The Separation Of The Rare Earths Neodymium And Praseodymium By Precipitation As Chloride, Stanley Milton Kulifay Jan 1947

The Separation Of The Rare Earths Neodymium And Praseodymium By Precipitation As Chloride, Stanley Milton Kulifay

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to provide a means of preparing highly purified samples of neodymium and praseodymium compounds when the material to be refined already exists in a state of approximate purity. The method described cannot be profitably used to purify the individual rare earths without first concentrating them. The process is not intended to be quantitative, for it is a fractional crystallization technique using a concentrated hydrochloric acid medium"--Introduction, page 1.

Ceramic Possibilities Of Some Missouri Clays And Shales, Leonard Nathanael Larson Jan 1947

Ceramic Possibilities Of Some Missouri Clays And Shales, Leonard Nathanael Larson

Masters Theses

"Although many of the shales and clays of Missouri have in the past been, or are presently being used for the manufacture of heavy clay products such as face brick, common brick, sewer pipe, and tile, there is in these post-war years a significant shortage of these products within the state and country. Especially in the northwestern part of Missouri is there a distinct shortage, as only one structural clay plant is known to be operating in that area. The St. Louis and Southeastern Missouri districts are better prepared to meet construction demands, with several structural clay plants operating at …

The Behavior Of The Metallic Stearates In Chromatography, Theodore Jack Roemer Jan 1947

The Behavior Of The Metallic Stearates In Chromatography, Theodore Jack Roemer

Masters Theses

"While research has been done on the chromatographic adsorption of the metallic ions, it has been confined mainly to the metallic salts in aqueous solutions. Considerable success has been met in the separation of the cations, but certain combinations have proved to be difficult to separate. Therefore, it would seem to be proper to examine the adsorptive behavior of the metallic ions in an organic medium to see if separation could be improved. This seems plausible since it is known that separations of organic substances have been very successful in organic reagents. Since the common inorganic metallic salts are not …

A Study Of Certain Properties Of A Cobalt-Chromium-Manganese Alloy For High Temperature Service, Robert Lewis Ray Jan 1947

A Study Of Certain Properties Of A Cobalt-Chromium-Manganese Alloy For High Temperature Service, Robert Lewis Ray

Masters Theses

"The vast amount of attention that has been given to the development of high-temperature service alloys since about 1940 has resulted in the production of numerous compositions for many elevated temperature applications. Particularly in the aircraft industry, with the jet engine, and the power industry, with the gas turbine, have these applications been most demanding. War research has developed a large number of high-temperature service alloys, many of which are in use today, and the alloy ingredients vary widely...it may be readily be seen that there is no one alloy, or one system of alloys which has been developed that …

The Preparation Of Elementary Fluorine And Its Reactions With Certain Organic Compounds, Robert Knox Neuman Jan 1947

The Preparation Of Elementary Fluorine And Its Reactions With Certain Organic Compounds, Robert Knox Neuman

Masters Theses

"This work had two main objectives: (1) The construction of an electrolytic cell for the production of fluorine, (2) the preparation of some organic compounds containing fluorine. This research was undertaken because of the growing importance of fluorine chemistry, particularly in the field or organic chemistry. Due to the extreme activity of fluorine, it is theoretically possible to prepare many times more fluorine-containing organic compounds than there are known organic compounds today. It has been predicted that fluorine-containing products will be developed to include new and useful dyes, plastics, pharmaceuticals, lubricants, tanning agents, metal fluxes, fumigants, insecticides, germicides, fire extinguishers, …

An Investigation Of The Colorimetric Methods For The Determination Of Fluorine By The Zirconium Alizarin Sulfonate Method, William Lewis Break Jan 1947

An Investigation Of The Colorimetric Methods For The Determination Of Fluorine By The Zirconium Alizarin Sulfonate Method, William Lewis Break

Masters Theses

"There has been a need for a rapid and an accurate method for the determination of fluorine in its compounds. Both gravimetric and volumetric methods have been studied, but both methods were time consuming or inaccurate or both. Colorimetric methods had been studied before F. Richter developed his method but none had been reported to be as satisfactory as his method. This method was investigated because it was thought that F. Richter's method would be a satisfactory colorimetric determination for fluorine in its compounds"--Introduction, page 1.

Some Equilibrium Relations In The System Magnesium Oxide-Sulfur Dioxide-Water (Acid Region) At Pressures Below Atmospheric, Donat Bennes Brice Jan 1947

Some Equilibrium Relations In The System Magnesium Oxide-Sulfur Dioxide-Water (Acid Region) At Pressures Below Atmospheric, Donat Bennes Brice

Masters Theses

"This thesis describes the system Magnesium Oxide-Sulfur Dioxide-Water when brought to equilibrium at various pressures of sulfur dioxide plus water vapor, ranging from the vapor pressure of water at the temperature in question to atmospheric pressure. This system is of significance because it is being used more and more in the "Sulfite Process" in the manufacture of wood pulp and is replacing calcium oxide or a mixture of magnesium and calcium. The solution as it comes from the absorption towers is essentially such a system. Numerous investigators have done work on the system sulfur dioxide and water and the work …

Some Preliminary Work On Metaphosphates In Ceramics, John Frederick Burst Jan 1947

Some Preliminary Work On Metaphosphates In Ceramics, John Frederick Burst

Masters Theses

"For a good many years the accepted method of cementing ceramic joints was with a mixture of fire clay grog and a plastic clay binder. This did not prove too satisfactory for several reasons. Usually when enough plastic clay was added to give good workability the vitrification was lowered to such an extent that either excessive shrinkage or excessive bloating occurred, depending upon the extent to which the vitrification point was exceeded...In order to obtain a cement with high strength throughout a long firing range the manufacturers have turned to the addition of various organic binders and inorganic fluxes. Most …

Effect Of Chromium, Molybdenum, Tungsten, And Vanadium Additions On The Physical Properties Of 1.4 Percent Titanium-Copper, Edward Palmer Patterson Jan 1947

Effect Of Chromium, Molybdenum, Tungsten, And Vanadium Additions On The Physical Properties Of 1.4 Percent Titanium-Copper, Edward Palmer Patterson

Masters Theses

"Titanium, an element reported to be ninth most abundant of the elements in the earth's crust, has received very little experimental attention as an alloying element in non-ferrous metallurgy. In copper, titanium produces an age-hardening effect, which makes it of great value to copper manufacturers of fabricated products. Yet, but a handfull of men have investigated the copper-titanium equilibrium diagram, and the titanium rich portion of the diagram still remains a mystery. No work has been done on ternary alloys of copper-titanium to this date, as far as recorded information is concerned, and it is hoped that the present work …

A Study Of Methods For The Removal Of Iron Compounds From Bauxites, Clays And Related Materials, Paul R. Kasten Jan 1947

A Study Of Methods For The Removal Of Iron Compounds From Bauxites, Clays And Related Materials, Paul R. Kasten

Masters Theses

"It was the purpose of this work to investigate the possibilities of developing an extraction process which would remove practically all of the iron from bauxites at an economical cost without extracting much alumina. Such a process may also apply to high iron clays and related materials, and the possibilities of an extraction process for such minerals was included within the scope of the problem"--Introduction, page 2.

The Effects Of Low Concentrations Of Sulphur Dioxide On Oxidized Manganese Ores At Elevated Temperatures, William Henry Magill Jan 1947

The Effects Of Low Concentrations Of Sulphur Dioxide On Oxidized Manganese Ores At Elevated Temperatures, William Henry Magill

Masters Theses

"Although there are large quantities of manganese ore in the United States, most of it is low-grade and cannot be used for the production of ferromanganese. Much government and private research has been done to concentrate the domestic low-grade ores but many problems have been encountered. A large number of treatments have been found necessary for ores from various sections of the country. Low-grade ores have been sulfated with sulfur dioxide in the gaseous state at elevated temperatures and the soluble manganous sulfate extracted with water. This gave a solution of manganous sulfate that may be used for the recovery …

"The purpose of this study is the application of the principles of mining geology to a search for additional ore in one of Missouri's lead mines and to provide in the literature a general analysis of the type of lead deposit found in Southeast Missouri whereby future prospecting and development work on similar deposits may be more efficiently carried on. The study consists of a thorough consideration of the geology and operation of the mine being worked by the Park City Consolidated Mines Company, Missouri Division, at Fredericktown, Madison County, Missouri. The field work was conducted during the months of …

The Use Of Carbides In Refractories, James Adamson Crookston Jan 1947

The Use Of Carbides In Refractories, James Adamson Crookston

Masters Theses

"With the new demands being made on the ceramic industry in mind, it was thought that an investigation of the ceramic possibilities of certain high melting refractory materials might prove of interest and value. The high melting materials are the oxides, carbides, nitrides, borides, and hydrides. Since a great deal of work has been done on the oxides, and relatively little on the others, the oxides were dismissed. Of the other groups, the carbides seemed interesting. Of the carbides, the following materials were chosen for investigation: Boron Carbide (B₄C), Zirconium carbide (ZrC), and Titanium carbide (TiC). These materials were chosen …

Action Of Diatoms On Clay, Joseph Harvey Renfrew Jan 1946

Action Of Diatoms On Clay, Joseph Harvey Renfrew

Masters Theses

"With the recent trend toward the use of higher temperatures and more severe service conditions in the metallurgical and refractories industries there has developed a constantly greater demand for high-alumina clays, that is, clays in which the alumina content is considerably above that of pure kaolinite, Alâ‚‚O₃2SiO₂·Hâ‚‚O. However, the known reserves of good diaspors are so small that ceramic engineers are already turning to basic refractories in order to have sufficient materials for work at high temperatures. Even the slightest reflection on the needs of the refractories industry will show that such substitutions are strictly limited, and possible only where …

Exploration For Barite Deposits In Cole County, Missouri, Arthur William Brune Jan 1946

Exploration For Barite Deposits In Cole County, Missouri, Arthur William Brune

Masters Theses

"Barite is mined in the Southeastern and Central districts of Missouri. The Counties of Franklin, St. Francois, and Washington comprise the Southeastern district, and the counties of Benton, Camden, Cole, Miller, Moniteau, and Morgan comprise the Central district. Although the latter region is the larger of the two, its production of barite is far less than that of the other. The area which is discussed in this report is in the southwestern corner of Cole County. The main points of the problem were: 1. To determine the features, if any, which apparently controlled the localization of the barite deposits in …

The Age Hardening Of Copper-Manganese-Nickel Alloys, William James Barnett Jan 1946

The Age Hardening Of Copper-Manganese-Nickel Alloys, William James Barnett

Masters Theses

"The Bureau of Mines in conjunction with their Electrolytic Manganese Alloys program has developed a series of age hardening copper-manganese-nickel alloys having properties which compare favorably with those of copper-beryllium alloys...An unusual and highly desirable characteristic of these alloys is their insensitiveness to rate of cooling from the solution temperature. Air cooled and water quenched samples will have identical time hardness curves on being aged. Instead of requiring closely controlled conditions characteristic of many age hardening alloys, these alloys cannot be subjected to a thermal mechanical handling which will prevent hardening on their being subsequently heated to the aging temperature. …

Prospecting, Developing, And Mining Bentonite Deposits, John Patrick Rasor Jan 1946

Prospecting, Developing, And Mining Bentonite Deposits, John Patrick Rasor

Masters Theses

"Clay and clay-like minerals are mined in many localities for a large number of uses. Most of these mines are small, seasonal operations. Common practice in these types of pits is to strip and mine clay from shallow overburden depths without the aid of careful prospecting and developing, and with little or no engineering technique. Bentonite deposits which must be continuously mined at tonnages from 5,000 to 7,500 tons per month require that the entire project be carefully planned and engineered so suitable equipment may be obtained and operational cost minimized. This thesis is concerned with the prospecting, developing, and …

Flotation Of The Oxidized Ores Of Zinc, Fred Henry Bunge Jan 1946

Flotation Of The Oxidized Ores Of Zinc, Fred Henry Bunge

Masters Theses

"There is no satisfactory method of concentrating the finely disseminated oxide ores of zinc. Gravity methods of concentrating such ores may be used for coarsely crystalline materials in which the zinc material is free at approximately 10- to 35-mesh or coarser. In addition, gravity methods of concentration do not give a satisfactory separation on those ores in which the gangue mineral is small. As a result there is need for a method of beneficiating various deposits of oxidized zinc ores. The two commercially important oxidized zinc minerals under consideration are smithsonite, the zinc carbonate and hemimorphite, frequently referred to as …

A Study Of Mine Scraper Buckets And Their Efficiency, Austin Bond Clayton Jan 1946

A Study Of Mine Scraper Buckets And Their Efficiency, Austin Bond Clayton

Masters Theses

"The use of power drawn scrapers, often called "slushing", for the moving of ore, stops filling, and waste rock has become standard practice in many mining operations. Several types of scrapers have been developed by practical application or by trial and error methods. However, a direct comparison of these scraper types under identical conditions has not been noted in a review of literature on the subject of mechanical loading. Written inquiries to authorities on scraping practice have brought replies that no previous comparisons of scraper types on a modal scale have been attempted. Therefore, the following thesis problem was set …

Ceramic Properties Of The Clays Of The Polo Gas Field, Clarence Arthur Lambelet Jan 1946

Ceramic Properties Of The Clays Of The Polo Gas Field, Clarence Arthur Lambelet

Masters Theses

"In Western and Northwestern Missouri there exist many natural gas fields of such limited size and of such great dispersion that it is not economical to utilize their products by the construction of pipe lines to consuming centers. Thus a large source of natural wealth is lying idle. This wealth could be utilized, however, if some manufacturing process requiring large amounts of fuel were located in the vicinity...The availability of fuel is the reason for interest in the area, though an investigation should be made to assure the quality and quantity of the fuel in any selected area. the adequacy …

The Mechanical Properties Of Mine Rocks And A Standardized Test Procedure For Their Determination, Walter Edwin Lewis Jan 1946

The Mechanical Properties Of Mine Rocks And A Standardized Test Procedure For Their Determination, Walter Edwin Lewis

Masters Theses

"The problem involves studies of the mechanical properties of rocks and was undertaken in an attempt to determine practical data that will help in estimating the supports required to maintain the roofs of mines during and after mining operations. One of the most important problems in mining today is that of the analysis of the action of mine-rock under stresses. From such an analysis in any given mining venture it should be possible to obtain cheaper methods of mining because the supports necessary to maintain the walls and roof of an excavation may be determined on the basis of how …

An Analysis Of Man Power Efficiency In Drilling Procedures In The Tri-State Mining District, Julian Alban Fuller Jan 1946

An Analysis Of Man Power Efficiency In Drilling Procedures In The Tri-State Mining District, Julian Alban Fuller

Masters Theses

"This thesis embodies the results of an investigation, by the time study method, of certain phases of drilling procedures recently brought into practice in the Tri-State mining district. The field work was accomplished during the months of July, and August 1945; the data obtained therefrom and the analysis presented in this dissertation apply to the practice in effect at that time"--Preface, page ii.

A Study Of The Separation Of Feldspar From Missouri Granite, Vernon Louis Kasten Jan 1945

A Study Of The Separation Of Feldspar From Missouri Granite, Vernon Louis Kasten

Masters Theses

"The greatest use of feldspar is as a flux in the Ceramic Industry where it is used in the manufacture of abrasives, floor tile, terra cotta, china, and earthenware of all types. It is also used in the manufacture of glass and enamels, and much is used as grinding medium in powdered form because it is softer than the common abrasive, quartz...Missouri Granites are composed of feldspar, quartz, mica, and other materials, which may or may not occur in all the samples. It is the purpose of this investigation to attempt a separation of the feldspar from these other components …

A Comparative Analysis Of Some Recent Mining Practices In The Tri- State Mining District, James Francis Alexander Taylor Jan 1945

A Comparative Analysis Of Some Recent Mining Practices In The Tri- State Mining District, James Francis Alexander Taylor

Masters Theses

"The Tri-State District, encompassing contiguous corner portions of Southwest Missouri, Southeast Kansas, and Northeast Oklahoma, has been, for many years, the leading zinc producer of the United States. However, rising labor costs and decreasing grade of ore reserves have meant that many of the mines gradually have become marginal in the economic character of their operations. In an attempt to counteract these adverse effects, steps were taken to attain lower cost mining methods, and mechanization has been introduced over a period of years. Further, the research program of the Eagle-Picher Company, the leading producer of the district, has been accelerated …

A Study Of Methods For The Purification And The Removal Of Color From Trinitrotoluene Wash Waters, William Wilson Jan 1943

A Study Of Methods For The Purification And The Removal Of Color From Trinitrotoluene Wash Waters, William Wilson

Masters Theses

"Symmetrical Trinitrotoluene is stable in the presence of moisture, but the nonsymmetrical trinitrotoluenes permit replacement of a nitro group with the formation of a nitrated cresol and nitrous acid. Nitrated cresols form salts similar to the picrates. To avoid these nonsymmetrical trinitrotoluenes the Ordinance Department, U. S. A., requires that Grade I trinitrotoluene have a solidification point of at least 80.2⁰C.². Numerous methods for purifying the crude trinitrotoluene and others for separating the nitrotoluenes have been suggested"--Introduction, page 1.

A Study Of The Electrolytic Reduction Of Pyrrole, Don Richard Strehlau Jan 1942

A Study Of The Electrolytic Reduction Of Pyrrole, Don Richard Strehlau

Masters Theses

"A review of the chemical literature has shown that electro-organic methods compare favorably with purely chemical methods for certain syntheses belonging to the following general classes of reactions: coupling, oxidation, reactions with halogens, and reductions. Electro-organic methods have been used most successfully in synthesis by reduction. The chief advantage is using electrolytic reduction in preference to a chemical one is that it offers a more exact control of conditions, and consequently should give a higher yield and a purer product. The advantages of the means of reduction suggested an investigation of its use in the synthesis of hydrogenated products of …

A High Alumina Concentrate From Low-Grade Burley Clay, Leonard Stearns Jan 1942

A High Alumina Concentrate From Low-Grade Burley Clay, Leonard Stearns

Masters Theses

"The principal source of raw material for the production of high-alumina refractories are the diaspore clays of Missouri. These highly refractory clays contain a large percentage of the mineral, diaspore, a monohydrate of alumina whose theoretical chemical formula is Al₂O₃ʺH₂O. The clays as mined contain from 85 to 65 per cent alumina...Diaspore clays as now found fill sandstone-lined "sink holes" or depressions in the parts of the district underlain by rocks of the Pennsylvanian Age. They are rough open-textured clays, grey or buff in color usually, containing the mineral diaspore in the form of shot-like particles or "oolites." There are …

Recovery Of Manganese From Oxidized Ores As Iron-And Phosphorus-Free Soluble Salts, Emil Pietz Jan 1942

Recovery Of Manganese From Oxidized Ores As Iron-And Phosphorus-Free Soluble Salts, Emil Pietz

Masters Theses

"There is a great demand at present for this country to develop its manganese resources. The hazards encountered because of the present international crisis make it almost impossible to import high-grade ores. Manganese is one of the most important strategic metals because it is vital to the production of steel. After the stock piles are depleted and the imports decreased, the deficit must be supplied by the domestic deposits. A great deal of research has been done to concentrate the domestic low-grade ores but new problems have always been encountered. The differences in the properties of the low-grade ores from …

Determination Of Alkalies In Portland Cement By The Dropping Mercury Electrode Method, William Joseph Smothers Jan 1942

Determination Of Alkalies In Portland Cement By The Dropping Mercury Electrode Method, William Joseph Smothers

Masters Theses

"In many industries whose product or products contain alkalies, the determination of the amount present is very essential from a control standpoint. This present investigation is concerned with a method for quantitative determination of sodium and potassium as accurately as by customary chemical methods and which will require less time in its operation. Portland cement is a product in which the amount of sodium and potassium present is of prime importance. This importance of the alkalies upon the behavior of concrete was first noticed in California where, after numerous tests, it was definitely shown that with certain aggregates there was …
