Mini Memoirs: Poetry As A Medium For Memories, Liesl Anna Counterman
Mini Memoirs: Poetry As A Medium For Memories, Liesl Anna Counterman
Masters Theses
For the critical paper, I explore the use of poetry as a form of memoir. Over the years, I have journaled by writing poetry, and for the purpose of this paper, I have studied the marriage of poetry and memoir. My critical paper research has directed me towards how memoirists (including autobiographers and biographers of the past) have used poetry in their writings and how the truth about the past is verified and enhanced by poetic works. Poetry seems to be a vehicle of preserving truth, thus proving the veracity of the emotions and experiences within a historical context. Since …
American Religion: A Study Of Religious Change From The 1920s Through 1970s, Alexander R. Marks-Katz
American Religion: A Study Of Religious Change From The 1920s Through 1970s, Alexander R. Marks-Katz
Masters Theses
Religion in America persisted along traditional Christian lines until the 1870s. It was then that theological liberalism gained significant headway. The Gilded Age and Progressive Era were still infused with revivals and preachers but there was a growing contingent that challenged the fundamentals of Christian belief. Sometimes this contingent supported revivals but promoted social causes and brought unorthodox biblical interpretations. At other times, they challenged traditional Christianity altogether. By the Great Depression, American culture had undergone such a tremendous amount of change that, faced with adversity, the bottom of religion fell out. Fewer people attended services and contributed funds. More …

Designing Ecotones : Implementing Regenerative Patches In Urban Environments For Transdisciplinary And Transcultural Creativity-Based Education, Cristiane Marie Caro
Masters Theses
This thesis has been written to emphasize the educational, social, political and environmental potentials of collectively designed regenerative ecosystems. It aims to encourage students and educators to transform disturbed null patches in urban environments to amplify the scope of the students’ education by simultaneously developing a social ecosystem and cultivating environmental sensibility. I outline the formation of the Regenerative Earth Collective, a student-run group aiming to address topics of sustainability at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and their work to design, implement and maintain groundwork for hands-on, experiential learning. I illustrate the Plot (manifested as a student-run community …

Artful Healing: Exploring Creative Expression And Play In Children's Hospitals, Phoebe Strobino
Masters Theses
This thesis explores the role and accessibility of creative expression and play in children’s hospitals, and the impact these ideas have on patients. I explored these ideas through teaching four lessons at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. Two of these lessons were taught in group sessions, and two were taught in one-on-one sessions, with participants ranging in age. Following an introduction to each lesson, I provide the plan itself along with general observations and reflections on teaching. Due to the nature of the setting, information is kept purposefully broad throughout my observations in order to respect the anonymity …

Care, Inclusivity, And Accessibility In Glass Art Education, Bridget Provan
Care, Inclusivity, And Accessibility In Glass Art Education, Bridget Provan
Masters Theses
In glass art education care, inclusivity, and accessibility have been recurring themes that have kept arising in my journey. Specifically, why are they absent? As an art educator, I feel it is important to support and educate all students and their entire being. As an art student when I received any care I felt it was extraordinary but, in reflection, I feel it should be the minimum an educator provides. In my thesis I explore the importance of care, inclusivity, and accessibility in glass education and how to incorporate all three into multiple educational settings. This thesis is a culmination …

Contemporary Eco Theory In Art Education: Field Notes And Desire Paths, Margaret K. Mccullough
Masters Theses
This thesis is an investigation into patterns and overlaps of three critical elements in our world, art, nature, and education. Integral to this investigation and the contributions to humanity of these three are the accurate depiction of specific realities, upon which Science and the majority of global citizens agree, aesthetic sensibility, as well as beneficent solutions (i.e. those which do no harm.) Together we will examine the intersection of subjects, what they combine to achieve. We will consider how, taught and learned in unison, they may take on a position of greater prominence in efforts to solve real world problems. …

Vulva Gazing: Power And The Gendered Body, Aaliya Jamal Zaidi
Vulva Gazing: Power And The Gendered Body, Aaliya Jamal Zaidi
Masters Theses
How does a gendered gaze determine what we feel shame about?
In patriarchal society, the male gaze is normal. Within its sights, the vulva, the external female sexual and reproductive organs, is viewed negatively — censored and ignored, or labeled with euphemisms and slurs across cultures. The modern western medical canon upholds and reinforces this view of the vulva, through a combination of disinterest and omission. This cultural aversion leads to a personal aversion. For people with vulvas this manifests in a lack of information about their own bodies which leads to shame, pain and even death.
Vulva Gazing is …
Regenerative Residences: Shrinking Stress Levels In The Sky, Peter De Lande Long
Regenerative Residences: Shrinking Stress Levels In The Sky, Peter De Lande Long
Masters Theses
Issues of overcrowding and overstimulation plague urban environments, which exacerbate social isolation and, in turn, heighten city dwellers’ levels of stress and anxiety. How can architecture mediate stimuli to be positively conducive to mood, behavior, and overall health? Given that social isolation is an intrinsically spatial issue that design can address, this thesis proposes a small-scale community living model with the intent of improving mental health and clarity for a user group of young, mentally vulnerable professionals in New York City.
16 E 16th Street becomes the architectural framework for addressing these issues. Moving away from the capitalistic endeavor of …

Re:Connection: Exercises In Unplugging And Mindfully Reconnecting, E. J. Roseman
Masters Theses
How can architecture encourage focused attention and mindfulness in an increasingly distracted and distractible world? As a primary means of connectivity in the 21st century, smartphones and social media have provided unparalleled efficiencies, connectivity and entertainment. However, constant engagement with richly-pixelated virtual worlds has also brought about mass addiction to devices as college students log more compulsive “screen time” than ever before. Mental health issues such as crippling anxiety, diminished attention spans, and unhappiness, are on the rise as students disconnect from the physical world and are consumed by their virtual one.
This thesis is comprised of a series of …
To Be Seen To Be Heard: Embracing Social Anxiety In The Workplace, Jingxuan Chen
To Be Seen To Be Heard: Embracing Social Anxiety In The Workplace, Jingxuan Chen
Masters Theses
Social anxiety has become the third most common mental illness in the U.S, but there still is a lack of public understanding of this issue as it often goes unspoken. Through my research, I found that social anxiety is deeply entangled with environments, situations, and interpersonal interactions; especially within unfamiliar, uncomfortable, and unsafe situations.
Workplace exacerbates social anxiety as people are constantly being evaluated by others, exposed to new situations, and required to perform well, which leaves no room for people to share the unspoken and seek support. Guided by the questions of what social anxiety is and how it …
Last Sunset : Design To Alleviate Social Isolation For Chinese Elderly, Linghui Li
Last Sunset : Design To Alleviate Social Isolation For Chinese Elderly, Linghui Li
Masters Theses
China has one of the fastest aging populations in the world. The country’s rapid economic development and urbanization have separated millions of older adults from their children, leading to empty nest families where the elderly must fend for themselves without assistance. Design in the modern era caters to the younger generation with more consumption power while neglecting the needs of these older adults.
In China, from the moment a child is born, confinement centers, preschools, and tutoring institutions, those venues are common throughout the urban fabric. Which spaces are mainly designed for the Chinese elderly? Besides meeting necessary physical needs …
The Cthulhu Journey : Storytelling Through An Architectural Immersive Experience, Rui Zhang
The Cthulhu Journey : Storytelling Through An Architectural Immersive Experience, Rui Zhang
Masters Theses
The exhibition of sequential art is becoming increasingly popular. The subjects of these shows vary from fantasy, horror to science fiction depending on the style of authors. Compared with other 2d images, sequential art requires more narrative framing. Typical exhibitions show sequential art like regular images, however narrative is the essence of sequential art. This thesis will find a way to exhibit sequential art forms in a way that respects that they are based in storytelling. I will develop an immersive experience of sequential art. Immersion is also a narrative-based experience, if we combine the immersive experience with the sequential …
Dear City, Give Me Some Space; Creating Space For Ephemeral Forces In A City, Abinaya Sivaprakasam Thamilarasan
Dear City, Give Me Some Space; Creating Space For Ephemeral Forces In A City, Abinaya Sivaprakasam Thamilarasan
Masters Theses
Architecture of the past was regarded as a concrete entity, both in its materiality and approach, unresponsive to change within a city. Climatic and societal shifts greatly impact cities ill-prepared to adjust. How can the intractable architecture of the past become flexible? Does the current environmental devastation we’re witnessing demand architecture that can embrace, rather than neglect, such shifts?
Situated in Chennai, a densifying coastal metropolis in India, the adaptation focuses on two key shifts. Firstly, the climatic shifts: the alternating patterns of severe flooding, and periods of droughts. Second, the transient youth population within the city. They both share …
One Land / One Ocean: Reactivate Coastal Commons In Urban Territory, Chengie Zhang
One Land / One Ocean: Reactivate Coastal Commons In Urban Territory, Chengie Zhang
Masters Theses
We all live in the same common -– the ocean common, sharing various common pool resources. With industrialization coming after capitalism, the resource regime is shifting and developing. The Blue Revolution and industrial aquaculture stand out as a strategy to efficiently gain resources to meet the population growth and the resource demands. However, it will reveal another form of cultural exploitation. People in the global south will become a labor resource for the global north and increase extreme coastal poverty brought by the depletion of mangroves for land and industrial places. In this book, I want to discuss the possibility …
Adaptive Reduce: Forging Architectural Futures Through Degrowth, Erika Kane
Adaptive Reduce: Forging Architectural Futures Through Degrowth, Erika Kane
Masters Theses
There is widespread awareness of the damage caused by anthropocentric habits in the West, and there have been great strides in development of “green” materials and solutions. But what is the point of building more, though greener, if we are still building endlessly without utilizing the abundance within the built environment that typically gets dismissed as “waste”? This thesis seeks to translate the concept of degrowth, the downscaling of production and consumption, into architectural language, for more regenerative, equitable and collectivist futures.
The following proposal explores how an architecture of degrowth can facilitate sharing within a community and reclamation of …
Breaking | Grounding | Growing: Expanding The Rhode Island Gardening Reentry Programs As A Pathway Towards Stability, Juliana Soltys
Breaking | Grounding | Growing: Expanding The Rhode Island Gardening Reentry Programs As A Pathway Towards Stability, Juliana Soltys
Masters Theses
What happens to the over two million people incarcerated in U.S. prisons and jails?
Changing in sentencing laws and policies have created a cycle of imprisonment, racially isolating and oppressing BIPOC communities. Reintegration and reentry programs are an avenue to break the cycle of recidivism. Through my work, I have developed hands-on, structured opportunities for justice-involved adults to rebuild a life for themselves by increasing the accessibility of gardening reentry programs. This project creates a space for mentorship and support for Rhode Island’s formerly incarcerated people with the goal of helping them to develop vital life skills through growing and …

Field Guide To Gendered Public Life : Balancing The Preservation Of The Existing Vibrant Public Life With The Improvement Of The Female Experience, Christina Koutsoukou
Masters Theses
This thesis examines urban design practices in cities with long history, vibrant social cultures and complex cultural dynamics. Using Thessaloniki as a case study, it focuses on negative gendered experiences caused by some of these local cultural norms.
The study aims to understand and reveal to what extent these elements have shaped and reinforced experiences in the public realm, in order to propose more gender-inclusive approaches that can sustainably coexist with the city’s features forming its vibrant public life.
The research involves an analysis of the city’s built environment followed by a close investigation of the ways the city operates …
Re-Order The Order Of Thing, Yingxi Sabrina Ji
Re-Order The Order Of Thing, Yingxi Sabrina Ji
Masters Theses
Humanocentrism positions humans as the measure of all things; what we know as the ‘real’ or ‘true’ is perceived through this limited perspective. As a designer, I challenge the hierarchy, actively moving away from the notion that inanimate objects are subjugated matter.
In this body of work, I turn to actions of world-building to create immersive experiences where ‘objects’ become ‘subjects.’ They are rescaled and re-centered — called into prominence to become protagonists on the cultural and environmental stage. Through generating, collaging, and juxtaposing recycled facts, imagery and organic materials using digital filters, I insert absurdity as a breakpoint to …
For A Moment, I Was Lost ; A Visual Reflection On The Process Of Grief And Mortality Within The Home, Adam Chiang-Harris
For A Moment, I Was Lost ; A Visual Reflection On The Process Of Grief And Mortality Within The Home, Adam Chiang-Harris
Masters Theses
Grief is typically experienced following a loved one’s unexpected death. It is human nature to experience grief or bereavement as a way of processing the end of a person's life and coping mechanism of the living. In cases where we have pre-knowledge of a person's inevitable departure due to illness, such as with terminal illnesses like Alzheimers, grief happens in a longer period preceding death. In this circumstance, caregivers, friends, and family, must endure a duration of hardship dictated by the progression of the disease while knowing the fated outcome of a person's life. Typically this period caused by the …
Community Conservation & Engagement Through The Architecture Of Public Transportation, Liam Costello
Community Conservation & Engagement Through The Architecture Of Public Transportation, Liam Costello
Masters Theses
A good public transportation system......should be extensive, quick, and efficient, while also being equitable and accessible as well as environmentally friendly and resilient to cope with climate change and rising sea levels. Until the 1980s, Philadelphia had an extensive streetcar network. From 1977 until 1992, however, all lines serving northern Philadelphia were abandoned, leaving the city’s once-expansive public transit system a shell of its former self. The communities formerly served by streetcar have the lowest average household income in the city and are mainly communities of color. Additionally, many of these residents do not own cars. Therefore, the people who …
Remnants, Sarah Chriss
Remnants, Sarah Chriss
Masters Theses
Remnants is a revision of our interaction with land extraction through reimagining processes of representation and image-making. By altering perspective and focus, the visual effects of commodity culture shift toward the consequences that occur before and after our consumption. Dependably lost in translation, spatial and temporal information of material exchanges across the globe uphold and preserve the synergy of our commodity transactions. In a field constantly playing with and pushing against the boundaries of representation, remnants aim to redraw lost connections of material transformations through a granite quarry in Rhode Island. Representation is a tool to revise visual narratives that …
Moving Through Time, Anca Gherghiceanu
Moving Through Time, Anca Gherghiceanu
Masters Theses
Post-communism life in Romania is a duality: people fleeting the country in search of a better life and the simultaneous shrinking cities due to this migration. The built fabric of the city holds distorted nostalgia for those who have left and the burning reality that surrounds the ones that remain. It results in popular villages and cities starting to be abandoned at a massive rate. The migrant story in search of a new life cultivates a journey of loneliness, sacrifice, and sorrow. This thesis will shine light on the physiological effects of mass migration in Romania through satirical editing and storytelling, …
Food For An Island : On The Relationships Between Agriculture, Architecture And Land, Melinda Groenewegen
Food For An Island : On The Relationships Between Agriculture, Architecture And Land, Melinda Groenewegen
Masters Theses
Hawai‘i is in a food crisis relying on 85-90% of food to be imported to the islands while 41% of its agricultural lands are unfarmed. My thesis focuses on O‘ahu's broken food system and restoring the community’s identity and relationship to their food and land. On an urban scale, the project maps out the agricultural lands of O‘ahu that are being underutilized and owned by large corporations. Then, the project zooms into a town as an example of how to reinterpret the land. The chosen site was a sugar plantation and is still currently owned by Castle and Cooke. Next, …
Unnoticeable City Corners, Yuchen Liu
Unnoticeable City Corners, Yuchen Liu
Masters Theses
Walking on the city streets every day, how many times have you noticed the corners between buildings? Do you feel comfortable stopping over that squeezed space? As the urban population increases, the cities seek either outward expansion or vertical development. The taller and denser skyscrapers that emerge from the city gives rise to the small corners which are seemingly useless. Besides, cities growth is problematic because the elimination of the feeling of belonging may harm individuals mental health.
The corner is an intimate space, it is a space for everyone in the city. It could be a bookstore, tea house, …
Cycle Of Care: A Study Based On Home-Care Elderly Living In Beijing, China, Wenyue Remi Qiu
Cycle Of Care: A Study Based On Home-Care Elderly Living In Beijing, China, Wenyue Remi Qiu
Masters Theses
In China, the aging society has accelerated the elderly care industry to grow into three major systems: home-based care, community-based care, and institutional care facility. All these systems receive financial and political government support, yet the later two draw more social awareness. My thesis project investigates the structures of these current systems by focusing on the demographics in Beijing.
Although in recent years the research shows an upward trend in seniors’ acceptance of living in institutional care facilities, the elderly are still more willing to be surrounded by activities and people that whom they are familiar. In order to guarantee …
