The Social Implications Of Dante’S Commedia, Judson I. Mather Jun 1965

The Social Implications Of Dante’S Commedia, Judson I. Mather

Masters Theses

Introduction

The focus of this study has derived, in part, from the experience of teaching a course in "The History of Social Thought" to undergraduate sociology majors. The more comprehensive texts in the field accord Dante some notice. But the treatment he receives as a social thinker is uniformly patronizing. One of the most substantial and adequate of these texts, for example -- the three-volume study by Howard Becker and Harry Elmer Barnes-- has this to say:

The key to Dante's character and to his social theory as well is to be found in the fact that "world peace was …

The Influence Of Cation Exchange And Electrolyte Concentrations Upon The Atterberg Limits, Kent J. Schwieger Jan 1965

The Influence Of Cation Exchange And Electrolyte Concentrations Upon The Atterberg Limits, Kent J. Schwieger

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation is to correlate relationships between cation exchange capacity, clay content, and type and concentration of the exchangeable cations upon the Atterberg limits of a soil. Synthetic soils consisting of loessial silt and either an illitic natural deposit, bentonite, ball clay, or kaolin clay were used.

As the percent clay fraction was increased the cation exchange capacity, liquid and plastic limits and plasticity index increased linearly in the clay range. Results also suggested a linear relationship between the liquid and plastic limits and the cation exchange capacity of soils of one hundred percent clay fraction"--Abstract, page …

Matching Of A Horn Antenna To Its Dense Surrounding Media By The Use Of Artificial Dielectric Methods, Paul Arthur Ray

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to design an artificial dielectric slug to match a horn in a media such as water and to discuss a method of determining experimentally its dielectric properties. The design is based on known artificial dielectric methods. The method of determining the dielectric properties is by microwave waveguide reflection techniques. This thesis deals with the theoretical aspects and suggests an experimental method of determining the practicability of such a matching method"--Abstract, page ii.

Use Of Spent Sulphite Liquor For Stabilization Of Fractured Rock And Sealing Off Water Bearing Formations, Laxman Singh Sunda Jan 1965

Use Of Spent Sulphite Liquor For Stabilization Of Fractured Rock And Sealing Off Water Bearing Formations, Laxman Singh Sunda

Masters Theses

"The paper industry, in its process of manufacturing pulp from wood, produces large quantities of a substance called lignin, lignin sulphite, or lignosulphonate. This material has been disposed of as a waste product; however, it does have many potential uses. In this investigation, lignosulfonates were used as agents for bonding rock sections together and, as the chief component of gels, for filling the pores of artificial rock cores. The purposes of these tests were to find how this substance could be used in the mining industry, for stabilizing fractured ground around mine openings and for sealing off water influx into …

The Design Of A Sensitive Probe For Mass Flux Measurements Of Water Vapor In Air, Devendra Vaikunthlal Mehta

Masters Theses

"This investigation pertains to the construction and investigation of a sensitive probe to determine the possibility of measuring the mass flux of water vapor in air under non-flow steady state conditions. The probe was a small electrolysis cell is which the electrolyte (partially hydrated phosphorus pentoxide) was used as the sensing element. The rate of mass transfer was determined by measuring the amount of direct current flowing through the acid film"--Abstract, page i.

A Study Of Re-Evaporation Nuclei, Ronald Dawbarn Jan 1965

A Study Of Re-Evaporation Nuclei, Ronald Dawbarn

Masters Theses

"Classical considerations of the evaporation of a homogeneously nucleated droplet in an atmosphere of low humidity, indicates complete evaporation of the drop. Experimental results however, show that there is left behind a residual nucleus that is quite stable. Condensation occurs on these nuclei at comparatively low supersaturations. Using a specially instrumented cloud chamber, experimental procedures are described which attempt to investigate some of the properties of these nuclei. Various possibilities causing this stability are examined and compared to the experimental results obtained"--page [ii].

An Evaluation Of The Feasibility Of Neutron Microradiography, Maynard L. Arment Jan 1965

An Evaluation Of The Feasibility Of Neutron Microradiography, Maynard L. Arment

Masters Theses

"The metal working industry has used metallography and microradiography extensively in the past decade. X-ray or gamma microradiography has several advantages as compared to metallography, but a disadvantage concerning alloys of adjacent elements; microradiography cannot distinguish between elements 2 or less atomic numbers apart. Attempts were made using neutron microradiography to distinguish between cadmium and tin rich grains. A maximum resolution of 0.017 inches was found with a calculated possibility of a resolution less than 0.002 inches"--Abstract, page ii.

Kinetics Of Base-Catalysed Reactions, Kunjvihari Ramanlal Mehta Jan 1965

Kinetics Of Base-Catalysed Reactions, Kunjvihari Ramanlal Mehta

Masters Theses

"The work of Wulfman on the mechanism of the Michael reactions suggests that the normal Michael reaction is second order kinetically, with the rate being proportional to the concentration of the acceptor and the active form of the addendum. A detailed reaction mechanism of normal Michael reaction was not proposed due to insufficient data which resulted from analytical difficulties. This investigation involves the study of the kinetics of normal Michael reaction from the stand point of base strength, solvent concentration and acidity of the reactants, solvent and products"--Experimental. The Dissolution Of Magnesium In Strong Acids And Neutral Solutions, Cheng-Ken Chi Jan 1965

The Dissolution Of Magnesium In Strong Acids And Neutral Solutions, Cheng-Ken Chi

Masters Theses

"The increasing demand for magnesium and magnesium- base alloys in the manufacture of aircraft has stimulated a great amount of research into the corrosion characteristics of these materials. The result of such research has been the development of suitable magnesium alloys and protective coatings to retard corrosion.

The basic mechanism of the anodic dissolution of metals such as magnesium, zinc, and cadmium in salt solutions is not completely known. Several schools of investigators have proposed different and opposing theories to explain the discrepancies which often arise between coulometer data and the weight loss of metal electrodes in certain salt solutions. …

The Cementing Of Hydraulically Placed Tailing Fill By The Oxidation Products Of Pyrrhotite, Stanley H. Alder Jan 1965

The Cementing Of Hydraulically Placed Tailing Fill By The Oxidation Products Of Pyrrhotite, Stanley H. Alder

Masters Theses

"This thesis has been prepared to make available basic information on the use of the oxidation products of pyrrhotite to cement hydraulic tailing stope fill. As nothing has been published on this subject to date, a review has been made of pertinent information culled from accounts of work in related fields. From this study, a set of equations representing the most likely pyrrhotite oxidation reactions has been evolved and tests supporting these equations performed. Samples of fill, each containing from one to six percent of pyrrhotite, were cemented in the laboratory. They were then examined microscopically, subjected to unconfined compressive …

The Development Of Conical Stress Forms By Explosive Charges, Walter T. Casquino Jan 1965

The Development Of Conical Stress Forms By Explosive Charges, Walter T. Casquino

Masters Theses

"Usually stresses generated by explosive charges during blasting are considered to propagate through materials in a spherical manner. Although conical stress waves had been suggested by a few investigators they have never been clearly defined or studied in the laboratory.

An experimental technique using models was developed to produce conical stress waves from an explosive. Several materials with different properties were selected as models for the purpose of determining whether or not conical waves could be generated in all materials.

This investigation showed that conical stress waves do exist under certain conditions, which would closely approximate those present for much …

Free Convection Heat Transfer From An Inclined Heated Flat Plate In Air, Shu Chien Yung Jan 1965

Free Convection Heat Transfer From An Inclined Heated Flat Plate In Air, Shu Chien Yung

Masters Theses

"An experimental investigation has been performed to determine the free convection heat transfer from a heated flat plate in air moved from the vertical position through three inclined positions to the horizontal position. The hot surface of the plate was facing downward for the horizontal and three inclined positions. Tests were performed at plate surface temperatures from 120°F up to 404°F. Data for the plate surface temperature at about 165°F with the plate in the vertical position agrees very well with previous experimental work. This same data was used to determine a new parameter, introduced into the Pholhausen free convection …

A Study Of The Influence Of Shock Waves On The Stability Of Rock-Bolt Anchorage, Helmut W. Habenicht Jan 1965

A Study Of The Influence Of Shock Waves On The Stability Of Rock-Bolt Anchorage, Helmut W. Habenicht

Masters Theses

"An experimental method was developed to compare strain data for rock and rock bolts when exposed to shock waves released by blasting. During a 32-day period of experimentation, one rock sensor and four rock-bolt sensors were observed simultaneously. By their placement in the side wall of a structurally stable drift, secondary static stresses were excluded. Bolt gage responses, then, could be considered to originate only from a decay of anchorage stability during static conditions or as a reaction to the vibrations. Interpretation of test results indicated a distinct loss in bolt-strain during vibrations, accompanied by a smaller but steady loss …

Anodic Dissolution And Disintegration Of Tin And Valency Of The Tin Ions Going Into Solution, Mrityunjoy Dutta Jan 1965

Anodic Dissolution And Disintegration Of Tin And Valency Of The Tin Ions Going Into Solution, Mrityunjoy Dutta

Masters Theses

"The increased demand for protective coatings on metals and for non-corrosive alloys has stimulated extensive research on the fundamental behavior of metals in corrosive media. One of the problems still unsolved is the nature of the mechanism of the anodic dissolution of metals like beryllium, zinc, magnesium, cadmium, tin, aluminum, iron in aqueous salt solutions. It has been reported in the literature that these metals show discrepancies which often arise between coulometric data and the weight loss of metal electrodes in various media. Several investigators have proposed different and opposing theories to explain the above deviation. The purpose of the …

Field Permeability Determination Of Partially Saturated Fine Grained Soil, Edward G. Rapp Jan 1965

Field Permeability Determination Of Partially Saturated Fine Grained Soil, Edward G. Rapp

Masters Theses

"The determination of water permeability through a soil is necessary to estimate seepage losses from small reservoirs. At the present time, the methods available to conduct this determination in partially saturated fine grained soils are expensive and in most cases not commensurate with the cost or importance of the individual structure. This investigation was conducted to evaluate the use of a proposed, potentially inexpensive field procedure in this situation. A modified borehole apparatus was utilized in field tests to determine the permeability of a partially saturated soil deposit in place. Undisturbed samples from the same location were tested in the …

I. An Investigation Of The Organic Compounds In The Media And Mycelium Of Naucoria Confragosa. Ii. Study Of The Extra-Cellular Pigments Of An Unknown Fungus, Yueh-Tsun Chen

Masters Theses

"The fungal metabolites excreted into the culture fluid by basidiomycetes growing on synthetic glucose media as well as formed in the mycelia of the organisms were investigated in this thesis. Earlier unpublished work had shown that Maucoria confragosa excreted into the medium compounds which were thought to be phenols. Insufficient material was recovered from an ethyl acetate extract of the medium in the present study for further investigation. Colorimetric methods were employed both for the quantitative estimation of reducing sugar not consumed by the microorganisms as well as for a measure of the total organic solids present in the spent …

"The product formed from tryptamine by Trichloloma nudum was identified as indoleacetic acid (IAA) and from tryptophan by Cantharellus cibrarius as indolelactic acid (ILA). The products were extracted from the spent media with organic solvents. Purification and identification of the crystalline transformation products were accomplished by means of paper chromatography, spectrophotometry and thin layer chromatography.

The conversion of tryptamine and tryptophan was also studied in cultures of Lencopaxillus paradoxus, Pluteus granularis and Pleuatus ostreatus. Only Pluteus granularis was found to transform tryptamine into IAA. Lencopaxillus paradoxus transformed tryptamine into oxindoleacetic acid (OIAA).

Paper chromatography proved to be useful …

Stereochemistry Of Chlorinated Diels-Alder Adducts, Harry R. Musser Jan 1965

Stereochemistry Of Chlorinated Diels-Alder Adducts, Harry R. Musser

Masters Theses

"Hexachlorocyclopentadiene and related compounds have been studied extensively in connection with Diels-Alder reactions. Many of the adducts formed are used as intermediates in insecticide syntheses. It is of interest to study the stereochemistry of the adducts of one of the hexachlorocyclopentadiene derivaites. 5,5-Dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrachlorocyclopentadiene and various dienophiles, when allowed to react, yield compounds of the bridges bicyclo [2.2.1] hept-2-ene series. The study of the endo and/or exo configuration of various functional groups such as carboxyl, aldehyde, and hydroxymethyl can be related to the known exo-5-hydroxymethyl1-1,2,3,4-tetrachlorobicyclo-[2.2.1] help-2-ene-7-one"--Introduction, page [1].

Relation Between Use Of Lincomycin And Outgrowth Of Yeast, Howard W. Clapp Jun 1964

Relation Between Use Of Lincomycin And Outgrowth Of Yeast, Howard W. Clapp

Masters Theses

Introduction

The use of antibiotics has increased the average life expectancy of mankind. They have prevented and cured infectious diseases that previously terminated in death. Consequently, recovery is often prompt and complete.

Though a benefit to mankind, the use of antibiotics in the treatment of infectious disease has also been accompanied by new problems. For example, treatment of a primary infection such as a bacterial pneumonitis with a broad spectrum antibiotic, may result in the death of some of the bacteria. More than one species of bacteria, however, are often found in the infected area. If such be the situation, …

The Russian Revolution Of 1905 As Depicted By Contemporary American Reports, With Special Emphasis On The "Bloody Sunday" Incident Of January 22, 1905, Patrick Kay Bidelman

Masters Theses

Preface

On Sunday morning, January 22, 1905, a crowd of workers marched through the streets of St. Petersburg, Russia. They were led by a Russian Orthodox priest, Father George Gapon, who had a petition to grievances to present to Czar Nicholas II. As they converged on the square in front of the Winter Palace, they were fired upon by the Imperial troops. The result was a complete military victory for the autocracy and a casualty rate among the petitioners that has caused the incident to go down in history as "Bloody Sunday."

On Monday, January 23, newspapers throughout the United …

Pachycereus Marginatus Alkaloids, John M. Brewer Jan 1964

Pachycereus Marginatus Alkaloids, John M. Brewer

Masters Theses

Introduction

Serturner's paper, 1817, "Morphis, a New Salt-forming Substance, and Meconic Acid, as the Chief Constituents of Opium", opened a new era of discovery in organic plant chemistry. His isolation of the first alkaloid was soon followed by the isolation or narcotine by Robiquet and strychnine by Pelletier and Caventou. These basic compounds were at first called vegetable alkalies, but were later renamed alkaloids, meaning alkali-like11.
