Masters Theses

"A survey of the ability of basidiomycetes to convert tryptophan, tryptamine and indole acetic acid to other acidic indoles has been made.

The product formed from tryptamine by Tricholoma nudum was identified as indole acetic acid. The product formed by Cantharellus cibarius from D-tryptophan was identified as N-acetyl-D-tryptophan. The products were purified and identified by means of paper chromatography, thin layer chromatography, infrared spectroscopy and melting points.

The conversion of tryptamine and D-tryptophan was also studied in cultures of Leucopaxillus paradoxus, Hygrophorus conicus and Naucoria confragosa. H. conicus, L. paradoxus and N. confragosa transformed tryptamine and indole acetic acid into …

Strain Differences In Alcohol Preference On Guinea Pigs And Experimental Manipulation Of Preference By Forced Alcohol Consumption, Gerald L. Appelman Dec 1966

Strain Differences In Alcohol Preference On Guinea Pigs And Experimental Manipulation Of Preference By Forced Alcohol Consumption, Gerald L. Appelman

Masters Theses

Introduction

The study of the determinants of alcoholism, one of the most perplexing diseases of mankind, entered its most fruitful era of discovery in the laboratory of the animal researcher. A pioneering study of the determinants of alcohol consumption by Richter (1940) indicated that laboratory rats show a preference for alcohol over water beginning at 1.8 per cent ethanol (v/v) solution, and continue to prefer alcohol over water up to a 6 per cent ethanol (v/v) solution. Richter made two important contributions to alcohol research which had broader implications than the presentation of an index of alcohol consumption in rats. …

The Effect Of Neurosecretions From The Cerebral Ganglia On Blood Glucose Levels In Lumbricus Terrestris, Joan Vanderpol Craig Dec 1966

The Effect Of Neurosecretions From The Cerebral Ganglia On Blood Glucose Levels In Lumbricus Terrestris, Joan Vanderpol Craig

Masters Theses

Introduction

The presence of neurosecretory cells in the suprapharyngeal ganglia of Lumbricus terrestris has been well established (B. and E. Scharrer, 1937). Since these cells may well be the only source of hormones in this organism (B. Scharrer, 1959), the question arises as to their role in the animal's regulation of metabolism The particular aspect of this problem investigated here concerns the effect of these neurosecretory substances on the blood glucose levels in L. terrestris.

Preliminary studies by this investigator on glucose levels in earthworms revealed that blood samples of approximately 15 microliters could be obtained from each animal and …

A Comparative Approach Into The Differentiation Of Two Strains Of Staphylococci, Walter D. Hoeksema Aug 1966

A Comparative Approach Into The Differentiation Of Two Strains Of Staphylococci, Walter D. Hoeksema

Masters Theses

Introduction

The purpose of this investigation was to differentiate Staphylococcus aureus phage type 42D from Staphylococcus epidermidis.

The investigation involved four approaches to this differentiation. The first was a selective screening technique on specific media to point out physical and biochemical characteristics and to demonstrate the presence of specific enzymes. The second was a drug survey which was used to show basic susceptibility and resistance to ten different antibiotics. The third was ultra-violet irradiation which was used to discern susceptibility and resistance to the soft rays of this spectrum segment. The fourth was a chromatographic procedure using labeled carbon which …

The Effects Of Estrogenic And Gonadotrophic Hormones On Normal Levels Of Some Blood Chemical Constituents In The Non-Breeding Female Mallard Duck, Wendell F. Hofman Aug 1966

The Effects Of Estrogenic And Gonadotrophic Hormones On Normal Levels Of Some Blood Chemical Constituents In The Non-Breeding Female Mallard Duck, Wendell F. Hofman

Masters Theses

Introduction

In past years, a substantial amount of research has centered on the levels of certain blood chemical constituents in birds, particularly in chickens and pigeons. However, little has been recorded concerning the blood chemical constituents of the mallard duck, Anas platyrhynshos. Likewise, the effects of hormones on its blood chemistry, in conjunction with its reproductive system, have been almost totally unexplored. Therefore, this study, conducted from October 14, 1965, to March 3, 1966, had as its purpose the determination of normal quantitative levels of certain blood chemical constituents (the electrolytes--calcium, sodium, potassium; the proteins--albumin and globulin; and lipids) and …

Effects Of Radiation Upon Consumption Of Alcohol As A Discriminated Fluid Stimulus In The Rat, Joseph A. Straka Apr 1966

Effects Of Radiation Upon Consumption Of Alcohol As A Discriminated Fluid Stimulus In The Rat, Joseph A. Straka

Masters Theses

Introduction

In the recent history of psychology, considerable interest has arisen concerning the use of radiation (usually as a UCS fitted into a classical conditioning paradigm) to effect changes in behavior. Mechanisms by which radiation induces behavioral changes are obscure, and psychology, along with the disciplines of physiology and medicine, has been attempting to clarify variables in operation.

The study of drug {including alcohol) effects upon behavior has had a somewhat parallel development in the field of psychology in terms of its recency and the obscure nature of the variables operating upon resultant behavior.

These two areas of interest have …

A Study Of The Fluctuation Of Some Blood Chemical Constituents In Relation To The Reproductive Cycle Of The Mallard Duck, Edward H. Decker

Masters Theses

Introduction

The purpose of this study was to determine normal levels of several blood chemical constituents (the mineral sodium, potassium and calcium and the organic substances serum cholesterol and serum albumin) for the female mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos) and to examine their relationships as a possible index to reproductive development.

Much research has been done on the chemical composition of the avian egg and only those constituents which are of concern in this study will be discussed in detail. According to Romanoff (1949), studies of the chicken egg have shown that only a few mineral elements are present in relative …

Helianthus Annuus - The Separation And Identification Of A New Fatty Acid, Donald C. Gruber Jun 1965

Helianthus Annuus - The Separation And Identification Of A New Fatty Acid, Donald C. Gruber

Masters Theses

Introduction

The term "fatty acids" was first applied principally to saturated, monobasic carboxylic acids and especially to long chain acids derived from animal and vegetable oils. As time passed and the knowledge of natural fats increased, polyunsaturated, hydroxy, keto and branched chain acids were also found as constituents of these fats and oils and these also came under the heading of fatty acids. Even acids containing alicyclic substituents were found.

More recently the term 11 fatty acid" has been applied to include saturated and unsaturated monobasic carboxylic acids and several other series of substituted acids having carbon skeletons similar to …

An Evaluation Of Alcohol Education Materials In Elementary, Junior High School, And Senior High School Textbooks As Rei.Ated To Student Needs, Daniel L. Paul

Masters Theses

Every state in the United States has statutory provisions requiring alcohol education in the public schools . The earliest of these laws dates back to 1858.Taking these facts into account one might assume that by this time, alcohol education programs would be well established and clearly defined, but most authorities in the field would say that this assumption is incorrect. The reasons for the failure of alcohol education programs to become well established are many and complicated, and are not the function of this paper to discuss except for one aspect, which is one of the contributing factors to this …

Relation Between Use Of Lincomycin And Outgrowth Of Yeast, Howard W. Clapp Jun 1964

Relation Between Use Of Lincomycin And Outgrowth Of Yeast, Howard W. Clapp

Masters Theses

Introduction

The use of antibiotics has increased the average life expectancy of mankind. They have prevented and cured infectious diseases that previously terminated in death. Consequently, recovery is often prompt and complete.

Though a benefit to mankind, the use of antibiotics in the treatment of infectious disease has also been accompanied by new problems. For example, treatment of a primary infection such as a bacterial pneumonitis with a broad spectrum antibiotic, may result in the death of some of the bacteria. More than one species of bacteria, however, are often found in the infected area. If such be the situation, …

A Modified Procedure For The Quantitative Determination Of Fluoride And The Application Of This Procedure To A Fluoride Balance Study In Children, Beatrice Shuang Wu Aug 1963

A Modified Procedure For The Quantitative Determination Of Fluoride And The Application Of This Procedure To A Fluoride Balance Study In Children, Beatrice Shuang Wu

Masters Theses

Introduction

This research problem was done in connection with the fluoride balance studies on twelve children at Plymouth State Home. The retention balance studies of fluoride by children can be studied indirectly by measuring the amounts of fluoride excreted in the urine and feces after administration of the fluoride in water or in vitamins as sodium fluoride. The fluoride balance study was repeated, because in the previous study (19), there were no samples collected for a base day in which the fluoride was not given. The previous data also indicated that fluoride retention was merely a function of the interval …

The Teaching Of Succession Through The Use Of Pond Infusion Cultures, James E. Cole Jul 1963

The Teaching Of Succession Through The Use Of Pond Infusion Cultures, James E. Cole

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

The approach to teaching biology for general education is significant. In a course of this nature, the learning of biological principles should be of primary concern. It is hoped that such principles then will lend themselves to the understanding and use of the scientific approach to everyday happenings. To do this, however, requires that the teacher use the inductive method for developing an understanding of the principles, and the deductive method for applying them.

Planners of these basic biology courses attempt to define areas of real concern and interest to students. Having defined these areas, the planners …

The Effect Of Food And Drug Laws On Producers Of Paper And Paperboard Used For The Packaging Of Food, Charles W. Walton Dec 1962

The Effect Of Food And Drug Laws On Producers Of Paper And Paperboard Used For The Packaging Of Food, Charles W. Walton

Masters Theses

In 1958 the Food Additives Amendment to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act was adopted causing a great deal of concern on the part of producers of packaging material. Any ingredient of the package that might migrate or transfer to food contained in the package became, by definition, a food additive subject to regulation and prior approval of the Food and Drug Administration.

Other acts and regulations have been adopted since 1958 indicative of increasing concern by the Federal Government for consumer welfare. This activity can be expected to have far reaching effects on manufacturers who must depart from …

An Investigation Of The Genetic Basis Of Alcoholism, Daniel F. Malamud Jul 1962

An Investigation Of The Genetic Basis Of Alcoholism, Daniel F. Malamud

Masters Theses

Introduction

Alcoholism: The Disease

"Alcoholism is a chronic disease manifested by repeated implicative drinking so as to cause injury to the drinker's health or to his social or economic functioning" (53). Such a definition of alcoholism points to the disease concept which went unrecognized until recent years. In addition to its medical implications, alcoholism has been the subject of considerable writing and research by academicians in such diverse fields as sociology, psychology, physiology, psychiatry, theology, and law.

At the outset it should be noted that the writer is aware of the arguments and opinions expressed by the advocates of the …

Introduction

In the academic year 1959-1960 the National Science Foundation supported an undergraduate research program at Western: Michigan University for the spectrographic analysis of human hair. This preliminary work concerned itself with determining the quantities of magnesium, iron, and calcium in human hair. The hair samples were taken from a supposedly normal cross section of people. This group consisted of 41 women and 52 men. The ages varied from 2 to 72. Most of the hair samples were collected from a local barber shop and beauty shop, although a small portion of the samples was collected from individuals. Information concerning …

Evaluation Of Hydroxyprogesterone Acetate In The Prevention Of Canine Estrus, Kenneth B. Haas Jul 1961

Evaluation Of Hydroxyprogesterone Acetate In The Prevention Of Canine Estrus, Kenneth B. Haas

Masters Theses

Foreword

Thirty years ago, endocrinology was a laboratory curiosity appreciated by few veterinarians. In those rare instances when the new science escaped from the laboratory and reached the clinic, the endocrine preparations used were extremely crude and often ineffective. In the growth of endocrinology as a science, availability of pure crystalline hormones has played an essential role, and to chemical synthesis must be credited the preparations which make specific endocrine therapy possible today.

In the last two decades endocrinology has come into its own in veterinary medicine, especially in regard to sex endocrinology. But only in the last ten years …
