Introduction

Opilionids (Arachnida: Opiliones) are arachnids that have such descriptive common names as harvestmen or daddy longlegs. In the summer and early autumn opilionids become a conspicuous component of the invertebrate fauna; however, as common as these animals are, little attention has been paid to their behavior. Most published research on opilionids deals with their taxonomy.

The intraspecific interactions of opilionids is a significant area or ethology that needs careful examination. Intraspecific interactions fall into three categories reproductive, aggressive, and cooperative behaviors. A clinical survey of eight clinicians, drawing from their experiences with thirteen cases, was conducted to explore familial influences on the formation or maintenance of gender dysphoria in females so as to result in transsexualism. In preparation for disclosing and discussing these findings three areas are reviewed: (1) historical references to transsexualism from ancient and modern cultures; (2) differential definitions of transvestism, homosexuality, and transsexualism; and (3) theoretical perspectives on the etiology and phenomenology of female transsexualism.

Blood Parasites Of Squirrels From Coles And Lake Counties In Illinois, Nicholas I. Obiri

Hepatozoon and microfilariae are described from the blood of fox and gray squirrels captured in Coles and Lake Counties in Illinois during 1976 and 1977. The hepatozoon species is identified as Hepatozoon griseisciuri on the basis of parasite morphology and hosts. A higher rate of infection (35.7% : 11.1%) was observed in gray squirrels than in fox squirrels and more adults were infected than juveniles. No microfilariae were found in gray squirrels but fox squirrels had a 57.1% infection rate with no difference based on age. The observed microfilariae are similar to that described by Davidson from Maryland gray squirrels …

A stream survey of Riley Creek in Coles County Illinois, was undertaken to determine ecological trends and the qualitative status of the aquatic community throughout the course of the stream.

The survey encompassed the entire length of Riley Creek from the area of its status as an intermittant waterway to its confluence with Cassel Creek. Sampling periods included the months of April, May, June, July, October and November.

Macroinvertebrate collections were made at six locations along the stream approximately equidistant from each other. The organisms were assigned tolerance levels as designated by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

Eremosphaera viridis de Bary was studied with light microscope techniques to determine the method of cytokinesis and to explain the ontogeny of the membranous ring separating the mature daughter cells in the intact sporangium.

It is proposed that cytokinesis in this organism is phylogenetically advanced and that the separation of mature daughter cells involves the sequential deposition of two cell walls. The first wall develops centripetally by the addition of membrane subunits. The resulting cleavage furrow is oriented by transverse microtubules found along the cell division plane. In an attempt to better understand the host-parasite relationship of the alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and Bathyplectes curculionis (Thomson) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), all life stages of the parasite were monitored throughout the spring. Sampling was conducted on a degree day basis from early March to late May in an alfalfa field in Mason County, Illinois.

Dissections of host alfalfa weevil larvae revealed 2nd and 3rd host instars were preferred larvae for oviposition. Peak parasite densities were found to precede peak total host larval densities, but coincided with peak densities of the preferred 2nd and 3rd instars. Larger host …

Aquatic plant communities of east-central Illinois were studied during the late summers of 1971 and 1976. Frequencies, relative frequencies and frequency of dominance were calculated for the various taxa. At the pond level, changes in the flora over the 5-year span have taken place, usually consisting of the addition or subtraction of one species. Overall, however, it was found that the aquatic community has remained relatively static, as has the percentage of ponds lacking aquatic plants. Factors influencing distributions and sterility are discussed and it was concluded that all the factors play varying roles, but no one factor or combination …

Cercis canadensis L. (redbud) seeds have been shown to require both scarification and stratification before germination occurs. Seeds which were leached prior to the scarification-stratification treatments were found to germinate more quickly, and CaSO₄ solution was found to enhance germination. However, the percent germination remained approximately the same and leaching failed to substitute for the stratification requirement. Extraction studies indicated that germination inhibitors were present in scarified-non stratified seeds, however, the presence of germination promoters in scarified-stratified seeds could not be demonstrated. The pre-adult viability of four pure strains and two hybrid strains was determined for Drosophila melanogaster. The data fail to show significant mortality and the ratios of the duration of the three different stages remained approximately constant. There are many factors which have been found to affect survivorship; one factor is density. As density of population within a limited and closed universe increases, the rate of mortality would increase and viability would generally decrease. However, our densities were well within the range having no effect on viability. Under the conditions these experiments were performed, no genetic or environmental factors …

The benthic insect populations from Lake Charleston and the Embarras River above and below Lake Charleston were examined twice monthly for seasonal differences in number of organisms, number of taxa and species diversity from October 13, 1976 to February 16, 1977. The water quality parameters of alkalinity, carbon dioxide, dissolved oxygen, pH and temperature were also examined for each site to determine if any parameter showed a sufficient deviation as to exert an influence on the benthic insect populations.
