Analysis Of Soil Erosion Based On Soil Properties, Preetha Veeraraghavan
Analysis Of Soil Erosion Based On Soil Properties, Preetha Veeraraghavan
Masters Theses
"The objectives of this research were to identify the major soil parameter(s) that affect the erosion rate of soil and to estimate the erosion rate based on those soil parameters. Both prepared samples and natural samples were used in this research. The soil properties analyzed were the water content, unit weight, Atterberg limits, and soil cohesion. The erosion rate was determined using a rectangular flume and a linear relation between the erosion rate and shear stress was established from the flume experiment. The slope of the linear relation was a good indicator of the soil's erosion rate. The erosion rate …
Adhesion-Delamination Mechanics Of Linear And Axisymmetric Film At Film-Substrate Interface, Ming-Fung Wong
Adhesion-Delamination Mechanics Of Linear And Axisymmetric Film At Film-Substrate Interface, Ming-Fung Wong
Masters Theses
"This thesis is to characterize the thin membrane adhesion-delamination phenomena which occur in biological cells and micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) operation. The delamination of a thin film adhered to a rigid substrate is subjected to the coupling effects of tensile residual stress and interfacial adhesion energy. The adhesion-delamination mechanics is derived using the classical linear elasticity and thermodynamics energy balance. The membrane deformation is here dominated by a mixed plate-bending and membrane-stretching, while the concomitant stress is neglected. An 1-dimensional model is first investigated where a pre-stressed rectangular film clamped at both ends delaminates from a rigid punch of the same …

Synthesis, Characterization And Application Of Pd-Pt Bimetallic Nanoparticles And Carbon Nanotubes Supported Nanocomposites, Guoqiang Ren
Masters Theses
"A study on the synthesis of Pd-Pt alloy nanoparticles and composition evolution of the alloys was reported. The synthesis followed a hot organometallic route, with Pd and Pt acetylacetonate as the metal precursors and trioctylphosphine as the solvent. The size of the Pd-Pt nanoparticles narrowed down with time and reached a final size of 3.5 nm in about 10 min. The alloy compositions evolved with time and reached the preset Pd to Pt ratio of precursors in 120 min. An atomic exchange process between the Pt-TOP complex and the Pd atoms at the nanoparticle surface was proposed to elucidate this …

Dynamic Modeling And Simulations Of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells For Grid-Tied Applications, Nagasmitha Akkinapragada
Dynamic Modeling And Simulations Of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells For Grid-Tied Applications, Nagasmitha Akkinapragada
Masters Theses
"As energy consumption rises, one must find suitable alternative means of generation to supplement conventional existing generation facilities. In this regard, distributed generation (DG) will continue to play a critical role in the energy supply-demand realm. The common technologies available as DG are micro-turbines, solar photovoltaic systems, fuel cells stack and wind energy systems. In this thesis, a dynamic model of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is presented. Fuel cells operate at low voltages and hence need to be boosted and inverted in order to be connected to the utility grid. The interconnection of the SOFC with a DC-DC converter …
Vapor Phase Uptake Of Volatile Organic Contaminants By Hybrid Poplar Trees, Sally Rebecca Breite
Vapor Phase Uptake Of Volatile Organic Contaminants By Hybrid Poplar Trees, Sally Rebecca Breite
Masters Theses
"Phytoremediation, the use of plants to immobilize, degrade or remove contaminants from the environment, shows great promise as a remediation technique for many contaminated sites. Phytovolatilization in particular is of great interest for sites contaminated with chlorinated solvents and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs), many of which are recalcitrant to biodegradation. Hybrid poplar trees have been shown to uptake, translocate and volatilize numerous aqueous-phase VOCs, however vapor phase uptake of such compounds has only recently been observed and for only one contaminant, tetrachloroethylene (PCE). One semi-volatile and five volatile compounds were dosed to poplar trees in aqueous and vapor phase …

Screening New Cytokinesis Genes And Investigation Of Regulation Of Hof1 In Cytokinesis, Jung Eun Park
Masters Theses
"In 1996, a complete sequence of the budding yeast genome was completed and numerous studies begun to discover the function of genes. A primary concern of this study was to identify genes that may function in cytokinesis. Seven candidate genes were chosen, which were previously shown to localize to the bud neck, the site of cytokinesis, or interact with a protein that is involved in cytokinesis. Six of those uncharacterized genes, YHR149C, YLR187W, YOL070C, YMR124W, YPL158C, and YOR304C-A, were identified by data generated by GFP tagging of the yeast proteome. Data from a large-scale two-hybrid screen was used to identify …

A Quantitative Study Of Gene Identification Techniques Based On Evolutionary Rationales, Cyriac Kandoth
A Quantitative Study Of Gene Identification Techniques Based On Evolutionary Rationales, Cyriac Kandoth
Masters Theses
"Current gene identification (GI) techniques typically rely on matching biological or chemical properties of specific genes, specific species, specific ecotypes, etc...In this thesis, a new automated GI technique is proposed, and compared against another computer-based technique proposed earlier. Both methods utilize EST data available from NCBI databases to discover previously unknown genes. The newly proposed method identifies one gene family at a time and is based on a distinctive negative selection pattern (NSP) of differences, which is seen between the coding regions of gene family members. The other technique, called ESTminer, attempts genome-wide gene family identification for any organism, by …

Microfluidic Biosensors For Intelligent Metabolite Monitoring, Nitin Radhakrishnan
Masters Theses
"Baseline (zero-value) drift and sensitivity degradation are two common problems related with biosensors. In order to overcome these problems, there is a great need for integrating an on-demand, in situ self-diagnosis and self-calibration unit along with the sensor. Utilizing the microfluidic technology, it is possible to explore the feasibility of implementing this function without any externally coupled bulky apparatus. A microsystem including a microfluidic channel and calibration electrodes are prepared by microfabrication techniques"--Abstract, page iv.

Faith, Hope, And Love Through Doubt In Tennyson's In Memoriam, David Settle
Faith, Hope, And Love Through Doubt In Tennyson's In Memoriam, David Settle
Masters Theses
In Memoriam is a poem expressing the journey of Christian faith Alfred Tennyson experiences after the death of his friend, Arthur Hallam. Although Tennyson is submerged in deep sorrow and confronted with questions and challenges to his spiritual beliefs, he becomes a stronger Christian who is filled with faith in a God of love who will reunite him with his departed friend. A careful reading of the poem in comparison with Biblical texts reveals that Tennyson underwent a spiritual transformation that deepened his belief in Christ and the hope of a life after death where he will enjoy the companionship …
Rocking The Kenyan Cradle: Colonial Conditioning In Ngugi Wa Thiongo's Njamba Nene Stories, Jonathan Moore
Rocking The Kenyan Cradle: Colonial Conditioning In Ngugi Wa Thiongo's Njamba Nene Stories, Jonathan Moore
Masters Theses
This thesis analyzes Ngugi wa Thiongo's critique of the colonial influences on the Church, the British educational system and the Kenyan middle class in and around the time of Kenya's State of Emergency of the 1950s. Specifically, I examine these colonial legacies through his two children's books Njamba Nene and the Flying Bus and Njamba Nene's Pistol. More than simply exploit the poor, all three condition the people into a state of submissive acceptance of British superiority. The middle class, a self-replicating product of the first two, is of particular concern to Ngugi because, in this case, Kenyans exploit Kenyans …

Cell Signaling Pathways In Lps-Mediated Apoptosis Of Dedifferentiated Hepatoma Cells, Michael Ryan Reidy
Cell Signaling Pathways In Lps-Mediated Apoptosis Of Dedifferentiated Hepatoma Cells, Michael Ryan Reidy
Masters Theses
Using liver tumor cells and their dedifferentiated cell lines, mechanisms underlying tissue specific gene expression can be studied. We have derived cell lines, from liver tumor cells, which fail to express liver genes. These cells are termed "dedifferentiated cells". One significant observation made was that cells which fail to express liver genes also rapidly undergo programmed cell death (known as apoptosis) under the influence of the bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Understanding the mechanism of how liver function relates to cell apoptosis is the goal of this study.
Apoptosis is known to play a critical role in development and homeostasis, yet …
Comparison Of Avian Nest Success Among Linear Wooded Habitats In An Agricultural Landscape, Terri J.E. Thompson
Comparison Of Avian Nest Success Among Linear Wooded Habitats In An Agricultural Landscape, Terri J.E. Thompson
Masters Theses
In the Midwest, urban expansion and more intensive agricultural practices have reduced habitat available to most species of breeding birds. Linear wooded habitats including fencerows and riparian strips are a common habitat feature in many agricultural landscapes. Changes in agricultural practices and the subsequent reduction in grasslands and fencerows have lead to greater breeding densities in species that use the remaining fencerows as nest sites. This may lead to a lower nesting success due to factors such as higher predation risk. Specifically, it is not known how such linear habitats currently contribute to avian populations in central Illinois.
We monitored …
Effects Of Food Deprivation, Body Size, And Egg Load On The Mating Behavior Of Female Japanese Beetles, Popillia Japonica Newman (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), Natasha Tigreros
Effects Of Food Deprivation, Body Size, And Egg Load On The Mating Behavior Of Female Japanese Beetles, Popillia Japonica Newman (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), Natasha Tigreros
Masters Theses
Female condition may play an important role in the mating frequency of species that mate at foraging areas. For example, in species where feeding females are more easily encountered or less resistant to mating than females that are performing other activities, low energy levels could increase mating activity. We studied the relationship between female condition and mating activity in the Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) in a laboratory study. We altered condition by depriving some females of food for one day and comparing their mating behavior to well-fed females. Our results showed that the effect of condition on mating …
Red Squirrel Distribution And Habitat Use In Illinois, Corinna Hanson
Red Squirrel Distribution And Habitat Use In Illinois, Corinna Hanson
Masters Theses
The North American red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) is a species of special concern in Illinois due to its restricted geographic range and low numbers. This species occupies a broad geographic range in North America and is usually associated with the boreal forests of Canada and coniferous forests in the Rocky Mountain range. The squirrels also occupy deciduous and mixed deciduous-coniferous forests in the eastern U.S. In Illinois, available habitat is suboptimal, and limited to pine plantations and small tracts of deciduous forest embedded in an agricultural matrix landscapе. Information on the spatial distribution of red squirrels in northeastern Illinois was …
Mating, Kinship, And Population Structure In Illinois Beaver Populations, Joanne C. Crawford
Mating, Kinship, And Population Structure In Illinois Beaver Populations, Joanne C. Crawford
Masters Theses
The North American beaver, Castor canadensis, is an important wildlife species for a variety of reasons. As a furbearer, it provides income and recreation to trappers throughout the state. As a wetland engineer, it helps maintain functioning ecosystems (Naiman et al. 1986, McKinstry and Anderson 2002). Finally, the beaver serves as a model organism for studies of mating and kinship, as it has beed reported to be almost exclusively monogamous (Sun 2003).
Monogamy in mammals is generally restricted to the primates, canids, and rodents, and is defined as a mating system in which a pair remains together for at least …

Supramolecular Usefulness Of Hexamethylenetetramine, Philias Daka
Supramolecular Usefulness Of Hexamethylenetetramine, Philias Daka
Masters Theses
Because non-covalent contacts are important to the design and construction of materials with functional applications, efforts that seek to uncover chemical features responsible for the assembly of multimolecular arrays hold current interest. The building-block approach is one strategy that has been successfully employed for the construction of molecular assemblies. By designing molecular components with complementary functional groups, the construction of predictable supramolecular motifs is possible. Although various modes of molecular alignment have been generated using this strategy, the extension of low dimensional motifs (discrete and 1-D patterns) to 2- and 3-D patterns remain a current challenge.
The Relationship Between Parental Divorce And First-Year College Student Adjustment, Jennifer A. Copes
The Relationship Between Parental Divorce And First-Year College Student Adjustment, Jennifer A. Copes
Masters Theses
This study was conducted to investigate the potential relationship between incoming freshmen parental marital status and students' first-year adjustment to college. The PI saw a need for this study because of the lack of previous research directly connecting the two above variables. Numerous researchers have investigated the negative effects of parental divorce; the importance of one's parents during the transition to college has also been well documented. For the purpose of this study, the PI sought to examine a potential link between the two, assuming children of divorce would experience more difficulties adjusting to college life than children from intact …
Investigating Biodiversity: An Economic Analysis Of Global Endangered Species Loss, Kyle Baumgartner
Investigating Biodiversity: An Economic Analysis Of Global Endangered Species Loss, Kyle Baumgartner
Masters Theses
There has been a rapid increase in interest among economists to examine the economic causes of biodiversity loss. The goal of this thesis is to investigate biodiversity loss using percentage of endangered species across countries for a three year period of time. This is accomplished by developing a series of models to examine the impact of various economic factors on biodiversity loss, in this case using percentage of threatened species as a proxy.
The results indicate that the development of economic growth can impact endangered species loss. The results also demonstrate that there is a relationship between percentage of endangered …

Habitat Use And Overwintering Ecology Of The Northern Watersnake (Nerodia Sipedon) On An Artificial Levee In Central Illinois, Melanie J. Olds
Masters Theses
Several reptile species have populations that are in decline, and anthropogenic habitat loss and alteration are arguably the factors having the greatest impact on these species. More attention has been paid to understanding the activity season habitat needs in snakes than on the habitat requirements for overwintering. I examined the patterns of both activity season and overwintering habitat use by a population of northern watersnakes (Nerodia sipedon) that inhabit an artificial levee in central Illinois. My research objectives were to determine how a population of northern watersnakes uses an artificial levee during the activity season and to determine what type …
Influence Of Fish Presence And Removal On Woodland Pond Breeding Amphibians, J. Brian Towey
Influence Of Fish Presence And Removal On Woodland Pond Breeding Amphibians, J. Brian Towey
Masters Theses
Predatory fish can have devastating effects on populations of amphibians, many of which are already declining around the world. Land managers seeking to restore disturbed woodland ponds to more historically-accurate conditions may consider removing fish, a potentially difficult or costly process. I report on the effects of introduced sunfish (Lepomis spp.) and black bullhead catfish (Ameiurus melas), and their removal, on the reproductive efforts of three species of amphibians: smallmouth salamanders (Ambystoma texanum), American toads (Bufo americanus) and wood frogs (Rana sylvatica). Using drift fences and pitfall traps around four woodland ponds, amphibians were monitored for one year prior to …
