Heavy Metal Concentrations In The Waters Of The Springfield Area, Missouri, Anita Louise Williams
Heavy Metal Concentrations In The Waters Of The Springfield Area, Missouri, Anita Louise Williams
Masters Theses
"Water samples consisting of streams, springs, lakes, deep wells, and shallow wells were collected from various locations around the Springfield area. These were analysed for concentrations of the heavy metals of lead, copper, cadmium, zinc, mercury, and iron. Heavy metal contents in the waters occasionally show local concentrations. The zinc content can be related to known minor mineralized areas around Springfield. Some iron content in the surface waters and shallow aquifers is contributed by the iron-bearing clays and pyrites in the shallow formations.
The ranges of heavy metal values in the Springfield area are in ppb: lead, 1 to 70; …
An Investigation Into The Degree Of Correlation Between Air Flow Rates, Bacteria In The Air And Post-Operative Infections In Hospitals, Carl Eugene Intag
An Investigation Into The Degree Of Correlation Between Air Flow Rates, Bacteria In The Air And Post-Operative Infections In Hospitals, Carl Eugene Intag
Masters Theses
"Post-operative infections are a recognized problem in the medical and hospital professions. Annual costs and deaths due to infections in the U.S.A. have been estimated at $8-$9 billion and 10,000 lives respectively. The air lS one potential path in transporting contaminants that may cause an infection. Yet, the degree of influence airborne contaminants have in causing infections is a topic of much debate. As a result of the need for more information in this area, this investigation was undertaken to determine the degree of correlation between post-operative infection rates, bacteria in the air, and air flow rates.
Data for the …
Investigation Of An Energy Absorbing Device For Passenger Safety, Prakash Krishnaswamy
Investigation Of An Energy Absorbing Device For Passenger Safety, Prakash Krishnaswamy
Masters Theses
"Energy absorption by driving an oversized plunger through a longitudinally slit shell has been studied. The characteristics obtained by conducting several runs indicate that such a system could be used for energy absorption and for limiting the force required to drive the plunger through the shell. The characteristics can be readily altered by changing the dimensions of the tube. Details of the experimental set-up have been given.
Such an absorber has been adapted for mitigating injury sustained by the occupants in the interior of a colliding vehicle. Full advantage has been taken of the "Ride down" potential available to the …
Release Of Pollutants From Aquatic Sediments, Lloyd Aldon Hinkle Jr.
Release Of Pollutants From Aquatic Sediments, Lloyd Aldon Hinkle Jr.
Masters Theses
"This study was undertaken to investigate factors governing the release of pollutants from sediments and subsequent effects on water quality. Studies were carried out to: 1) determine the characteristics of selected sediments; 2) determine the level of release of pollutants under batch and fill and draw conditions; 3) determine the effect of temperature and pH on release mechanisms; 4) determine the importance of microbial (uninhibited) release and physio-chemical (inhibited) release processes.
The sediment utilized was from the Missouri River at Jefferson City, Missouri, and the Burgher Branch near Rolla, Missouri. Five environmental conditions to evaluate the effects of pH and …
Attitude Scaling As A Public Involvement Tool In The Lower Mississippi River Region Comprehensive Study, William A. Lee
Attitude Scaling As A Public Involvement Tool In The Lower Mississippi River Region Comprehensive Study, William A. Lee
Masters Theses
"The planner is under considerable pressure to involve the public in water resource planning. The public, however, often lacks sufficient knowledge to offer useful comments or suggestions. The use of a Likert Type Attitude Scale in the public involvement effort of the Lower Mississippi Region Comprehensive Study demonstrates the usefulness of attitude scaling techniques in obtaining public input to the planning process. The measurement of an individual's attitude, or his thoughts, feelings and disposition to act toward some aspect of his environment with some degree of consistency, gives an indication of the goals and objectives toward which a plan acceptable …
Liquid-Liquid Extraction With First Order Reaction : A Mathematical Simulation, Alan Wayne Smith
Liquid-Liquid Extraction With First Order Reaction : A Mathematical Simulation, Alan Wayne Smith
Masters Theses
"Models for mass transfer to droplets based on film theory with first order chemical reaction are proposed and compared with experimental data. The experimental extraction data is available from the work by Andoe (1968). The physical system used was benzene as a continuous phase and water as a dispersed phase with 2-chloro-2- methyl propane the solute diffusing into and reacting in the droplet. This system had a high interfacial tension (31.0 dynes/cm) and droplet Reynolds numbers ranging from 600 to 1345.
The predicted results of this work are in the form of the dimensionless total mass transferred to the droplet …
Digital Fault Calculations Of Large Systems Using Matrix Language And Generalized Equations, Saeed Abdel-Halim Khalifa
Digital Fault Calculations Of Large Systems Using Matrix Language And Generalized Equations, Saeed Abdel-Halim Khalifa
Masters Theses
"A new short circuit program has been developed for a large system. Several features have been provided to simplify handling of the system data. Various study cases are performed, efficiently, within the available computer memory. A master data bank is established from bus, feeder and transformer data. They can be modified internally to simulate various system configurations. Matrix formation is accomplished using a new sorting method and the IBM/360 Matrix Language MATLAN. A generalized set of ii ·equations have been developed and applied to calculate four types of faults.
The program consists of two phases of operations. In phase-1, input …

Community College Counseling Emphasizing Student Personnel Services And Placement, Ronald R. Crandell
Community College Counseling Emphasizing Student Personnel Services And Placement, Ronald R. Crandell
Masters Theses
The internship experience at Jackson Community College enabled the investigator to experience the actual functions of a community college counselor. It provided an opportunity to interact with staff members, interview different employers, and present placement information for students and faculty. Many times during the internship there were opportunities to plan specific objectives and implement them. Completing the actual objectives and responsibilities of a counselor in a community college setting has been extremely valuable. A traditional college class could not have duplicated these types of experiences.

Healy-Murphy Learning Center: An Experiment In Educating The Dropout, Esther Vexler
Masters Theses
This study deals with a growing educational problem, that of educating the high school dropout. It does not attempt to treat the subject from the point of view of a professional educator or even as a student of the literature on the subject. It attempts, instead, to describe and review the writer's own impressions during a two-year relationship with a school for dropouts, the Healy-Murphy Learning Center. The writer relates those impressions to current thoughts and trends in attacking this problem of urban society. In reviewing this experience, considerable effort has been devoted to some research into the general background …

Masters Theses
I. Introduction
It is well known that the hydrogen atoms of a methyl group directly attached to an aromatic system are sufficiently acidic to be abstracted by suitable bases to generate the corresponding α-anion.1,2 These monoanions have frequently served as suitable intermediates for the formation of a large variety of a-condensation products in good to excellent yields2 On the other hand, attempts to obtain α,α-dianions from various dimethylaromatic systems have met with limited success.2 Due to the lack of sufficiently strong bases, dimetalation products were obtained only in poor yields even at high temperatures and prolonged reaction …
