Strain Differences In Alcohol Preference On Guinea Pigs And Experimental Manipulation Of Preference By Forced Alcohol Consumption, Gerald L. Appelman Dec 1966

Strain Differences In Alcohol Preference On Guinea Pigs And Experimental Manipulation Of Preference By Forced Alcohol Consumption, Gerald L. Appelman

Masters Theses

Introduction

The study of the determinants of alcoholism, one of the most perplexing diseases of mankind, entered its most fruitful era of discovery in the laboratory of the animal researcher. A pioneering study of the determinants of alcohol consumption by Richter (1940) indicated that laboratory rats show a preference for alcohol over water beginning at 1.8 per cent ethanol (v/v) solution, and continue to prefer alcohol over water up to a 6 per cent ethanol (v/v) solution. Richter made two important contributions to alcohol research which had broader implications than the presentation of an index of alcohol consumption in rats. …

An Examination Of The Attitudes Of Students In Clinical Training Toward Concepts Judged Important To The Therapeutic Process, David B. Ingram Aug 1966

An Examination Of The Attitudes Of Students In Clinical Training Toward Concepts Judged Important To The Therapeutic Process, David B. Ingram

Masters Theses

The Background and Purpose of the Study

Introduction

This study is generally concerned with an evaluation of the proficiencies of speech therapists in training. The importance of this area, while obvious, has received little formal recognition in the field of speech pathology. That this topic has not been the concern of more research may be understood when we consider a contemporary and authoritative definition of the word 'therapy'. Colby (5, p. 95) states that therapy is: "...a practical art, a craft like agriculture, or medicine or wine making in which an artisan relies on an incomplete, fragmentary of knowledge and …

An Investigation Of The Use Of The Semantic Differential For Assessing Reactions To Stuttering Behavior, Douglas J. Spurlock Aug 1966

An Investigation Of The Use Of The Semantic Differential For Assessing Reactions To Stuttering Behavior, Douglas J. Spurlock

Masters Theses

Introduction

The professional literature in the field of speech pathology contains a great many references to stuttering. A large part of this literature on stuttering has dealt with the problem of severity. The importance of the concept severity of stuttering can be viewed in its relation to the broad theoretical constructs in the field of stuttering. Severity is a way of quantifying the extent of abnormality or degree of interference with the normal speech process. To say that one stutter is more severe than another is to say that he appears to be more abnormal than the other. Severity of …

Identification Of Long-Tenure Hourly Factory Workers Using A Weighted Application Blank, Joffrey Michael Dornon Aug 1966

Identification Of Long-Tenure Hourly Factory Workers Using A Weighted Application Blank, Joffrey Michael Dornon

Masters Theses

A cursory examination of employment application blanks, so commonly used in modern business, reveals that two kinds of data are normally requested of a job applicant. The first kind of data are items necessary for the identification of the prospective employee: name, age, sex, address, and so on to the extent permissible and required by existing law and customary personnel administration procedures.

The use of the second kind of data contained in application blanks is seldom explicitly stated but is assumed to be of greater importance for personnel selection decisions. Information regarding previous job history, hobbies, and related activities and …

Order And Organization As Problems Of Developing Political Systems: Ghana And Nigeria, Hugh Michael Stevenson

Masters Theses

Introduction

The study of political development has come to dominate that branch of the discipline of political science concerned with comparative politics. There is, however, a terminological and methodological confusion in the literature that is in need of clarification.

A Study Of Child Rearing Attitudes Among Negro Mothers Residing In A Low Status Neighborhood, Curtis J. Jones Jun 1966

A Study Of Child Rearing Attitudes Among Negro Mothers Residing In A Low Status Neighborhood, Curtis J. Jones

Masters Theses

Introduction

The Problem

The problem in this investigation is to determine the characteristics of lower status Negro mothers and their families and to determine whether specific characteristics are associated with the utilization or acceptance of traditional or developmental child rearing attitudes. More specifically, this investigation will attempt to determine what cognate relationships prevail in the various segments of lower status Negro mothers with respect to their exhibiting traditional or developmental child rearing attitudes and their relative social status position, family composition, and mother's social contact frequency.

It appears that in order to make more reliable generalizations about the Negro families …

Perception And The Administrator An Investigation Into The Perceptual Areas Of Difference Between The Various Levels Of An Organization, W. W. Mcintire Apr 1966

Perception And The Administrator An Investigation Into The Perceptual Areas Of Difference Between The Various Levels Of An Organization, W. W. Mcintire

Masters Theses

Introduction

It is frequently voiced that most of the problems that occur in organizations are "people problems." There are the result of misunderstandings, differences of interpretation, and inadequate coordination of effort. This study is concerned with this problem area, but it should be made clear that no attempt will be made to investigate "problem people" in organizations. They may legitimately be considered as part of the problem area, however, investigation of them is beyond the realm and scope intended for this study.

Effects Of Radiation Upon Consumption Of Alcohol As A Discriminated Fluid Stimulus In The Rat, Joseph A. Straka Apr 1966

Effects Of Radiation Upon Consumption Of Alcohol As A Discriminated Fluid Stimulus In The Rat, Joseph A. Straka

Masters Theses

Introduction

In the recent history of psychology, considerable interest has arisen concerning the use of radiation (usually as a UCS fitted into a classical conditioning paradigm) to effect changes in behavior. Mechanisms by which radiation induces behavioral changes are obscure, and psychology, along with the disciplines of physiology and medicine, has been attempting to clarify variables in operation.

The study of drug {including alcohol) effects upon behavior has had a somewhat parallel development in the field of psychology in terms of its recency and the obscure nature of the variables operating upon resultant behavior.

These two areas of interest have …

Evaluation Of An Inservice Training Program For Psychiatric Attendants, Homer D. Green Mar 1966

Evaluation Of An Inservice Training Program For Psychiatric Attendants, Homer D. Green

Masters Theses

Introduction

From the time that hospitals were established to care for the mentally ill, a shortage of professional personnel has existed. To a limited extent this shortage has been partially alleviated by the use of non-professional psychiatric help (attendants, aides, nursing assistants, technicians) with varying amounts of training and responsibilities. For over fifty years a continuous effect has been made to improve the quality and quantity of care given to the mental patients in both private and public mental hospitals (Robinson, 1964). Following World War II, increased emphasis has been placed on the training and status of the attendant engaged …

The Prediction Of Trainee Success In Manpower Development And Training Programs, Donald A. Sommerfeld

Masters Theses

Introduction

This study is a direct result of the investigator's three-year exposure to the problems of selection and placement under the Manpower Development and Training Act (MDTA). From July 1962 until June 1965 the investigator was employed as a Personnel Methods Technician for the Michigan Employment Security Commission in Muskegon, Michigan. In this capacity he wrote the initial proposals for Muskegon's MDTA programs during this period. He also implemented the selection of trainees and the placement of graduates for each of twenty MDTA programs. During this time approximately seven hundred trainees were selected for these Muskegon training programs. The cost …
