A Better City For Her: Design Safer Public Spaces For Women In The United States And China, Geruihan Xu Jun 2021

A Better City For Her: Design Safer Public Spaces For Women In The United States And China, Geruihan Xu

Masters Theses

Gender dynamics in public spaces are important issues to study. Here, I challenge the patriarchy in the built environment because it intensifies the oppressed status of women in modern cities. Listening to women’s concerns is the first step of doing so. Meanwhile, I am aware that different socio-cultural backgrounds would affect women’s attitudes, preferences, and other aspects of public spaces. Thus, the thesis will be discussed in the contexts of mainland China and the United States due to the limitation of my experience.

In this thesis, I want to find out what are the needs of women in public spaces …

“Venerated For Their Bloody Deeds” English Medievalism In Literature, World War I Aviation, And Memorials, Levy Walton Pait Jun 2021

“Venerated For Their Bloody Deeds” English Medievalism In Literature, World War I Aviation, And Memorials, Levy Walton Pait

Masters Theses

Aviators of World War I were trailblazers of the sky. That much is certain. However, there has been a historical debate about their reputation as “knights of the air.” During the war and for many years afterward, World War I aviators were compared to medieval knights battling in honorable duels amongst the clouds. This was an idea popularized by the pilots themselves. David Lloyd George, British Prime Minister during World War I, described pilots, “‘They are the knighthood of this war… they recall the legendary days of chivalry not merely by the daring of their exploits but by the nobility …

Loyalist Preachers During The American Revolution (1765-1783), Christena Renea Leaverton Jun 2021

Loyalist Preachers During The American Revolution (1765-1783), Christena Renea Leaverton

Masters Theses

“Loyalists were those who remained loyal to the British Crown and did not support America’s fight for independence leading up to, and during, the American Revolution. Being loyal to the crown was the normal practice for all Americans prior to the increasing call for independence.” In the time leading up to and during the American Revolution (1765-1783), Loyalist preachers defended their stance on remaining loyal to Great Britain utilizing Bible themes and specific verses. Oftentimes, as with the Patriots, these Loyalist preachers took these themes and verses out of context or misquoted them. They also used Bible themes and verses …

The Art Of Microbe Maintenance: Value And Applications In Design, Yujin Hwang Jun 2021

The Art Of Microbe Maintenance: Value And Applications In Design, Yujin Hwang

Masters Theses

My thesis centers around designing microbial systems and objects for a sustainable future. I propose ideas to bring microbes into the home in order to make people understand them as a part of the environment. Through deep consideration of how my microbe based material could change across national and social contexts, I create accessible, attractive and friendly-looking design objects with microbes that address people’s fear of microbial life. I strive to facilitate the intersection and interaction between people and technologies in ways that are ultimately harmonious for the well being of both.

My ultimate goal for my thesis is not …

Cultural Acupuncture: Decentralization And Deocratization In Chinese Exhibition Design, Ruohan Duan Jun 2021

Cultural Acupuncture: Decentralization And Deocratization In Chinese Exhibition Design, Ruohan Duan

Masters Theses

There is an imbalance between the opportunities for aesthetic education in big cities and underdeveloped areas in China. Taking Shanghai and Beijing as examples, museums in big cities consume most art educational resources. People who live in rural or small towns hardly have access to the arts, making the aesthetic gap larger between cultural centers and cultural deserts.

This thesis proposes a new exhibition system that could send a series of accessible and sustainable exhibition structures around China to narrow the educational resources gap and synchronize cultural curriculum between different places. Decentralizing and democratizing the cultural center and bringing the …

Mutable Landscapes: Diversity Through The Lens Of The Earth's Biomass, Ilya Iskhakov Jun 2021

Mutable Landscapes: Diversity Through The Lens Of The Earth's Biomass, Ilya Iskhakov

Masters Theses

This thesis explores conditions of mutability in the landscape through the lens of the Earth’s biomass, particularly the living beings whose systemic, functional and aesthetic values are misrepresented or undervalued. Relegated to the abandoned, derelict and forgotten landscapes, the presence of these living things has often come to represent decay, blight, lack of resources, and care. However, in the light of the global environmental crisis and in search of viable solutions to clean up the environment and curb greenhouse gas emissions, it has become apparent that the spontaneous, opportunistic qualities of these living beings can provide unparalleled opportunities to do …

Nossa Quadra, Nossa Historia: The Power Of Collaborative And Communal Outdoor Spaces As A Tool For Belonging & Agency, Rebecca Maria Pepl Jun 2021

Nossa Quadra, Nossa Historia: The Power Of Collaborative And Communal Outdoor Spaces As A Tool For Belonging & Agency, Rebecca Maria Pepl

Masters Theses

Brazil - a country with a history of colonization, slavery, precipitated industrialization, rapid urbanization, superimposed european modernism (architectural and ideological), unstable politics, growing inequity, socio-economic stratification and overpopulation combined with a lack of adequate housing for the wider population. The government has been trying to solve these issues with standardized, unsuccessful social housing projects along the periphery of the city, disregarding the population’s lifestyle and neglecting their visions. This perpetuates existing discriminatory divides, enforced through architecture and infrastructure.

This thesis attempts to improve the quality of life of the residents in the Cohab Neighborhood in Recife, which is one of …

Dive, Aparna Sarkar Jun 2021

Dive, Aparna Sarkar

Masters Theses

In my thesis paintings, abstracted bodies collide with sticky shapes and residues in otherworldly spaces to form a queer, diasporic mythology. Bodies are slick, crusty, diaphanous, partial, chunky, other—they vary in legibility, suspended in emergence and expulsion from the environment. Multiple selves make these works. One asks sensorial questions of painting: what feelings, memories, and experiences can I transmit through color and material? I embed the smell of marigolds, the swi!t temperature change of the California desert, or the thick haze of a three a.m. dance floor make-out. My trusting self follows visions of color and shape, believing that they …

A House On A Street: A Proposal For The Multi-Generational House In America, Ian Johnson Kienbaum Jun 2021

A House On A Street: A Proposal For The Multi-Generational House In America, Ian Johnson Kienbaum

Masters Theses

The American Dream of the past would have a “bread-winner,” no need for affordable child care, and guaranteed retirement. While those concepts are still prevalent in some capacities, the rise of dual-income families, lack of child care, and delayed or foregone retirement creates an opportunity for the multigenerational home to reemerge as a critical housing typology in America.

To set the stage for this investigation, the house's life cycle is broken into five acts. Each act plays out a different configuration of space to the changing lifestyle of a family of six. The characters are two grandparents, two parents, and …

Play & Protest, James Kloote Jun 2021

Play & Protest, James Kloote

Masters Theses

Play and Protest is first and foremost, a celebration of the agency achieved by bodies with a shared cause. A parade of actants working to soften the harsh lines imposed by oppressive design strategies. A statement created in the void and for the void, along a path which seeks to use spatial tools to define the possibilities of a new urbanism, one of malleability and equity.

Community Healthcare Clinic - Adaptation System To The Pandemic And Post Pandemic Periods, Nhu Le Jun 2021

Community Healthcare Clinic - Adaptation System To The Pandemic And Post Pandemic Periods, Nhu Le

Masters Theses

Due to COVID-19, uncertainties and significant changes have been occurring around the world, especially in the U.S. The future is always ambiguous but it will lead to breakthroughs. Emerging issues are the vulnerability of previous conventional design solutions, especially of the healthcare-related architecture and urban planning.

This thesis focuses on helping construct a new healthcare system, which could be used during either a pandemic or post-pandemic era, by designing a local community clinic. In fact, public health clinics are always needed and expected to be more flexibly adjustable and up-gradable. Those new clinics play a very important role since the …

Manahatta, Nicholas Hinckfuss Jun 2021

Manahatta, Nicholas Hinckfuss

Masters Theses

The explosive population growth of overly indulgent urban societies, in conjunction with the absence of systematic structures that alleviate human environmental impacts, contribute to unfavorable socio-economic consequences which actively interfere with the long-term prospect of human development. One of the hidden costs of the urban population boom is the alarming trend of infectious disease outbreaks. To meet the demands of an ever growing population, essential urban conditions such as green spaces, eco-infrastructure, and amiable living conditions are lacking from modern urban contexts. New York City, is the perfect example of a hyperly urban community that lacks an overall organizational strategy …

996 & Anti-996, Jinmi Liu Jun 2021

996 & Anti-996, Jinmi Liu

Masters Theses

I constantly hear my friends complain about work. They say that the workload has become heavier than before. They say that people are working longer yet earning less. They say that their life is out of their control and their dreams had died. I feel pathetic when I hear these comments. Will I have to become one of those busy bees after graduation? Living a life that centered around compromising work and gradually losing the way?

"996" is a common work schedule now in China under which the employees work from 9 am to 9 pm, 6 days a week. …

City Of Archive: Visualize And Spatialize Archive, Zaiheng Liang Jun 2021

City Of Archive: Visualize And Spatialize Archive, Zaiheng Liang

Masters Theses

The idea of archive art continues to be an undeniable force and organizing structure in exhibitions today. The flexibility of archive art privileges it to be materialized in multiple disciplines like Photography, Painting, Sculpture. To employ different methodologies and media: collage, book, installation, and exhibition. In the process of making and representing archive art, architecture has never been the protagonist but acts as the “White Cube” that only provides the place in a very superficial nature of this discipline.

While the interrelationship of archive art is trying to build up the context within the artwork, this process loses the opportunity …

Sensory Bridge, Ouqiao Sun Jun 2021

Sensory Bridge, Ouqiao Sun

Masters Theses

Xiezuo Hutong is one of the most typical local residential areas in Beijing's old town. The Chinese wood-based “siheyuan” architecture is originated here. With the development of the economy, many modern activity spaces gradually emerged in this old residential area-There is a shopping center, a youth club, an art college, and a kindergarten around the Xiezuo Hutong. However, these spaces with different functions are randomly distributed and most of them don’t give too much consideration to the local elder residents, which leads to environmental incoherence and generation disconnections. In addition, some of Beijing’s typical urban issues - population density, noise, …

Design For The Past, Zexi Wang Jun 2021

Design For The Past, Zexi Wang

Masters Theses

The thesis project started off with an investigation of the Coal Gas Factory in Datong City, and an interview of a former factory employee. All relevent information is covered in the Report.

This thesis project proposes for an alternative factory design solution for the past (1980s), acknowledging its inevitable failure in its future (2000s).

The design acknowledges architecture’s nature of temporality, and is focused on making architecture transformative--creating space and environment for architecture to be transformed in order to accommodate updated programs and activities when its no longer able to serve its original purpose.

Vernacular Future Architecture, Yang Zhao Jun 2021

Vernacular Future Architecture, Yang Zhao

Masters Theses

The lifestyle of citizens in Xiamen changes with the occurrence of urbanization and verticalization. The spatial organization within tower-like residential buildings is generally focused on individuals or small families. However, people generally had more public space which could be used for their shared interests in the vernacular housing in which they used to live. My research discovered advantages and disadvantages for both vernacular and modern housing, and proposed a new distributed public resources architectural model in an urban context to help reclaim public space while retaining the possibility of city growth. This project aims to create a more complex ecology …

Paperwork, Romik Bose Mitra Jun 2021

Paperwork, Romik Bose Mitra

Masters Theses

This thesis is about the politics of identity and belonging. It is about the impact that practices of identification, government surveillance, and global systems of citizenship and nationality have on the people that live by them. Inspired by the various borders (both real and imagined) that I maneuvered around to get to Rhode Island, and enriched with perspectives gathered in conversation with theoreticians in the field, Paperwork is a set of documents and debriefs that details the work that I made in response to a migratory and investigatory journey. Through this thesis, I attempt to better understand various bureaucratic practices …

Balance The Conversations, Karen Kuo Jun 2021

Balance The Conversations, Karen Kuo

Masters Theses

This thesis aims to examine the role environmental factors play in people’s experience of the built environment, with a focus on the ongoing debate between individual freedom and collective responsibility of masks in the COVID-19 era. This thesis will argue that a middle ground that balances the relationship between individual and collective pursuits is necessary and can potentially be enabled through design. The project will articulate these ideas by using the debate around mask-wearing as a starting point to develop a broader manifesto forshaping the built environment.

During this ongoing global pandemic, we can’t deny that human behavior has been …

Fossil Morphology, Leah Zhang Jun 2021

Fossil Morphology, Leah Zhang

Masters Theses

Fossil Morphology is a multi-media art project based on my research on the coal mining area in East Pennsylvania. It consists of a film, a series of photographs, and a sound installation. Together, the three works form a dialog among each other about the ecology and aesthetics of the region’s coal mining landscape and its underground.

For a long time, coal, as an raw material for mass production, has been understood and examined from its economic values and social meanings. The gradual abandoning of this material by our industry therefore leads to the seemingly inevitable decline of the coal mining …

Insecurities: Tracing Displacement And Migration, Hammad Abid Jun 2021

Insecurities: Tracing Displacement And Migration, Hammad Abid

Masters Theses

“Insecurities: Tracing Displacement and Migration,” the title of both my thesis work and thesis book, calls attention to displacement and forced migration as a disruption in the continuity of place, relationships, identity, memory, and time. Through a collection of textiles, I try to capture the psychological, social, and physical effects of forced migration and communicate the impact of political violence on identity and coexistence.

In this book, I position myself within the context of how the current Indian government is attempting to rewrite the nation’s history and distort India’s pluralistic story. I tell a personal narrative of displacement in harrowing …

The journey to designing shoes that use irony and mischief of everyday life in Bangkok to criticize the social-political climate and challenge the norm. In the act of desacralization while trying not to get arrested with the problematic criminal code article 112, the Lèse-majesté law of Thailand.

The design is based on the designer's life growing up in Bangkok. The tax use priority in Thailand doesn’t reflect the life of its people. One of the most prominent features of Bangkok is its abandoned sidewalks. The abandonment of infrastructure is part of our lives as well as the feeling that we …

Plastic is the cheapest and most versatile material invented by humans. But with it comes endless pollution. In the face of plastic waste, I need to establish a direct and effective plastic reuse method.

In order to limit plastic waste to a controllable range, I try to reduce the cost of recycled plastics and increase the value of recycled plastics. After research and experimentation, I created a method of turning plastic bottles into plastic cloth through cutting and knitting. This method and material provide a new direction for the reuse of plastics. For the creation of new reuse methods, it …

Rebuilt The Fading Vicinity, Yifan Du Jun 2021

Rebuilt The Fading Vicinity, Yifan Du

Masters Theses

Something is missing on the scale between me and the whole world. That’s also the dilemma of the Millennials. The giant gap between the ego and the world builds an invisible wall. This invisible barrier makes us nonchalant toward the trivial things happening just right in front of us. Ironically, the nonchalance makes our society more emotional and drastic. We get outraged more easily compare to the past.

How should I invite people to appreciate and care more about our surroundings? How do I rebuild the fading vicinity? Those questions are the starting point of my thesis journey.

The Sixth Migration - Rural/Urban "Heterotopia", Pan Chen

Masters Theses

Written during the pandemic of 2020/2021 ,as people moved out of cities with new options to work remotely, we have witnessed a new trend of urban-rural migration. This study looks in detail at rural /suburban communities in southern New Jersey and asks how a planning framework and community engagement strategy can come together to coordinate urban-rural development at different scales. This thesis project applies two types of design strategies - “top down” as planning guidelines communication and “bottom up” as community-oriented design to bring residents in the conversation of town development, and in the long term stimulate regional development to …
