels in L. terrestris.

The objectives of this investigation were to develop: 1) compounds similar to hydroxy urea, a compound known to have anti-tumor activity, 2) a method to prepare α-aminohydroxamic acids and to study the complexes of these compounds with several metal ions, 3) computer programs to determine the pK's¹ of the hydroxamic acids and the stepwise stability constants² for the ligands and several metal ions.

The purpose of this investigation was to differentiate Staphylococcus aureus phage type 42D from Staphylococcus epidermidis.

The investigation involved four approaches to this differentiation. The first was a selective screening technique on specific media to point out physical and biochemical characteristics and to demonstrate the presence of specific enzymes. The second was a drug survey which was used to show basic susceptibility and resistance to ten different antibiotics.
