In my thesis I examine the portrayal of women characters by two post-colonial Indian writers, Attia Hosain and Salman Rushdie, respectively in Sunlight on a Broken Column (1961) and Midnight's Children (1980). I show how Hosain's and Rushdie's ideas of identity, nation and nationality influence their depiction of these women characters.

3-Phenylbenzofuranone, when deprotonated with sodium hydride, forms an extended enolate system which, when treated with excess alkyl chloroformates, affords only oxygen-acylated products, as opposed to the usually desired carbon-functionalized derivatives. It was discovered that such molecules, when treated with a catalytic amount of 4- (N, N-dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP), rearrange quantitatively to the carbon acylated isomers.

These migrations, which are accompanied by a deep blue color, are proposed to involve a reactive intermediate. This intermediate, which is postulated as an ion pair charge transfer (IPCT) complex, has been closely studied in order to gain a better understanding of the …

This qualitative study examines the influence of occupational therapists’ worldview on clinical reasoning and action. Recent clinical reasoning research has determined that this complex and multi-faceted process is more than applied theory. Some scholars in occupational therapy have identified intrapersonal factors as influencing clinical reasoning. However, the nature and role of the intrapersonal factors in clinical reasoning remains unclear. To increase understanding of this phenomenon, semi-structured interviews were conducted with expert therapists. Adolescents with chronic diseases must accomplish the management of their healthcare decisions and practices; those with epilepsy also deal with the uncertainty of seizure disorders and the stigma linked to this disease. This secondary analysis of data examined psychosocial variables for adolescents with epilepsy within the developmental-contextual framework proposed by Hohnbeck and Shapera (1999). No statistically significant differences were found between the mean Piers-Harris scores, self-assessment scores on the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) or the Revised Family APGAR for the subgroups of males, females, younger (9 to 11.44 years) or older (11.45 to 14 years) adolescents. Normal pregnancy is a hypercoaguable state in and of itself. Evidence has shown that platelets may play a role in the pathogenesis and complications of preeclampsia. The objective of this study is to compare the presence of circulating activated platelets in normal pregnancy and preeclampsia. The subjects’ blood was fixed, washed, incubated with antibodies (which detect platelets and activation of platelets), and evaluated using flow cytometry. Results of this study showed pregnant subjects (normal and preeclamptic) to have an increased percentage of activated platelets over non-pregnant subjects. The exotic zooplankter Daphnia lumholtzi is believed to have been introduced into Fairfield Lake, TX in 1983. Since introduction, D. lumholtzi has spread throughout the Midwest and Southeast United States. Due to its large head and tail spines, it may be less susceptible than native species to predation and therefore pose a threat to aquatic ecosystems. Development of management practices calls for study of the dispersal and potential impact of D. lumholtzi on invaded ecosystems.

This thesis examines how socio-historical influences shape the protagonists of Virginia Woolf’s The Voyage Out (1915) and Mrs. Dalloway (1925)-- Rachel Vinrace and Clarissa Dalloway. During the writing of these two novels, attitudes about roles for women before and after World War I shifted as pre-war domestic strife was replaced by a post-war push to return to normalcy. Throughout the period, imperialist ideology demanded that women conform to traditional gender roles by marrying and reproducing. Woolf depicts this pressure as it affects her two protagonists.

Previous studies have shown that apoE is highly expressed in human and mouse olfactory bulbs. ApoE deficiency in apolipoprotein E knockout (apoE-KO) mice leads to considerable delay in olfactory nerve repair and deficits in olfactory functioning. Olfactory function is necessary for a number of social behaviors in mice. Loss of olfaction can greatly reduce social behaviors. Integrated geophysical surveys, including electromagnetic (EM-31), magnetic, dc resistivity, and ground penetrating radar (GPR) methods and soil borings were used to investigate part of a former refinery site in Carson City, Michigan, which has more than a 50-year history of hydrocarbon contamination.

Although not readily evident on the magnetic anomaly maps, the EM-31 conductivity map clearly revealed many sections of buried pipes of various lengths and orientations. Also evident on the EM maps are extensive near surface conductivity anomalies. The focus of this investigation of the Lakeside Refinery site is the inorganic geochemistry because previous investigations concerned organics and heavy metals. Because little nitrate is in native groundwater, high dissolved ammonia immediately downgradient from a petroleum body suggests the source is the petroleum and/or associated byproducts. Iron reduction is most prominent immediately upgradient from the known and measurable petroleum while manganese reduction occurs mostly downgradient. Sulfate reduction occurs mostly towards the southern portion of the light petroleum LNAPL. Magnesium titanium oxide powders were synthesized by the sol-gel method using alkoxides of magnesium and titanium with different ratios. Matastable phases of qandilite, Mg₂TiO₄, were found with Mg:Ti ratios down to 1.52:1 in lower temperature 600 °C than in the equilibrium condition which is above 1200 °C. Powder samples were examined by neutron powder diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for analysis of structure and oxidation states. Braille is the only reliable method of literacy for blind persons, because it enables them to read and write by touch¹.

This possibility has been investigated using radiocarbon dated fossil lake sediments from the Himalayan region of Northern India. The chronology was established using Radiocarbon dating of both organic and inorganic fractions using (AMS). Inorganic ages are older than organic ages. Organic ages are expected to increase stratigraphically, however several anomalous old ages are found in the younger part of the sediments. Final chronology, determined using selected sensible ages identified two periods of sedimentation. Clozapine (CLZ) is an atypical antipsychotic with negligible extrapyramidal side-effects. Unfortunately, CLZ drug discrimination (DD) research has yielded inconsistencies with CLZ's known pharmacological characteristics. Porter et al. (2000) have suggested that the standard 5.0 mg/kg CLZ training dose is too high, thus accounting for difficulty in assessing clozapine's discriminative stimulus (S^D) effects. Therefore, 16 male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained to discriminate either 1.25 (Group II) or 5.0 mg/kg (Group I) CLZ from vehicle in a two-choice DD task. Chiral dendrimers with .unique ordered structures are especially attractive for the recognition of chiral molecules based on the three point contact model. We have successfully synthesized first generation chiral dendrimers containing L- and D- tryptophan methyl ester moieties and characterized them by NMR, IR, UV-Visible, MS, and optical activity. L-tryptophan methyl ester dendrimer was converted to its acid form in order to attach it to aminopropyl silica for the HPLC separation of enantiomers. The aminopropyl silica containing 1.52mmols/g of NH₂ groups binds about 0.3mmols of dendrimer per gram and has about 0.4mmols of free NH₂ groups per gram. …

Previous studies have demonstrated that 17β-estradiol can modify apolipoprotein E (apoE) expression. I found that apoE protein varied as a function of the estrous cycle and 17β-estradiol (E2) in a region specific manner in the mouse brain. I also found that apoE concentration was lowest on estrus in the hippocampus, cingulate cortex and frontal cortex; apoE concentration was highest on estrus in the olfactory bulb and cerebellum. No changes in apoE were found in the striatum throughout the estrous cycle. Exogenous E2 significantly raised tissue levels in the olfactory bulb and cerebellum, but did not increase apoE in cortical samples …
