The relationship of seasons and blood pressure was investigated. The individuals in the sample groups were of two types: normal individuals and individuals who have been diagnosed as hypertensives and under medical supervision. This was a seasonal study? measurements were taken during midsummer and early fall, 1979. Factors constituting the variable for individual differences included: sex, age, genetic factors, diet, general body build and managerial vs, laborer workload.

Individual differences were controlled by use of a randomized complete block design with each individual constituting a block. Season was the treatment factor, and individual was the blocking factor. Measurements were taken …

The Effects Of Insulin On Hepatic Glucocorticoid Receptor Content In The Diabetic Rat, Jeffrey John Yourick

The streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat liver was analyzed for glucocorticoid receptor (GCR) content by a saturation and Scatchard analysis. A preliminary study was performed on the stabilization of the cytoplasmic GCR in a frozen cytosol preparation. The addition of 10% glycerol (V/V), 10 mM sodium molybdate, and 0.2 mg/ml trypsin inhibitor resulted in an approximate 20% sparing of GCR content upon freezing.

The hepatic GCR content of diabetic rats was significantly decreased from a control level of 0.1667 ± 0.0142 pmol/mg protein to 0.1094 ± 0.007 pmol/mg protein. Insulin replacement therapy to the diabetic rat dramatically increased the hepatic GCR content. …

Prostaglandin E₂ (PGE₂) was topically administered to perforated rat tympanic membranes in an attempt to facilitate regrowth of the membranes. Every 24 hours for the first four postperforation days, two groups of tympanic membranes were processed and examined histologically for differences between PGE₂ treated and control animals.

At 24 hours postperforation granulocyte infiltration at the perforation site was greater in the test animals. By 48 hours blood clots were larger in PGE₂ treated animals. Finally, the epithelium was thinner in test animals than in control animals at 96 hours.

Recent evidence suggests that a bilateral, progressive sensorineural hearing loss is associated with diabetes mellitus in humans. The microangiopathy presumedly leading to this loss seems to be similar to microvascular changes leading to this loss seems to be similar to microvascular changes leading to renal and retinal deterioration. A total of twenty-four pairs of temporal bones from two diabetic, and one non-diabetic lines of the Chinese hamster were processed and evaluated for their total auditory histopathology. Hematoxylin and eosin serial sections demonstrated a mean otopathological involvement 5.6 times greater for diabetic animals compared to non-diabetic animals. Introduction of the Louisiana red swamp crawfish, Procambarus clarkii (Girard), into Spanish waters was precipitated by depletion of the native Spanish crayfish, Austropotamobius pallipes (Lereboullet). Final collapse of the original crayfish inudstry in Spain was caused by the fungal plague, Aphanomycosis astaci. The introduction of P. clarkii is a biological success. The reproductive range of this crawfish now extends into Coto Donana National Park. Concern over the potential negative impact from the crawfish has been expressed. Learned helplessness is a psychological concept that describes the subsequent escape-avoidance behavior of experimental subjects who are exposed to uncontrollable stressors. Subjects after treatment are unable to respond in situations where escape is possible. Two major theorists, Seligman and Weiss, have proposed explanations concerning the phenomena. Seligman feels that the subject is unable to respond due to the fact that the exposure to an uncontrollable stressor has caused him to learn to be "helpless". The Effect Of Repeated Spermiation On Sperm Density In The American Toad (Bufo Americanus), Michael A. Kriz

Bufo americanus (American toad) responds to LH-RF injections by releasing sperm into the cloaca. An ANOVA test (repeated measures) was used to determine that spermiation number and body size but not frequency of injection affected sperm density. The affects of body size on sperm density were that large toads produced the highest sperm densities, followed by the medium and then the small toads. Sperm density decreased with repeated spermiations which could correlate with the explosive breeding pattern of the American toad.

Studies of surface coal mined lands have focused primarily on older lands mined prior to the enactment of reclamation legislation. Current laws will require extensive grading, soil replacement and revegetation. In order to more effectively reforest these lands, I have evaluated sites planted to woody species during the past decade.

The vegetational characteristics, as well as both avaian and small mammal populations of several reclaimed surface mined areas, differing in age and reclamation procedures, were compared. Success of planted trees ranged from 50 to 91% and survival varied with the species planted. There was no relationship between tree survival and …

Six varieties of cool season turfgrasses were exposed to simulated acid rainfall with treatments consisting of a sulfuric acid solution, a nitric acid solution, and a 50-50 mixture of both. Each solution was used to make "acid rain" of pHs 3.0, 2.5, 2.0, and 1.5.

Height measurements showed decreases in growth throughout the experiment for all treatments except the nitric and 50-50 acid treatments at pHs of 2.0 and 1.5, which maintain fairly constant growth. Analysis of nitrate, phosphorous, and potassium levels in the soil indicated heavy leaching of the nitrates and potassium from most soil samples, which probably account …

"The static fatigue, flexural strength and chemical corrosion of three commercially prepared, polycrystalline aluminas, two of orthopedic implant grade, were measured in demineralized water at 37°C and 70°C. The dissolution of a Ca-rich impurity phase, probably a glass, segregated at the grain boundaries and external surface, appears at least partially responsible for the significant difference in static fatigue of these three aluminas. The present results indicate that the minimum static fatigue in demineralized water, and the highest flexural strength in demineralized water and HF solution are both achieved by the alumina characterized by a low concentration of Ca at the …

The Rhizobium trifolii polysaccharides from SU843 and mutants--HC843(pBR1AN), HC843, 8002--in which the sym plasmid is replaced, absent, or mutated by transposon Tn5 were isolated. The surface polysaccharides of genetically altered mutants were compared quantitatively and qualitatively with one another and with the parent strain. The interpretation of these results is discussed in relation to the function of Rhizobium surface polysaccharides in the symbiotic process. Charleston, Illinois, a city located in east-central Illinois, recently implemented a new concept in a raw water system. Due to storage capacity-sedimentation problems in the old Lake Charleston-Embarras River raw water supply, the Charleston Pump Storage Reservoir was constructed. The new system involved building a dike separating the Lake Charleston impoundment from the Embarras River. Water to increase the storage capacity of the reservoir can now be selectively pumped into the impoundment from the river.

Lake Charleston, Illinois was electrofished to determine the status of the largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides, Lacepede) population after its reconstruction into a pump storage reservoir. The changes observed were an increased rate of growth of the initial year class, increased average growth increment of older bass, and a more abundant bass population. Factors which may have influenced increased growth were decreased turbidity, alkalinity, and increased water level. There is a possibility the increase in water level led to an increase in terrestrial invertebrates as a food source, and increased spawning substrate and cover due to submerged terrestrial vegetation. …

Ethylnitrosourea (ENU) is very strongly mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic in mice. In the present study ENU was used to induce germ cell damage in the mouse testis. Mice were given single injections of vehicle, 50, 100, or 200 milligrams of ENU per kilogram of body weight and killed at various times over a fifteen week period. Microscopic examination of the testes showed that extensive killing of spermatogonial cells and therefore maturation depletion had occurred in the seminiferous tubules. The histopathology was dose dependent and the testicular weight decreased with an increasing ENU concentration.

High achieving fifth grade students were taught three alternate multiplication algorithms: Hutchings low stress, Gelocian lattice, and partial products (distributive algorithm using indentation). The two independent variables were the four algorithms (three alternate plus traditional) and three problem array sizes (3 x 2, 3, and 4 factors). The three dependent variables were percent accuracy, rate correct, and rate incorrect. A multi-element manipulation design across phases was used varying type of calculation procedure within sessions and type of problem array across sessions. Gluconeogenesis is a normal physiological response of an individual to low blood glucose levels by which proteins are utilized in order to synthesize new glucose. Gluconeogenic rates in diabetic and normal Chinese hamsters were measured, on four different occasions over a 24 hour period, by injecting a radio-labelled precursor (¹⁴C-lactate) into the animals. Then blood was tested for incorporation of the label into glucose. In the fed state, gluconeogenesis shows a circadian change in nondiabetic hamsters as well as in diabetic hamsters, with the diabetic hamsters showing a significantly greater gluconeogenic rate than the non-diabetic hamsters for every …

The purpose of this study was to examine the difference in self-concept, physical self-concept, personality constructs, irrationality and social anxiety in two populations of alcoholics differing in length of sobriety. The interrelationships between the aforementioned variables were also examined. Multivariate analysis of individual test means was unable to demonstrate a difference between groups. Discriminative analysis found Identity and Physical Self subscales from the Tennessee Self Concept Scale were able to discriminate between groups. It measured the antecedents and consequences of responses made by children to certain problematic situations often present in free-play situations. The objective of the study was to evaluate the validity of Albert Ellis 's A-B-C paradigm of psychopathology. The A (negative life change), B (irrational thinking and negative self-statements), and C (maladaptive arousal: depression, anxiety, and anger) components of Ellis's paradigm were assessed of 40 disturbed outpatients. The resultant data were subjected to a correlational analysis. The analysis indicated negative life change (A) and irrational thinking (B) are additive in their relation to maladaptive arousal (C), and negative self-statements are more strongly associated with maladaptive arousal than irrational thinking. An ossuary consisting of 53 individuals from the single component, Late Woodland Wolf Phase site of LaSalle in northern Ohio is analyzed with respect to paleodemography, paleopathology, and metric and non-metric variants. Because of the small sample size, a limited amount of paleodemografrhic information was obtainable. It was determined, however, that approximately 32 adults and 21 subadults were present. Of the 21 sexable mature specimens, 61.9% (13) were ascertained to be males, while 38.1% (8) were classified as females employing the femoral shaft circumference technique of Black. Diabetic complications in nnn-insulin dependent tissues have led < researchers to investigate causitive parameters at the biochemical level. The purpose of this project was to measure glycosaminoglycans in diabetic and normal human plasma and to investigate any changes in glycosaminoglycan content for possible roles in diabetic complications.

Glycosaminoglycan content was measured by three methods; the alcian blue assay, protein-bound hexosamine, and total glycosaminoglycan isolate methods. Results show IDDM plasma to have significantly increased levels of glycosaminoglycans as assayed by the alcian blue test and protein-bound hexosamine. The total glycosaminoglycan isolate method did not correlate with either of the two other methods. No difference was demonstrated between normal and NIDDM plasma glycosamino glycan content.

The protein-bound hexosamine and the alcian blue assays correlate with age and type of diabetes. No differences between the sexes were demonstrated. Of particular interest are …
