Exploring The Oncolytic Potentail Of A Double Knock-Out Tanapoxvirus Containing Flic Transgene, Esaw W. Kurban May 2015

Exploring The Oncolytic Potentail Of A Double Knock-Out Tanapoxvirus Containing Flic Transgene, Esaw W. Kurban

Masters Theses

Since the emergence of oncolytic viruses (OVs), OVs have seen success in clinical trials and are a vital alternative treatment for cancer. Colorectal cancers are diseases which cause substantial health issues in the developed world, but current invasive treatment methods do not perform well in patients with advanced disease. We have explored the potential of tanapoxvirus (TPV) for its oncolytic virothrapy in two manners; specific gene deletion and non-targeted gene deletion. The non-targeted mutation of TPV’s genome was attempted using N-methyl-N-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (NTG) and N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU) as alkylating chemical. Specific gene deletion involved knocking-out a thymidine kinase gene (TPV-66R) and a …

Computational Modeling Of Β5-Β6 Carbapenemase Loop In Wild Type And Selected Mutants Of Oxa-24 Class D Β-Lactamase, James Roland Lafleur Apr 2015

Computational Modeling Of Β5-Β6 Carbapenemase Loop In Wild Type And Selected Mutants Of Oxa-24 Class D Β-Lactamase, James Roland Lafleur

Masters Theses

Bacterial resistance to antibiotic therapies, especially to β-lactams, is an increasing problem. β-lactamases are the main source of clinical resistance to these antibiotics, and the class D β-lactamases are one of the most rapidly expanding classes of these enzymes. The emergence of class D enzymes with the ability to hydrolyze the newest family of β-lactams - the carbapenems - is a serious concern for the healthcare system as carbapenems are last resort antibiotics: ideal for severe infections after other therapies have failed. Class D β-lactamases are very diverse in terms of sequence and substrate profile, and it remains unclear what …

Comparison Of Sutures And Devices Used In Closure Following Partial Nephrectomy Suturing, Bikal Paka Apr 2015

Comparison Of Sutures And Devices Used In Closure Following Partial Nephrectomy Suturing, Bikal Paka

Masters Theses

Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN) is an effective surgical procedure to remove a small renal tumor, while preserving the remainder of the kidney. However, it is a technically challenging procedure to maintain hemostatic condition on the kidney during LPN suturing. Three different experiments were conducted to explore the characteristics and limitations of the current mechanism for tissue approximation during LPN procedures.

During the first experiment, a standard suture anchor Hem-o-lok device, a standard stop knot, and three prototype devices were compared to each other based on the amount of tension that could be placed on a suture before there was a …

Durability Of Sutures Used In Partial Nephrectomy: Tested Across Commonly Used Diameters And Materials Stopped With Lapra-Ty® Suture Clips And Hem-O-Lok® Ligation Systems Under A Given Tension, Nadia Sunny Apr 2015

Durability Of Sutures Used In Partial Nephrectomy: Tested Across Commonly Used Diameters And Materials Stopped With Lapra-Ty® Suture Clips And Hem-O-Lok® Ligation Systems Under A Given Tension, Nadia Sunny

Masters Theses

The primary healing of soft tissue incision advances in the first fourteen days after surgery. Sutures used to close the incision are terminated with knots to last over this period under tension inside the tissue. However, knots significantly reduce the tensile strength of the sutures, and make the surgery closing time longer and tedious. Suture clips are used to overcome these limitations. It was found in prior researches that sutures slip out of the suture clips, although the manufacturer of the LAPRA-TY® suture clips claims endurance of this product under tension for at least fourteen days. Use of suture clips …

Subcutaneous Tissue Depth Over Intraosseous Infusion Sites In A Cadaveric Model, Megan Marie Glazier Apr 2015

Subcutaneous Tissue Depth Over Intraosseous Infusion Sites In A Cadaveric Model, Megan Marie Glazier

Masters Theses

BACKGROUND: When emergent intravenous access is not available an intraosseous (IO) infusion is performed. To accurately perform an IO infusion, the healthcare provider must precisely palpate and identify the associated anatomical landmark for placement. A thicker layer of subcutaneous tissue over the insertion site can make this process difficult, leading to an increased risk of misplacement. PURPOSE: To relate the subcutaneous tissue depth with body mass index (BMI) and percent body fat in order to better understand IO placement sites in relation to these body composition factors. SUBJECTS: Male and female unembalmed cadavers (n=22) between the ages of 54-95 years …

Evolution Of Invasive Species In Response To Management: Potential For Herbicide Resistance In Watermilfoil, Lindsey-Ann Louise Schulte Apr 2015

Evolution Of Invasive Species In Response To Management: Potential For Herbicide Resistance In Watermilfoil, Lindsey-Ann Louise Schulte

Masters Theses

Herbicides are commonly used to control invasive plants. While agricultural weed scientists have focused on herbicide resistance, little is known about its importance in nonagricultural settings. Hybrid Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum x M. sibiricum) is an invasive aquatic plant that is frequently managed with herbicides throughout the United States. In this thesis, I consider the potential for natural populations of this taxon evolving resistance to 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), the most commonly used systemic herbicide. Evolutionary change in a trait between generations as a result of selection requires both genetically based variation of the trait within a generation (heritable …

Children Birth To Age Three With Feeding Difficulties: Systems Level Perspectives Of Supports, Needs, And Interagency Collaboration, Sondra M. Stegenga Apr 2015

Children Birth To Age Three With Feeding Difficulties: Systems Level Perspectives Of Supports, Needs, And Interagency Collaboration, Sondra M. Stegenga

Masters Theses

Early identification and treatment of feeding difficulties greatly improves outcomes for young children with feeding difficulties (Williams et al., 2006). However, identifying and addressing feeding difficulties in young children, birth to age three, is complex; requiring not only interdisciplinary collaboration (Arvedson, 2008; Bruns & Thompson, 2010; Lefton-Greif & Arvedson, 2008; Williams et al., 2006) but also interagency collaboration due to the various partners involved in service provision for young children, birth to age three (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 2004). When such interagency collaboration is needed, systems level structural supports are shown to levy the greatest impact on outcomes (Tseng …

Addressing Demand For Sex Trafficking In Sweden And The United Kingdom: An Interpretive Policy Analysis Of Demand Reduction Policies, In Consideration Of The Principles Of Deterrence Theory, Katee Stahl Apr 2015

Addressing Demand For Sex Trafficking In Sweden And The United Kingdom: An Interpretive Policy Analysis Of Demand Reduction Policies, In Consideration Of The Principles Of Deterrence Theory, Katee Stahl

Masters Theses

In recent years, the problem of sex trafficking has migrated to the forefront of prostitution policy discussions, shifting the focus away from arguments surrounding the morality of prostitution, and instead, to consideration of the most effective prostitution policy approach to combat sex trafficking. One popular solution focuses on reducing the demand for sex trafficking by reducing the overall demand for prostitution. In order to reduce demand for prostitution, people must be deterred from purchasing sexual services, in any form, which may be accomplished by criminalizing the purchase of prostitution. The present inquiry will compare the demand reduction approaches of Sweden …

An Exploration Of Negative Family Factors And Substance Use Amongst Adolescents: The Lasting Effects Of Family Substance Use, Parental Criminality, And Parental Corporal Punishment, Melissa Ann Murray

Masters Theses

Studies have shown that there is a connection between negative family influences and adolescent deviance. The purpose of this study was to investigate how negative family factors may lead to adolescent substance use. The study examines literature that suggests that negative family factors may trigger adolescent substance use. This study utilized secondary data from the 1995 National Survey of Adolescents in the United States (Kilpatrick and Saunders, 1995). A representative sample of adolescents (ages 12-17) and adult parents from the United States was analyzed (n = 4,023). This study examined the direct effects negative family factors have on adolescent alcohol …

Evaluation Of Teachers Of Students With Low-Incidence Disabilities, Martyann Guiney Apr 2015

Evaluation Of Teachers Of Students With Low-Incidence Disabilities, Martyann Guiney

Masters Theses

Current reforms of teacher evaluation systems in the state of Michigan are meant to improve teacher effectiveness, resulting in increased student growth and achievement. However, little research exists to support best practices in the evaluation of special education teachers. The evaluation of special education teachers involves many unique challenges which are especially apparent when evaluating teachers of students with lowincidence disabilities. The tools and processes being proposed by the state are born from research within general education and, consequently, may not be effective in meeting the unique challenges of evaluating special education teachers. The perceptions of special education administrators regarding …

Female Mate Choice In A Mainland Population Of The Strawberry Poison Frog, Oophaga Pumilio, Meaghan Gade Apr 2015

Female Mate Choice In A Mainland Population Of The Strawberry Poison Frog, Oophaga Pumilio, Meaghan Gade

Masters Theses

Sexual selection and female mate choice are driving forces in the evolution and maintenance of biological diversity, and may function in the evolution of many secondary sexual characteristics throughout multiple taxa. Female mate selection has been experimentally shown to drive the evolution of color between the polytypic populations of the dendrobatid frog, Oophaga pumilio, in the Bocas del Toro archipelago in Panama. However, limited studies exist examining biologically relevant female mate choices within a single population. Using analogous experimental arenas from previous studies, females were presented with two males exhibiting phenotypic extremes from within the same population at La Selva …

Assessment Of Northern Bobwhite Survival And Fitness At Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge, Arkansas, Jacob W. Doggett

Masters Theses

In the West Gulf Coastal Plains (WGCP) northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) numbers are declining faster than range-wide averages and such declines have been linked to the consequences of land management within the region. Management for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis) has benefitted northern bobwhite by restoring mature pine-grassland ecosystems in some areas of the region; however, at Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge, Crossett, Arkansas, USA, the bobwhite population was not increasing despite the availability of seemingly suitable habitat from management for the endangered species. To understand factors that may be affecting bobwhite survival on Felsenthal National …

Derivatization And Separation Of Natural Estrogens (Estrone, 17Β-Estradiol, And Estriol) Using Gas Chromatography With Flame Ionization Detection (Gc-Fid), Dena L. Guptill

Masters Theses

A major cause of concern for estrogens found in the environment is that even at very low concentrations (10-100 ng/L) they can have a negative effect on aquatic ecosystems by disrupting endocrine systems. Due to the increasing importance of monitoring the levels of estrogens in the environment, a detection method was developed to identify and quantify three natural estrogens (estrone, 17β-estradiol and estriol) using gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). In addition, the efficacy of two derivatizing agents, N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl) acetamide (BSTA) and N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide (BSTFA), was evaluated. The GC detector (FID) was most responsive with E3, followed by E1 and …

Emotional Intelligence As A Mediator In The Relationship Between Mindfulness And Subjective Well-Being, Christopher Griebel Jan 2015

Emotional Intelligence As A Mediator In The Relationship Between Mindfulness And Subjective Well-Being, Christopher Griebel

Masters Theses

Mindfulness can be defined as an awareness fostered by regulating one's attention in a particular manner over time, on purpose, in the present moment, and in a non-judgmental manner (Kabat-Zinn, 2012). In attempting to identify some of the mechanisms of action through which mindfulness positively impacts well-being, recent literature has suggested the possible role that emotional intelligence (EI) might play (Schutte & Malouff, 2011; Wang & Kong, 2014). The present study attempted to empirically verify the proposed mechanism of action. In addition, the study conceptualized mindfulness as a multidimensional construct by adopting the five-facet model of mindfulness (Baer, Smith, Hopkins, …

Branding A Cohesive Identity: The Case Of Northern Illinois Alliance, Ashley Gocken Jan 2015

Branding A Cohesive Identity: The Case Of Northern Illinois Alliance, Ashley Gocken

Masters Theses

This paper reflects upon a communication action plan that was developed for Northern Illinois Alliance. After examination of its current communication, competitor communication, research from Adayana (a research firm), and discussions with NIA's general manager, it was determined that NIA suffers from a lack of cohesive organizational identity and overall branding. Therefore, organizational identity and branding were used as the framework for the communication action plan. The paper outlines data collection, reasoning for the proposed tactics within the communication action plan, and an overall evaluation from NIA's general manager.

The Validity Of The Obsessive-Compulsive Syndromes As Emotional Disorders, Doty Jennings Jan 2015

The Validity Of The Obsessive-Compulsive Syndromes As Emotional Disorders, Doty Jennings

Masters Theses

Recent changes to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders have grouped together syndromes which are referred to as the obsessive-compulsive spectrum (OCS). The grouping of these syndromes is disputed because of lack of empirical verification for an organization purportedly based on research that supports similarity of observed symptoms. The taxonomy of emotional disorders was tested as an alternative model. Consistent with the model of the emotional disorders, this empirical research tested two proposed characteristics. The first was whether three OCS syndromes (hoarding syndrome, body dysmorphic syndrome, and obsessive compulsive syndromes) shared the broad factor of neuroticism or negative …

Age Is Just A Number: Using Economic And Social Models In The Millennial Generation To Predict Policy Support And Political Beliefs, Lindsey E. Juszczak Jan 2015

Age Is Just A Number: Using Economic And Social Models In The Millennial Generation To Predict Policy Support And Political Beliefs, Lindsey E. Juszczak

Masters Theses

Generational succession is an interesting phenomenon that occurs in all social sciences. The human generations overlap one another, but researchers have defined several generations to which a certain age belongs: Baby Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y, and the Millennials. Being born in a particular time frame could affect the attitudes, beliefs, and values a person holds in general. This paper looks at the generational variable to predict six policy areas, asking the question: is there a millennial age difference that predicts policy support for Social Security spending, military spending, abortion, same-sex marriage, environmental spending, and climate change? Using data from …

Human Trafficking And National Security - Policy Responses, Douglas V. Peterson Jan 2015

Human Trafficking And National Security - Policy Responses, Douglas V. Peterson

Masters Theses

Human trafficking poses a threat to national security and undermines global order. Trafficking exploits sovereign borders and undermines state legitimacy by highlighting failures of governance. This thesis seeks to understand policy responses to human trafficking, which are essential to providing resilient national security while upholding human rights.

I conducted a mixed methods analysis to examine three levels of government response to trafficking: domestic, regional/international, and foreign domestic measures. I examined how the United States Senate develops anti-trafficking legislation, how human rights regimes are developing within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and how specific Southeast Asian nations have responded …

Examining College Faculty And Staff's Levels Of Confidence And Preparedness In Recognizing And Responding To Distressed Students, Rachel L. Chlebanowski

Masters Theses

Mental health on college campuses is a large focus, as students attending college with diagnosed mental illnesses are becoming more prevalent (Hunt & Eisenberg, 2010). While college campuses should be a safe and supportive environment for students, many faculty and staff do not know the resources available to students, nor are faculty and staff able to identify when students are suffering from a mental illness (Bateman, 1997). This study was designed to identify staff and faculty's ability to work with students with mental illness, including identifying warning signs, as well as recognizes campus resources. The study took place at a …

"Fine Dignity, Picturesque Beauty, And Serious Purpose": The Reorientation Of Suffrage Media In The Twentieth Century, Emily Scarbrough Jan 2015

"Fine Dignity, Picturesque Beauty, And Serious Purpose": The Reorientation Of Suffrage Media In The Twentieth Century, Emily Scarbrough

Masters Theses

Throughout the first half century of the woman's suffrage movement, the women of the movement were depicted as dastardly, masculine women who usurped the family structure with their penchant for politics. In the twentieth century, a new generation of woman's suffragists took command of their appearance in the media. Instead of controversial figures, woman's suffragists were envisioned as normal, beautiful women and mothers. Through the use of mass media, woman suffragists restructured their campaign to convince the general public that society needed women to clean up politics. In doing so, suffragists sacrificed their goals of sexual equality in favor of …

Types And Frequency Of Bullying, Victimization, And Defending Behaviors Among Special And Regular Education Students, Ashley Ann Potocki Jan 2015

Types And Frequency Of Bullying, Victimization, And Defending Behaviors Among Special And Regular Education Students, Ashley Ann Potocki

Masters Theses

Bullying and victimization can have a negative impact on all students. This study compared frequency and types of bully, victim, and defending behaviors that occur in general education and special education. The three types of bullying and victimization include verbal, physical, and relational bullying, while the three types of defending include reporting, confronting, and helping. Due to the fact that the majority of research in the past has focused on the general education population of students, little is known about bullying, victimization, and defending behaviors among children in special education. An additional goal of this study was to compare the …

The Effectiveness Of Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies For Teaching English Reading Skills To Hispanic English Language Learners, Michelle Watson Jan 2015
